Coaching Staff Set: Titles, Roles, Continuity The Detroit Lions locked in their coaching staff on Monday, and the announcement landed with steadiness, not shock. Dan Campbell remains at the top. Drew Pessing is confirmed as offensive coordinator. Scotty Montgomery holds the associate head coach title. Safeties coach Jim O'Neil adds the assistant head coach role. Continuity is the headline. Caleb Collins is listed as a defensive assistant. Fraley is back as a running coordinator. Bruce Gradkowski, a former NFL quarterback, moves into the assistant wide receivers coach spot after a year as an offensive assistant. The Lions like his trajectory. Other teams do too. That momentum matters. One familiar name returns in a fresh lane. Dan Skipper is now an offensive assistant. The role is nonspecific by design. Expect Skipper to live in the film room, move between position groups, and serve as a trusted bridge between players and coaches. He just retired. He knows the locker room. That can pay off on long practice weeks. Defense: Why They're Running It Back The defensive staff remains intact aside from O'Neil's added title. That decision stirred reaction after uneven results. The context matters. Before the bye, with a healthy secondary, Detroit ranked as a top-eight defense in scoring and yards per game. The plan worked when the pieces were available. Then injuries hit. Results slid. Late in the year, Kelvin Sheppard mixed things up. Fronts changed. Coverage rules shifted. Blitz patterns evolved. The staff adjusted to the talent on hand and found gains in the final two games. That flexibility is part of why they are running it back. The defensive line is the pressure point. Kacy Rogers returns after a difficult first season. There were late signs of progress. Work with Tyleik Williams and Roy Lopez began to show. More technique wins. Better finish on plays. Year two needs to convert flashes into production. New and Notable: Passing Game and Specialist Roles David Shaw stays on as passing game specialist after previously serving as passing game coordinator. He arrived with John Morton, who is back in Denver at his old job. The shift from coordinator to specialist narrows his scope and clarifies lanes around the passing game build. Indianapolis Notes and Draft Buzz The Detroit Lions Podcast checked in from Indianapolis on a frigid morning with early draft rumors floating in the air. Most of the NFL arrives today. Brad and Dan are scheduled to speak this afternoon, with Pessing also set to meet with the media on Tuesday. February 13, 2026 - Season 16, Episode 93 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning show, Alex Kozora and I get right into discussing the Pittsburgh Steelers announcing their full coaching staff for the 2026 season on Thursday. We go over the few new names that are included in that list of staff members, and we also have conversations on the overall size of the staff and much more related to that Thursday announcement by the team. Several current and former Steelers have now chimed in on the comments made by Joey Porter Sr. about Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger during his recent interview on the Cameron Heyward podcast, so we go over the latest related to that topic. Former NFL QB Derek Carr has made it known that he is open to a comeback in 2026 should the right opportunity present itself so Alex and I address what all he had to say recently and whether the quarterback could be a plausible and possible fit with the Steelers. The NFL has reportedly now informed all 32 teams in a memo that it prevailed in its grievance vs. the NFLPA and its “team report cards" after an arbitrator determined that the NFLPA's conduct violated the CBA and ordered it to stop making public any future report cards. Alex and I both have opinions and reactions to that Friday breaking news. A judge ruled on Thursday in favor of Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss still having a year of college eligibility remaining due to a medical hardship a few years ago, so Alex and I react to that news during this show. On the heels of my first 2026 salary cap update for the Steelers being posted on Thursday, Alex and I discuss everything related to that topic. We also discuss potential March salary cap casualties related to the Steelers in addition to other ways the team might decide to create additional space should they deem that necessary during the offseason. Later in this show, Alex and I discuss the probability and plausibility related to offseason contract extensions being signed by CB Joey Porter Jr., K Chris Boswell, OLB Nick Herbig, DT Keeanu Benton, and TE Darnell Washington. While we don't yet know the exact coaching role, bringing Skipper back to the Lions' den is a savvy nod to his grit, as well as his proven leadership with the players on the offensive roster already. Skipper joins LB coach Shaun Dion Hamilton as guys who moved straight from the field into the Lions coaching staff. February 4, 2026 - Season 16, Episode 89 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning show, Alex Kozora and I get right into discussing the seemingly decline in excitement and media coverage when it comes to Super Bowl LX. While only a handful of coaching staff hires has been made official by the team as of Wednesday morning, Alex and I discuss the reports that now indicate that Brian Angelichio will likely be the team's new offensive coordinator and Domata Peko the new defensive line coach. We also address the reported news that two staff interviewees, Scott Tolzien and Chase Haslett, are reportedly staying with the New Orleans Saints. Is there some sort of prior history between QB Aaron Rodgers and new coaching staff member Frank Cignetti Jr. that could result in the former not wanting to return to Pittsburgh in 2026? We attempt to answer that question/narrative that seems to now be making the rounds since our Monday show. Former Steelers running backs coach Eddie Faulkner is reportedly joining the coaching staff of the Baltimore Ravens, so we address that news. We also talk about the seemingly strong coaching staff that new Ravens HC Jesse Minter seems to be assembling. The NFLPA held their annual Super Bowl press conference on Tuesday, so Alex and I discuss a few main talking points that came out of that media session. We talk about the probability of an 18-game regular season in the NFL and how more emphasis on better playing surfaces in stadiums is likely to happen very soon.
