Darvin Ham and LeBron James Agree, Anthony Davis Should be the Focal Point on Offense

The Lakers braintrust met recently and covered a lot of ground, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports. Interestingly enough, a contract extension for LeBron James wasn't really the frontburner item. Instead, Rob Pelinka, Darvin Ham and James tried to lay out a vision for the season, and gain a common understanding of what's coming. And there was a lot discussed over an hour or so. Anthony Davis is going to be the focal point of the offense. Things will run through him, everyone agrees. So what does that mean? How will that impact LeBron's ability not just to stay healthy, but give a little more to the defensive side of things than he did last year? Haynes reports that Pelinka plans to be patient with the roster, and everyone agreed to see how things shake out before making any big moves. That's code for "Russell Westbrook is going to be here." (That's a message not just for the players, but for the fans, just as a heads up.) So if that's the case, what are they going to do with him? First, all that accountability, selflessness and sacrifice talk seems geared towards him, at least to some degree. (Even things that aren't code for Westbrook specifically are highly, highly relevant regarding him.) And then, they hope to maximize his three point shooting by moving as much of it to the corner as possible - he's great from the left corner! - and (hopefully) eliminating it from everywhere else. Of course, if he can't improve his efficiency at the rim, it doesn't really matter if he hits a few more corner three's... but that's a different story. So how likely is it all of this will work? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The braintrust has met, and first things first, Russell Westbrook seems awfully likely to be around in the fall. SEGMENT 2: Do the Lakers have a plan to make Westbrook a little more efficient? SEGMENT 3: Anthony Davis will be the focal point of the offense. What exactly does that mean? On today's episode with Rob G (Robert Guerra) sitting in for Jason, the Super Producer kicks things off with a deep dive into the reports that LeBron James met with Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and head coach Darvin Ham. LeBron and the Lakers brass seem to be in lock-step on a number of issues heading into next season, specifically as it relates to player accountability, adjusted roles and the belief that the offense should run through Anthony Davis. All of this sounds well and good... until you realize that it's almost impossible to execute this four-pronged plan while Russell Westbrook is on the roster. Pelinka and Ham have maintained publicly all offseason that they have no issue running it back with Russ next season, but it's clear now that they've been lying this entire time. Finally, Rob G closes the show with Day 3 of Fan Mail: Which NFL wide receiver will be a fantasy bust this season? Should Shohei Ohtani win American League MVP again? Why does he hate Tom Brady? Who is the most iconic Los Angeles broadcaster: Vin Scully or Chick Hearn? Some of these answers are spicy! Today's word of the day is ‘appeal' as in I had the entire Deshaun Watson situation wrong as in Deshaun Watson has been suspended for 6 games, but the NFL has said NOPE! What is going on here? Why would Roger Goodell even use an outside arbitrator if it even ends up back on Roger Goodell's lap? The NFL has appealed the decision and now Watson could be suspended for however long the NFL wants him to be. (12:35) Brittney Griner was sentenced to 9 and a half years in a Russian court yesterday. Let's talk about this case. The U.S. government has been involved and it seems like nothing is being done. Topic: LeBron James Laughs at Your ‘Old' Lakers Memes. After His Nap.   LeBron James has seen the memes and read the punch lines. 詹姆斯看過那些迷因且讀了笑哏。 “The narrative about our age,” he said, “I kind of laugh at it. I actually do really laugh. I'm not just saying that.” 「這些內容都在嘴我們的年齡」,他說,「我有點發噱。事實上我真的有笑,我不是說說而已。」 The Los Angeles Lakers are old. They are the NBA's Traveling Wilburys, an aging rock star collective hoping to produce one more chart-topping album. Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan have more mileage between them than a 2003 Honda Civic. Carmelo Anthony, 37, recalled first getting to know James, 36, when they were high school standouts — way back in the previous millennium. At 32, Russell Westbrook is comparatively spry. “I don't think it's going to be like peanut butter and jelly to start the season,” James told reporters ahead of training camp. “But that's all part of the process.” 「我不認為開季會一帆風順。」詹姆斯在訓練營開始前告訴記者,「不過這都是過程的一部分。」   In his own small way, James reinvented himself, too, by slightly slimming down at this august stage of his career. 詹姆斯也以他的小方法改造自己,在他職業生涯年高德劭的階段瘦一點。 “He's made the decision to come back a little bit leaner,” Rob Pelinka, the team's general manager, said. “And I think that's going to translate in his explosiveness and his quickness.” 「他決定以苗條一點點的狀態回來」,湖人隊總經理佩林卡說,「我認為這將轉化在他的爆發力和速度上面」。 Westbrook, a former league MVP, spent last season with the Washington Wizards before he was traded to the Lakers in August. Westbrook called it a “blessing” to be playing in Los Angeles, where he grew up. 得過最有價值球員的衛斯布魯克,上個球季為華盛頓巫師隊效力,今年8月被交易至湖人。衛斯布魯克說,能在他長大的洛杉磯打球是種「賜福」。 “I think it's because we both understand and know what it takes in order to win, and obviously LeBron knows what it takes to get to that next level,” Westbrook said. 「我認為,因為我們兩個都知道並了解贏球需要什麼,顯然詹姆斯也清楚更上一層樓需要什麼。」衛斯布魯克說。 But the aging process is undefeated, and there are obvious concerns about the Lakers' durability. James, so indestructible for much of his career, has been hampered by injuries in recent years, and Davis limped through the team's abridged playoff appearance last season. For his part, Pelinka sought to downplay the suggestion that the Lakers were brittle by citing the example of Tom Brady, who, at 44, is still quarterbacking football teams to Super Bowls. Amid the doubts and the questions about the Lakers, Anthony can make out a path that leads to a championship ring, which would be his first. There were moments in his career, he said, when he considered the possibility of teaming up with James, one of his closest friends. The opportunity never materialized. Perhaps neither player was ready for that to happen, Anthony said. “But here we are now,” he said. “Timing is everything.” 「不過我們現在是隊友了。」他說,「時機比什麼都重要」。Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/5820559   Next Article   Topic: Tom Daley knits away in between dives at Tokyo Olympics   Tom Daley's way of relaxing between dives off the 10-meter tower at the Olympics keeps him in stitches. Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has made no secret throughout his career of his admiration, even idolization, of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. It's a topic that has come up a lot during the playoffs, and Boston's run to the Finals, given gestures like Tatum wearing a "24" wristband in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. It's put some Lakers fans in a weird position, one where they're actually pulling for a Celtic, and even the Celtics, in the Finals against Golden State. Is that against the rules? What are the rules, anyway? The Lakers are already on to the business of building out next season's roster. It's a given they'll have a lot of slots to fill via free agency, and not a lot money to do it. So journeymen like Langston Galloway, Kyle Guy, Alize Johnson, and D.J. Wilson —all of whom were in El Segundo this week—represent the kind of player to which the Lakers will have access. Finding the right combination of limited players that can be put in the best position to succeed while also fitting in with the team's stars (if necessary) won't be easy. But that's the challenge. On Monday, Darvin Ham was introduced to the LA media as head coach. On Tuesday, he began shaping his staff. Most notable were the names of the guys from last year's staff he let go - David Fizdale, Mike Penberthy, John Lucas III - and one of the two guys he kept. Phil Handy is widely considered among the best assistant coaching in the NBA, a guy many believe should be getting more shine for head jobs. Handy, who worked with Ham on Mike Brown's Lakers staff a decade ago and has a deep relationship with LeBron James, isn't going anywhere. He, along with Quinton Crawford, will be part of next year's group as well. It's another piece of good news, and an indication that Ham will be able to make a strong pitch to those coaches he wants to see join his staff, including some who might be under contract in other cities. How much does it matter that he find a guy with head coaching experience? What about the other things Ham emphasized? Like defense? Accountability? Sacrifice? Particularly on the defensive side of things, is he capable of delivering if Rob Pelinka doesn't deliver a better roster? Finally, Pelinka says the Lakers lacked toughness last year, and it's hard to argue. But why? How much of that was on Vogel, and how much can be addressed by changing coaches? Darvin Ham Will Be Introduced as Lakers Head Coach on Monday. What Do You Want to Hear?

Three-plus years ago, the Lakers introduced Frank Vogel as head coach in a press conference where he was an afterthought, thanks to a missed postseason, Magic Johnson's abrupt departure, Luke Walton's firing, coaching search shenanigans, and more. Later today (Monday), Darvin Ham will be introduced to replace Vogel, and while the team is hardly in a perfect place, there should be at least less overall angst. That should help make the day one of greater optimism, where Ham will have the opportunity to really make an impression on the city and his future players. What should Lakers fans want to hear from Ham? What are the most interesting questions that could be asked in order to get a feel for who he might become as head coach. And once everyone is done with Darvin, what questions are there for Rob Pelinka, who still hasn't spent a ton of time addressing Lakers media (and by extension, Lakers fans)? Of course, Ham's success will depend a lot on the roster he's given. There is still a ton of mystery in that regard, given how many holes the team has to fill. One player (presumably) returning next season is Austin Reaves. He was a great surprise this year, but was also the beneficiary of low expectations and being a bright spot amidst a raging tire fire surrounding him. What can the Lakers expect from Reaves? Is he a starter? A high class reserve? Someone who, on a more successful team, might not be worthy of as much playing time? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Monday's press conference introducing Darvin Ham will look a lot different than the one introducing Frank Vogel, and that's a very good thing for the Lakers. SEGMENT 2: What would you ask Ham? What would you want to hear in response? SEGMENT 3: Evaluating Austin Reaves. How does he fit into the rotation next season? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Lakers made big news heading into the weekend, landing on Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham to be their next head coach. The news was met with praise from Lakers Nation, the media and NBA players and execs alike, which is a great testament to the level of respect Ham has across the league. He seems to possess the qualities the Lakers need - communication skills, versatility, a good command of x's and o's, etc. - while bringing the potential for upside as he develops. The Lakers decided this stuff matters more than a previous run or two as a head man. Good for them. Even better, the Lakers seem to have addressed the shortcomings of the Frank Vogel Era. Ham will reportedly be allowed to choose his own staff, and won't have Kurt Rambis sitting in on coaching meetings. Plus he's reportedly getting four years, guaranteed! Letting the coach do his job without meddling seems obvious, but hasn't been standard practice for the last few seasons. Whether the Lakers are afraid of bad press or have truly learned their lesson, they're addressing the issue. That's helpful. Ham's versatility matters, too, in case the Lakers feel they need to move on from Rob Pelinka next offseason. He's a guy the next GM would likely feel confident working with. That's important, because hiring Ham was the easiest thing Pelinka has to do this summer. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The good news about Ham. Why people across the league like and respect him. SEGMENT 2: Have the Lakers learned their lesson when it comes to meddling with their coaches? Friday's show was all about why the Lakers should hire Darvin Ham, and someone must be listening. Friday evening, news broke that the Lakers have agreed to a four year contract with the former role player and long time NBA assistant to be their next head coach. The news was met with excitement from LeBron James, who tweeted out his support. Similar messages will undoubtedly be coming through the holiday weekend. It's a good move for the Lakers, who had an efficient, well run process leading them to a solid result. They learned some lessons, apparently, by giving Ham a fourth year, and while no dollar figures are yet available, it seems unlikely LA skimped there, either. Ham will now fill out his coaching staff, which shouldn't be hard given the respect he garners, and then Rob Pelinka will need to give Ham a team that can win games. That's a much tougher task. But for now, it's good news, Lakers fans! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Why Darvin Ham Should Coach the Lakers, and Is a Kyrie Irving/Russell Westbrook Trade Worth the Risk?

The Lakers are down to Terry Stotts, Kenny Atkinson and Darvin Ham. One will be the next head coach. So after a series of scouting reports breaking down each guy, who ought to be the hire? The answer is Ham, but why? And what about the other guys? Would either constitute a real mistake? Meanwhile, if Rob Pelinka can't do serious work improving the roster, does it even matter who coaches the Lakers next season? Speaking of new talent, the relationship between, um, "mercurial" point guard Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets has soured, with the Nets reportedly unwilling to give Irving the long-term extension everyone expected. (Not surprising, given how the last couple seasons have gone.) If he leaves Brooklyn, the oddsmakers think the Lakers are a relatively probable landing spot. Is this a good idea? How deep into the Kyrie Irving Business should the Lakers get, even if it means getting rid of Russell Westbrook? Might it be time for some unconventional thinking to get the most from an unconventional guy? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: On Terry Stotts and Kenny Atkinson. Not the best choice, but are they bad choices? SEGMENT 2: Darvin Ham, and why he's the best candidate for the job. SEGMENT 3: Kyrie Irving... the Laker? Would you? Under what circumstances? After news that Phil Jackson was advising the Lakers on who to hire as the team's next head coach was a topic of conversation, reports that some people connected to the team might not be happy about it. Is it LeBron James/Rich Paul, who have clashed with Jackson before? Rob Pelinka? Agents? Other players? Why is it problematic that the Lakers seem to have so many important voices who aren't on the payroll? And oh, by the way, Jackson is reportedly a big Russell Westbrook fan. Might his involvement increase the chances Westbrook returns? Because Lakers fans should understand there's a very real possibility Westbrook could return next season. The Lakers might find it hard to move him in a deal that doesn't hurt them, first and foremost, and if he's back it makes sense (or could) to try and make things work on the court before just paying him to go away. Westbrook might have a vested interest in playing and restoring some of his rep, and the Lakers could perhaps use the talent. Not saying it will happen—ideally, it seems both parties would prefer a quick divorce—just that everyone (Lakers included) needs to prepare for a different outcome. Finally, Sam Amick of The Athletic reports the Lakers are ok with the idea of going year to year with LeBron, should he choose not to sign an extension this summer. How might this arrangement benefit both sides? It could, but requires everyone to understand the arrangement very clearly. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Who might be upset that Phil Jackson has a hand in the coaching search? And why? SEGMENT 2: Why Russell Westbrook could return to the team next season. Is Darvin Ham a Good Candidate for the Lakers Coach? Mark Jackson? Who Else? (Guest: Kevin Arnovitz)

Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

On Monday's episode, ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz broke down the bind the Lakers (with LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook), and other "mercenary" style NBA teams like the Clippers and Nets face when building a roster that tries not only to have talent but cohesion and culture. The second half of the show focuses on their coaching vacancy, which is seemingly thought of by Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss as too big for a first-timer like, say, former Lakers/current Bucks assistant Darvin Ham? Well, according to Arnovitz, not so much. He points to Ham as a blindingly obvious candidate for the Lakers to interview (which he actually said before news broke into the weekend that the Lakers will, in fact, talk with him). Are there other assistants out there the Lakers should be paying attention to? What about among the "retreads?" All of this points to big questions about the process we're about to see play out. There are no slam dunk obvious candidates. There are many the Lakers could probably find success with, if that coach is given the right tools, the right roster, and a culture that makes sense. Will that happen? Are the Lakers more concerned about winning the press conference? Keeping control in the basketball ops department by choosing assistants and having Kurt Rambis sit in on coaches meeting We're about to find out. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky (Guest: Kevin Arnovitz) SEGMENT 1: The narrative is the Lakers aren't a "starter job." It's one belied by their history. Will the Lakers limit themselves, though? SEGMENT 2: All about Darvin Ham! SEGMENT 3: What kind of process will the Lakers take in their coaching search? Who gets on the list and why? More importantly, who doesn't get on the list, and why? The show - which covers issues ranging from LeBron James' future in Los Angeles to Rob Pelinka's difficult upcoming offseason to the Lakers' 2020 championship's place among other purple and gold titles to Anthony Davis' health to Russell Westbrook -is mostly centered around a comment left by Socrates Thalassos on the Locked On Lakers YouTube page: "Lakers future looks very bleak. Aging LBJ. Always Damaged Aggression Deficient. No draft picks-expect them to trade 27 and 29 to help with next year and to get off Russ. A passive aggressive drama fuels the next 3 years of LBJ, since I think he probably will sign the extension because he wants to stay in LA, not because he wants to stay with the Lakers. After that a totally empty cupboard with maybe Austin Reaves, Wenyen Gabriel and some undrafted projects in it. If we're lucky they'll be as much fun as the Baby Lakers were. Next title maybe 2035 if they're lucky. More likely 2040. But hey a bubble championship in 2020!... Or blow it up, trade AD and LBJ for as much as you can get, let Russ play out his contract without spending assets to get rid of him and jump start the whole process. With any luck, in 3 to 5 years you're a contender again." That led to all sorts of discussion. It starts with a quick review of the way the roster performed - or didn't, more precisely - as logged by The Athletic's Jovan Buha in his Lakers Report Card. The point wasn't to parse the grades, but note how badly the Lakers missed on most of what they did, which explains the pessimism of Socrates. From there, it's LeBron talk. What happens if he's committed to Los Angeles and to staying here, even if he doesn't believe the Lakers will be able to deliver another title? Could the Lakers sell him, and the fans, on a vision that doesn't have them talking title in October? And finally, Socrates' comment about the bubble title prompted a Twitter inquiry that got A TON of response. How connected are Lakers fans to the 2020 title? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers get grades. What do they reveal about the roster? SEGMENT 2: How much do LeBron's priorities matter if his on-court output looks like it typically does? Could management sell fans on something short of high end title contention next year? The Lakers have a tremendous amount of stuff to figure out this offseason - what to do with Russell Westbrook, what coach to replace Frank Vogel with, are LeBron James and Anthony Davis still a championship foundation, etc. - and a lot of it depends on developing a sense of self-awareness around where stuff went wrong. Until that happens, Jeanie Buss Rob Pelinka, Kurt/Linda Rambis and everyone else making decisions will likely flail about. Maybe they get it right. But then again, maybe they don't. Joining the show to discuss it all is Dan Woike, Lakers beat writer at the LA Times. We start with more insight into The Russ Experience. Woike seemed to get along, relatively speaking, with Westbrook through the season. Is that actually the case? What was it like to cover him, and why did everything go wrong? Clearly, he says, this was bad casting. Wrong dude for the wrong role he'd be expected to play. From there, it's a look at Rob Pelinka, the front office, and the idea of accountability. A day after OKC GM Sam Presti spoke for over two hours to local media in his exit interview, it was a reminder that Pelinka barely cracked 20 minutes, this on the day the Lakers fired Frank Vogel and hours after this dumpster fire of a season ended. Fair to say he left the dais with some hands still raised in the audience. Was he being accountable? Do they really know what they're accountable for? All of this, of course, is relevant to the coaching search. How the Lakers approach this stuff matters. The image they project to the outside world matters. Particularly if they want to chase one of the big names on the coaching market, should one come available (like Quin Snyder, Doc Rivers or Nick Nurse, for example). How much damage have they done to themselves? PART 1 of 2 with Dan! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Westbrook Experience. How psychology and fit conspired to ruin something before it started in LA. The guy, it turns out, was way more complex than the Lakers knew what to do with. SEGMENT 2: How accountable is Pelinka holding himself? Does the org have a real idea what that means? SEGMENT 3: The roots of the coaching search. What led to Vogel's dismissal? During Vice President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Rob Pelinka's exit interview earlier this week, he presented himself as taking full-throated responsibility for all facets of arguably the worst season in Lakers franchise history. Except, of course, when he refused to offer details as to why exactly Frank Vogel was pretty much the only person taking the fall for this season, despite having the least say in the choices that went south. Or when he presented decisions as stopping with him, but also including Jeanie Buss, Kurt Rambis, Joey Buss, Jesse Buss, etc. Which isn't to say that Pelinka didn't put himself out there as the face of these and future decisions. But as guest Bill Oram of The Athletic wrote in his piece about the somewhat cagey and haughty interview, the man at the top of the executive food chain has officially run out of people to use as a meat shield. The conversation with Oram discusses Pelinka's job security, Jeanie Buss' patience, the Lakers front office dynamics, what to do about Russell Westbrook and LeBron James' futures with the franchise, and much more. As was reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Frank Vogel was officially fired by the Lakers on Monday, one of the many topics discussed by every member of the team (save Anthony Davis and Carmelo Anthony, who spoke on Sunday) and GM Rob Pelinka during the day's exit interviews. They talked about Vogel's dismissal, injuries, bad on-court chemistry, and Russell Westbrook. So much Russell Westbrook talk. That includes from Westbrook himself, who spoke at length and aggressively defended himself, even while acknowledging his play wasn't up to his standards. So why did things go so wrong with Russ? Was it doomed from the start? What did his interview reveal about Westbrook? The answers aren't just a matter of gossip or grist for the mill. Understanding how exactly the handling of Vogel's firing went wrong (and why Pelinka did a poor job fielding questions about it), why the roster construction didn't work, and what unmade Westbrook's relationship with his coach (among other things) is central to repairing the team heading into next season. Man alive, there's a lot of work coming for Pelinka and crew. So much intrigue, it was enough to make LeBron James delivering important health updates a mere footnote! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron James explained his health situation, noting he doesn't expect to have surgery on any of his ailments. Rob Pelinka fielded questions about Frank Vogel's dismissal, and didn't exactly shine. SEGMENT 2: Why Pelinka's bad answers about Vogel are important. SEGMENT 3: Russell Westbrook went on offense by defending himself. Did he have a point? Should the Lakers have seen all of this coming? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On today's episode, Jason and Producer Rob G kick things off with a deep dive into the Los Angeles Lakers' decision to fire head coach Frank Vogel. Vogel wasn't perfect, but he was far from the reason why the Lakers failed so spectacularly this season. Rob Pelinka gave Vogel - a defensive coach - a roster full of poor defenders, and compounded the problem by allowing LeBron James and Anthony Davis to convince him into trading for Russell Westbrook. Frank was clearly the 'fall guy' for everything that's gone wrong in Los Angeles this year. With Vogel out of the picture, the only question now is who can they get to replace him? Would an established guy like Nick Nurse or Quinn Snyder be willing to take over a relatively dysfunctional team? Would the Lakers really offer the gig to the criminally overrated Doc Rivers? Is there a young and up-and-comer from the college ranks that could make the jump to the NBA? Only time will tell. Later, Jason closes the show with a very special NBA Play-In Tournament (Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Brooklyn Nets / Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Clippers)  edition of the Best Bet.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Lakers' 2021-22 season has been an absolute disaster. Some reasons are beyond anybody's control... but many issues could have been avoided through better decisions. And while fans will - not without reason - point to the Russell Westbrook trade as the flashpoint for where everything that's fallen apart, it hasn't been the only bad call over the last few years. Poor decisions, major and minor, have helped what looked like a strong franchise fall apart in a hurry. So how did this happen? The Kamenetzkys spoke with Bleacher Report scribe and NBA cap expert Eric Pincus. He breaks down the personnel choices that went wrong, accounting mistakes they've made with contracts like Talen Horton-Tucker and Austin Reaves, squandered assets and draft picks and more. What is going on in the front office that promotes these kinds of mistakes? Is the decision-making infrastructure up to snuff? And what can they do going forward to fix things? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How important is it to look at transactions in a holistic way? How do individual moves impact each other? What's the cause and effect? How did the Anthony Davis deal lay some of the ground the Lakers walk on now? SEGMENT 2: Reviewing the Westbrook deal. How that went wrong... but how it was more the end point, not the start, of the team's devolution. SEGMENT 3: Who makes the decisions in El Segundo? Is the infrastructure what it should be? How could the Lakers fix it? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! PrizePicks Check out PrizePicks.com and use promo code: “NBA” or go to your app store and download the app today. No, Lakers fan, you are not allowed to have nice things, or enjoy anything for more than 24 hours. That's about as long as people had to absorb the awesomeness of LeBron James and his 56 point effort Saturday to beat the Warriors at the Crypt. Monday, his left knee swelled up like a balloon, and he had to sit out. Will he play Wednesday in Houston? Nobody knows. So the very, very shorthanded Lakers took the floor against San Antonio sporting a lineup that probably wouldn't win 25 games in an 82 game season and put up a good fight before ultimately falling short. Losing sucks, no question, but in some ways it was a more enjoyable game to watch, with Carmelo Anthony doing a lot of old-man-at-the-Y stuff, Austin Reaves making nice plays, THT picking up some nice buckets and so on. But really, what does it mean that once again the Lakers are playing without LeBron and Anthony Davis... again? When it was over, attention turned back to Russell Westbrook and the incredibly challenging year he's had, including news Monday from his wife on social media that she's received threats to the family because of how poorly this whole thing has gone. Westbrook responded after the game, and it's a moment worthy of conversation. Meanwhile, a report in The Athletic notes the relationship between Westbrook and the coaching staff hasn't improved. All signs continue to point to this partnership ending after only a season. Finally, The Athletic reports that the Lakers (specifically Jeanie Buss) are receiving advice and counsel from Magic Johnson and Phil Jackson. No surprise there, given how insular the team has been. Kobe Bryant, says the report, would have been offered a more formal front office job. His memory is inexorably intertwined with Rob Pelinka. It is an incredibly insular organization, which is fine when things are going well, but deeply problematic when they're not. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose in San Antonio, but the story is about who didn't play, more than who did. SEGMENT 2: Westbrook's nightmare of a season spills into newsmaking off the court. SEGMENT 3: The Lakers are a bubble, and only a few people are allowed in. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
