Send us a textOn this episode of Speaking of … College of Charleston, Mark Del Mastro, Associate Provost for Academic and International Programs, and Chris Korey, Associate Provost for Student Success, talk about launching their new podcast, Faculty Off the Clock. This podcast takes you beyond the classroom to reveal the hidden lives of College of Charleston faculty. From woodworking enthusiasts to barbershop quartet singers, you'll meet professors with fascinating passions and stories that go far beyond academia. Korey and Del Mastro hope these conversations will highlight not only unique interests of the guests but will function as a bridge to connect people on campus with shared interests. “Both Mark and I were faculty members at one point, and most of your identity on campus is sort of tied up into what your scholarship is and teaching and you very rarely have opportunities to talk about what you do outside of that,” says Korey. “So we wanted to create a venue where people have the opportunity to talk about those things because it doesn't normally come up in our work environments.”Humor is a big part of their collaboration and Del Mastro and Korey make a habit of asking their guests a series of lightening round questions on topics from hot dogs vs. hamburgers to celebrity crushes. They also make it a point to ask guests about whether they like popcorn, which is a shared love and an ongoing joke between the hosts, and it gives them an opportunity to share their love of the Whirley Pop stove-pop popper. They end the episode by presenting guests with a customized bobblehead doll. “The whole purpose of the podcast is to show the lighter side of the faculty member and what better characterizes the lighter side of someone than a bobblehead?” says Del Mastro. Featured on this episode:Mark Del MastroAs Associate Provost for Academic and International Programs, Mark P. Del Mastro, Professor of Spanish/Hispanic Studies, provides leadership and support in the area of curriculum development and review and academic policy. He also oversees the Center for International Education, the Office of the Registrar, and the Office for Institutional Effectiveness.Born in Bowling Green, Kentucky and raised in northern New Jersey, Del Mastro earned his B.A. at Wake Forest University, his M.A. at Middlebury College, and his Ph.D. at the University of Virginia. After defending his doctoral dissertation in August 1992, “Dr. D” relocated to Charleston, South Carolina to begin a career at The Citadel, where for 18 years he taught a variety of courses to include Spanish language and literature, and Hispanic culture and business. After serving four years as Head of The Citadel's Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, in July 2010 Del Mastro joined the College of Charleston where he served as Chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies until August 2019 when he transitioned to his current role as Associate Provost for Academic and International Programs in the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs.Chris KoreyAs Associate Provost for Student Success, Christopher Korey, Professor of Biology, leads the Office for the Academic Experience, which provides students with educationally purposeful activities that lead to deep learning, integrated social and intellectual development, and engagement with local and global communities. Sabyn Mayfield: Crossing The Bridge to Recovery | The Hopeaholics PodcastSabyn Mayfield, CEO of Brigid Recovery, delivers a raw and inspiring account of his 20-year journey through addiction, trauma, and recovery. As a former client of Brigid Recovery, a trauma-focused residential workshop in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Sabyn shares how his struggles with sobriety and identity, compounded by a career in film and music, led him to confront deep-seated family-of-origin trauma. He emphasizes the relativity of trauma, the transformative power of addressing shame, and the importance of becoming one's own loving parent, offering insights into Brigid's non-medical approach that prioritizes “what happened to you” over diagnosis. Sabyn's candid reflections on spiritual bottoms, the necessity of daily recovery practices, and the liberation of the Ninth Step resonate deeply, while his personal anecdotes—such as his familial connection to Dolly Parton and his mother's Emmy-winning casting career—add a unique layer to his story. Recorded with authenticity and humor, this episode underscores the podcast's mission to foster hope, highlighting Sabyn's shift from chaos to empowerment and his commitment to helping others heal, making it a must-listen for anyone navigating recovery or seeking to understand trauma's lasting impact.#TheHopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover  #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #RecoveryIsPossible #Hope #wedorecover Join our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Follow the Hopeaholics on our Socials:https://www.instagram.com/thehopeaholics https://linktr.ee/thehopeaholicsBuy Merch: https://thehopeaholics.myshopify.comVisit our Treatment Centers: https://www.hopebythesea.comIf you or a loved one needs help, please call or text 949-615-8588. A name carries history, identity, and belonging—but what happens when it's lost to time? In 1984, the quiet town of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was rocked by a gruesome discovery along Interstate 65-- the discovery of a body. With no immediate clues to her identity, the woman became known only as "Bowling Green Jane Doe," her past a mystery and her voice silenced. Who was she? How did she end up there? And, more importantly, would she ever be given her name back? In this episode of Coffee and Cases, we unravel the story of a young woman whose identity was restored—but whose fate still raises more questions than answers. If you are interested in bonus content for our show or in getting some Coffee and Cases swag, please consider joining Patreon. In episode #293, we welcome good friend of The Coaches Site, Dave Smith. Two days before we were scheduled to record this podcast he notified us that he had been relieved of his duties as the Head Coach of RPI. Despite that, he agreed to join the pod with his only request being that we focus on the future and the positive experiences he enjoyed during his eight season's leading the RPI program. Previous to his time with RPI Smith spent 12 seasons as Head Coach at Canisius College. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Coach for seven seasons split between Miami University (Ohio), Bowling Green, and Mercyhurst. He is now going to start a new chapter in his coaching journey and will again relish in the opportunity to build and lead a team. We hope that this conversation will give other coaches hope and help them navigate the curveballs that the game throws at them. Listen as he shares the message he left his players with after being let go, why the royal road has changed offensive hockey, and why it all starts with following you passion.
