Today we're broadcasting from the North Kent Golf Course in Rockford as the Grand Rapids Gold had their Charity fundraiser today. They managed to raise over $35,000 to help get kids basketballs, improve facilities, and so much more. Throughout the show we were joined by some of the great people attached to that event, and we were joined by some of our insiders to talk about the Lions, MSU, and more. We kicked off the show with Jeff Risdon from Lionswire to get his thoughts on the Lions loss to the Seahawks yesterday. He and Huge talked about what they liked and disliked, discussed how horrible the coaching was, and much more. We kicked off the second hour talking a little about the Michigan win over Bowling Green as Chris Balas from theWolverine.com joined us. News then broke that MSU "intends" to fire Mel Tucker, so we got Chris's thoughts on that as well. We were then joined by Tim Staudt from Staudt on Sports in Lansing to get his thoughts on this. He and Huge talked about where this team goes from here, and more. We wrapped up the hour with Mike Penberthy, who is a shooting Coach for the Denver Nuggets. He talked about his connection to the NBA and the Nuggets, and much more. We talked more about the Lions game from yesterday as Jeremy Reisman from Pride of Detroit joined us. He gave his thoughts on how the team played, how the coaching was, what the Lions could've done differently, and more. We were then joined by Steve Jbarra who is the owner of the Grand Rapids Gold. He and Huge talked about the Gold Charity Fundraiser and the meaning behind it, talked about the Gold and the Denver Nuggets, and more. We were then joined by Nic Lapienski who is the owner of the North Kent Golf Course. He talked about is connection with Steve Jbarra and the GR Gold, talked about the Golf Course and his connection to community, and more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Monday, Darvin Ham was introduced to the LA media as head coach. On Tuesday, he began shaping his staff. Most notable were the names of the guys from last year's staff he let go - David Fizdale, Mike Penberthy, John Lucas III - and one of the two guys he kept. Phil Handy is widely considered among the best assistant coaching in the NBA, a guy many believe should be getting more shine for head jobs. Handy, who worked with Ham on Mike Brown's Lakers staff a decade ago and has a deep relationship with LeBron James, isn't going anywhere. He, along with Quinton Crawford, will be part of next year's group as well. It's another piece of good news, and an indication that Ham will be able to make a strong pitch to those coaches he wants to see join his staff, including some who might be under contract in other cities. How much does it matter that he find a guy with head coaching experience? What about the other things Ham emphasized? Like defense? Accountability? Sacrifice? Particularly on the defensive side of things, is he capable of delivering if Rob Pelinka doesn't deliver a better roster? Finally, Pelinka says the Lakers lacked toughness last year, and it's hard to argue. But why? How much of that was on Vogel, and how much can be addressed by changing coaches? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Darvin Ham is making moves, letting three members of last year's staff go... but keeping Phil Handy. SEGMENT 2: What kind of staff is Ham going to assemble? Does he need a guy with head coaching experience? What about specialists? SEGMENT 3: The Lakers weren't tough last year. Why? Another day, another trade rumor involving the Lakers and Kyle Kuzma. This time, he was reportedly offered, along with the 22nd pick, to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for T.J. Warren and the 13th pick. If that sounds lopsided in favor of the Lakers, that's only because it is. Like, a lot. But what's even more curious is the Lakers' reported attempt to move up in a draft. Could the Lakers have a specific player in mind (Chris Duarte?), or another plan altogether? In the meantime, there's change a-foot among the coaching staff. The venerable Lionel Hollins and the Lakers have parted ways after an impasse during contract negotiations. Reportedly, Hollins will be replaced internally by a promoted Mike Penberthy, heretofore largely known for his work as a shooting coach with the Lakers. (Take that info as you will.) If nobody else is brought on from the outside, should eyebrows be raised. Plus, the Kamenetzkys reminisce about their days as published authors. Have you picked up a copy of "Fishing on the Edge?" It apparently still sells copies. Seriously. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Pacers reportedly (and reasonably) turned down a trade offer involving Kuzma and the 22nd pick. What can be read into this attempt by Rob Pelinka? SEGMENT 2: More on what the Lakers could be up to in the draft, where it's been suggested they're trying to do everything from move higher in the first, or out of it entirely. SEGMENT 3: Hollins out. Penberthy promoted. Significant development? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The NBA has its first COVID-19 interruption of the 2020-21 season, and it's not James Harden's fault! Well, it's sort of his fault, but not for the reasons some might think. On a night where the Rockets/Thunder game was postponed, we welcome Rohan Nadkarni, NBA writer at Sports Illustrated, to the show. We start on Harden's mess, the Rockets' mess, and what might soon spill into the NBA's mess if players across the league don't stay vigilant about protecting themselves. Meanwhile, how is Harden's violation of league protocols and general thumbing of his nose at Houston's management is making it harder for him to actually get what he wants? Then, it's on to the Opening Night Battle of LA... won by the Clippers. It's the first game, but what might have been instructive, insofar as matchups later in the season are concerned? Were there any clues on how a playoff series between these teams could go? From there, it's on to Rohan's outstanding feature story on Davis. How did Kobe play a role in his development? What about Lakers assistant coach Mike Penberthy? We talk Jimmy Butler (based on another excellent story from Rohan) and why so many people missed the mark with him. Finally, a game of Rob Pelinka Trivia, in honor of Rob Pelinka's birthday.
