Very little has gone according to plan for the Lakers this season, and that drumbeat continued Tuesday as the Lakers learned LeBron James would be forced into the league's Covid health and safety protocols. How long he'll be out depends on his symptoms and how fast he returns two negative tests, but at the least he'll miss Friday's game against the Clippers, and it would be prudent to plan on him being out for a couple more after. By now, the Lakers know what it's like to play without him, even if "knowing" doesn't mean "succeeding." They'll have to figure it out, and in the second half Tuesday, seemed to come up with a pretty good formula: Work really hard, and play real defense. After a terribly lazy first half against the Kings, Frank Vogel laid into the group, and it worked. The Lakers blew the doors of Sacramento over the final 24 minutes, turning a nine-point halftime deficit into a 25-point win. It was led by Anthony Davis and a strong second half from Russell Westbrook. Malik Monk was great, as was... Dwight Howard (!!!) who was not expecting to play (because Vogel told him he wouldn't) but was inserted into the game early for an ineffective DeAndre Jordan. Howard responded with his best game of the season, by a mile. Does that mean he's the primary "traditional big" going forward? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers were awful early against Sacramento, but responded to a halftime butt chewing from Vogel. In the end, they had a moment to feel good about themselves. No small thing for a group that has struggled. SEGMENT 2: Dwight Howard emerges. Does this game fundamentally change the way Vogel uses his center pairing? SEGMENT 3: LeBron in the protocols. How long might he be out? How does it hurt them if LBJ misses another 3-6 games? LeBron James and Russell Westbrook Fuel Win Over the Pistons. Is the Lakers' Rotation changing?

There was nothing inspiring about Sunday's 110-106 win for the Lakers over the Pistons at Staples Center. After a dominant third quarter (no, seriously), it looked like L.A. might finally get themselves the type of easy win that would make it possible to have a little fun, and at least feel for a minute or two like they're a legitimately good team. To get a little swagger and build some momentum. Nope. A 19-point advantage was whittled away, and the Lakers had to hold off Detroit down the stretch. So that's the downside. The upside? They won, and given how the season has gone to this point, that's about all you can ask for. It was a good night for the Big Three, with Anthony Davis dominating early (13 first quarter points), Russell Westbrook (25/6/9 w/ only three turnovers) playing well throughout and LeBron James (33/5/9) doing LeBron things. After, they talked about building blocks and small goals as they try to right the ship. Whether the patience and calm is performative or not - really, what's the other option? - it's clear the Lakers as a group know there is a tremendous amount of work to be done. To that end, more changes in the rotation are coming. Vogel indicated that they plan to lean more into small ball, particularly in the second units, which means that for the time being fans are likely to see DeAndre Jordan or Dwight Howard on any given night, but likely not both. That's good! And while you can debate which guy is better or when he should play, some of that is just not all that important. On the other hand, Avery Bradley still looks like he's going to absorb a decent chunk of playing time, night to night. That's a little harder to defend. On to Sacramento! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: A win's a win's a win's a win, right? SEGMENT 2: What do the Lakers think of themselves? And is LeBron, who aggrivated that ab/groin thing on Sunday, really as "good to go" as he claims? SEGMENT 3: The rotation may change, again. What to expect, and will it help? Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! But even if Locked On Lakers listeners didn't enjoy their dinner (or their families), they at least got to bask in the glow of Wednesday's strong Lakers victory over the Indiana Pacers. The 124-116 OT win capped the Lakers' roadie at 2-3, and featured some extremely interesting wrinkles. You had Anthony Davis missing the game due to the effects of the fever he fought through to play in New York, and hasn't yet shaken. You had strong supporting performances from Malik Monk and Wayne Ellington, along with 20 hard-fought points from Russell Westbrook, who didn't shoot particularly well, but got to the free throw line eleven times, hitting nine. You had the Lakers clawing back after being down for nearly the entire game. And then you had an incredible performance down the stretch from LeBron James, who scored 15 points during the last two minutes of regulation and overtime. He also spent a large chunk of the game playing small-ball center, a look that helped fuel the comeback, and unlock a strong version of the Lakers. Could this become part of the Lakers' identity moving forward? And finally, an interesting GQ interview with Dwight Howard, who talked Lakers, roses, snakes, and more! Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: LeBron's still got it, folks! SEGMENT TWO: Could LeBron at center play a role in helping a rudderless Lakers discover an identity? The Lakers dropped another game Tuesday in New York. As they did Sunday in Detroit, they fell down big (this time by 25) and as it was in Detroit, they tried hard to climb out of the hole. But while the Pistons ultimately acquiesced, the Knicks did enough in the fourth quarter to hold on. The Lakers were betrayed by the defense early (36 points allowed in the first quarter) and the offense late (19 fourth quarter points) in a way that felt like a microcosm of the season as a whole. Still guys missing (most notably the suspended LeBron James), other guys not right (Anthony Davis had the flu, messing with Frank Vogel's already strained rotations) and they couldn't seem to get everything working at the same time for 48 minutes. Meanwhile, Russell Westbrook was a bright spot, going for 31/13/10, with a pair of steals and three triples. He hit eight of his nine free throws. Overall, Westbrook, notorious for his slow starts, continues to round into solid form on a faster trajectory than he often does. But how will it look next to LeBron and Davis once they play 10 games in a row, all together. (Which presumes fate will even allow that, of course.) And what should be made of Talen Horton-Tucker's third straight bad game? No points at all vs. New York, and a whole lot of reckless play. If he can't settle into that two-way role the Lakers desperately need, who can? Finally, Vogel said some fascinating stuff following the game about what they're trying as a coaching staff. Intentional or not, it could be read as a defense of his work and a clear commentary on the clay he's been asked to mold. They're trying all sorts of stuff, and none of it is working because the pieces aren't capable. Was he really trying to defend himself against mounting criticism? Was it a shot, even a quiet one, across the bow of management? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What went wrong vs. the Knicks. Again. SEGMENT 2: Westbrook rises while THT scuffles. How do things like this complicate Vogel's rotation choices? SEGMENT 3: Passive aggressive? Pointed? Unintentional? It wasn't exactly a surprise, but the NBA handed down some discipline to LeBron James and the Lakers following Sunday's brawl in Detroit. One game for James as punishment for a reckless and dangerous fist/elbow to the face of Pistons center Isaiah Stewart (who got two games for going bat-bleep crazy in the aftermath, trucking nearly every member of the Pistons staff trying to hold him back). One more game without James, at this point, isn't going to define the season, but does gin up questions about the team's character, and how they think of themselves. They came into the season with the belief they're an elite, title caliber squad. Everyone, players and coaches alike, needs to adjust to the reality of what this team is right now. And what they are is not all that good. If Sunday's fight is going to be the type of turning point the players said it could be, the Lakers need a change of mindset, not just more focus or hustle. Meanwhile, Frank Vogel shared some reasons Monday why he went back to a larger starting lineup featuring DeAndre Jordan at center, and at it's core is a belief that that the team simply wasn't tough enough defensively. Not exactly what you want to hear as a fan. Finally, Vogel finds himself second on a list no coach wants to be on - Vegas odds for the next coach fired, now that Luke Walton has been canned by the Kings. The Lakers may not want to pull the trigger, for a variety of reasons, but how many other levers does the organization have at its disposal? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron is suspended one game. Right call? Wrong call? And how will they react? SEGMENT 2: Everyone, from coaches on down, needs to start adjusting to the team they are now. Coaches to the capabilities of the roster, and players to shed the entitlement that comes with knowing you're elite, and the need to pace yourself through a season. Because these Lakers aren't that good, yet. SEGMENT 3: Vogelwatch has hit Las Vegas! What goes into this decision for the Lakers? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! So... uh... what the hell happened Sunday afternoon in Detroit? Well, to begin, the Lakers won 121-116, which is obviously the most important detail. But along way... wow. You had the Lakers allow a horrific offensive Pistons squad score SIXTY-EIGHT (68) first half points. You had LeBron James getting ejected after hitting Isaiah Stewart in the face with a rough (if truly inadvertent) elbow to the face, followed by Stewart needing to be held back by roughly 1000 people for around twenty minutes before play resumed. You had the Lakers starting the fourth quarter down 15 to a (then) 4-11 opponent. And finally, you had Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook leading a fourth quarter blitz to get the Lakers a desperately needed win. (Or just avoid a horribly embarrassing loss. However you wanna put it.) After the win, DeAndre Jordan and other players framed the comeback and its context as a potential galvanizer for the season moving forward. Is that even possible, much less realistic? And as long as the future is being discussed, does Davis, rather than Westbrook or LeBron need to be the Lakers' clear cut best player for them to become championship-caliber. Andy thinks so, and explains why. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: What to make of this very strange afternoon? And can the win galvanize the Lakers through what's been a season-long struggle? SEGMENT TWO: Did LeBron deserve an ejection? LeBron James is officially listed as questionable for tonight's game in Boston against the Celtics, and ESPN's Dave McMenamin has reported that sources close to the situation peg him as "50/50." It's hard to feel completely confident about LeBron's availability today, given his recently slower recoveries from injuries, and the general malaise created this season by poor health, but there's little doubt his presence alone should help get the Lakers headed in a better direction. (Although frankly, if the team plays like they did against Milwaukee on the rest of this road trip, even without LeBron, they should win some games.) And the timing of LeBron's return matters. Not just for the team, but quite possibly for Frank Vogel's job security. The franchise didn't offer him much in the way of a commitment with a one-year extension, and should this turbulent start to the season continue, it's easy to speculate whether the team would part ways with the coach. It's sometimes easy to wonder if they're actually looking for a reason to rip the band-aid. It might not be fair to Vogel, but "fair" ain't part of this particular equation. And finally, is there a "best" lineup for the Lakers? Have we even seen enough to know? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron's return. Will it happen tonight? How much should we be worried about his availability moving forward? SEGMENT 2: How endangered, if at all, is Vogel's job if the Lakers keep hovering around .500? The Lakers could use some good news, and per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, that's on the horizon. LeBron James may be returning the court as soon as Friday in Boston against the Celtics. To put it mildly, his seven game absence (eight counting Wednesday in Milwaukee) has put a strain on the team. It's set the stage for a difficult five-game roadie, and also made it hard to even evaluate how good or bad the Lakers really are. 15 games in, it's not a cop out to say you're not sure what this roster can accomplish, because it hasn't yet been seen fully intact. But was it constructed correctly to begin with? DeMar DeRozan's recently (re)expressed desire to have become a Laker this offseason got people talking. A summertime trade with San Antonio would have been complicated to make, but what does it say about the Lakers front office that they so emphatically chose Russell Westbrook over DeRozan? Are they too drawn to superstar names, when a mere All-Star talent might have been more sensible? And was a trade for Westbrook necessary, anyway? To wit, a fascinating Locked On Lakers YouTube channel comment from THEFFF198: "THT potentially making the leap makes the Russ trade look even worse, lmao." Does THEFFF have a point? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Segment 1: LeBron's coming back soon. How quickly can he get the Lakers back on track? Through 14 games, the 2021-22 season for the Lakers had been a struggle, filled with injuries, frustration and inconsistency. But there had been at least some signs, here and there, that things might be improving. Anthony Davis has been pretty excellent throughout. Russell Westbrook has been growing incrementally better, some intermittent Westbrookian hiccups notwithstanding. LeBron James should be returning soon. So with all that, the Lakers took the floor Monday against the Chicago Bulls in something of a test game, as they head out Tuesday to start their first real road trip of the season. They failed. Badly. Chicago outplayed L.A. in every meaningful facet, reminding everyone that this Lakers group is a very long way from true title contention. How they navigate the path towards that elite level remains to be seen, but it'll be one with a lot more tension and speculation than anything they've seen over the last two seasons. Monday's game reinforced how dependent the team is on having the Big Three intact, and particularly the dependence on LeBron James. The supporting cast showed its limitations (though Talen Horton-Tucker finished with 28 points and six rebounds). And we're all left asking just how good this group can reasonably be expected to be, particularly on defense. At least until they get healthy. And with any team with this kind of profile, star power and expectations, a slow start is going to focus attention on the head coach. How much of this - whether looking just at Monday's loss or the season as a whole - is on Frank Vogel? How much is on Rob Pelinka? How much is on circumstance and bad luck? More fans are having that conversation, and the natives are getting restless. Without question, the first 15 games have turned the fate of the head coach into a talking point in ways it hasn't been since Vogel was hired. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What went wrong vs. Chicago. The Bulls had a great plan for Davis. What was the counter? SEGMENT 2: Should we still be surprised when the team doesn't defend well, especially when LeBron is out? Is the bigger problem the offense? The Lakers may have done their work early on Sunday with a rare non-TV motivated 12:30 pm start, but that doesn't mean they weren't really busy. They busted out a new starting lineup featuring Talen Horton-Tucker, who was making his season debut. They made it clear LeBron James was on his way back, perhaps for Monday's game against the Bulls, but if not then, sometime during the week. Oh, and they beat San Antonio behind a monster performance from Anthony Davis. So much to discuss! It starts with A.D.. Against an undersized Spurs team, Davis didn't screw around, finishing with 19 points in the first half, most coming on dunks and lobs inside (including one he fed to himself!). Davis has been excellent to start the year, both on the floor and particularly when it comes to leadership, demonstrated by his reaction to Friday's loss to Minnesota followed by his performance Sunday. Meanwhile, THT's was instant and obvious. His 17 points were two more than Kent Bazemore, who was a DNP-CD, has in November. What does THT's return mean for the rotation? Will Frank Vogel continue to go small, even as opponents get bigger? Finally, Alex Caruso will return to Staples Center Monday with the Bulls, where he'll receive a huge ovation from a fan base that still loves the guy. But after his appearance on JJ Redick's podcast last week, where he made it clear the Lakers unquestionably low-balled him, the "did the Lakers eff up?" conversation has been rekindled. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: AD dominates as the Lakers win Sunday. SEGMENT 2: THT is back? What changed with him there, and what does it mean going forward? The Lakers may not have played Thursday, but that doesn't keep the news cycle from churning. The team, no shock given happenings since the start of training camp, yet another injury. This time, it's Austin Reaves who joins the walking wounded. The hamstring that kept him out of Wednesday's game called "minor" by Frank Vogel will now keep him out at least a couple weeks. Frank, you lied to us! So that's bad news... but it wouldn't be nearly as bad as more bad reports around LeBron James. Fortunately, reporting from ESPN this week indicates that abdominal injury isn't likely worse than initially presented by the team. Whew! So with all the housekeeping out of the way, more attention can be given to Kent Bazemore, who is quietly suffering through one of the uglier early season slumps for any Laker to this point. His 3-point percentage this month? 10. 10! That's really bad! And not surprisingly, his playing time has dropped with his accuracy. Even with his defensive capabilities, the Lakers badly need credible floor spacers for the offense to operate effectively. If he can't do it, Vogel has to respond. And speaking of floor spacing, everyone knows the critical nature of it, and the conversation taking place around Lakers centers. Turns out, that floor spacing question- and the question of offensive efficiency- is about a lot more than Anthony Davis. Russell Westbrook, as noted by Cranjis McBasketball (@Tim_NBA on Twitter) of the Lakers Exceptionalism pod, plays a brand of basketball much closer to the rim when DeAndre Jordan and Dwight Howard aren't on the floor. And at-the-rim Russ is a big improvement over his cousin, Jumpshooting Russ. Finally, reading some angry mail! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Injury updates, and WTF, Kent Bazemore? SEGMENT 2: More Baze, and why the center conversation is about a lot more than Anthony Davis. SEGMENT 3: How can the Lakers get the D they need while giving Westbrook easy paths to the bucket? For a second straight game, the Lakers found themselves in overtime, and for the the second straight game they found a way to get a win. In this case, it was against a very good Miami Heat team, which made the absences of Rajon Rondo and Austin Reaves (on top of LeBron James, et al) even more of a potential obstacle to conquer. And the overall performance wasn't perfect. But it was also often quite good on both sides of the ball, and featured strong performances from Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Avery Bradley, and especially Malik Monk, who led the team in scoring with 27 points off the bench. After the win, Frank Vogel and several players noted how last Saturday's horrendous, disengaged loss to the Trail Blazers forced everyone to take a long look in the mirror and honestly assess some problems. A two-game winning streak doesn't mean everything's been fixed, and however great these Lakers can be, that level won't arrive until they have a full roster. What can be controlled until then, however, is their effort and attitudes. It was reassuring (not to mention, fun) to see a better version of both on display. In the meantime, these Lakers are now 3-0 in overtime. (Insert shrug emoji.) Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Segment one: The Kamenetzkys react to the win over the Heat, and in particular, how the Lakers have responded since Saturday's dispiriting loss to Portland, which felt potentially dangerous moving forward. Segment two: Russell Westbrook had perhaps his best game as a Laker. Segment three: Malik Monk had absolutely his best game as a Laker. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Anthony Davis and Carmelo Anthony (and Rajon Rondo!) Deliver a Critical Win for the Lakers vs. Charlotte

After Saturday's nakedly dispirited and lethargic loss to the Trail Blazers in Portland, the Lakers desperately needed to get themselves back in the win column Monday against Charlotte, even without LeBron James (among others). But just as importantly, they needed to just compete again, regardless of the results. As it turned out, both directives happened. The night wasn't especially pretty or composed, and required overtime, but at the end of the day, this 126-123 win offered reassurance that these Lakers aren't completely down on themselves. There was a superstar performance from Anthony Davis (29 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks), who played through a sprained thumb and the lingering effects of a stomach bug. (Dude threw up again during the game.) Carmelo Anthony continues to scorch the nets at Staples Center, putting up 29 points and drilling SEVEN shots from distance. And before getting ejected on a sketchy flagrant-2 call, Rajon Rondo did some brilliant play-making off the bench, setting up basket after basket for Davis. There are still *plenty* of issues to fix, and against opponents better than the slumping Hornets, the Lakers' effort likely wouldn't have been enough. But for the time being, the bleeding has been stopped, and that was extremely important. Hosts: Andy and Brian and Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: A huge, superstar performance from Anthony Davis. SEGMENT TWO: Safe to say, the Lakers would be lost without Melo. SEGMENT THREE: Some health updates on LeBron James and Talen Horton-Tucker, plus thoughts on Rajon Rondo's "break in case of emergency" importance on this team. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! So... Thursday was a bit of a bummer. The news broke mid-day that LeBron James would be at least a week thanks to an abdominal strain suffered Tuesday against Houston. Anthony Davis sprained his thumb in the first half against Oklahoma City, and while he finished the game he declared himself questionable for Saturday in Portland. Oh, and the Lakers lost to the Thunder. Again. But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy your Thursday?  So lots to unpack on Friday's episode. It starts with another loss to OKC. So what went wrong this time? It wasn't because the Lakers, who built a 19-point lead Thursday and gave that one up (like the 26-point advantage they had last week in Oklahoma), stopped playing hard. So does that make it better or worse? What can be accomplished while LeBron is on the sidelines? What if Davis joins him? Can they start to patch things up while so many important members of the rotation float in and out of the lineup? And what does it mean for the Lakers that James has to be treated so carefully now? Finally, Mike Richman, host of Locked On Blazers, joins the show to preview Saturday's game in Portland. What's ailing the Blazers and Damian Lillard? Do the Lakers get a break, catching them at a down time? And how surprised is Richman at the success Carmelo Anthony is having thus far? (Note: We talked to Mike before the Lakers coughed up a second game to OKC...) HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: So what the hell happened on Thursday night? TWO losses to the Thunder in a week? Really? SEGMENT 2: Life without LeBron. Can the Lakers survive, and more importantly, what can they accomplish while he's out? What does it mean for the Lakers that he is clearly not invincible, physically, anymore? SEGMENT 3: Mike Richman talks Portland, previews Saturday's game. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Are the Lakers Going Back to Starting Two Bigs? Can They Improve The Rebounding? Was Dame Lillard Almost a Laker?

Trying to figure out just where the Lakers stand these days on either side of the ball isn't easy. Not only is the Lakers rotation in tatters thanks to a rash of early season injuries, but the schedule itself hasn't helped. The Lakers have had a run of recent success (relatively speaking) against the Rockets, for example, who are terrible. Shutting them down on Sunday, then again in the second half Tuesday, did nice things for LA's defensive rankings, but did it mean much? The same applies to the lineups deployed by Frank Vogel, who after Tuesday's win said he plans to go back, at least some, to a "two big" starting lineup, with Anthony Davis at center. Will he keep it that way all year, even when the roster is at full strength, or will the time the Lakers have missed gaining continuity force Vogel to mix and match more than he indicated he'd like during the preseason? And since Davis is playing more center now, even with the presence of DeAndre Jordan in the starting lineup for most of LA's games, than ever during his time with the Lakers, does it matter who starts? More important could be structural issues facing the team. They've been lousy on the offensive and defensive glass this season, no matter the alignments. Is that going to improve? Did we overestimate the impact Russell Westbrook would have, particularly given the other changes made to the roster this offseason? What numbers are positive for the Lakers right now? Start with where Westbrook is getting the bulk of his shots. Finally, Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports reports on a summertime meeting between Damian Lillard, LeBron and Davis. How close was Dame to being the third member of LA's Big Three? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: As the lineup turns! Vogel indicates he's gonna use two bigs... but is he also gonna do a lot of other stuff in that starting lineup? Will necessity become the mother of invention? SEGMENT 2: Can the Lakers get better on the glass? What numbers are encouraging from early in the season, despite uneven play? SEGMENT 3: What if Lillard became a Laker? What does it say about him that he took the meeting, but ultimately wasn't inclined to leave Portland? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis Dominate vs. Houston... But Can the Lakers Play Defense?

So on the one hand, the Lakers got huge, mega-star performances from their three mega-stars. They won on Tuesday, running their record to a more tidy 5-3 after a very shaky start (in the win/loss column, at least). Russell Westbrook continues to look much more comfortable playing with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, seeming to settle into an attacking rhythm and turning the ball over a lot less (four or fewer in four of his last five games). On the other hand... The Lakers surrendered 70 (70!!!) points to the HOUSTON ROCKETS in the first half of Tuesday's win. The same Rockets who entered the game as the league's 28th most efficient offensive team. Or, put another way, the 3rd most inefficient. They were nearly victimized by two late side-out-of-bounds plays that left Houston a half second or so from going to the line with a chance to tie the game. The Rockets suck, and the Lakers only won by two. So there's that. Bottom line, the Lakers continue to drive their fans crazy, benefitting only local cardiologists and other dispensers of heart care. It's going to be a bumpy ride, people. And what will it look like as players get back off the injury list and onto the court? Is Malik Monk feeling some footsteps, whether from Austin Reaves or the impending return of Wayne Ellington and Kendrick Nunn (not to mention Talen Horton-Tucker)? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers win, and the Big Three is dominant. Let's talk about why... SEGMENT 2: LeBron says Westbrook is starting to "fit out," meaning he's playing like Russell Westbrook should play. Not trying to be someone he's not because others think that's what happens for the Lakers to thrive. What was the evidence on Tuesday? Is he turning a corner? SEGMENT 3: Austin Reaves is earning playing time, while Malik Monk seems to be bleeding it. Is it possible Monk is pressing because he knows those already-shrinking minutes could disappear once the roster is healthy? Is he attacking the time he's getting the right way? The Lakers are coming off a win where they held Houston to 85 points. Granted, the Rockets are a godawful team, with about six months of collective NBA experience between the players, but that's still a very low score. Is this a sign of the Lakers starting to drill down on Frank Vogel's defensive principles? Without getting ahead of ourselves... perhaps. Russell Westbrook talked after Monday's practice pretty candidly about how he needs to adjust some past habits of gambling and going for steals, and play within a more structured defensive scheme. Westbrook isn't known (rightly) as a particularly good defender, and correcting bad habits isn't simple, especially for superstars used to getting their way, but trying to is the first step. And an important one, since this team isn't blessed with enough plus defenders where guys can get away with doing their own thing. Along these lines, Avery Bradley's minutes have been steadily rising, which wasn't necessarily expected when he signed a late preseason non-guaranteed deal. But perhaps it should have been, because Vogel loves Bradley, and Bradley is a very conscientious, determined defender. It doesn't feel coincidental that he's starting to play more, nor does it feel as certain that his stay with the team will be short. If he's a permanent part of the rotation, particularly once guys like Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn return, what will that mean for the divvying of minutes? For that matter, do we imagine him as a permanent part of a small ball starting lineup like Vogel ran out Sunday? Finally, Carmelo Anthony is thriving as a sixth man, but takes exception with a narrative where it's surprising that he'd accept this role. Does he have a point? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: Are the Lakers turning a defensive corner? SEGMENT TWO: Is Avery Bradley due for more minutes on a regular basis? The Lakers are now above .500 after a 95-85 win over a seriously hapless Houston Rockets squad, and by flipping their typical script. For once, it was their defense that was most reliable, while the offense was spotty. Granted, it snuck up on Brian that the Lakers' offense has been so effective in the first place, but frankly, given the defense the front office sacrificed this offseason to improve the scoring, it ought to be better. Take away a penchant for awful turnovers, like the Lakers actually did on Sunday, and for the most part, that's been the case. But how much was the improved defense indicative of better execution vs. the fortune of a terrible opponent? It's hard to say. But similar to Carmelo Anthony's four block/two steal night, which isn't likely to be repeated anytime soon, as long as the Lakers can regularly do something in between tonight and their most pathetic, at least some issues can be fixed until the return of potentially helpful folks like Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn. (This is another area where if the Lakers stopped turning the ball over so much, it would help a lot.) Finally, Frank Vogel changed the starting lineup, sliding Anthony Davis to center and putting Avery Bradley into the backcourt alongside Russell Westbrook. The decision was sparked in part by Dwight Howard's unavailability (neck stiffness), so they needed DeAndre Jordan as a backup center option. But it was something Vogel had considered anyway, and the Rockets were a good match for this experiment. Time will tell how often Vogel keeps this look, but either way, it felt like a sign of more minutes to come for Bradley. The sting of Wednesday's loss to Oklahoma City, in which the Lakers blew a 26-point lead, is still pretty fresh. The concern over a second straight missed game for LeBron James is palpable. Kendrick Nunn, Talen Horton-Tucker, Trevor Ariza and Wayne Ellington remain on the sidelines. The Lakers have not even staged a single practice with their full roster intact, and it's not going to get better anytime soon. So what exactly can accomplish right now? Those are the big issues for Friday's show, starting with LeBron's ankle injury. No word yet about his status for Friday's game against Cleveland at Staples Center, but whether he plays or not, given his injury history with the Lakers, how much concern should missed games in the first couple weeks create? Especially given how critical he is to the team's identity and on-court continuity? What about the defense? Guys are missing, for sure. How much impact will the return of important rotation players actually have? On the one hand, the guys they're missing are among the team's best defenders. On the other, we're not talking about a bunch of Defensive Player of the Year candidates, here. Are the Lakers going to be too reliant on LeBron and Anthony Davis to play high end defense for an entire season? What does that mean for their health, and the ability to produce on the other end? How good is good enough? Finally, it's time to check out Davis, who was the subject of an interesting mini-debate on Lakers Twitter about his performance thus far. How has his offense evolved? Where are the shots coming from this year relative to others in L.A.? Should Davis abandon the 3-point shot, which he's been encouraged to take for a while now? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Ok, LeBron's hurt. It's ok to be nervous, right? Because he's the sun around which the rest of this stuff orbits? SEGMENT 2: What's real and what's not through five games, particularly on defense. How much is fixable today, what might be fixed when guys get healthy, and once they are back... just how good can this team be? SEGMENT 3: Davis is managing very high expectations. How has he played? Is the shot selection as ideal as it should be? Spoiler alert: The answer to the last one has little to do with whether he plays center or power forward. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! There's always a chance the Lakers will have a more disappointing loss than the one coming Wednesday, 123-115 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but they'll certainly have to work hard to make it happen. With just 3:28 left in the first half, the Lakers were sitting on a 26-point lead against a heretofore winless, very young, super-inexperienced squad, and felt positioned to cruise towards victory. But cruising at the NBA level is an art form, and the Lakers aren't nearly good enough yet to have mastered it. Bad focus begat bad execution. Bad execution begat bad decisions. And bad decisions begat confidence for OKC, which was bad for the Lakers. And without LeBron James (ankle) available, they weren't able to dig themselves out of this hole. There's a lot to unpack from this loss. How far behind the curve the Lakers are in their rather complicated process of jelling? Will they have enough time to make up lost ground? What can they do to just survive games until they're whole? (Whenever that day ever happens.) Are they in a position to tangibly improve? And finally, it was a bad game from Russell Westbrook, who fell apart over the second half, then got tossed after taking exception to Darius Bazley dunking the ball in the final seconds with the game in hand. On a few fronts, this was ridiculous, especially coming from Russ. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Long story short, the Lakers don't look good right now. SEGMENT 2: The different ways the lack of continuity since training camp opened is hurting the Lakers' development. SEGMENT 3: A bad game from Westbrook, capped by a really dumb ejection. No LeBron James, no problem? Well, that would be the hyperbolic retelling of the Lakers' 125-121 OT win over the Spurs. James, who's nursing a sore ankle from a collision during Sunday's game against the Spurs, was definitely missed during the overtime victory, which to put it kindly, wasn't always pretty. But for a team still figuring itself out and missing a large chunk of the roster, beggars can't be choosers. You take what you can get. Plus, there were huge positives, mostly notably the performances from Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, who put the "super" and "star" in "superstar." Arguably AD's best game this season (35/17/4/4 blocks) and absolutely the high water mark from Westbrook (33/10/8/3 steals, only three turnovers), it was a reminder of why elite talent matters, as well as a promising sign of how Russ can fit in with his new team. So how did this win happen, and what does it mean for the Lakers moving forward? Brian was out for a family event, so Andy enlisted the services of former NBA video coordinator Mo Dakhil, whose work can be found at Bleacher Report, The Athletic, or following on Twitter (@MoDakhil_NBA). The two break down Browdie's star performances, the supporting cast, what can be taken from this game's atypical (one hopes, at least) context, the Lakers' ceiling on both sides of the ball, and more. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: Andy talks with Mo Dakhil about Russell Westbrook's performance, and what worked for him. 24 hours removed from Sunday's victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, there's still a lot to unpack for the Lakers with this victory. In part because the next six games (San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Cleveland, Houston, Houston AGAIN, Oklahoma City AGAIN) constitute a slate of very winnable contests (and given the bloodbath that is the west, no opportunities should ever go wasted). But also because, well, questions remain. For example, how should Frank Vogel slot undrafted rookie (and emerging fan favorite) Austin Reaves into the rotation, as he continues to make good on his increasing minutes? Who are the best players to place him alongside? Could he perhaps start games, if for no other reason than... It would mean going small with Anthony Davis at center, which would presumably remove DeAndre Jordan from the rotation, which would absolutely make fans happy. But has their scrutiny of Jordan gotten out of hand? In Andy's opinion, Jordan has caught more heat for what he represents (the obstacle standing in the way of AD at the 5) rather than his actual play, which has been largely neutral (if still unimpressive) and fairly inconsequential. Case in point, the ire directed at Jordan has allowed Dwight Howard's underwhelming play fly under the radar because he's just the backup. Truth be told, neither guy has distinguished himself particularly well over the opening three games. Still, it goes without saying that Howard remains a future first ballot Hall of Famer. Or maybe that does require voicing, since his failure to make the NBA's new Top 75 Players of All Time list feels quite personal. And frankly, wrong. Howard's personality is quite understandably not for everyone, but that shouldn't change how people should respect his credentials. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: A look at a series of very winnable games for the Lakers, and where Reaves could fit into a potential formula for victories. SEGMENT TWO: DeAndre and Dwight's minutes, and how much they're hurting. (Or at t very least, not tangibly helping much.) SEGMENT THREE: Why Dwight is right to feel disrespected by his omission from the NBA's new Top 75 list. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The 2021-22 season has been, to put it mildly, off to a rocky start for the Lakers. They went 0-fer the entire preseason, then dropped the opening pair of regular season games, the second a loss to the Phoenix Suns, featuring a variety of meltdowns over officiating and a timeout brouhaha between Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard. Frankly, the team really needed a win, and finally got one against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, 121-118. It wasn't always pretty or textbook. Budding superstar guard Ja Morant (40 points, 10 assists) carved up the Lakers' defense. The ball still gets turned over way too often. Russell Westbrook remains very inefficient from the floor. And so on and so forth. However, there were also plenty of positives. Carmelo Anthony led the Lakers with 28 points off the bench, fueling a win that saw him pass Moses Malone to become number nine on the NBA's all-time scoring list. Anthony Davis played exceptional defense inside and along the perimeter. Russell Westbrook (who notched 13 assists, albeit against nine turnovers) and LeBron James displayed some periodic flash working in tandem. And the team looked on balance its best over three games, by a significant margin. To be certain, a lot of work remains ahead of the Lakers. Like... a LOT. But everyone knew going into this season that even a successful campaign would be spent as a work in progress. That's just the deal for this particular roster. Thus, it's important to play well and improve, but sometimes you also gotta just take the W and gratefully keep it moving. And on Sunday, the Lakers ultimately did both. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: Reaction to the win, and what stood out most to the Kamenetzkys. SEGMENT TWO: What's starting to work for Westbrook, and what's still eluding him. SEGMENT THREE: Thoughts on Melo's historic night, and how enjoyable his presence on the Lakers has been. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! That the Lakers are and will remain for a while a work in progress is a well-developed story at this point. (Hardly uninteresting, but definitely not unspoken.) What makes things interesting is the scope of that work. One of the major issues facing Frank Vogel, his triumvirate of stars and a brand new supporting cast - balance. So many potential tradeoffs when it comes to potential lineups, or tactics to maneuver through a long regular season. Among them: How can the Lakers leverage their size (not just among centers, but certainly including them) while also playing a modern game, offensively? How much defense can be sacrificed in the name of generating more points? What's the right balance when it comes to Russell Westbrook and his traditional style of play? These questions and more run throughout the episode, all enhanced by the presence of The Ringer's Seerat Sohi, one of the most unique basketball voices out there today. It's a full on engagement in the pros and cons of Westbrook, the skepticism some have about how ultimately he (and the Lakers by extension) might fare when the playoffs roll around, and the process of being in love with the process, and why it matters that Lakers veterans LOVE them some process. Plus, a deep dive into the Ben Simmons saga in Philly, and we break down some of Seerat's work writing about HBO's Succession for The Ringer. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with Guest Seerat Sohi (The Ringer) SEGMENT 1: Was Seerat on board with the Westbrook deal when it happened? How fixable are the potential shortcomings he brings personally? Conversely, how high does the ceiling get for the team if it works? SEGMENT 2: What's the right balance for the Lakers, when it comes to size? Can/should Frank Vogel sacrifice defense in the name of offense? How good is Vogel at doing that? SEGMENT 3: How the hell did the Ben Simmons thing break down so fast? How did so many smart people seem to make poor choices? Or was this inevitable? PLUS.... Some bonus talk! The Lakers disappointed in their opening night loss to the Golden State Warriors, but for some fans another disappointment came with a starting lineup that included DeAndre Jordan starting at center, as opposed to one featuring Anthony Davis at the five. It wasn't exactly a surprise, given the team's current injury woes that have thinned out the rotation and will limit coach Frank Vogel's options, but is it the start of a trend that might last the season? And if Jordan starts, does it matter that much assuming Davis plays the bulk of his minutes as a center? On Tuesday, it was over 50% of his floor time. Is that enough? Should we expect that percentage to grow over time, when Vogel has more choices at his disposal? What's the right figure? Meanwhile, the Lakers gave unexpected floor time to Avery Bradley, mostly because the team's defense was so porous along the perimeter. The CW when the Lakers signed Bradley was that his presence is likely temporary, holding down the fort until reinforcements heal up. Is the CW a little shaky? And what about Westbrook? What might get him feeling more comfortable with LeBron James and Davis going forward? A listener reacting to Tuesday's loss had an interesting proposal about Westbrook's fourth quarter playing time. Is he on the right track? Finally, the Lakers play two of the more intriguing Western Conference teams this weekend in Phoenix (Friday) and Memphis (Sunday). What makes these teams so interesting? How good could they be? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! SweatBlock Get it today for 20% off at SweatBlock.com with promo code LockedOn, or at Amazon and CVS. Here we go! The Lakers finally played a game that counts. So how did the new LeBron James/Anthony Davis/Russell Westbrook era kick off? Not so hot. On the surface, a 121-114 loss to the Warriors doesn't seem *that* terrible, but once you break down the particulars, there was a lot to be concerned about. There was the defense, which fell apart badly over the second half. There were turnovers. There was sub-50 percent shooting from the free throw line. And there was Westbrook, whose Laker debut was pretty disastrous all around. (The potential reasons for this inauspiciousness are both fascinating and, frankly, human.) To be clear, there were also some bright spots. Kent Bazemore played great defense against Steph Curry. The offense was at times quite overwhelming. And LeBron and AD looked like... well... LeBron and AD. But in all, this start marked exactly what this veteran team has promised it would be: A work very much in progress. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What went wrong during the loss... most notably, the defense. SEGMENT 2: What was more promising. Kent Bazemore's defense, and the performances from LeBron and AD. SEGMENT 3: Westbrook. What the hell happened? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! 2021-22 Season Predictions: Will LeBron James and the Lakers Win an NBA Championship?

Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

IT BEGINS TODAY! The Lakers kick off the 2021-22 NBA season, against the Golden State Warriors. So what's going to happen this year? It's time to make some big predictions. But first, a little more housekeeping as the Lakers finalized their roster. They returned another familiar face to El Segundo, claiming Avery Bradley off waivers after the veteran guard was cut by Golden State at the end of the preseason. Bradley will provide a little bit of depth as the Lakers recover from injury, and in theory at least could help bolster a backcourt short on defenders. Then again, there's no guarantee he'll be on the team in six weeks. Why did they go this direction, when help on the wings remains a much more pressing need from a roster construction perspective? Then, Frank Vogel talked about keeping LeBron James's minutes around 34 a game. Same with Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis. Is that too many? Just right? LeBron says he doesn't like sitting, and actually feels worse when he plays less. Is he... um... full of it, just trying to maximize how much he'll play? And should everyone worry more about LeBron, or Davis and Westbrook? Just because LeBron is the oldest doesn't mean he's the most fragile. From there... PREDICTIONS! It's time to answer the following.... Where will the Lakers finish in defensive efficiency? How good do they need to be? What will they shoot from 3-point territory? What's the best way to boost that number? How many times will this year will Dwight Howard foul out? How many times will he be ejected? How much small ball center will LeBron and Carmelo Anthony play, and what does that say about lineups the Lakers might try? Plus two BOLD PREDICTIONS, about injuries and the number of dimes Westbrook and LeBron will drop this season. And finally, the biggest prediction of all: Will the Lakers win an NBA title this year? If not, who is the biggest threat? It might not be the team you're thinking. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! With the regular season about 24 hours from launching, there's been a lot of talk about the Lakers' 0-6 preseason, what could be the explanation(s), and whether those goose eggs even matter. (Plus, how best to go about actually winning some games once they count.) As far as explanations go, it's worth noting the Lakers aren't just fitting together a ton of new faces. They're doing so while implementing an offense that even holdovers LeBron James and Anthony Davis don't entirely know yet. Frank Vogel described it as "intelligent movement through randomness," a very Radiohead-esque way of saying there will be a lot of motion and cutting. Does it make sense to add "learn a different way of playing" to the plate of a roster that's already lacking continuity? In the Kamenetzkys' estimation, it certainly could. As far as winning games goes, who starts will obviously play a role in success. Two slots remain in question, and the answers will come via a committee of Vogel, the front office... and the team captains. This feels like an extension of the role Davis and especially LeBron, by all accounts, play in decisions around the franchise. Is this a good idea? In the meantime, the Kamenetzkys have lobbied for Kent Bazemore in the first five, but when asked whether he's earned the spot, Bazemore gave himself a lukewarm endorsement. It's a very stark contrast to last season, when Dennis Schröder declared himself the starting point guard during his introductory presser, and indicative of the overarching selflessness (so far) of this championship-focused team. And finally, what does the 0-6 preseason really mean? ESPN NBA data guru Kevin Pelton has thoughts, and the Kamenetzkys have thoughts on his thoughts. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How will the Lakers' new offense work, and why did they decide to start something new in the first place? SEGMENT 2: The collaborative process of deciding a starting lineup (which may or may not include Bazemore). The Lakers' preseason is officially in the books after a 116-112 loss to the Sacramento Kings, the sixth loss in as many tries before the real games begin. (ALL HAIL 0-6!!!) But that last go-around wasn't entirely negative. To begin, this was arguably the best individual game each for LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook, and without question their best as a trio. For that matter, DeAndre Jordan (in by far his best showing as a Laker), Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, and Austin Reaves all enjoyed some nice moments. On balance, it was the best the Lakers have looked, period. That said, as one might expect after a loss, it also wasn't all peaches and cream, especially on the defensive end, where the Lakers remain somewhere between "inconsistent" and "a flat out mess." Plus, the health of several important players is still unknown, and the already low continuity from last year has been exacerbated. So what are the Kamenetzkys' big takeaways from the preseason, and how ready do they think the team is for the regular season to kick off next week? They discuss. Plus, praise for Reaves, and a PSA of sorts about Jordan. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: A recap of the final preseason game, and in particular, Westbrook's night and progress with the Lakers. SEGMENT 2: How ready do the Lakers seem for the season to begin? SEGMENT 3: A plea to stop complaining about Jordan every second he's on the court. Plus, can Reaves actually hang in an NBA rotation? Tuesday's preseason loss to Warriors didn't just present the first look at the Lakers' Big Three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook. It raised the question of who should start alongside that trio of All-Stars. Granted, Frank Vogel's hands are a bit tied at the moment, given all the players who are shelved with injuries. But could Kent Bazemore and Carmelo Anthony, the two filling out Tuesday's lineup, fit the bill moving forward? Bazemore feels like a lock by now, but Melo? More debatable. So the Kamenetzkys do just that. What are the pros and cons of the future Hall of Famer vs. Wayne Ellington, Kendrick Nunn or other looks? Whatever the rotation chosen, how much fun will the Lakers actually be to watch? ESPN's Zach Lowe offered up some thoughts in a recent column, and the Kamenetzkys react to his assessment. Finally, undrafted two-way player Austin Reaves has been turning heads of late with some unexpectedly un-rookie play. Is he a viable option once games actually count? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What's the best starting lineup for the Lakers, and does it include Melo? SEGMENT 2: On a pure "fun" scale, how enjoyable will the Lakers be? At long last, the Lakers' Big Three finally played a game together! Even with the caveat of it being the first non-practice run, and that half of the rotation was missing (no exaggeration), LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook playing together is by definition a "thing." As such, there were takeaways from Tuesday's loss to the Golden State Warriors at Staples Center. The Kamenetzky Brothers break down what looked good with the trio, and what was less encouraging. Plus, it was another good showing from Davis, who seems seriously determined to bounce back from a subpar season. In the meantime, there is a predictable (if silly) urge by the media to get a more concrete idea of how long it will take for this team to truly jell. But as Westbrook candidly (and honestly) acknowledged, nobody truly knows the answer, and throwing out arbitrary markers is pointless. As he also noted, the answer isn't likely "opening night," and that's legitimately fine. All the veterans from Westbrook to LeBron to Carmelo Anthony have reinforced the idea of this season as a process that requires patience, communication and the ability to speak frankly to each other. Assuming that accountability is there, everyone appears confident that the larger and smaller details will eventually work themselves out. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Thoughts on how the big three looked together, and their collective effect on the offense. The last several days have not been kind to the Lakers. They've yet to win a preseason game. Trevor Ariza is out indefinitely after ankle surgery. Malik Monk is sidelined (albeit hopefully not for long) with a groin issue. And then came Monday's news that Talen Horton Tucker will require surgery to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. It's not yet known how long the recovery will take, but it goes without saying that the Lakers will be without their emerging young player for a sizable period. Beyond the loss of THT's individual skills, the Lakers are extremely low on dudes who could conceivably (much less credibly) play small forward. It's basically now LeBron James, Kent Bazemore... and crickets. This was already a thin position on the roster, but Rob Pelinka seemed content to keep the fifteenth roster spot open, rather than add some depth, Now that feels damn near impossible to justify. Whether James Ennis, Wes Matthews or whoever, the Lakers need a live body who can credibly play 10-15 minutes at the spot. On the positive side, Tuesday's preseason game against the Warriors should finally feature the long-awaited preseason debuts of LeBron, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook as a trio. What will the Kamenetzkys be watching for as we finally see what this looks like? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What is the trickledown effect of Talen Horton-Horton out for the foreseeable future? Another day, another Lakers preseason loss. This time, it was 123-94 spanking at the hands of the Phoenix Suns, a continuation of a themes seen since training camp opened. The Lakers were shorthanded (Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker and Malik Monk are injured, while LeBron James opted not to suit up), and the play on both sides of the ball was, shall we say, erratic. And the final score reflected a general lack of cohesion. Not that there were no positives to speak of. Anthony Davis played his best game of the preseason, and seems to be rounding steadily into form, whether in terms of his offensive aggression or his defensive impact. Carmelo Anthony connected on five three-pointers. And Kent Bazemore was a quintessential "three-and-D" player (particularly the "D" part, where he was quite disruptive to Phoenix's schemes). As raggedy as the game was, those three stood out with positive contributions. On the other hand, Russell Westbrook was pretty brutal, whether as a scorer or running the offense. Only three of his twelve shots fell, and those nine missed shots were matched with nine turnovers. To be clear, a big issue appears to be timing and a lack of familiarity with so many new teammates, which is to be expected to some degree. If anything, Westbrook may have been periodically overcompensating trying to move the ball around. Still, he's been a turnover machine in two preseason appearances, and it's still not entirely clear what his role is when he's not in charge of the ball. Then again, it's not entirely clear the Lakers have been getting the most from this preseason, anyway. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Kamenetzkys begin the show with the positive elements from the loss: AD. Melo. Bazemore (who seems to have cemented his case to start). Trevor Ariza Out After Ankle Surgery, Carmelo Anthony Makes His Lakers Debut

It's felt a bit concerning that training camp has yet to include the participation of veteran forward Trevor Ariza, who'd been dealing with a sore ankle. Well, the mood just shifted from "concerning" to "alarming." The Lakers announced shortly after Wednesday's 117-105 preseason loss to the Phoenix Suns that Ariza underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure, and is expected to miss at least two months. Ariza may not be the most important member of the team, nor was he necessarily expected to play huge minutes this season. But they did anticipate the minutes Ariza played to be important ones, whether as a starter, a closer, or a bit of both. Plus, Ariza was among the few players on the roster lacking true small forwards who at least *sort of* fit the bill. As such, a thin position just grew more depleted. Where do the Lakers go from here, whether in terms of the rotation or potentially adding a player to the roster? Those questions get answered, as well as first impressions of Carmelo Anthony, following his preseason debut. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How will Trevor Ariza's absence affect the Lakers' rotation? Does it force Frank Vogel to commit to going big... or going small? SEGMENT 2: With Ariza sidelined, do the Lakers have to use their open fifteenth roster spot? SEGMENT 3: Melo finally dons a Laker uni. How did he look, and what will his role be? NBA GM Survey: Love for LeBron, Anthony Davis Snubbed... Plus, Pau Gasol retires

The Lakers got on a plane to Phoenix Tuesday for their second preseason game. This one will feature Anthony Davis and Carmelo Anthony - "the two Anthony's," as Frank Vogel called them - but not LeBron James or Russell Westbrook. And while Vogel didn't give any indication of how he's leaning when it comes to a starting lineup to open the year, he did respond to one of the big questions kicked around on Tuesday's show: Could he mix and match around the Big Three, based on matchups? In short, no. And he explained. From there, it's the annual GM survey, where the league's big execs weigh in on the most important questions surrounding players and teams heading into the 2021-22 season. What stuck out? How about some intense respect for the quality LeBron still brings at age 37, entering his 19th season. And the flip side? Davis was conspicuously absent from many categories where he appeared an offseason ago. What does it say about what's at stake for Davis this season, and what might be motivating him? Finally, Pau Gasol announced his retirement Tuesday, capping off a brilliant, Hall of Fame career. Incredible player, incredible human. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Frank Vogel says he wants consistency in his lineups, and NBA GM's pick the Nets to win it all (over the Lakers, who are the consensus runner-up). SEGMENT 2: What do the results of the GM survey say about LeBron, in year 19? What about Davis? Why isn't he given more love in these results? SEGMENT 3: Looking back at the career of Pau Gasol, and the experience of covering him while he was a Laker. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Why Getting Paid Changes Expectations and Demands on Talen Horton-Tucker

After Sunday's loss, Lakers fans registered plenty of opinions about who performed well, and who didn't. Talen Horton-Tucker, who had an uneven game for sure, saw some criticism. One comment from a viewer on the Locked On Lakers YouTube page was particularly irritated by THT's performance: "THT does NOT make his teammates better, he makes them less effective. Both Monk and Nunn are better, and both played better with THT off the floor. Sure, he made a decent play here and there, but he still plays more like a rookie than a guy making $30M," wrote "Larry G." And while it might be an overreaction to one preseason game where the team's best players basically sat out, it does drive how much more people expect out of Horton-Tucker this season. The coaches, for sure, and certainly fans. But what's a reasonable amount of improvement that can be expected? He is, after all, still only 20, and THT has still never been an everyday member of a championship level rotation. Ideally, someone like Horton-Tucker seizes a big role, maybe even a starting gig, with strong performance in training camp. But if it doesn't happen, and other guys don't quite provide the 2-way play the Lakers want, could Frank Vogel perhaps mix and match lineup combinations around the Big Three all year? Finally, the Ben Simmons saga has echoes of a moment where nobody was quite sure Kobe Bryant would show up for training camp. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The days of being fun found money for THT are over. Fair or not, he's expected to play a big role, and play it well, especially now that he's been paid handsomely. SEGMENT 2: What is a fair amount of improvement to reasonably expect from him? The new contract doesn't suddenly add three or four years of experience to his resume. Plus, could Vogel shift his starting lineup around throughout the year, based on matchups? SEGMENT 3: The Ben Simmons drama has some similarities to the days when nobody was quite sure that Kobe Bryant would show up to training camp... but some critical differences as well. What if Kobe made his trade demands in the "player empowerment" era? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Lakers-Nets Preseason Reaction: Lakers Lose, Malik Monk Shines and Dwight Howard Gets Weird

The Lakers kicked off their preseason Sunday, losing to the Brooklyn Nets )or people wearing Brooklyn Nets uniforms, at least), 123-97. Save a break-a-sweat first quarter from Anthony Davis, both teams ran without their stars, so it's hard to draw too much meaning from the result, but certain things did stick out: It was nice to see Davis back on the floor, even playing a little in a game where if he took the afternoon off nobody would have blinked. There's a lot riding on this season for Davis, and just choosing to get out on the floor and begin the process of getting back to the elite levels not reached last season is encouraging. Malik Monk (6-12, 15 points) showed some of the skills that attracted the Lakers to him, and left teammates surprised he was available at the minimum. If he provides the type of offense he did Sunday along with passable D, at the least he'll answer the question of where he fits into a crowded rotation. The answer would be decidedly "somewhere." Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn shared a backcourt. Were the different responsibilities each seemed to carry an indicator of how - and with whom- the coaching staff might deploy both? Dwight Howard is back, and to say the least, brought some Dwight Howard vibes. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose, Anthony Davis plays... did he make an impression? And what about Malik Monk? He certainly got Lakers Twitter going. SEGMENT 2: More on Monk. How could something that builds on his career performance last season impact the upside for the team? And what did we see from THT and Nunn that might be a clue for where the coaching staff is leaning in terms of responsibilities, roles and floor combinations? SEGMENT 3: Dwight Howard is back, and he's bringing that Dwight Howard vibe once again. Is that a good thing? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers have only practiced twice, and Frank Vogel is learning a radically reshuffled roster that's, as he noted, at a "continuity disadvantage" compared to other contenders. Nothing he thinks they can't overcome, obviously, but it explains why he currently has no clue who'll start alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook. He did, however, clarify that despite a well-established inclination to let defense break any ties, that won't automatically be the criteria. Instead, Vogel is leaning towards the players that provide the most optionality, with two-way skills a big plus. Who are the leading candidates? From there, Westbrook, LeBron and Vogel have talked about what they want from Davis this season, and how to get the best version of their superstar big. Davis is coming off a season below his standards, and can sometimes feel like an enigma in terms of how to summon his most aggressive, dominant self. And to be fair, it's not always easy being the perceived number two option on an elite team. It's a tricky dynamic, even for great players. (Ironically, Davis' supreme talent makes it arguably harder to figure out.) We saw this push-pull in the past for the Lakers with Pau Gasol. And, in what was ultimately a misguided quest, Lamar Odom. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How will Frank Vogel go about deciding his starting five? SEGMENT 2: How do you get the best version of Davis? SEGMENT 3: More on the dynamics of being a number two player, with looks back at the Kobe/Pau/LO era. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers' season, it is officially upon us! And we know this because the team has logged its first practice. At long last, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook shared the court doing basketball stuff. What were some of the impressions? To begin, Russ is fast. Like, really fast. Like, "Holy s----, you have no idea just how fast this dude is until you watch up close!" fast. This is very important, because Frank Vogel stated a goal of becoming the best fast break team in the NBA. (Which, despite the team's collective age, is very doable.) There was also talk about chemistry, defense, process and just having fun learning to play with each other. It felt like an excellent start to 82 games and (fingers crossed) 16 playoff wins. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky: SEGMENT 1: The Kamenetzkys talk about their impressions of this team as one that really enjoys process and work, but also understands the importance of enjoying themselves over a long season. SEGMENT 2: Vogel expressed his belief that, despite the departures of, among others, Alex Caruso, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma, the Lakers can still be a high end defense. Is this the case? SEGMENT 3: Vogel also said he wants the Lakers to run, run, run. Some will laugh at this notion, given how many elder statesmen are on the roster. Those folks are wrong. The 2021-22 season is officially off and running. Tuesday, the Lakers were the last of the NBA's 30 teams to hold their media day. It was a brisk, efficient affair, too, in which we learned a lot about the group. There was a lot of talk about Anthony Davis and where he'll play (A.D. removed the mystery quickly, saying he expects to be the center, and is comfortable with it), how Russell Westbrook fits in with his hometown squad (very well, even if it will take a minute to work out the kinks) and the impact he'll have (energy, pace). How will LeBron adjust to the group? It is his genius, after all. Or one part of it at least. And vaccination talk. Lots and lots of vaccination talk. The team will be 100% vaxxed by the opener, which is critically important, players and Frank Vogel said repeatedly, for getting the team where it wants to go. So what does it all mean? Listen and find out. Make sure to listen to Locked on Lakers five days a week! Every day, Monday through Friday. And subscribe to Locked On Lakers on YouTube for another way to access the podcast, plus reaction to breaking news. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis says he's the center. Why it matters, and why playing with Westbrook should make that transition much simpler for him, getting to enjoy some of the perks with less of the stuff he doesn't like. SEGMENT 2: How does Westbrook fit in? LeBron says Russ shouldn't change who he is as a player, and that it's up to James to make him feel comfortable. Is he right? What exactly does that mean? And why is LeBron so good at adjusting to all the different roster combinations he's seen over his career? Wayne Ellington had a great explanation. SEGMENT 3: The Lakers are fully vaxxed, and that matters for a lot more than just public health (though that matters a lot). To a man, they framed it as critical for reaching the goals they have as a group, and explain why. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! With 24 hours before the Lakers' open camp, The Athletics' Sam Amick, Shams Charania and Bill Oram joined forces to write an extremely detailed breakdown of the Lakers' offseason, and all the different variables shaping events like the Russell Westbrook trade, a massive roster shakeup, and future plans for certain players. There's a lot from this opus to chop up, so the Kamenetzkys highlighted what they found most compelling and trenchant. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: According to The Athletic's various sources, the expected plan is currently for Anthony Davis to... start at center... with Wayne Ellington and Trevor Ariza filling out as the 2 and 3 alongside LeBron James and Westbrook. As usual, Andy is gonna need to see Davis in that role full-time (more or less) to believe it, but should that prove the case, there are obviously a ton of implications. Pretty much all of which are excellent. SEGMENT 2: LeBron has long denied doubling as the defacto General Manager of his teams throughout the years, including the Lakers. Nobody has ever believed him, and according to this report, with good reason. SEGMENT 3: The report details the Westbrook trade from the Wizards' perspective, and why they were more inclined to keep the point guard than many people assumed. The Lakers are just about ready to open training camp. It's coming on Tuesday! But before it does, we take a look at a couple lingering, and extremely important, questions from last week's press conference with General Manager/VP of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka. (Along with some housekeeping news about that 14th roster spot...) First, Pelinka laid out some lofty goals for Anthony Davis this season. Nothing short of him finishing as the best two way player in the NBA, with a second championship thrown in to boot. Is that a fair expectation? Yes, given his talent and the need for him to elevate his play over last season for the Lakers to get where they want to go. Is Davis up to the task? Second, the Lakers have more players capable of contributing to the rotation than minutes available for them to do it. Pelinka spoke at length Thursday about shared sacrifice and mindset, especially among the role players. Wayne Ellington echoed those comments on a podcast last week. But all of this is easier said than done. How effectively will the group function, if guys aren't playing as much as they'd like? From there, it's a look at the roster. The Lakers, no surprise, are a top heavy group. They've been top heavy for the last couple seasons. But the gap between their best players and the supporting cast does seem wider this year than last, or even the year before. Is that a problem? It's just one question facing one of the most unique rosters the NBA has ever seen. (Something reinforced with a very fun thought experiment involving a time machine before the show is over.) HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Welcome, Austin Reaves! Plus, Rob Pelinka lays out high expectations for Anthony Davis. Is he up for it? SEGMENT 2: More AD, plus are the Lakers actually prepared to make the shared sacrifice everyone is talking about heading into camp? SEGMENT 3: Does the top heavy nature of the roster really matter? It's been a busy week around the NBA as camps are set to open next week. Nick Angstadt (Locked on Mavs, Locked on NBA) joins to break down the Lakers offseason (and this week's appearance for Dwight Howard on The Masked Singer), look at the range of possible outcomes for the Mavericks, who have seen more change in the last 10 months than the last 10 years, and figure out what happens in the Ben Simmons saga, which is potentially tied to the saga in Minnesota around their now-fired GM. So lots to talk about! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky (Guest, Nick Angstadt) SEGMENT 1: Dwight Howard is a singing octopus, a headline that would have caused Lakers fans to riot in 2012 but is just something fun to enjoy in 2021 on Howard's third tour with Los Angeles. That's a good thing. Meanwhile, is he, like most of the roster, a little too long in the tooth? Where does age matter, and where does it not? Did the Lakers get enough shooting? SEGMENT 2: The Mavs have seen a tremendous amount of change this offseason, and are a popular dark horse pick in the West. Why, though? Is it just Luka Doncic? How much better is Dallas this year compared to last? Could they push the Lakers? Angstadt delivers a scouting report. SEGMENT 3. On Thursday (kinda unexpectedly), Lakers General Manager/Vice-President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka addressed the media ahead of the following Tuesday's Media Day, and the officially opening of the season. Over twenty-ish minutes worth of questions, a lot of items were addressed, including skillsets sought during free agency, defense, the team's anticipated vaccination status, the role of Talen Horton-Tucker and much more. There will be more to chop up over the next week or so, but the Kamenetzkys wanted to immediately hit on a few points that jumped out at them. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Pelinka says the Lakers heavily prioritized ball-handling, shooting and a return to more traditional options at center while seeking out players during free agency. Or, obviously, while acquiring Russell Westbrook. What does that say about how they plan to play this year? SEGMENT 2: Pelinka says the Lakers should, by opening night, be entirely vaccinated. The Kamenetzkys discuss the implications of this happy development. Plus, the return of fans!!! SEGMENT 3: Both Pelinka and Frank Vogel (in a separate interview) have talked up Talen Horton-Tucker as a potentially big part of next season's defense.
