In a Beaufort County courtroom just a mile from the picturesque Lowcountry waterfront where his downfall began, former prominent lawyer Alex Murdaugh received a 27-year prison sentence for a series of financial crimes that shook South Carolina. The sentencing marked a somber end to a saga that had gripped the state, leaving victims grappling with betrayal and unanswered questions.    The sentencing was a culmination of the legal proceedings that unfolded in Charleston, Columbia, Walterboro, and York, involving cases of fraud victims in Allendale, Bamberg, and Orangeburg. The charges against Murdaugh ranged from embezzlement to theft, resulting in the loss of millions for individuals who had placed their trust in him during their most vulnerable moments.    Judge Clifton Newman, addressing Murdaugh, remarked, "I don't know that you know yourself. Hopefully, something will emerge within your spirit, within your soul." Unlike his life sentences for murder, Murdaugh's prison term is non-appealable under the terms of his plea deal, ensuring he remains incarcerated until his mid-70s.    During the sentencing hearing, victims confronted Murdaugh, expressing their pain and confusion over his actions. Jordan Jinks, a childhood friend, asked, "What kind of animal are you?" Pamela Pinckney offered forgiveness but expressed her disbelief, saying, "I never thought you would do me the way you did me."    Ginger Hadwin, a former classmate, questioned how Murdaugh could steal from her nephews after her sister had helped raise his children as the family's housekeeper. Initially offering short responses, Murdaugh gradually softened and expressed gratitude for forgiveness.    He later spoke to the court, addressing his victims for nearly an hour, admitting his deception and expressing regret. He pledged to make amends in the future, acknowledging their trust in him.    However, Murdaugh's legal battles are far from over. He vehemently denies the murder charges related to his wife and younger son, and his financial crime sentence has no bearing on these convictions. He faces additional sentencing for nearly two dozen financial crimes in federal court and pending state charges related to an alleged suicide plot in 2021.    Moreover, the division of Murdaugh's known assets remains unresolved, with over a dozen people filing claims totaling at least $100 million. Negotiations are ongoing to determine where to allocate the last $1.8 million of his remaining assets.    In a rare display of remorse, Murdaugh apologized to his surviving son, Buster, for tarnishing the family name "on social media and in the media" and damaging the reputation of the century-old law firm his family had founded. He wanted to move on and make those who love him proud again.    However, it appears that Murdaugh's family has distanced themselves from him, as none of them were present in Beaufort for his sentencing.    Alex Murdaugh's fall from grace, once a scion of a prominent legal dynasty, is a stark reminder of the consequences of financial misconduct, leaving a trail of shattered trust and unanswered questions. Unlike his life sentences for murder, Murdaugh's prison term is non-appealable under the terms of his plea deal, ensuring he remains incarcerated until his mid-70s. Introduction: Host Michael Rand takes note of the QB disparity during P.J. Fleck's tenure with the Gophers. Minnesota under Fleck is 33-14 when Tanner Morgan starts at quarterback, and just 16-20 when anyone else starts. With that as a backdrop to news that starter Athan Kaliakmanis has entered the transfer portal, where do Fleck's Gophers go from here? Plus Rand gets into the Wild's win under new coach John Hynes and the Wolves' thrilling victory over Oklahoma City. 13:00: Vikings film review and poetry both revolve around the quarterback play, Kevin O'Connell's deficiencies and Brian Flores' strong work with the defense. 36:00: Will O'Connell bench Dobbs when the Vikings return from their bye? Synopsis: Each month, The Straits Times examines the ins and outs of pop culture in the Asian entertainment and Hollywood scene. Pop diva Britney Spears' memoir has been a smash hit, selling over 2.4 million copies worldwide in the first week of its release. In our previous episode (Pt 1), host Jan Lee discussed the bombshells the now 41-year-old singer dropped in the first part of her book, including the revelation that former beau, pop star Justin Timberlake, talked her into having an abortion. Continuing the discussion of the book, part two of the podcast delves into the horrifying story of Britney's mental breakdown and her eventual entry into an involuntary conservatorship. It looks at the misogyny and media scrutiny she had to endure and details how her family conspired against her and lured her into a conservatorship that stripped her of the right to make personal and financial decisions for herself. Tarlin and Mike kick things off chatting about Tarlin's recent trip to Barbados, including some turbulent flights thanks to Tropical Storm Tammy. But we quickly segue into a step challenge Tarlin is participating in, where he's determined to beat his very competitive and fit coworkers. He's even wondering if there are any tricks to game the step counters. We're open to suggestions. We then dive into the main topic - cheating scandals in sports. We discuss famous examples like Spygate with the Patriots taping opponents' signals, the Astros' trash can sign-stealing scheme, and MLB's steroid era. An interesting debate emerges around whether cheating can ever be justified if you can pay the fines and it leads to success, especially with ultra-competitive coaches like Belichick and Harbaugh. The latest cheating drama in Michigan football takes center stage next. A rogue staffer named Connor Stalions had been illegally filming opponents' sidelines for years, but the heat is now on head coach Jim Harbaugh about how much he knew. Tarlin runs through Michigan's futility against rival Ohio State during Stallions' tenure to question whether the cheating even helped. We joke about the excuses around Stalions "acting alone" when several coaches were likely involved. We consider just how high up it goes as we think through how it relates to Uber, Air BnB, and even OpenAI. We touch on connections to our current political landscape along the way. In the end, we explore how rules in sports often have to catch up to new techniques for gaining an advantage. And many innovative companies follow a similar path - they're willing to break rules early on if it means gaining market share, and they'll pay the fine down the road if needed. An interesting perspective heading into the big Michigan vs. Ohio State grudge match in The Game. Subscribe to Running It Back wherever you listen to podcasts. Now also available on Youtube.

I'm serving up plenty of sports dishes to keep your appetite satiated as Thanksgiving Week is here. Here is what's on deck: (4:08) As I wish you guys and gals a happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving (as well as making a podcast announcement), we are now well past the halfway point of the NFL season. I've come to terms as to who are the contenders (i.e. KC, PHI, DET, BAL, SF) those on the cusp (i.e. MIA, DAL) and pretenders (i.e. SEA, CIN, JAX & BUF. That's right! I said it!) of who'll make the Super Bowl in the middle of February and who will not. I'll break down some of what took place yesterday, especially the comments Steelers RB Najee Harris admitting to the press as his offense put up another stinker, which I'm sure all fans, including yours truly, share the same sentiment. Why I'm not sold on the Cleveland Browns? I'll take a peek at the Thanksgiving Day schedule, the Black Friday matchup (MIA-NYJ) and the Sunday slate as we close out the schedule for the month of November. (39:51) College football is coming down to the regular season wire. We have an interesting development where the Washington Huskies catapulted themselves into the top four, knocking down the Florida State Seminoles to number five. They suffered a huge loss as QB, Jordan Travis left the game with a leg injury that may have him sidelined for the rest of the season. Can they still get back into the Final Four when it's all said and done? I'll get into a huge weekend on the schedule, the permutations of potential craziness of certain teams losing and where they stand in the playoff mix as the regular season concludes this coming Saturday. (47:13) MLB is preparing their hot stove and they'll have plenty to cook in the coming days. The Atlanta Braves have been wheeling and dealing so far with some small trades. One of the bigger free agents is off the books as Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola stays in Philadelphia, signing a seven year, $172 million dollar contract. Is he worth that type of money? Speaking of money, a ton is going to be thrown the way of Japanese pitcher, Yoshinobu Yamamoto as negotiations can begin as early as tomorrow. Where does he end up? (52:56) The Association has been low key over the past few days. I'll discuss a few injuries (i.e. Bradley Beal, Marcus Smart) some teams playing well. (i.e. Orlando, OKC) A 180 with the Western Conference standings. (56:34) Same could be said for what's happening on the ice as it has been quiet. A star player returns to the lineup (i.e. Devils Jack Hughes), a star player may not see an extended period on the sidelines (i.e. Panthers Aleksander Barkov), a tough guy taking time away from the team because of personal issues (i.e. Bruins Milan Lucic). Besides that, I'll see where we're at in the standings and get into the latest happenings in the NHL. Here's a truth as bleak as it's unsettling: a woman from Charlotte, North Carolina, has been enduring the hard journey of long-haul COVID since 2022. However, she finds solace in the treatments prescribed by Dr. Robert Jackson, making this not just a story of struggle but one of resilience and hope. We're also fortunate to have Dr. Bose Ravenel, a Lifetime Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, join us to scrutinize the conflicting narratives around COVID-19 and shed light on the vested interests of organizations like the CDC, FDA, and NIH. Dr. Ravenel doesn't shy away from discussing the risks and penalties associated with challenging the COVID vaccine narrative.Imagine attending a symposium where a retired physician paints a bleak picture of our public health response to COVID-19 vaccinations. Chilling, right? This episode unveils the many questions raised by that presentation, especially about the survival rate of the virus among children and the efficacy of early treatment. We also delve into the contentious topic of Avamecdan, a drug that has seen decades of successful use worldwide, and could have potentially offered a solution to the COVID-19 pandemic, yet has faced strong opposition.Ever wondered about the integrity of CDC's practices? We'll discuss that and more, especially in relation to the US data on breakthrough COVID infections. Dr. Ravenel is back with us, sharing invaluable insights on the current state of the pandemic, available treatments, and potential vaccine risks. As we wrap up, we also touch upon the Jackson Family Ministry and Dr. Jackson's impactful books. Prepare for a riveting conversation that dissects the pandemic and its various narratives through a critical lens.https://www.jacksonfamilyministry.comhttps://bobslone.com/home/podcast-production/

Poor execution, costly mental mistakes and questionable coaching decisions were all part of the swirl that saw Minnesota cough up a 20-point second-half lead. 9:00: Star Tribune Wild beat writer Sarah McLellan joined Rand from Sweden, where the Wild are preparing to play a pair of games this weekend. It's an opportunity to show off their heritage for several players, but it's also an important time for the struggling Wild to turn their season around. 31:00: An English Premier League team received an unusual penalty, while a Vikings future opponent suffered a key injury.

Uncovering the war in Gaza as we are joined by national security expert, Javed Ali. With more than two decades of experience in national security and intelligence issues, he navigates us through the complex geopolitical landscape, shedding light on the US's steadfast support for Israel, the sizeable aid package in play, and the pressing need for Israel to curtail civilian casualties. We probe deeply into the stances of other key players in the fray, such as Hezbollah and Erdogan, and ponder over the question: is the US unwittingly spiraling into a larger quagmire by failing to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza? We tread further down the rabbit hole, exploring the potential aftershocks of a multi-front war between Israel and its adversaries. Javed Ali, with his vast trove of experiences, helps us understand the current turbulence in the West Bank, the strain on Israel's resources due to a two or three-front war, and the probability of escalated US involvement. The conversation harks back to the US' role in Lebanon four decades back, speculating on the possible involvement of US special operations forces in the Gaza hostage recovery and the ensuing implications. We shift gears towards the possible recoil in Israeli public opinion should the IDF suffer significant casualties. Ali and I draw parallels between the Israeli ground offensive against Hamas and other conflicts while contemplating the Geneva Convention's mandates for minimizing civilian casualties. As we reach the tail end of our discussion, the necessity for an overhaul of Israeli intelligence is considered, along with the geopolitical repercussions of sustained combat.
