On today's episode, Matt and Big Dave offer their thoughts from the Bulls preseason finale against the Memphis Grizzlies and the final roster cuts made over the weekend. Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso continued to impress on defense, but Zach LaVine is still getting caught ball-watching on the weak side. And just how bad is DeMar DeRozan's defense? Well, we got a glimpse on Friday. Still, there were plenty of positives from the game, like Nikola Vucevic's efficient scoring night and a spirited 4th quarter comeback from the second unit. The guys wrap the show with a few thoughts on Stanley Johnson getting cut and Matt Thomas appearing to make the final 15. On today's episode, Matt and Big Dave offer their biggest takeaways from the Bulls preseason debut, a clinical beatdown of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The offensive pressure is off of Zach LaVine. Lonzo Ball ran the offense beautifully. DeMar DeRozan did his thing in the midrange, and even played solid defense. Alex Caruso did it all in his 20 minutes off the bench. Shoutout Javonte Green for a heck of a performance in a surprise start. The Bulls defense may not be as bad as the "experts" feared, as they scored 26 points off of 22 Cavs turnovers. The Lakers' season, it is officially upon us! And we know this because the team has logged its first practice. At long last, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook shared the court doing basketball stuff. What were some of the impressions? To begin, Russ is fast. Like, really fast. Like, "Holy s----, you have no idea just how fast this dude is until you watch up close!" fast. This is very important, because Frank Vogel stated a goal of becoming the best fast break team in the NBA. (Which, despite the team's collective age, is very doable.) There was also talk about chemistry, defense, process and just having fun learning to play with each other. It felt like an excellent start to 82 games and (fingers crossed) 16 playoff wins. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky: SEGMENT 1: The Kamenetzkys talk about their impressions of this team as one that really enjoys process and work, but also understands the importance of enjoying themselves over a long season. SEGMENT 2: Vogel expressed his belief that, despite the departures of, among others, Alex Caruso, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma, the Lakers can still be a high end defense. Is this the case? SEGMENT 3: Vogel also said he wants the Lakers to run, run, run. Some will laugh at this notion, given how many elder statesmen are on the roster. Those folks are wrong. Frank Vogel recently said no lineup decisions have been made yet and that they're going to wait and see what comes of training camp to decide on that matter. He also made a comment that Rajon Rondo would essentially replace Jared Dudley in the locker room and not play as much this season, while also revealing that Talen Horton-Tucker (THT) has been challenged to step up and be "that guy" on the defensive end. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka also spoke to media recently and discussed how he feels the Lakers have done this offseason. After noting an absolutely crazy Laker/NBA anniversary reinforcing just how compressed the last two seasons have been... it's time to open up the mailbag!! (Reach out to the show on Twitter: @kambrothers, email: kamenetzkybrothers@gmail.com, or the iTunes show page.) The first question comes from @thenathanmark, asking whether it would be a bigger deal if Anthony Davis or Talen Horton Tucker shot 35 percent from behind the arc. Obviously, it would be great if both did, but if you could only pick one in terms of greater potential impact, it's definitely THT, because it represents growth that in turn increases his chances of logging more minutes and playing a larger role. As a player still in development, the fewer weaknesses to account for, the easier it is to keep him on the floor. Conversely, AD will have a huge role even if he misses every three taken this season. From there, the Kamenetzkys stay on THT, who barely made a blip on "best players 25 and younger" from Silver Screen and Roll and Tom Ziller. The omission is to be expected, given how unproven he remains, big potential acknowledged. How important is it for him to take a big step this season? And finally, back to the mailbag. @duckgregscott asks to predict this season's big fan favorite (aka, "the new Alex Caruso") and @MJisOVERRATED wants to know the odds of Russell Westbrook breaking Magic Johnson's franchise record for triple-doubles in a season. Now that the dust has settled on the league-shaking offseason trade in which the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Russell Westbrook, Erik and A.C. talk through every aspect of the trade and the Lakers other offseason moves including inexplicably letting Alex Caruso go for luxury tax savings. And Erik waxes poetic in a soliloquy about how Dennis Schroder's bet on himself backfired badly. 0:41 - Initial thoughts on hearing that the Lakers traded for Westbrook. 3:57 -Russell Westbrook. What does Westbrook bring to the Los Angeles Lakers? How does Westbrook fit with LeBron James? Can these two legendarily ball-dominant players work together on a court, particularly with Westbrook's lack of shooting? How can Westbrook help the Lakers when LeBron is not on the floor? And what can the sheer athleticism of Russell Westbrook do for a team that already employs LeBron and Anthony Davis? 18:18 - Identity Shift. The Lakers, who were the best defensive team in the NBA last season, have traded away much of that defense for offense. What does this shift in identity mean for the Lakers? Can a Frank Vogel team even be bad at defense? 22:13 - Kent Bazemore, Trevor Ariza, and Westbrook on Defense. What do Kent Bazemore and Trevor Ariza provide on defense? Can Westbrook be passable on defense? How can Frank Vogel scheme to take advantage of Westbrook's physical advantages and cover for some of his worst defensive tendencies? 26:20 - Defensive Sieves: Carmelo Anthony and Wayne Ellington. Erik and A.C. marvel at just how bad Melo and Ellington are at defense by virtually every advanced stat available. Will either of them get significant playing time? 34:06 - Lakers' Offensive Potential. The Lakers have added elite shooting around their new big three. How can the Lakers' take advantage of these shooters? 38:00 - Offseason Steals: Kendrick Nunn and Malik Monk. The boys discuss Rob Pelinka's double-heist of young players with upside when he got Nunn to take the mini mid-level exception and Monk to take the veteran's minimum. How will these players fit on a roster of veterans? 45:38 - Departures of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma. What will the Lakers miss with the departures of two of their core young players, both of whom played major roles in their championship? 51:57 - Lakers Get Cheap with Alex Caruso. Will the Lakers come to regret letting fan favorite Alex Caruso go for nothing in return in what appears to be purely a tax-saving move? Is it justifiable for a tax-paying team like the Lakers to care about avoiding avoiding luxury taxes in an all-in season like this upcoming one? 59:51 - Dennis Schroder's Bet Goes Bust. Erik covers how Schroder turned down a $84 million offer over four years from the Lakers only to wind up getting no offers better than a $5.9 million contract from the Boston Celtics. https://brownmenwontjump.com

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!?!?!? The Lakers kept the pedal to the metal in Tuesday's Day 2 of the free agency, making four more moves to continue (quickly) filling out what was once a nearly empty roster. First, it was the arrival of Carmelo Anthony, perhaps the easiest deal to predict in all of free agency. Next, a surprise with former Hornets guard Malik Monk, who is coming off a career year in Charlotte, but nonetheless was inconsistent, even as the 3-point shooting improved. After that, the Lakers addressed their backup point guard hole, agreeing to terms with former Heat guard Kendrick Nunn. And they capped things off by giving Talen Horton-Tucker a new deal. Busy, busy, busy! And, as it was Monday, a good use of resources, given how limited the Lakers are in the money they can throw around. The Lakers continued to bring in players who ought to outperform the contract they're getting. So how does all of this fit together? Andy Kamenetzky returns to the show after a quick vacation, and the Kamenetzky Brothers break down the incredible level of activity for LA. How much better did they get on Tuesday? How much better are they now compared to before this all kicked off? Anything else coming that could continue to change the way we think about the team? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Breaking down a busy Tuesday, starting with Carmelo Anthony and Malik Monk. What do they bring to the team? SEGMENT 2: A little more on Monk before moving on to Kendrick Nunn and Talen Horton-Tucker and holy hell has this team become a lot more interesting over the last two weeks or what? SEGMENT 3: Why THT's return is a big deal, a quick debate about Alex Caruso and why he's now gone and how much it matters, Can Kent Bazemore fill those shoes? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! We're putting the band back together! The Lakers got a little weird on Monday, as free agency started across the NBA, signing four players, all of whom have previously played for the Lakers. One of them (Dwight Howard), twice! So did Rob Pelinka have a good day? Sort of? Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore, Trevor Ariza and Howard make for a perfectly good use of veteran's minimum deals. Each offers something the Lakers could use and ought to exceed the value of the deals they signed. But the day had a cost, too. The Chicago Bulls signed Alex Caruso to a four year deal worth about 37 million. A big number for regular folks, but a completely reasonable (and easily anticipated) salary range for A.C., and according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Lakers didn't even put forth an effort keep him. Why? Luxury taxes, most likely. The Lakers are a tax paying team, and would like to keep that payroll down as much as possible, apparently. But the logic of swinging for the fences on Westbrook while simultaneously trying to save money on the supporting cast seems like a really dumb one. Nor is it the best look. Finally, answering some of your post-Day 1 mailbag questions. No Andy Kamenetzky, but Brian Kamenetzky takes a few. HOST: Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers signed four free agents, and all four make some sense, though will raise the average age of the team up a few notches. The NBA season is now officially in the books, which means it's officially time for Offseason Rumor-a-palooza, with the Lakers at the center of it all, as always! The Lakers have several players heading into free agency (most notably, Dennis Schröder, Alex Caruso and Talen Horton-Tucker), another who has the option to follow suit (Montrezl Harrell), and two players prominently in the rumor mill (Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Kyle Kuzma). They also have the 22nd pick in the draft to potentially trade. Does that mean the Lakers are set for a whirlwind of activity between now and August 2, when free agency kicks off? Not necessarily. The Lakers aren't just capped out. They also have luxury tax issues that could limit the moves that are even legal, much less optimal. As much as they might want to make changes, it won't be easy by any stretch. To better understand the Lakers' options, the Kamenetzkys talk with NBA cap expert Danny Leroux (The Athletic, Dunc'd On Podcast, RealGM Radio). How viable is a sign-and-trade involving Schröder? What are the market values for Caruso and THT? Are KCP and Kuzma reasonably valuable trade chips? Is it more likely for the team to make moves or run back a large chunk of the roster? These and many other questions get chopped up. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Danny Leroux breaks down the Lakers' cap situation, as well as the complications that make sign-and-trade deals a potentially difficult option to shake up the roster. SEGMENT 2: Are KCP and Kuzma valuable trade assets to help swing a larger deal? After some publicly stalled negotiations between Schröder and the Lakers, followed up an uneven playoffs, what's the point guard's market value? Can he leverage the Lakers' limited ability to replace him into a sizable payday? SEGMENT 3: How much competition will the Lakers face to retain Caruso and THT? Traditionally, the Lakers have been a strong option for veterans willing to take minimum deals in pursuit of a ring. Might that advantage be lessened this offseason?
