Welcome to Episode 56. In this episode I'm back down the arrow rabbit hole looking for an all round arrow to shoot with both NFAS and EFAA. I've shot .166, .204, .245 and .359 and each has its pros and cons. I need something that will shoot out to 80+ yards without being too badly affected by wind drift, but also something that is fat enough to catch lines when shooting spots. I'm also looking for a forgiving arrow that can hopefully mitigate my bad shots (there are way too many of those ;-) ). Looking on the better known, more respected YouTube channels led me to Nock On, Exodus Outdoor Gear and a lesser known channel Mat From Texas, who, along with John Stallone and Exodus Outdoor Gear have convinced me to add first bend indexing to my arrow building process. Nock On Archery has a really fascinating podcast with Dr. James Park who received his doctorate in arrow flight. Who doesn't love bacon? Today we sat down with Heat Laliberte, the owner and founder of One Arrow Meats, a Vancouver based, small-batch, hand-cured, naturally smoked, hormone-free bacon company. One Arrow is more than just bacon. It represents Heat's indigenous heritage, his goals, and his ability to overcome obstacles. Spending his childhood in Saskatchewan, the Cree-Metis Chef has called Vancouver home since 2002. After a youth that consisted of running away, racism, and struggling with his identity as a trans man, Heat found a strong sense of family amongst the LGTBQ+ community in Davie Village. Starting as a linecook, Heat would go onto working in the kitchen of top hotels and starting his own business venture. Throughout his life, Heat has been on a journey to find himself, come to terms with his identity, achieve more and cook delicious food. Sometimes it's attributed to the Buddha, but it's much more likely that it originated from an unknown source, coming from some member of Alcoholics Anonymous. However, the phrase is consistent with the Buddha's teachings, as we see in this quote from the Sallatha Sutta: “When touched with a feeling of pain, the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person sorrows, grieves, & laments, beats his breast, becomes distraught. So he feels two pains, physical & mental. Just as if they were to shoot a man with an arrow and, right afterward, were to shoot him with another one, so that he would feel the pains of two arrows; in the same way, when touched with a feeling of pain, the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person sorrows, grieves, & laments, beats his breast, becomes distraught. So he feels two pains, physical & mental.” How can we avoid telling ourselves stories about our pain? How can we experience the pain alone? How can we avoid piercing ourselves with that second arrow?
