In another case, an official Superman book criticized Zack Snyder. In both universes, fanbases are divided, politicized, anti-heroic. It feels like they're pitting fan “denominations” against each other. As a late famous comic creator famously uttered, “ ‘Nough said.” 2. But everybody loves one friendly hero. Meanwhile, over in the Spiderverse corner of the Marvel world … Corporate heads, marketeers, and actors alike are unifying for this. Consider one recent GQ stunt with Brand New Day actors at trivia. (‘Ware language.) Actors were asked about many Spidey versions. In this universe, every story gets canonized and respected equally. This follows No Way Home's blend of previous film characters. But for DC, they've tried to purge all previous versions except one. This unifying approach helps fans love all Spider-Man versions. Whether you like Tobey, Andrew, or Tom, you can celebrate Spidey! So it's not political. Now fans can have fun doing compare/contrast. This ends up more like denominations who unify in essential faith. (And yet that only goes so far. Holland won't meet Madame Webb.) 3. The rise of self-aware yet sincere stories. This year we've seen a wonderful increase of truly good films. Three come from Amazon/MGM: Project Hail Mary, The Sheep Detectives, and even Masters of the Universe all work so well. Jenneth Leed praised Hail Mary's earnest optimism and hope. This is “metamodern,” a flavor beyond modern and postmodern. Now we've faced real-life dystopia, war, political unrest, and a divided society. More people long for the hope of modernism, but aren't so naïve to think life doesn't come with the complexities postmodernism criticized. So instead of embracing one philosophy over another, metamodernism combines the best features of both. This approach keeps the self-awareness, irony, and subversions of expectations. But these stories also value hope, sincere themes, and admirable heroes. In fact, one working definition for metamodern storytelling may be, “Delivering a sincere theme about life in a self-aware or absurd premise.” Note: this isn't the same as flippant stories that claim “optimism.” And it's a whole galaxy far from stories ashamed of their nature. Stephen has loved “metamodern” stories wherever they appear. The Tick and Galaxy Quest also skewer tropes yet stay sincere. Even the original Superman: The Movie (1978) does this so well. Do note Richard Donner's out-loud commitment to verisimilitude. So do Sam Raimi's and Marc Webb's two Spider-Man film series. And one detects much of this in Lord and Miller's Spiderverse Brand New Day will likely follow in these wall-crawling footsteps. We've had enough division over clashing canons and flippancy. Through other reboots and controversies, Spidey stays faithful! And if other Marvel and DC films do the same, they can unify fans. Some people implied that if you made up too much stuff, you'd lose track of reality. Alas. For some cases, they’re absolutely right. Too many people are abusing God's gift of imagination. They cast people they do not know as villains in a fantasy world in which they are the big moral heroes. This habit is taking over social media. And now this sin is hurting faithful creators we know. How can Christian fans respond?

Important things.  We get a bit into the drama surrounding the YouTube content creator Hank Green, who has for some reason self canceled over his sin of….using ChatGPT to do his grunt work so that he can have more time to make more content. Yeah, we don't understand either. We also get into the thornier issue of authors allegedly using genAI in their writing, which has become a flashpoint in the anti-AI space. The issue is, who is to say if an author used genAI, the AI? Readers? Publishing houses? And at the end of the day, does it really matter to consumers, or is this the latest cause as identity?  And of course we do a fairly in depth discussion of the new Spider-Man movie Brand New Day, which brings us all the way back to episode 0 of this podcast when we talked about No Way Home. Ah, the nostalgia. Peter goes to talk to the MIT admissions person but ends up being greeted by Doctor Octopus who seems to know a lot about him despite Peter never meeting him before. Peter learns that the spell has summoned people who know Spider-Man's secret identity from across the multiverse. Strange tasks Peter, MJ, and Ned with capturing the interdimensional visitors, leading them to capture Electro, Sandman, the Lizard, and Norman Osborn. Peter soon realizes that each villain was pulled from their universe moments before their death and believes they deserve a chance at redemption instead of being sent back to die. Defying Strange, Peter steals the spell that would send everyone back to their own dimension and begins developing cures for the villains using Stark technology. Peter successfully restores Doctor Octopus, but Norman's Green Goblin persona takes over once again, convincing the other villains to turn on Peter. This leads to a massive battle that fatally injures Aunt May. Before she dies, she reminds Peter that "with great power, there must also come great responsibility," leaving him devastated and questioning whether he made the right choice. Ned unexpectedly discovers he can use Strange's sling ring to open portals. While searching for Peter, he and MJ instead find two alternate Spider-Men from different universes. Maybe you've seen them before in other movies?! I dunno. The three Peters unite and create cures for each enemy and lure them to the Statue of Liberty for one final showdown. It works! But rifts open across the multiverse. Realizing there is only one solution, Peter asks Strange to cast a new spell that erases Peter Parker from everyone's memory. The spell saves the multiverse, sending everyone back to their own universes. Peter visits MJ and Ned, intending to remind them who he is, but decides not to disrupt the new lives they've built. After paying his respects at Aunt May's grave and sharing a quiet moment with Happy Hogan, Peter embraces a fresh start. We've tuned out of Marvel on the podcast for a little while, but one of the eternally entertaining superheroes, Spider-Man, reignites our interest with Brand New Day. With Doctor Strange having cast a spell at the end of 2021's No Way Home to make the entire world forget Peter Parker, for reasons that Doctor Strange presumably cast another spell to make us forget, Peter, newly isolated, returns to fighting street-level crime in New York City while pining for his old relationships and suffering severe headaches. Can he revive his former life? Surely it wouldn't be a Marvel film if an enormously significant, cliff-hanging event had permanent consequences. Still, even for those as cynical as it's possible to be about the MCU, Brand New Day has plenty to recommend it. It aims for thematic depth - though how fully that's achieved is up for discussion - and is genuinely moving. Indeed, certain moments move the audience to cheer and applaud, which in turn moves Mike to harrumph bitterly. Destin Daniel Cretton, directing his second MCU entry following Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, demonstrates a gift for working with actors and a strong instinct for staging action, although Cineworld does its best to undermine those virtues with its poor projection. We also return to our discussion of IMAX and The Odyssey, asking whether the frame's envelopment of the visual field impedes filmmakers' ability to express through composition and framing, and considering whether there's something fundamentally anti-democratic about making films whose fullest form can only be experienced at a handful of cinemas around the world. It's been 281 episodes since the last live-action Spider-Man review. I'm old.SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the first of the MCU movies not to be helmed by Jon Watts. With this new change comes a new vantage point. Instead of this movie dropping Spider-Man (Tom Holland) into the wider MCU universe and its ramifications, this film gives the Webhead more of a chance to shine on his own.Some of this is by design: NO WAY HOME ended with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) granting Peter a spell to make everyone forget not only that Peter Parker is Spider-Man's secret identity, but also to forget Peter Parker even exists. The Witness Protection Program could never.In this isolation, Peter becomes a full-time friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, stopping robberies and cooperating with the cops while wistfully scrolling through Snap stories of his best friends Ned and MJ (Jacob Batalon & Zendaya), who are enjoying their four years at M.I.T.Peter's life at this moment is all work with some aunt-grieving on the side. The constant hero stress and bruising activates a response from Pete's arachnid DNA: it's morphin' time! With it comes a sort of Spider-puberty. He grows much stronger, develops organic webbing (I'm sure Tobey's in the other universe cackling. "How's the spinerette juice, fucker?") , and grows prone to a more feral, angry temperament. For a Spider-Man labeled by New York as a hero, the menace starts to creep in.But wait, there's more! (Rest in peace, Billy Mays.) A new threat begins attacking Damage Control centers throughout the city. This government agency is, in a way, picking up where SHIELD left off, with a focus on repurposing alien and enhanced-human tech for the betterment of all mankind. This threat has a way of possessing people's bodies, hopscotching their way past security officers and into vaults, searching for the most valuable technology called V-Max.A Spider-sense can only do so much against someone who can jump between bodies at will. It does even less against someone with the capability of finding Peter's loved ones and putting them in a danger he previously thought impossible. I haven't seen him this psychologically disturbed by a villain since Hobgoblin from the '90s TV show.The new ground-level approach does well for crafting a more lived-in New York. Holland's performance is better than ever. The different MCU characters introduced don't step on each other's toes. And yet, I find the big issue with these Spider-Man films remain: they're overstuffed. As a result, I spend more time looking at the clock rather than letting my heart get swept away by the drama.But as is, it's a good leap in the right direction for these movies. We're finally all caught up on the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, just in time for Brand New Day! We were joined once again by Arcadio from 4th & Infinity to watch the most recent entry, 2021's No Way Home. We reminisced about the very memorable theatrical experiences we had watching the film, discussed what does and doesn't work five years later and evaluated how it compares to the rest of Spidey's filmography. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. Produced by Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Pascal Pictures, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is intended to be the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man film series. The film is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton ("Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings"), written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo.
