NBA free agency kicked off Thursday afternoon, and the Lakers didn't let limited resources keep them on the sidelines. They signed a center (Damian Jones) and two forwards (Juan Toscano-Anderson and Troy Brown Jr.) to veteran's minimum contracts, and used their taxpayer midlevel exception, worth about $6.5 million, on former Spurs guard Lonnie Walker IV. On the one hand, the Lakers broke from last year's free agent trends in significant ways. First, they went much, much younger. The oldest of the quartet is Toscano-Anderson, at 29. On the other, the Lakers didn't pick up any of the shooting they banked last season. Or at least they thought they banked, in hindsight. All told, it reminds Lakers fans of the bind the team is in, trying to make impactful improvements to the roster. (It also reminds Lakers fans of who put the Lakers in this box to begin with... namely, the Lakers.) So what signings were the best? Which were the most questionable? Where do they go from here? Can the Lakers make any trades to fill in some of the gaps? And speaking of trades, Kevin Durant has demanded one out of Brooklyn, contacting owner Joe Tsai himself. And while he's highly unlikely to land in Los Angeles, it does put Kyrie Irving back into play. In fact, some reports suggest Irving might try to force his way to Los Angeles. It's reasonable to ask if this becomes the Thanos of NBA trades -- simply inevitable. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Free agency, Day 1: The Lakers make four moves. What were they trying to accomplish? SEGMENT 2: Breaking down the names. Who do you like, who don't you like? How much better are the Lakers now? SEGMENT 3: The rumors that won't die -- Kyrie Irving is once again being linked to the Lakers, and it seems like it might happen, maybe later, maybe sooner, but at some point. Mo Bamba, Otto Porter Jr., Caleb Martin, Malik Monk? Who Should the Lakers Target in Free Agency?

For the Lakers, the start of Thursday's free agency period in the NBA is an opportunity to improve, and a reminder of how constrained they are in the effort. There are some intriguing names out there, many of whom could help a team with precious little depth... but the Lakers enter the fray with only one big chunk of change at their disposal - the taxpayer midlevel exception worth just over six million - and in the grand scheme of things, even that one isn't so big. So what should they prioritize? Is it Orlando center Mo Bamba? Golden State wing Otto Porter Jr.? What about a sleeper candidate like Miami's Caleb Martin or Isaiah Hartenstein from the Clippers? They only get one crack at it, and how they spend this money will have a major impact on the way the Lakers then fill other holes. And what about the older vets? Someone like Blake Griffin will inevitably be attached to the Lakers via the rumor mill. Given the experience of last season, how many of those guys can/should they get away with signing? Is there any space for the cagey, low minutes vet on this squad? Finally, the Buddy Hield rumor mill will never fully die. But whether for Hield or anyone else, do the Lakers have the flexibility to pull off a trade of significance? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Who will be the 6:01 ET phone call as free agency opens? Who should get LA's attention (and the biggest chuck of its money)? SEGMENT 2: Bamba or Porter or Hartenstein or Martin or ??? Who are the best free agent targets for L.A.? SEGMENT 3: A brilliant tweet about Russell Westbrook. Russell Westbrook Picks up $47 Million Option with the Lakers. What now? Plus, Malik Monk Staying?

Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

There were no credible scenarios in which Lakers guard Russell Westbrook decided to decline his $47.1 million player option for next season. Not in a world where maybe - maybe - he'd be in line to get someone's midlevel exception for about $10 mil. And that's a best-case scenario. So while Tuesday's news that Westbrook has exercised the option and is, save a trade, set to return isn't surprising, it's one more step towards actually taking the floor for L.A. this year. That's something few thought would happen at the end of last season. So how is the relationship with Westbrook? Has the team been bluffing with all the nice stuff they've said about him this offseason? Is there a chance everyone can reset the relationship and get him to play ball with a new outlook and new role? Would Russ accept it? Would it really make a difference if he did? (How many guys change their games to start doing the little things in their 15th year?) And how was the relationship impacted by the whole Kyrie Irving saga, which linked Brooklyn's guard to the Lakers? To discuss all of this, along with Malik Monk's potential future with the Lakers and a preview of what the team might do in free agency when it kicks off this week, Jovan Buha of The Athletic joins the show. He brings all his insight about the state of Westbrook and the Lakers, his understanding of Monk's priorities (based on a great new feature on the guy) and more. LISTEN UP! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky with guest, Jovan Buha SEGMENT 1: Russ is back. Back again. Russ is back, Russ is back, Russ is back, Russ is back, Russ is back... SEGMENT 2: How close were the Lakers to getting Kyrie Irving? Was there fire to go with the smoke? SEGMENT 3: Would Monk stay with the Lakers for less than he'd get on the open market? Would the Lakers try hard to keep him, over other options? How will they approach free agency when it kicks off Thursday afternoon? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Kyrie Irving opts in with Nets. What Next For the Lakers? Plus, Would Malik Monk Take Less to Stay?

The world woke up Monday to news that the relationship between Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets continued to deteriorate, and the star guard had permission to look for a sign and trade deal that would end his stay with the Nets. The Lakers, it was said, were the only team that showed interest. But Brooklyn, it was said, didn't want Russell Westbrook. So would it be a three-team deal? Four? How far would the Lakers go to simultaneously add the dynamic (if problematic) scorer and rid themselves of the Westbrook problem? Well, by 4 pm local time, it was a moot point. Kyrie announced, in the most pretentious way possible, he'll be staying with the Nets. Irving opts into the final year of his contract, and while that doesn't mean he can't be traded, it does mean he can't be part of a sign-and-trade that would bring him the contract Brooklyn seems unwilling to provide. So what does this situation say about Kyrie? The league's shifting approach to stars? The Lakers? And L.A.'s relationship to Westbrook? All of it is relevant and discussed herein. From there, it's a look at NBA free agency, which kicks off on Thursday. Specifically, The Athletic's Jovan Buha reports that Malik Monk, one of the team's few bright spots from last season, would be willing to take a little less to stay with the Lakers. Which would probably be required, were the Lakers to retain him. LA simply can't compete with what other teams can offer Monk, should they be so inclined. But even if the Lakers can give Monk their biggest available exception (a little over six million dollars) should they? Does Monk fill the greatest need in a summer where the Lakers have very few assets on hand? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Kyrie-to-LA heats up... then ends just as fast. SEGMENT 2: Why the Lakers handled this news cycle the right way, vis-a-vis Westbrook. SEGMENT 3: Should the Lakers use their taxpayer midlevel exception on Malik Monk, if that would keep him here? The Kyrie Irving Rumors Gain Some Steam, While the Lakers Prepare for Free Agency

Free agency begins this week in the NBA, and the Lakers have a tremendous amount of work in front of them. But as the curtain rises on rebuilding yet another brand new Lakers roster, there's more smoke billowing around the Kyrie Irving-to-LA conversation. Not any fire, yet, it would appear, but with careful NBA reporters saying that LeBron James and Kyrie are communicating and that there's some substance to the interest, it's not nothing, either. And with James Harden reportedly set to take a less-than-max-length extension with Philadelphia, does that change the arithmetic around Kyrie's leverage, whether in Brooklyn or L.A.? What about LeBron's leadership? In an interview with Bloomberg, Golden State's Draymond Green noted that LeBron's presence would help mitigate Kyrie's relative lack of leadership skills. Certainly not a guy you'd want as a frontman, for sure... which means LeBron has to be here as long as Irving would be. Is James committed to Los Angeles in that way? Finally, as free agency starts, we open up the mailbag to look at some of the team needs, and whether or not the team will recalibrate its strategy around signing free agents. Should they bring back anyone? Dwight Howard? Carmelo Anthony? Should they guarantee spots for Stanley Johnson or Wenyen Gabriel? It's gonna be real tough to pull together a coherent roster on minimum deals and one taxpayer exception, that's for sure. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Kyrie rumors are percolating. Credible sources say there's something to it. SEGMENT 2: Draymond Green weighs in on how LeBron's influence could help it work, should Kyrie land in Los Angeles. The Lakers had indicated they'd try to find a way into Thursday's NBA Draft, and that's exactly what they did, executing a trade with Orlando to acquire the 35th pick. They spent it on 19-year old Michigan State wing Max Christie, who had a somewhat disappointing freshman season in East Lansing, but has a lot of appealing skills and plenty of runway to develop them, given his age. What should fans expect from him? The Lakers also moved quickly to fill their two-way slots, adding Vanderbilt guard Scotty Pippen Jr. and Syracuse forward Cole Swider. Given the team's track record finding good players on the fringes, it's reasonable for fans to be optimistic some of these guys could make it in the league. Perhaps the most interesting thing to come out of New York on Thursday night for the Lakers? GM Rob Pelinka told the assembled media that Ham has had lengthy conversations with Russell Westbrook about his role, and that Russ is ready to accept a defensive-first mindset. Will it translate to the court? Who knows? But there's a better chance Russ reforms his game in important ways this year than last, at the least. Finally, it's time to open up the mailbag! What kind of free agents might the team attract as the market opens next week? And would you rather have intense star power with three guys and zero depth, or lesser stars and a more complete roster? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Welcome, new Lakers! SEGMENT 2: Russ says he's ready to commit to defense. Or Rob Pelinka says he says that. Do you buy it? SEGMENT 3: Mailbag! Wednesday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski laid out more reporting around Kyrie Irving and his standoff with the Brooklyn Nets. Irving's only realistic path (at least currently) to the Lakers is one that requires him to opt out of his contract, leave over $36 million on the table, and instead sign with the Lakers for just over $6 million. No player has ever left that much money unclaimed. it's worth noting that Irving lost out on $17 million or so last season by not getting vaccinated and missing games, and also tens of millions via a lost sponsorship with Nike. So does that mean he's an unpredictable loose cannon who would do even the most unusual, unprecedented things around his finances? Or does it mean he's more incentivized to gets some of that cash back? Meanwhile, Kendrick Nunn picked up his $5.2 million option this week, no surprise since it's exactly what he said he'd do during his exit interview. For a team as strapped as the Lakers, adding Nunn back into the mix is the equivalent to getting an extra free agent signing. The guy didn't play a second last year. His presence is 100% new. So how important a role will he play? Jordan Ott has joined the Lakers coaching staff. It means Darvin Ham has added another coach with whom he's worked (Ham and Ott were in the org at the same time a few years ago in Atlanta), and who doesn't have head coaching experience. Is that a big deal? Finally, it's Draft night? What will the Lakers do? Can they buy a pick or two in the second round? How much movement should we expect from them, and other teams around the league? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: More Kyrie rumors. Would he leave tens of millions on the table? SEGMENT 2: Darvin Ham adds another name to his coaching staff. And again, it looks like the front office is giving him what he wants. SEGMENT 3: Previewing Draft night. NBA Rumors: The Lakers are Reportedly Interested in Brooklyn's Kyrie Irving

Monday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the Brooklyn Nets and mercurial guard Kyrie Irving have reached an impasse in contract negotiations, making it more likely the Nets star decides to become a free agent. And if that happens, Charania says the Lakers, of course, would be among the interested parties. So much to unpack. On Monday's show the idea of Bradley Beal, another potential target for the Lakers should things go wrong with Beal and the Washington Wizards, was tossed around. Players like Beal come with significant injury risk, and would cost a lot of money. But Beal is a rock solid locker room presence. Kyrie? He's like dropping a load of incredibly self-important dynamite into the building. You're just begging for an explosion. On the other hand, Irving is a transcendent offensive talent. That much is undeniable. So under what terms should the Lakers swing a deal (which would, definitionally, rid themselves of the Russell Westbrook contract), if it becomes an option? Would/should they give him a max contract, and hope for the best? Draw the line playing out next season and crossing the next bridge when they get there? Is a one year extension an option? And oh, does anyone know yet if LeBron James, with whom Irving won a chip back in Cleveland, would think another go round is a good idea? Especially after the disastrous Season Of Westbrook? One thing is clear: If the Lakers are going to make a commitment to Irving, they need to secure a commitment from James. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Kyrie Irving may become available, and if he does, the Lakers are reportedly interested. It was a busy weekend for Darvin Ham as he fills out his coaching staff. Multiple reports say the Lakers will hire Chris Jent, a longtime assistant who has worked both with Ham in Atlanta and LeBron James in Cleveland, for a lead assistant position. What does he bring? Meanwhile Quinton Crawford, a very well regarded young coach who Ham had hoped to keep from Frank Vogel's staff, will be joining Jason Kidd in Dallas. As for more names... how about Rasheed Wallace? When asked about 'Sheed, long rumored to be coming to LA, Ham told Rich Eisen he could "neither confirm nor deny" that was a thing, but said it with a laugh and noted he's a candidate for sure. What would adding Wallace mean for Anthony Davis? Finally, on a recent podcast the great Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer noted that the Lakers have some interest in Washington star Bradley Beal, who has said he has made a decision about his future... but isn't quite ready to share? Would that decision be "go to LA?" Probably not, but even the hypothetical trade - Russell Westbrook, two first round picks and basically anything else the Wizards demanded the Lakers throw in - is fascinating given the context of the Lakers roster, their other available assets, and everything they've been through over the last couple of years. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers will hire Chris Jent to be Darvin Ham's lead assistant. Earlier this week, the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder made a trade that, frankly, impacted the Lakers more than it will either of those teams. Why? Because the transaction basically made it much harder for the Thunder to acquire Russell Westbrook from the Lakers. Were they going to? Probably not, but given how thin the interest in Westbrook is likely to be, any shrinkage in available options is a thing. So Wednesday's trade sending Christian Wood from Houston to Dallas makes a difference to the Lakers, too, because Wood is one of those guys rumored to have been a possibility to move in a trade for Westbrook. Probably not as likely and therefore not as landscape altering, but another potential option chipped away. It reflects just how tricky this is going to be, and why more and more experts are catching up to the hosts of this show, and expecting Westbrook to open the season with the Lakers. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves was featured in a great article by Dan Woike of the LA Times. He was one of the few feel good stories of this season, and this feature won't exactly make you feel worse. So what can he become in the NBA? And how likely is it the Lakers can find a couple more "Austin Reaves" surprises in this season's free agent/draft market? And about that market... you want the good news or the bad news when it comes to available small forwards? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Westbrook market just keeps shrinking. LeBron James Hasn't Signaled About a Contract Extension, and Anthony Davis is Shooting Again!

Anthony Davis was back at the facility Tuesday, working with the famous/infamous "Lethal Shooter," a somewhat controversial shooting coach who has worked with a bunch of NBA players, including some current Lakers. So you now have a fairly comical situation where fans were upset that he hadn't been shooting, and now are upset at who he's shooting with. And meanwhile, LeBron James, famous for subtweeting teammates on a variety of issues, has spent the week posting to social media all kinds of excited motivational messages about next season, including workout videos. So is A.D.'s public return to the gym a response to LeBron's social posts? Probably not! But that folks are asking the question reflects the levels of angst people feel about the team and Davis in particular after a first round playoff exit was followed by the tire fire of the 2021-22 season. More potential angst comes from James and his extension. Is he going to sign it? Might he tip his hand in a way that would be useful to the Lakers as they get into the Draft and free agency? As they consider trades? Because there's a big difference in how you act as a franchise if you know he's around vs. if you're just not quite sure. Finally, many are asking whether Darvin Ham is the right guy to get the most out of Russell Westbrook. Certainly he has qualities of leadership, respect and communication that give him as good a shot as anyone, and simply not being Frank Vogel will make a difference... but ultimately is this a question that's less about Ham and more about Westbrook? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis is back in the gym... and the controversy doesn't quite end. SEGMENT 2: Is LeBron subtweeting Davis? And what happens if the Lakers don't really know if he's going to sign that extension this summer? What impact does it have on the team's strategy? What the NBA Finals and Steph Curry Says About Anthony Davis and the Lakers

Game 5 was a clunker for Steph Curry, but nonetheless you can make a very solid argument that Steph has been the difference between the Warriors and a Boston team that has frequently looked deeper and better overall. But Curry's play compared with a much more inconsistent Jayson Tatum for the Celtics is a big reason Golden State has a 3-2 lead. So what does that have to do with the Lakers? Well, they're built on a premise that Davis is in that tiny sliver of players who in the ultra elite, and will consistently outperform that still-excellent class of nomal elite players in the biggest games on the biggest stages. If Davis is more Tatum than Curry, so to speak, that has a massive impact on L.A.'s upside. So that's one big reason Lakers fans are showing some real angst around Davis, which was seen in the comments section of the Locked On Lakers YouTube page following Monday's show. If he's not "that guy," the Lakers don't have many options going forward to find someone who is (because there are still very, very few players out there better than him), or fill out the roster in a way that helps make up the difference. Meanwhile, the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder agreed to a seemingly minor trade that will have OKC absorb JaMychal Green into their available cap space. Maybe minor for them, but not for the Lakers who had at least penciled in the Thunder as a potential trade partner, capable of absorbing into cap space. That gets harder, now. And it's a reminder that moving Westbrook is no easy feat, unless you want to overpay in big ways to do it. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What watching Steph Curry in the NBA Finals reveals about Anthony Davis and the Lakers. SEGMENT 2: What does it mean for the Lakers if A.D. isn't quite "that guy?" SEGMENT 3: Trading Russell Westbrook just got a little harder. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Why an Eight Second Video of Anthony Davis Has Lakers Fans Upset

The Lakers had a terrible 2021-22 season, in part because Anthony Davis was not the dominant force he needed to be (even setting aside all the time missed with injury). Over the weekend, a video surfaced, clipped (of course!) from a larger video in which Anthony Davis notes he hasn't shot a basketball since April. Not sure when it was shot, and honestly it doesn't matter. Davis, like many players, takes the first weeks of the offseason to heal, then trains without a basketball for a while before returning to the court. Training camp doesn't happen until October. It's a nothingburger, basketball wise. Optics wise? Davis is coming off a horrible season shooting the rock, and has generally not fared that well with the jumper - Bubble aside - since arriving in Los Angeles. So for fans to hear that he hasn't been burying himself in the gym with a maniacal focus on destroying the NBA next season has many of them up in arms. It's not fair, but fairness and optics are often unrelated. What does it say about what Lakers Nation feels about Davis that this super innocuous clip has made so many people mad? And do we need to re-think the concept of "Bubble Davis," anyway? What do the shooting trends reveal for Davis? Plus... revisiting Friday's hypothetical Russell Westbrook-for-Rudy Gobert trade, and the split-down-the-middle poll results when we asked fans what they thought about it. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Why are fans so split on Westbrook-for-Gobert? SEGMENT 2: Anthony Davis apparently hasn't been shooting and working out on the floor. Why Lakers fans are upset. SEGMENT 3: Do we need to re-think what a dominant Davis look like, exactly? Was "Bubble Davis" misleading? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On Thursday's show, it was time to review some of the street free agents the Lakers have brought into the building to get a look, and see if they'd be a fit somewhere on the roster for next season. Friday, it's a deeper look into the challenge of improving the team via free agency. Jovan Buha at The Athletic has a list of potential free agents, along with needs. But how many of the players who could make an impact would actually be available? Is it more important to find a player at a different position, or retain Malik Monk? And how about this for a hypothetical: Russell Westbrook (and likely some stuff) for Utah's Rudy Gobert, who has been the subject of trade rumors this week. Likely Utah feels they could do better (can't blame them) but are there any reasons the Lakers, or Lakers fans, would hesitate to add The Stifle Tower, who has DPOY potential on a yearly basis, but also has run into serious issues in the postseason and is owed eleventybillion dollars over the next few years? Finally, LeBron wants to own an NBA team, and he wants it to be in Vegas. That feels... like a very strong proposal. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Looking at potential free agents, and the challenge ahead for the Lakers. SEGMENT 2: Westbrook for Gobert? Who says no? Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has made no secret throughout his career of his admiration, even idolization, of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. It's a topic that has come up a lot during the playoffs, and Boston's run to the Finals, given gestures like Tatum wearing a "24" wristband in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. It's put some Lakers fans in a weird position, one where they're actually pulling for a Celtic, and even the Celtics, in the Finals against Golden State. Is that against the rules? What are the rules, anyway? The Lakers are already on to the business of building out next season's roster. It's a given they'll have a lot of slots to fill via free agency, and not a lot money to do it. So journeymen like Langston Galloway, Kyle Guy, Alize Johnson, and D.J. Wilson —all of whom were in El Segundo this week—represent the kind of player to which the Lakers will have access. Finding the right combination of limited players that can be put in the best position to succeed while also fitting in with the team's stars (if necessary) won't be easy. But that's the challenge. How likely is it Rob Pelinka and crew will find the right mix? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are auditioning free agents. What it means, in the micro and the macro. On Monday, Darvin Ham was introduced to the LA media as head coach. On Tuesday, he began shaping his staff. Most notable were the names of the guys from last year's staff he let go - David Fizdale, Mike Penberthy, John Lucas III - and one of the two guys he kept. Phil Handy is widely considered among the best assistant coaching in the NBA, a guy many believe should be getting more shine for head jobs. Handy, who worked with Ham on Mike Brown's Lakers staff a decade ago and has a deep relationship with LeBron James, isn't going anywhere. He, along with Quinton Crawford, will be part of next year's group as well. It's another piece of good news, and an indication that Ham will be able to make a strong pitch to those coaches he wants to see join his staff, including some who might be under contract in other cities. How much does it matter that he find a guy with head coaching experience? What about the other things Ham emphasized? Like defense? Accountability? Sacrifice? Particularly on the defensive side of things, is he capable of delivering if Rob Pelinka doesn't deliver a better roster? Finally, Pelinka says the Lakers lacked toughness last year, and it's hard to argue. But why? How much of that was on Vogel, and how much can be addressed by changing coaches? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Darvin Ham is making moves, letting three members of last year's staff go... but keeping Phil Handy. The Lakers officially introduced Darvin Ham as the new head coach, and the press conference, which was by all accounts a rousing success, featured thoughts from the new guy about topics ranging from Russell Westbrook (in attendance), Anthony Davis, LeBron James, and much more. To begin, what qualified him for the job. As Rob Pelinka noted, this is a man who's paid his dues beginning in the G-League as both a coach and General Manager, but as Ham noted in glowing detail, his time on Mike Budenholzer's staffs in Atlanta and Milwaukee (where he was part of the 2021 championship) made lasting impressions on him. (As did his first NBA coaching job with the Lakers on Mike Brown's staff.) Ham also talked a lot about the role of Russell Westbrook, who for the time being is expected to be a part of the team next season. Ham expects the point guard to make sacrifices, just like everyone else. But he also reiterated his belief in a former MVP he thinks has been way too prematurely written off. For that matter, he also has big hopes for Anthony Davis, who he described as "the key" to the Lakers reaching their best form. As for LeBron James, Ham wants to manage his minutes as much as possible, but remains in awe of what the almost-38 year-old can do at this stage of his career. And finally, Ham's confidence and authority while selling himself as a first-year head coach was unmistakable, and absolutely convincing. He didn't seem even slightly intimidated by this prospect. But as Ham noted, once you've been accidentally shot in the face, as was the case for him in 1988, most situations lose their ability to create pressure. Basketball is just a challenge. Three-plus years ago, the Lakers introduced Frank Vogel as head coach in a press conference where he was an afterthought, thanks to a missed postseason, Magic Johnson's abrupt departure, Luke Walton's firing, coaching search shenanigans, and more. Later today (Monday), Darvin Ham will be introduced to replace Vogel, and while the team is hardly in a perfect place, there should be at least less overall angst. That should help make the day one of greater optimism, where Ham will have the opportunity to really make an impression on the city and his future players. What should Lakers fans want to hear from Ham? What are the most interesting questions that could be asked in order to get a feel for who he might become as head coach. And once everyone is done with Darvin, what questions are there for Rob Pelinka, who still hasn't spent a ton of time addressing Lakers media (and by extension, Lakers fans)? Of course, Ham's success will depend a lot on the roster he's given. There is still a ton of mystery in that regard, given how many holes the team has to fill. One player (presumably) returning next season is Austin Reaves. He was a great surprise this year, but was also the beneficiary of low expectations and being a bright spot amidst a raging tire fire surrounding him. What can the Lakers expect from Reaves? Is he a starter? A high class reserve? Someone who, on a more successful team, might not be worthy of as much playing time? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Monday's press conference introducing Darvin Ham will look a lot different than the one introducing Frank Vogel, and that's a very good thing for the Lakers. LeBron James became a billionaire this week, fueled in part by his work in Hollywood as a producer and actor. So what awaits him going forward in the world of entertainment? Can he carve out a niche as an actor? Is his future really as a dealmaker, working behind the scenes as a producer. His newest venture, Hustle, starring Adam Sandler, debuts next week on Netflix and is getting quality early buzz. So what kind of Hollywood star is James? Amy Nicholson, host of the Unspooled podcast and NY Times film critic, who just happens to be a massive Lakers fan, joins the show to talk about James, the Lakers, Tom Cruise and the nature of stardom. Is the nature of the superstar, in entertainment and sports alike, shifting for good? But first, we lament the departure of Alex Caruso to Chicago -- Amy has multiple t-shirts celebrating Caruso and other Lakers players who all tend to get traded once she makes the investment -- and the team's broad unwillingness to grow their own rosters. It's been a tough year for Lakers fans, no question, and for many seeing the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals only makes things worse. For many, the LeBron James/Anthony Davis Era was supposed to be the thing that helped the Lakers equal, or even pass, the C's in race for most titles in league history. Instead, this year Boston can widen the lead, again. Moreover, they have an easier path to success going forward. On a brighter note, the return of Boston to the Finals brings back memories of the last two Lakers/Celtics Finals series. The crushing defeat in 2008, and the incredible redemption of 2010, and a Game 7 that was monumentally impactful for the legacy of Kobe Bryant. It's hard to imagine a more significant pivot point, which is why that series broadly and that game specifically remain so compelling. First, though, the Lakers released their preseason schedule. Normally not a big event, but it's a reminder that this year's problems began with a preseason that nobody, save perhaps Anthony Davis, took seriously enough. It set the wrong tone, and it was a mistake the Lakers are unlikely to make again this year. Finally, the roster construction of the Celtics and Warriors drive home the challenge the Lakers are facing, not just to get back to an elite level next season, but to maintain it going forward. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Why the Lakers will need to take the preseason more seriously this season. SEGMENT 2: Remembering Kobe vs. the Celtics. SEGMENT 3: Former Laker Robert Horry explains on Locked On Sports Today why the C's are built for the long haul, if they're willing to make some compromises. How Hard Will It Be for the Lakers to Trade Russell Westbrook?

Now that Darvin Ham is in the fold, attention returns to Russell Westbrook, and the efforts the Lakers will surely make to try and trade him this offseason. It's what he wants, it's what the Lakers want. But that doesn't mean it'll happen. Many fans, however, have become fully invested emotionally at the idea of trading him at any costs, or at the least, cutting him before training camp begins if that's not an option. But just how realistic is it? Will the Lakers be able to find a trade that isn't cost prohibitive? Just how big will the market be for Westbrook? On the one hand, it's a $47 million expiring contract. On the other, it's easy to wonder how many teams would want him, for all the same reasons Lakers fans want him gone. Where, exactly, would he fit? So matching the goal (no more Russ) with the difficult balancing act the Lakers have to manage this offseason (trying to get better with VERY few options at their disposal) will be a tricky one. What about rumored deals with New York, Charlotte, Houston or Indiana, most of them for real, if flawed, rotation players? Do they make sense? Would they be good deals for the Lakers, even if they cost additional picks? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Setting the stage. Ham is in, and now attention turns back to Westbrook, and managing expectations. SEGMENT 2: What are the challenges inherent in trading Russ? How robust will the market actually be? The Lakers made big news heading into the weekend, landing on Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham to be their next head coach. The news was met with praise from Lakers Nation, the media and NBA players and execs alike, which is a great testament to the level of respect Ham has across the league. He seems to possess the qualities the Lakers need - communication skills, versatility, a good command of x's and o's, etc. - while bringing the potential for upside as he develops. The Lakers decided this stuff matters more than a previous run or two as a head man. Good for them. Even better, the Lakers seem to have addressed the shortcomings of the Frank Vogel Era. Ham will reportedly be allowed to choose his own staff, and won't have Kurt Rambis sitting in on coaching meetings. Plus he's reportedly getting four years, guaranteed! Letting the coach do his job without meddling seems obvious, but hasn't been standard practice for the last few seasons. Whether the Lakers are afraid of bad press or have truly learned their lesson, they're addressing the issue. That's helpful. Ham's versatility matters, too, in case the Lakers feel they need to move on from Rob Pelinka next offseason. He's a guy the next GM would likely feel confident working with. That's important, because hiring Ham was the easiest thing Pelinka has to do this summer. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The good news about Ham. Why people across the league like and respect him. SEGMENT 2: Have the Lakers learned their lesson when it comes to meddling with their coaches? SEGMENT 3: Now the hard work really begins for Rob Pelinka. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers Hire Darvin Ham as Their Next Head Coach!!! EMERGENCY PODCAST!!!

Friday's show was all about why the Lakers should hire Darvin Ham, and someone must be listening. Friday evening, news broke that the Lakers have agreed to a four year contract with the former role player and long time NBA assistant to be their next head coach. The news was met with excitement from LeBron James, who tweeted out his support. Similar messages will undoubtedly be coming through the holiday weekend. It's a good move for the Lakers, who had an efficient, well run process leading them to a solid result. They learned some lessons, apparently, by giving Ham a fourth year, and while no dollar figures are yet available, it seems unlikely LA skimped there, either. Ham will now fill out his coaching staff, which shouldn't be hard given the respect he garners, and then Rob Pelinka will need to give Ham a team that can win games. That's a much tougher task. But for now, it's good news, Lakers fans! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Why Darvin Ham Should Coach the Lakers, and Is a Kyrie Irving/Russell Westbrook Trade Worth the Risk?

The Lakers are down to Terry Stotts, Kenny Atkinson and Darvin Ham. One will be the next head coach. So after a series of scouting reports breaking down each guy, who ought to be the hire? The answer is Ham, but why? And what about the other guys? Would either constitute a real mistake? Meanwhile, if Rob Pelinka can't do serious work improving the roster, does it even matter who coaches the Lakers next season? Speaking of new talent, the relationship between, um, "mercurial" point guard Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets has soured, with the Nets reportedly unwilling to give Irving the long-term extension everyone expected. (Not surprising, given how the last couple seasons have gone.) If he leaves Brooklyn, the oddsmakers think the Lakers are a relatively probable landing spot. Is this a good idea? How deep into the Kyrie Irving Business should the Lakers get, even if it means getting rid of Russell Westbrook? Might it be time for some unconventional thinking to get the most from an unconventional guy? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: On Terry Stotts and Kenny Atkinson. Not the best choice, but are they bad choices? SEGMENT 2: Darvin Ham, and why he's the best candidate for the job. SEGMENT 3: Kyrie Irving... the Laker? Would you? Under what circumstances? LeBron James Makes All-NBA Third Team: Why It Raises Tough Questions for the Lakers

LeBron James has made the All-NBA Third Team. On the one hand, it's a remarkable achievement, given his age and mileage. The level of play he put out this year was pretty remarkable, even before considering how long he's been at it. There isn't much, if any, precedent. On the other hand, the reason James made the third team and not first or second? 56 games. That's how many he played, and it's the third year he's missed a significant number of games since joining the Lakers. So on the one hand, LeBron James is still demonstrably excellent. On the other, it's getting harder and harder to rely on James to be on the court to demonstrate that excellence. So what do the Lakers do? When it comes to figuring out how "in" to go with a James-led team, whether "all" or something more conservative, balancing the paradox of James is a real pickle. Can the Lakers make enough improvements around him (and presumably Anthony Davis) to not squander his final seasons, as seems to be the fear? Would desperate attempts not to waste James only put the Lakers in a deeper hole than they already are? The answer to this question frames basically every decision facing the team this offseason, and getting to it is really, really hard. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron James makes the All-NBA Third Team. Why it's a good thing and a problem at the same time. SEGMENT 2: James can no longer be relied on to stay healthy. How does that impact the way the Lakers can build around him? SEGMENT 3: How big a championship opportunity do the Lakers need to make an "all in" play worth it? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! We've covered Terry Stotts and Kenny Atkinson. Now it's time to scout the presumptive frontrunner for the Lakers head coach, Bucks assistant (and former Lakers assistant) Darvin Ham. He's widely respected among players and coaches around the league, and ticks a lot of boxes. Great communicator. Paid his dues. Worked on excellent staffs. LeBron James reportedly prefers him over the other two candidates. But on the other hand, Ham has never been an NBA head coach. So is he ready for the job? Kane PIttman, host of Locked On Bucks, joins the show to deliver a full scouting report on Ham, from his strengths and weaknesses to his responsibilities on Mike Budenholzer's staff. What would a Ham-led Lakers squad look like? Moreover, how much do we put on coaches that may not be their responsibility, ultimately? Can Ham overcome a lousy roster construction? Micromanagement? Is the Lakers job one where, as a first-time coach, he can dictate at least some of the terms under which he works? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky (with Guest, Kane Pittman!) SEGMENT 1: Getting to know Darvin Ham! SEGMENT 2: Strengths and weaknesses. What does a Ham squad look like? SEGMENT 3: What about the Lakers job? Is it still a great one, taken under any conditions? Kenny Atkinson Scouting Report: Is He a Good Choice to Coach the Lakers?

Former Brooklyn Nets coach Kenny Atkinson is reportedly (along with Darvin Ham and Terry Stotts) among the finalists for the Lakers head coaching job. His tenure hit a high point while guiding a young team featuring D'Angelo Russell, Spencer Dinwiddie and Jarrett Allen, but once Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving arrived, Atkinson's job security felt immediately in danger, which raises questions about his ability to coach LeBron James, Anthony Davis and (possibly) Russell Westbrook. Then again, in fairness to Atkinson, his time in Brooklyn was also very specifically weird, meaning it may not be fair to think of him as best suited for a rebuilding squad, rather than one with a directive to be ready for primetime. All these issues (and more!) are presented to Adam Ambrecht, co-host of the Locked On Nets podcast, who covered the man who preceded Steve Nash. Armbrecht shares thoughts on Atkinson's pros and cons, his system, the fit alongside big stars, and whether he got a fair shake. Plus, which franchise would you rather be at this moment, and is Kyrie manufacturing excuses to get out of playing 82 games a year? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Segment 1: Adam Ambrecht breaks down Kenny Atkinson's alternately successful, underwhelming, and just weird time while coaching the Nets. Segment 2: Would Atkinson be able to handle the Lakers' star-laden locker room? Does his personality lend itself well to this? Segment 3: Are the Nets or Lakers in a worse place as a franchise now and moving forward? Plus, Andy asks Adam about his theory that Kyrie Irving doesn't want to play basketball full-time. The coaching search is, by all reports, getting near a conclusion as the Lakers are down to three candidates: Milwaukee assistant coach Darvin Ham, former Portland head coach Terry Stotts, and former Brooklyn head coach Kenny Atkinson. Three very different names, with different qualifications, strengths and weaknesses, and no one candidate sticks out as the obvious choice. Given who is available, it's a reasonable group to narrow down to, but how do the Lakers make the final choice? Should it be the potential of Ham, who has never been a head coach before? Atkinson, who had a successful-if-strange stint with the Nets? Or the safe-and-unsexy Stotts, with a long track record in Portland? So much depends on what kind of team the Lakers want to put together. Can they tailor a roster to the strengths of each guy? Which guy would adapt best to the best team the Lakers can find? And who, exactly, is helping make the decision? Are the right people in the room, particularly relative to the last time teh Lakers went through this process? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are down to three candidates. Does the list make sense? SEGMENT 2: The appeal of Darvin Ham. The Lakers have a Russell Westbrook Problem, and Betonline.ag has the newest odds out for where he might end up should he end up moved. (Kyrie Irving, too, and the Lakers are high on that list.) It's filled with the usual suspects: Indiana, New York, Oklahoma City, Houston... but one team that's not there? Miami. And, prompted by a comment from a listener, maybe it's time to think about the Heat as a potential trade partner? How about Westbrook for Kyle Lowry and Duncan Robinson? Why that could work for Miami, and why it might even be a bigger risk for L.A.... Oh, and what about the idea of Kyrie on the Lakers? The odds put it at 7/1 if he leaves Brooklyn. Under what circumstances would Irving-to-LA look good? Finally, Austin Reaves got some love in the All-Rookie voting, one of the only positive stories to come from this dumpster fire of a season. What his success says about the strategy the Lakers need to adopt this summer. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The oddsmakers have spoken. Where might Kyrie and Russ land? Would Kyrie in LA be a good thing? SEGMENT 2: Looking at potential destinations for Westbrook. Floating a hypothetical that takes him to Miami. Former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson has, reportedly, noted support for point guard Russell Westbrook, who (as was noted on Wednesday's show) has a pretty decent chance of being in a Lakers uniform next season. Or at the least, being eligible to wear one, assuming the Lakers don't buy him out or pay him to sit on the sidelines. Jackson reportedly believes Westbrook wasn't utilized properly this season and is a fan of his talent. All of that could mean a lot of things, and all of it kinda makes fans a little nervous. Particularly those who don't think Jackson should have a significant voice in choosing the next head coach. So is the concern warranted? As always, God is in the details. Does "support" for Westbrook mean advocating for the Lakers to keep him? For trying to make the best of it if they can't find a good deal? Big difference between just those. From there, it's a Westbrook Thought Experiment. And it's a bold one! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Phil Jackson reportedly is a Westbrook fan. What does that mean, exactly? Tuesday, the show was centered around the hypothetical idea of the Lakers trading Anthony Davis. Why they ought to at least consider it, how it might help LeBron James and what kinds of packages they should look for. (Especially when trading Russell Westbrook is/should be a higher priority.) It's a thought exercise as much as anything—the Lakers are very unlikely to actually move him—but gets to the challenge of this offseason. It elicited a lot of reaction, which kicks off Wednesday's episode as well. People thought it was a great idea or a monumentally stupid one, with very little in the middle. Which gets to how complicated the repair job is for the Lakers. There is no clear path, it's a bunch of options all muddy and overgrown. Wouldn't they be better off just rolling with the core they have, asks one listener to Locked On Lakers on YouTube? Very possibly! But possibly, not, too. Meanwhile, reports from Sam Amick at The Athletic suggest the Lakers are talking to potential head coaching candidates about how they'd use Westbrook this season. Fans reacted poorly, but it would be malpractice not to have a plan for him, as a player, on the floor. He could be here, for sure, and if he is the Lakers need at least to try and use him. Finally, LeBron really doesn't like being out of the playoff spotlight. He did a Q/A this week, and while the results were relatively mild, the fact he did it at all was revealing. What would you want to ask him if given the opportunity? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Reacting to listener reaction about the concept of trading Davis. SEGMENT 2: Fans are upset the Lakers are talking to coaching candidates about Westbrook. SEGMENT 3: LeBron's Q/A, and inability to chillax while the playoffs go on. The Lakers face some serious challenges in rebuilding a championship caliber team. If the goal is still to maximize LeBron James, is the best way to do that by trading Anthony Davis? What exactly would that look like? What kind of return could the Lakers get? Would they be better off targeting another established star, or would it be better to try to use Davis to find two or three young starting caliber players? Depth, you may remember, was a problem for the Lakers this year. Those questions, and more, are at the core of Part II of the conversation with Daman Rangoola (@damanr), a huge favorite on Lakers Twitter and a must follow for Lakers fans. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky with Guest Daman Rangoola SEGMENT 1: How Davis disappointed in multiple ways this season, and calls into question whether he should be counted on to be the superstar that the Lakers build around once LeBron is gone. Especially if he's not going to be on the floor for more than 50 games a season. Is this the best way to build depth on the team? SEGMENT 2: Could the Lakers do better by getting players who aren't as good as Davis, but are more reliably available? Does it matter that the Lakers don't get "equal" value at least insofar as star power goes? And kicking off some trade hypotheticals. SEGMENT 3: More trade hypotheticals. If you're going to move him, do you have to get the idea of the "ideal" Anthony Davis out of your head, when it comes to assessing what a good or bad trade looks like? The Lakers are on the outside looking in, with Golden State vs. Dallas in the Western Conference Finals, and Phoenix and Memphis, the top two seeds, knocked out. So does that mean there are no dominant teams in the Western Conference? Or a ton of excellent teams? Are there really one or two teams the Lakers need to catch, or is it a matter of leapfrogging six or seven legit contender-quality teams? Just how capable are the Lakers of making up that gap in an offseason where they have no margin for error? Now does it frame the disappointment of this season? How does all of that impact the future of LeBron James? That's all on the table with Daman Rangoola, a fixture of NBA social media (@damanr) and a favorite of Lakers-centric Twitter, in the first of two, TWO!, episodes. Like it, love it or hate it, HBO's "Winning Time" has been a huge topic of conversation among Lakers fans (and former Lakers) for the last few weeks. Today, author Jeff Pearlman, whose "Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s" provided the foundation for the series, joins the show. Pearlman talks about the surreal nature of seeing your work adapted for screen, the process of understanding how source material can be changed for storytelling purposes, and the controversies that have built up around the show. Moreover, Pearlman, who also chronicled the Shaquille O'Neal/Kobe Bryant/Phil Jackson Threepeat squads in "Three Ring CIrcus" is steeped in Lakers culture, and has a lot to say about how the team got to the state its in now - LeBron plays a factor - and the way history influences how the team operates. Scouting Terry Stotts: Would He Be a Good Fit as Head Coach of the Lakers?

Other names have dominated the conversation (including on this podcast) but quietly, former Portland head coach Terry Stotts has become the odds-on favorite to be hired as the next head coach of the Lakers. And while he wouldn't qualify as a particularly exiting hire, the 64-year old Stotts has a reputation for designing good offenses and led the Blazers to a near-decade of uninterrupted playoff appearances. Then again, those Portland teams hit a wall, and Stotts was fired. So would he be a good replacement for Frank Vogel, working with (presumably) LeBron James and Anthony Davis (and, at least for now, Russell Westbrook)? Mike Richman, host of Locked On Blazers, joins the show to break down all things Stotts. Plus, how many teams around the league would switch circumstances with the Lakers? Like, coach, GM, owner, roster, cap situation, draft capital and so on? Basically everything save city, building and uniforms? Are the Blazers in a better spot than the Lakers? Richman weighs in. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Scouting Terry Stotts. What's he good at? Is the reputation as an offensive innovator deserved? SEGMENT 2: What might Stotts look like as coach of the Lakers and LeBron? What about the shortcomings Blazers teams had on D? SEGMENT 3: Would Mike rather be the Lakers or the Blazers right now? Lakers owner/governor Jeanie Buss gave a rare interview with Bill Plaschke of the LA Times. She covered a lot of ground, starting with her frustration around this season's big, bold and ultimately wasted investments, and growing impatience with the direction the team has been trending. Buss also discussed accountability, putting herself at the top of the decision tree and noting she'd be willing to make whatever tough decisions are required going forward. And there was much discussion of other branches on that tree, from GM Rob Pelinka to special hoops advisor Kurt Rambis to... whatever Linda Rambis is. Buss says that Linda Rambis isn't involved in basketball operations, but also didn't really clarify exactly what she is doing, either. So in the end, did the interview make you feel better about the team than you did Tuesday morning? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Jeanie Buss speaks with the LA Times. This, in itself, is worth talking about. She hasn't communicated much with Lakers fans directly or through the media, and it hasn't helped the franchise. SEGMENT 2: What does accountability mean? Would Buss be willing to fire Pelinka if needed? What about Kurt Rambis? SEGMENT 3: What's the deal with Linda? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Quin Snyder Seems Set in Utah. How Does That Impact the Lakers' Coaching Search?

Quin Snyder met with the media in Utah Monday, and while he didn't explicitly say "I'm not leaving the Jazz to go coach the Lakers," he made it pretty clear he's not intending to go anywhere. The Jazz have made it clear they're not firing him. So while he was surely a long shot anyway, it's pretty clear now that Quin Snyder won't be the next coach of the Lakers. Where does that leave them? With a bunch of lower profile candidates, most of whom will be very hard to separate in concrete terms. So that means they'll have to decide the qualities they seek, and the type of team they want to build and choose accordingly. That's a process question, and one the Lakers have struggled with of late. So far, though, the process has looked pretty good! A diverse list of names, no groups included or excluded for dumb cosmetic reasons. Will it continue. Meanwhile, Monday's show included a lot of talk about Mark Jackson and reasons he might not be the best choice for L.A.. It generated a lot of commentary on the Locked On Lakers YouTube page. How much does Jackson's open, strong Christian faith (he's an ordained minister who tied that faith into his coaching with Golden State) count as a strike against him? Is the media (including the hosts of this show) being unfair on that end? Finally, how important is it the Lakers find a coach who can handle Russell Westbrook? Reports have noted that the bad chemistry between Russ and Frank Vogel was an important factor in letting Vogel go. But he's going to be traded, right? Well... HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Quin Snyder looks like he's staying put. How does that impact the coaching search? SEGMENT 2: Responding to questions about questions about Mark Jackson. The Sacramento Kings have settled on former Lakers head coach Mike Brown, in a bit of an upset given the attention that had been given to Mark Jackson as a favorite for the gig. Jackson, though, has interviewed for the Lakers job, so the fact he's still on the market seems very relevant. He does reportedly have the support of LeBron James, but the Lakers (who didn't hire Ty Lue when given the chance a few years ago) have shown that at least when it comes to coaches, they don't always do LeBron's bidding. Does it matter that Kings owner Vivek Ranadive, one of the worst owners in the Association, was reportedly a big booster of Jackson while the basketball ops folks weren't? What about Jackson? He, like Brown, would be a "retread," but one with a very different path and background. He's been talked about for all sorts of jobs since Golden State fired him in 2014, including the Lakers position the last time around. If the Lakers really are going to bring him in, it certainly seems they should have some guarantees from LeBron that he'll be sticking around, first. Finally, should the Lakers maybe wait long enough to build a roster before they hire the coach, and try to match the roster they have to the coach they hire? Can they, with limited flexibility, give the new guy the roster he needs? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Mike Brown to Sacramento... Mark Jackson still on the market. SEGMENT 2: What reservations are fair to have about Jackson? Which ones aren't? What assurances should the Lakers need from James before committing to Jackson? After news that Phil Jackson was advising the Lakers on who to hire as the team's next head coach was a topic of conversation, reports that some people connected to the team might not be happy about it. Is it LeBron James/Rich Paul, who have clashed with Jackson before? Rob Pelinka? Agents? Other players? Why is it problematic that the Lakers seem to have so many important voices who aren't on the payroll? And oh, by the way, Jackson is reportedly a big Russell Westbrook fan. Might his involvement increase the chances Westbrook returns? Because Lakers fans should understand there's a very real possibility Westbrook could return next season. The Lakers might find it hard to move him in a deal that doesn't hurt them, first and foremost, and if he's back it makes sense (or could) to try and make things work on the court before just paying him to go away. Westbrook might have a vested interest in playing and restoring some of his rep, and the Lakers could perhaps use the talent. Not saying it will happen—ideally, it seems both parties would prefer a quick divorce—just that everyone (Lakers included) needs to prepare for a different outcome. Finally, Sam Amick of The Athletic reports the Lakers are ok with the idea of going year to year with LeBron, should he choose not to sign an extension this summer. How might this arrangement benefit both sides? It could, but requires everyone to understand the arrangement very clearly. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Who might be upset that Phil Jackson has a hand in the coaching search? And why? SEGMENT 2: Why Russell Westbrook could return to the team next season. ESPN's Stephen A. Smith on Wednesday said the Lakers should trade LeBron James, since Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis torched their value, and there's no other way to improve... but is it even possible to create a deal that would make sense for both sides? Meanwhile, The Lakers coaching search has added Toronto assistant Adrian Griffin. Solid resume, though he's not even on the board when it comes to the oddsmakers forecasting who might get the job. The longest longshot? James as player-coach! Assuming he's not traded, of course. Finally, LeBron expressed his disgust at the voting for Most Improved Player, which went to Memphis guard Ja Morant. Not because he thinks Ja isn't good, but because he thinks he was too good already to even have been considered. So is he right? LeBron's problem with the voting gets to a bigger issue: Save maybe Rookie of the Year and 6th Man of the Year, does anybody really know what the criteria are to win these things? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers will interview Adrian Griffin for their head coaching gig. Good candidate? SEGMENT 2: Should the Lakers trade LeBron? So the Lakers don't appear to be in a big hurry to replace Frank Vogel with a new head coach, but as names like Quin Snyder, Darvin Ham, Nick Nurse, and others swirl around, another familiar one has surfaced as an old friend has been enlisted to help them find the right guy. Phil Jackson. Yes! Phil Jackson! What exactly can Phil bring to the coaching search? He is, by all accounts, close to Nurse, who would undoubtedly be a huge get for the purple and gold (if, and it's a big if, they could convince Toronto to let him go). On the other hand, how connected is Phil to the slate of available candidates out there? And more importantly, what does it mean that the Lakers keep going back to the same people over and over and over, and seem unable to reach outside the proverbial family for any sort of guidance? Would it kill them, perhaps, to just beef up the basketball ops department rather than asking, say, Magic Johnson for more help? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: News! Phil Jackson is apparently part of the coaching search braintrust. Why are we back here again? SEGMENT 2: What could Phil bring? In a vacuum, it's fine he's part of the search. Except we don't live in one of those, and L.A.'s inability to think creatively about consultants is distressing. On Monday's episode, ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz broke down the bind the Lakers (with LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook), and other "mercenary" style NBA teams like the Clippers and Nets face when building a roster that tries not only to have talent but cohesion and culture. The second half of the show focuses on their coaching vacancy, which is seemingly thought of by Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss as too big for a first-timer like, say, former Lakers/current Bucks assistant Darvin Ham? Well, according to Arnovitz, not so much. He points to Ham as a blindingly obvious candidate for the Lakers to interview (which he actually said before news broke into the weekend that the Lakers will, in fact, talk with him). Are there other assistants out there the Lakers should be paying attention to? What about among the "retreads?" All of this points to big questions about the process we're about to see play out. There are no slam dunk obvious candidates. There are many the Lakers could probably find success with, if that coach is given the right tools, the right roster, and a culture that makes sense. Will that happen? Are the Lakers more concerned about winning the press conference? Keeping control in the basketball ops department by choosing assistants and having Kurt Rambis sit in on coaches meeting We're about to find out. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky (Guest: Kevin Arnovitz) SEGMENT 1: The narrative is the Lakers aren't a "starter job." It's one belied by their history. Will the Lakers limit themselves, though? Heading into this season, the Lakers, with a superteam headed by LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, were considered among the favorites to win a championship. But like the equally star-laden Nets and Clippers, now find themselves with questions to ponder after a massively disappointing season. Around the league, is chasing stars at all cost emerging as a faulty approach? Joining today's show is ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz, one of the smartest basketball writers out there, who introduced the idea in a column a couple weeks ago. One major problem he identifies is culture and chemistry, and the challenges sustaining either in situations where stars come from the outside and don't have any proverbial skin in the game. The Lakers certainly had problems with both this season. Do they need to create some sense of culture that reaches past "Superstars!" What are the problems that can come with the "all mercenary" superteam construction? Wh does it matter if players don't have deeper skin in the game, that can come from spending time in an organization during more formative periods? What might be happening on Earth 2, where the Lakers made a point of leveraging the talent of the "Baby Lakers," rather than making it abundantly clear that the only purpose of the young guys was as trade fodder for a star. What is LeBron's future with the team? Why it might benefit the Lakers to build a culture that goes deeper than "superstars... and go!" HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky (Guest, Kevin Arnovitz!) SEGMENT 1: Why the Superteam! construction might be in peril. Where they tend to go wrong. SEGMENT 2: What can the Lakers rebuild a culture given all their roster turnover? In Part I of our conversation with Jovan Buha of The Athletic, we covered the LeBron James and Anthony Davis core, how viable it is, and what the Lakers might do to improve the supporting cast around them this summer. Central to that is the future of Russell Westbrook. Part II starts there. First and foremost, Jovan doesn't think the Lakers can bring Westbrook back, at least in a basketball playing capacity. If he's on the roster, the Lakers pay him to stay away. So that leaves a trade. What is realistic? Could the Lakers get Indiana to trade Malcolm Brogdon and Buddy Hield to LA? Would that cost them both of their available first round picks? Would that be worth it? What about the head coach? Whatever identity the team forges moving forward will come, at least in part, from the influence of the guy on the sidelines. Could the Lakers land a big fish like Nick Nurse? What about Quin Snyder or Doc Rivers if either becomes available? Mark Jackson? Would the Lakers take a shot on a coach with no experience as a head man? What about Mike Brown? He's an interesting story from the "retread" category. Would he be more appealing than a name brand like Rivers or Jackson? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky (Guest: Jovan Buha of The Athletic) SEGMENT 1: What to do with Russ. Is a really good trade out there? How about kinda good? The Lakers have a lot of work to do this offseason, but one of the more foundational bits of business is figuring out what they still have in their star core. After two years of injuries scuttling seasons, is the core of LeBron James and Anthony Davis still one that can be reliably championship caliber? If the Lakers are nervous about the pairing, what exactly can they do to move on? Can they have Lebron but not necessarily go all in to win with him? This is the starting point of a two-part conversation with The Athletic's Jovan Buha, It kicks off answering the "What do they have?" question regarding James and Davis, and from there moves into "What can they get to make things better?" Should re-signing Malik Monk really be the team's top priority? Are there more pressing needs, even if Monk represents their most positive contributor from this season who isn't under contract? What else can the Lakers do? How much of the roster improvement is tied to the Westbrook deal? So many questions, with some difficult answers for the Lakers. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky (with Guest, Jovan Buha!) SEGMENT 1: Jovan, Andy and Brian debate the strength of the LeBron/AD core. Have injuries sucked away too much potential? SEGMENT 2: Jovan breaks down where the Lakers can go from here. With few avenues to improve, they'll have to be very smart about how they plan and execute an offseason strategy.
