The last several days have not been kind to the Lakers. They've yet to win a preseason game. Trevor Ariza is out indefinitely after ankle surgery. Malik Monk is sidelined (albeit hopefully not for long) with a groin issue. And then came Monday's news that Talen Horton Tucker will require surgery to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. It's not yet known how long the recovery will take, but it goes without saying that the Lakers will be without their emerging young player for a sizable period. Beyond the loss of THT's individual skills, the Lakers are extremely low on dudes who could conceivably (much less credibly) play small forward. It's basically now LeBron James, Kent Bazemore... and crickets. This was already a thin position on the roster, but Rob Pelinka seemed content to keep the fifteenth roster spot open, rather than add some depth, Now that feels damn near impossible to justify. Whether James Ennis, Wes Matthews or whoever, the Lakers need a live body who can credibly play 10-15 minutes at the spot. On the positive side, Tuesday's preseason game against the Warriors should finally feature the long-awaited preseason debuts of LeBron, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook as a trio. What will the Kamenetzkys be watching for as we finally see what this looks like? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What is the trickledown effect of Talen Horton-Horton out for the foreseeable future? SEGMENT 2: More on THT's injury, plus the need to find another legit small forward option. SEGMENT 3: What to watch for when LeBron, AD and Russ take the floor together. The Lakers are just about ready to open training camp. It's coming on Tuesday! But before it does, we take a look at a couple lingering, and extremely important, questions from last week's press conference with General Manager/VP of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka. (Along with some housekeeping news about that 14th roster spot...) First, Pelinka laid out some lofty goals for Anthony Davis this season. Nothing short of him finishing as the best two way player in the NBA, with a second championship thrown in to boot. Is that a fair expectation? Yes, given his talent and the need for him to elevate his play over last season for the Lakers to get where they want to go. Is Davis up to the task? Second, the Lakers have more players capable of contributing to the rotation than minutes available for them to do it. Pelinka spoke at length Thursday about shared sacrifice and mindset, especially among the role players. Wayne Ellington echoed those comments on a podcast last week. But all of this is easier said than done. How effectively will the group function, if guys aren't playing as much as they'd like? From there, it's a look at the roster. The Lakers, no surprise, are a top heavy group. They've been top heavy for the last couple seasons. But the gap between their best players and the supporting cast does seem wider this year than last, or even the year before. Is that a problem? It's just one question facing one of the most unique rosters the NBA has ever seen. (Something reinforced with a very fun thought experiment involving a time machine before the show is over.) HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Welcome, Austin Reaves! Plus, Rob Pelinka lays out high expectations for Anthony Davis. Is he up for it? SEGMENT 2: More AD, plus are the Lakers actually prepared to make the shared sacrifice everyone is talking about heading into camp? SEGMENT 3: Does the top heavy nature of the roster really matter? Frank Vogel recently said no lineup decisions have been made yet and that they're going to wait and see what comes of training camp to decide on that matter. He also made a comment that Rajon Rondo would essentially replace Jared Dudley in the locker room and not play as much this season, while also revealing that Talen Horton-Tucker (THT) has been challenged to step up and be "that guy" on the defensive end. Lakers GM Rob Pelinka also spoke to media recently and discussed how he feels the Lakers have done this offseason. On Thursday (kinda unexpectedly), Lakers General Manager/Vice-President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka addressed the media ahead of the following Tuesday's Media Day, and the officially opening of the season. Over twenty-ish minutes worth of questions, a lot of items were addressed, including skillsets sought during free agency, defense, the team's anticipated vaccination status, the role of Talen Horton-Tucker and much more. There will be more to chop up over the next week or so, but the Kamenetzkys wanted to immediately hit on a few points that jumped out at them. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Pelinka says the Lakers heavily prioritized ball-handling, shooting and a return to more traditional options at center while seeking out players during free agency. Or, obviously, while acquiring Russell Westbrook. What does that say about how they plan to play this year? SEGMENT 2: Pelinka says the Lakers should, by opening night, be entirely vaccinated. The Kamenetzkys discuss the implications of this happy development. Plus, the return of fans!!! SEGMENT 3: Both Pelinka and Frank Vogel (in a separate interview) have talked up Talen Horton-Tucker as a potentially big part of next season's defense. Considering he's thus far been a liability, this would be a very important step. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! New center DeAndre Jordan has been a polarizing acquisition among Lakers fans and media. To some, he's seen as a continuation of what worked during the 2020 championship season, where the Lakers overwhelmed opponents with size, rebounding and paint points, playing two traditional centers alongside Anthony Davis. To others, he's a washed retread "name" that exacerbates the Lakers' spacing issues, prevents Davis from playing the proper amount at the five, and poorly replaced Marc Gasol. That he's coming off a DNP-TheEntirePlayoffs for Brooklyn doesn't help matters. Plus, the Nets didn't want him, and they're now viewed as the Lakers' chief rival and inevitable Finals opponent. So what's the appeal to Rob Pelinka? To find out more, the Kamenetzkys talked with Doug Norrie, who covers Brooklyn's squad as the co-host of Locked on Nets. How did Jordan actually play last season? How much does he still have in the tank? How much utility can he still offer a team? Does he make sense for the Lakers? And does Norrie picture the championship clash that everyone wants to see? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What happened with Jordan over the course of two seasons in Brooklyn to explain his dwindling playing time and eventual exit? Doug Norrie offers his take. SEGMENT 2: More from Norrie about Jordan's effectiveness on both sides of the ball. Does he have a role with the Lakers? Now that the dust has settled on the league-shaking offseason trade in which the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Russell Westbrook, Erik and A.C. talk through every aspect of the trade and the Lakers other offseason moves including inexplicably letting Alex Caruso go for luxury tax savings. And Erik waxes poetic in a soliloquy about how Dennis Schroder's bet on himself backfired badly. 0:41 - Initial thoughts on hearing that the Lakers traded for Westbrook. 3:57 -Russell Westbrook. What does Westbrook bring to the Los Angeles Lakers? How does Westbrook fit with LeBron James? Can these two legendarily ball-dominant players work together on a court, particularly with Westbrook's lack of shooting? How can Westbrook help the Lakers when LeBron is not on the floor? And what can the sheer athleticism of Russell Westbrook do for a team that already employs LeBron and Anthony Davis? 18:18 - Identity Shift. The Lakers, who were the best defensive team in the NBA last season, have traded away much of that defense for offense. What does this shift in identity mean for the Lakers? Can a Frank Vogel team even be bad at defense? 22:13 - Kent Bazemore, Trevor Ariza, and Westbrook on Defense. What do Kent Bazemore and Trevor Ariza provide on defense? Can Westbrook be passable on defense? How can Frank Vogel scheme to take advantage of Westbrook's physical advantages and cover for some of his worst defensive tendencies? 26:20 - Defensive Sieves: Carmelo Anthony and Wayne Ellington. Erik and A.C. marvel at just how bad Melo and Ellington are at defense by virtually every advanced stat available. Will either of them get significant playing time? 34:06 - Lakers' Offensive Potential. The Lakers have added elite shooting around their new big three. How can the Lakers' take advantage of these shooters? 38:00 - Offseason Steals: Kendrick Nunn and Malik Monk. The boys discuss Rob Pelinka's double-heist of young players with upside when he got Nunn to take the mini mid-level exception and Monk to take the veteran's minimum. How will these players fit on a roster of veterans? 45:38 - Departures of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma. What will the Lakers miss with the departures of two of their core young players, both of whom played major roles in their championship? 51:57 - Lakers Get Cheap with Alex Caruso. Will the Lakers come to regret letting fan favorite Alex Caruso go for nothing in return in what appears to be purely a tax-saving move? Is it justifiable for a tax-paying team like the Lakers to care about avoiding avoiding luxury taxes in an all-in season like this upcoming one? 59:51 - Dennis Schroder's Bet Goes Bust. Erik covers how Schroder turned down a $84 million offer over four years from the Lakers only to wind up getting no offers better than a $5.9 million contract from the Boston Celtics. https://brownmenwontjump.com

Few topics generate more controversy among NBA players than their 2K rating, so it's no shock that Wednesday's release of the new NBA 2K22 numbers had a bunch of ballers up in arms. Even as high a rating as 96 (out of 100) feels like a slight if you're LeBron James. On the plus side, it also made him the #1 ranked player, just edging out fellow 96-ers Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokoumnpo and Steph Curry! Oh, the grudges that will be launched (and relaunched)! In the meantime, feels like a weird thing to say, but LeBron remaining the best in a video game heading into year 19 is a pretty amazing achievement, even if he'd take issue with the metrics creating the score. Speaking of formats, Lakers owner Jeanie Buss revealed in an interview with The Athletic that she's not a fan of the play-in tournament, both because she doesn't think it's fair to seven and eight seeds who could lose a postseason berth, but also because she doesn't think it's an effective (or at least appropriate tanking deterrent). What's most interesting about her opinion isn't so much whether it's right or wrong, but how much it reveals the worldview of an owner of an organization like the Lakers. And finally, a mailbag question from @thenathanmark. (In addition to twitter - @kambrothers - listeners can ask questions by emailing kamenetzkybrothers@gmail.com or on the iTunes showpage.) Assuming the Lakers finish the season as the number one seed, will they finally get some awards season love, particularly for Rob Pelinka and Frank Vogel? The Kamenetzkys strongly disagree on their chances. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Is 96 out of 100 a good score? Yes... unless you're LeBron or another All-NBA caliber player and it's a 2K score, in which case it's an insult. SEGMENT 2: Jeanie hates the play-in tournament. Does she have a point? We're putting the band back together! The Lakers got a little weird on Monday, as free agency started across the NBA, signing four players, all of whom have previously played for the Lakers. One of them (Dwight Howard), twice! So did Rob Pelinka have a good day? Sort of? Wayne Ellington, Kent Bazemore, Trevor Ariza and Howard make for a perfectly good use of veteran's minimum deals. Each offers something the Lakers could use and ought to exceed the value of the deals they signed. But the day had a cost, too. The Chicago Bulls signed Alex Caruso to a four year deal worth about 37 million. A big number for regular folks, but a completely reasonable (and easily anticipated) salary range for A.C., and according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Lakers didn't even put forth an effort keep him. Why? Luxury taxes, most likely. The Lakers are a tax paying team, and would like to keep that payroll down as much as possible, apparently. But the logic of swinging for the fences on Westbrook while simultaneously trying to save money on the supporting cast seems like a really dumb one. Nor is it the best look. Finally, answering some of your post-Day 1 mailbag questions. No Andy Kamenetzky, but Brian Kamenetzky takes a few. HOST: Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers signed four free agents, and all four make some sense, though will raise the average age of the team up a few notches. SEGMENT 2: Why losing Caruso is painful for the Lakers. SEGMENT 3: A little more AC, plus the mailbag! Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Free Agency Begins: How Will The Lakers Fill Out the Team Around LeBron, Davis and Westbrook?

Everyone's had the weekend to think things over, and the Russell Westbrook trade has only grown more interesting.. The process of moving forward, filling out the team around the new Big Three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Westbrook begins today as free agency opens. Where do the Lakers get the rest of their pieces? Who are the most likely candidates to join the the purple and gold to chase a title? Certain players - Carmelo Anthony, for example - feel almost inevitable and would make some sense, but the competition for talent around the league will be fierce. The Lakers aren't the only squad that can offer an opportunity to go win a ring. So what happens at 3:01 pm PT, when the derby officially begins? Is DeMar DeRozan really an option, given the haircut he'd have to take? What about Rudy Gay, or some lesser-but-critical names? Could Otto Porter be had for the taxpayer midlevel? Would he be a good choice, given his injury history? But first, much of the analysis around the trade has centered around questions of ego. Can everyone sacrifice to the extent that's needed in order to make this work? Is this going to be a real problem? But just as importantly, let's say Westbrook is willing to shave off parts of his game to blend better with Davis and LeBron. What does that look like? Does that shrink his impact? How do the Lakers maximize the real positives Westbrook can bring while minimizing the negatives? This is going to be a fascinating season, and we're just starting. SUBSCRIBE TO LOCKED ON LAKERS ON YOUTUBE FOR INSTANT UPDATES ON FREE AGENCY. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What role will egos play in the melding of LA's new Big Three? Any reason to worry? SEGMENT 2: More questions the trade raises, and a look at Free Agency. How high can the Lakers realistically aim? How tricky is the task ahead of Rob Pelinka? SEGMENT 3: More names to watch as free agency begins. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Another Kuzma trade rumor! Lakers moving up in the Draft? Plus, Lionel Hollins out!

Another day, another trade rumor involving the Lakers and Kyle Kuzma. This time, he was reportedly offered, along with the 22nd pick, to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for T.J. Warren and the 13th pick. If that sounds lopsided in favor of the Lakers, that's only because it is. Like, a lot. But what's even more curious is the Lakers' reported attempt to move up in a draft. Could the Lakers have a specific player in mind (Chris Duarte?), or another plan altogether? In the meantime, there's change a-foot among the coaching staff. The venerable Lionel Hollins and the Lakers have parted ways after an impasse during contract negotiations. Reportedly, Hollins will be replaced internally by a promoted Mike Penberthy, heretofore largely known for his work as a shooting coach with the Lakers. (Take that info as you will.) If nobody else is brought on from the outside, should eyebrows be raised. Plus, the Kamenetzkys reminisce about their days as published authors. Have you picked up a copy of "Fishing on the Edge?" It apparently still sells copies. Seriously. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Pacers reportedly (and reasonably) turned down a trade offer involving Kuzma and the 22nd pick. What can be read into this attempt by Rob Pelinka? SEGMENT 2: More on what the Lakers could be up to in the draft, where it's been suggested they're trying to do everything from move higher in the first, or out of it entirely. SEGMENT 3: Hollins out. Penberthy promoted. Significant development? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Lakers have a bunch of free agents this offseason, and if we're being honest, not all of them need to be a priority. There are some players, though, who are critical to the team's success, and making sure they're in purple and gold next year should be a major priority: Talen Horton-Tucker Alex Caruso Dennis Schroder We break down why each is important to re-sign, and who would be the top priority if Rob Pelinka has to make some tough choices. Critics of Dennis Schröder may not like some of the arguments. From there, we dive into Horton-Tucker's sophomore campaign. While his growth was significant in his second season, is he ready to be an every day rotation guy, playing heavy minutes including in high-leverage playoff situations? What is his significance to the franchise, long term? Also, you'll learn some old-timey train lingo. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Who are the most important free agents the Lakers have from last year's roster? SEGMENT 2: Dennis Schroder reportedly wants "der tasche," or "the bag." Do the Lakers have to give it to him? What happens if they don't? SEGMENT 3: Why THT has the more transformative potential for the Lakers than anyone else on the roster. The Lakers beat the Golden State Warriors on Monday night, and we’re ready to break it down. On the latest episode of “Lakers, Explained” — a podcast by Silver Screen and Roll — co-hosts Harrison Faigen and Anthony Irwin dove into the game. First, both hosts wanted to apologize to Montrezl Harrell for underrating what he brings at times. He showed his value against the Warriors, and has made progress on defense lately. Then they praised Kyle Kuzma after the latest sign of his own improvements against Golden State. How much juice those two are giving the Lakers right now cannot be overstated. After all that, in the second half of the show, Harrison and Anthony got into why the Lakers making a trade for P.J. Tucker — they’re rumored to still be talking to the Rockets — work is a lot less likely than them adding him in the buyout market because of how complicated a deal would be. Plus, is such a deal even a good idea? Harrison broke down all the crazy level of machinations that would be required to make a trade that isn’t 1-for-1 work to outline how hard it would be for Rob Pelinka and the front office to get it done. And that goes for Tucker, or any of their other rumored targets. Finally, the two wrapped up the show by getting you ready for the second night of the back-to-back against an awful Minnesota Timberwolves by trying to get Anthony to name their coach and starting lineup. He did better than Charles Barkley does in “Who He Play For?”, but only marginally so. You can follow Harrison on Twitter at @hmfaigen, and Anthony @AnthonyIrwinLA. Learn more about your ad choices.
