Naturally, Peter's life is thrown into chaos. The Department of Damage Control, something I'm almost positive doesn't actually exist but how can you know, interrogates Peter, MJ, Ned, and Aunt May. Their attorney, Daredevil, gets the charges dismissed. Despite his legal victory, the public turns on him. Feeling bad about screwing up his friends' future, Peter asks Dr. Strange to cast a spell that will make the world forget he's Spider-Man. But Peter keeps interrupting the spell to add people he doesn't want to forget, causing it to go nuts and pull visitors from across the multiverse into their reality. Peter goes to talk to the MIT admissions person but ends up being greeted by Doctor Octopus who seems to know a lot about him despite Peter never meeting him before. Peter learns that the spell has summoned people who know Spider-Man's secret identity from across the multiverse. Strange tasks Peter, MJ, and Ned with capturing the interdimensional visitors, leading them to capture Electro, Sandman, the Lizard, and Norman Osborn. Peter soon realizes that each villain was pulled from their universe moments before their death and believes they deserve a chance at redemption instead of being sent back to die. Defying Strange, Peter steals the spell that would send everyone back to their own dimension and begins developing cures for the villains using Stark technology. Peter successfully restores Doctor Octopus, but Norman's Green Goblin persona takes over once again, convincing the other villains to turn on Peter. This leads to a massive battle that fatally injures Aunt May. Before she dies, she reminds Peter that "with great power, there must also come great responsibility," leaving him devastated and questioning whether he made the right choice. Ned unexpectedly discovers he can use Strange's sling ring to open portals. While searching for Peter, he and MJ instead find two alternate Spider-Men from different universes. Maybe you've seen them before in other movies?! I dunno. The three Peters unite and create cures for each enemy and lure them to the Statue of Liberty for one final showdown. It works! But rifts open across the multiverse. Realizing there is only one solution, Peter asks Strange to cast a new spell that erases Peter Parker from everyone's memory. The spell saves the multiverse, sending everyone back to their own universes. Peter visits MJ and Ned, intending to remind them who he is, but decides not to disrupt the new lives they've built. After paying his respects at Aunt May's grave and sharing a quiet moment with Happy Hogan, Peter embraces a fresh start. Now completely anonymous, he creates a new homemade Spider-Man suit and swings back into the city, beginning the next chapter of his life as a true friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. We've tuned out of Marvel on the podcast for a little while, but one of the eternally entertaining superheroes, Spider-Man, reignites our interest with Brand New Day. With Doctor Strange having cast a spell at the end of 2021's No Way Home to make the entire world forget Peter Parker, for reasons that Doctor Strange presumably cast another spell to make us forget, Peter, newly isolated, returns to fighting street-level crime in New York City while pining for his old relationships and suffering severe headaches. Can he revive his former life? Surely it wouldn't be a Marvel film if an enormously significant, cliff-hanging event had permanent consequences. Still, even for those as cynical as it's possible to be about the MCU, Brand New Day has plenty to recommend it. It aims for thematic depth - though how fully that's achieved is up for discussion - and is genuinely moving. Indeed, certain moments move the audience to cheer and applaud, which in turn moves Mike to harrumph bitterly. Destin Daniel Cretton, directing his second MCU entry following Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, demonstrates a gift for working with actors and a strong instinct for staging action, although Cineworld does its best to undermine those virtues with its poor projection. We also return to our discussion of IMAX and The Odyssey, asking whether the frame's envelopment of the visual field impedes filmmakers' ability to express through composition and framing, and considering whether there's something fundamentally anti-democratic about making films whose fullest form can only be experienced at a handful of cinemas around the world. Tom Holland dons the spidey suit once more, picking up in the years following the cataclysmic events of No Way Home. Unfortunately, it's more of what Marvel films have been suffering from lately without enough of the quality that has been present within Holland's first two outings as Spider-Man. It's great to see him swing through the streets of New York, even if it's recycling the same Glasweigan set on which it was filmed, but the overabundance on product placement early on makes it painfully apparent that Sony ought to give up custody and let Disney take the reins for the hero moving forwatd. Great news if you're looking to upgrade to the latest Samsung Galaxy Z8 flip phone or fancy the new BMW which has spidey approved sport mode! In theatres now, though I'd argue it may be better enjoyed at home with a large 1.5l bottle of wine.

As the third in his trilogy soon became mired by COVID and the potential extinction of theaters, the two studios decided to make this the biggest film yet -- bringing back past villains and Peter Parkers wholesale. While the movie resurrected theaters from the pandemic and received raving reviews and reactions, peoples' feelings on it have waned over time. So, does it still hold up? Before you see Brand New Day (or after, who knows!), come join Brian, Alec, Darby, and Trey as they finish up the Spider-Marathon with a film that still feels a little unreal -- the extended version of SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME!

Spider-Man: Brand New Day riesce nella cosa più difficile: trovare una vera ragione per esistere dopo il finale quasi perfetto di No Way Home. In questa recensione di Spin-Off, inizialmente senza spoiler, analizziamo il quarto film con Tom Holland e il cambio di direzione portato da Destin Daniel Cretton. Peter Parker è completamente solo. Il mondo ha dimenticato la sua identità, Ned e MJ non ricordano più chi sia e Peter ha messo in pausa la propria vita per diventare Spider-Man a tempo pieno. Nascondersi dietro la maschera è diventato il suo modo per non affrontare il dolore e tutto ciò che ha perso. Parliamo della nuova evoluzione dei suoi poteri, della regia più fisica e dinamica, delle spettacolari sequenze d'azione, della CGI e di un ritmo che regge per quasi due ore e mezza. Ampio spazio anche al rapporto irrisolto tra Peter e MJ, alla sorprendente coppia formata da Spider-Man e il Punitore di Jon Bernthal e al misterioso personaggio interpretato da Sadie Sink. Non tutto, però, funziona allo stesso modo. Hulk sembra molto più importante nel marketing che nella storia e il finale corre troppo, lasciando irrisolte diverse trame proprio quando il film dovrebbe tirare le somme. The Witness Protection Program could never.In this isolation, Peter becomes a full-time friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, stopping robberies and cooperating with the cops while wistfully scrolling through Snap stories of his best friends Ned and MJ (Jacob Batalon & Zendaya), who are enjoying their four years at M.I.T.Peter's life at this moment is all work with some aunt-grieving on the side. The constant hero stress and bruising activates a response from Pete's arachnid DNA: it's morphin' time! With it comes a sort of Spider-puberty. He grows much stronger, develops organic webbing (I'm sure Tobey's in the other universe cackling. "How's the spinerette juice, fucker?") , and grows prone to a more feral, angry temperament. For a Spider-Man labeled by New York as a hero, the menace starts to creep in.But wait, there's more! (Rest in peace, Billy Mays.) A new threat begins attacking Damage Control centers throughout the city. This government agency is, in a way, picking up where SHIELD left off, with a focus on repurposing alien and enhanced-human tech for the betterment of all mankind. This threat has a way of possessing people's bodies, hopscotching their way past security officers and into vaults, searching for the most valuable technology called V-Max.A Spider-sense can only do so much against someone who can jump between bodies at will. It does even less against someone with the capability of finding Peter's loved ones and putting them in a danger he previously thought impossible. I haven't seen him this psychologically disturbed by a villain since Hobgoblin from the '90s TV show.The new ground-level approach does well for crafting a more lived-in New York. Holland's performance is better than ever. The different MCU characters introduced don't step on each other's toes. And yet, I find the big issue with these Spider-Man films remain: they're overstuffed. As a result, I spend more time looking at the clock rather than letting my heart get swept away by the drama.But as is, it's a good leap in the right direction for these movies. Produced by Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Pascal Pictures, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is intended to be the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man film series. The film is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton ("Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings"), written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Today we're breaking down everything you need to know about what comes next in the Nick Reiner case.Alan Jackson quit as Nick's attorney this morning — but not before delivering a statement that sounded more like a closing argument than a goodbye: "Nick Reiner is NOT guilty of murder under California law. Print that." Three weeks of investigation. Ten sealed subpoenas. And now he's gone.Here's what that statement actually means. California's insanity defense works in two phases. First, the jury decides guilt based on the evidence. Then — if guilty — a second trial determines whether the defendant was legally insane at the time of the crime. That's where Jackson's words apply. Under the M'Naghten Rule, the defense must prove Nick couldn't understand what he was doing or couldn't tell right from wrong at the exact moment of the killings. Less than one percent of defendants plead insanity. Only about a quarter succeed.Nick is now represented by Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, who met him for approximately thirty seconds before the hearing. But the LA County Public Defender's Office has one of the best capital case records in the country — between 2006 and 2015, only one of their clients was sentenced to death out of thirty appeals.Here's what most people miss: even if the insanity defense works, Nick doesn't walk free. He goes to a state psychiatric hospital — potentially for life. Facilities where the DOJ found civil rights violations and patient murders.The insanity defense isn't an escape hatch.
