We talk a lot about — and when I say 'we,' I mean the wider queer community — how upsetting it is that queer bars and clubs are closing at an accelerated rate. But I think the bigger tragedy is the disappearance of queer cafés.And maybe it's wrong to pit them against each other, but queer cafés offer that beautiful intermediate step. They're not as full-on or intimidating as a bar or a club, and they're places where you can just be. There's no pressure to perform, no need to match the thump of a bassline — just you, your overpriced oat flat white, and the comforting hum of conversations that sound a little more like home. One of the absolute best queer cafés that ever existed — and I won't hear any counterarguments — was First Out Café in Central London. Before it closed in 2011 to make way for yet another railway construction project, it was a sanctuary. A place where you could nervously nurse a tea while pretending to read the free gay magazines that used to exist, all the while sneaking glances at the other queers who had found refuge there too. It's also where today's guest, drag king extraordinaire Mr Wesley Dykes, took his first tentative steps into queerdom. Growing up between Lagos and South London, Wesley navigated the complexities of identity, family expectations, and self-acceptance. And when that weight felt a little too heavy, First Out Café was there — offering a cup of tea and the reassuring presence of a community.Other episodes about First Out Cafe'The First Gay Place That I Went Inside...' - with Alex Iantaffi from Gender Stories PodcastFirst Out Cafe, London (with Ali Brumfitt)Follow meInstagram: www.instagram.com/lostspacespodFacebook: www.facebook.com/lostspacespodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lostspacespodSign up to the Queer Word newsletter: https://queer-word.beehiiv.com/subscribeSupport meBuy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lostspacespodFollow my guestInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mrwesleydykes/

There's a reason that the theme song to the Golden Girls hits so hard for me. And, I think it's because I've always valued friendships over all other types of relationships. There's just something magical about having that person who eggs you on, pushes you out of your comfort zone, and encourages you to be bolder than you ever thought possible. So, I loved hearing about Norwegian drag king Erik Sjon's first foray into dressing up—back when he and his friends would go full klub kid glam and dance the night away at Oslo's Erskin. This was well before he became a drag king or performer; it was just about self-expression, community, and joy.We talked about what drew him to drag, the inspiration behind his character, and that one time he and his friends accidentally became go-go dancers (as you do!). Oh, and—true to form—I completely failed to pick up on the pun in Erik's name. Did you get it? No worries if not—he's just about to explain it.Follow meInstagram: www.instagram.com/lostspacespodFacebook: www.facebook.com/lostspacespodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lostspacespodSign up to the Queer Word newsletter: https://queer-word.beehiiv.com/subscribeSupport meBuy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lostspacespodFollow my guestInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/king.eriksjon/

What's up Bros? In this episode of RHOP, Ashley has her big performance. Mia and Karen have a big blowout at the Drag King performance. Stacey causes some confusion when she switches sides from team Karen to defending Mia. Kierna lets us in on some more struggles between her and Greg, and it appears that her presence on this show is a major concern for Greg. That and Gregs overall demeanor and general bad attitude makes him a real keeper... Wendy gets a huge opportunity to go to the White House and interview Karine Jean Pierre. Stacey throws Karen under the bus (rightfully so) when she reveals to Mia that Karen told Stacey to not befriend Wendy, calling her self absorbed amongst other things... What's up Bros? We are one week behind on Potomac but we will be all caught up this week. This was a better episode, and you can point to the main reason being the LACK of Mia and her minion for the majority of the episode. We get to check in with Gizelle and her daughters in a lovely little scene. Ashley is getting ready for her Drag King performance as Ashley T.O.P. Kierna gets more involved as she, Gizelle and Wendy sit down at K's salon. She goes through some more Greg drama, and it appears that Greg is still holding on to some old values that Kierna does no align with. She is a strong, independent woman and business owner and wants to be recognized as such. Team Kierna 4 life. In possibly one of the best scenes of the season, Ray and Gordon sit down and Gordon reveals a lot when it comes to the Mia drama this year. We get confirmation that Jeremiah is in fact his son, we also get an explanation from his side of things as to why he took the kids... and it sounds reasonable. He even says he had the kids 25/30 days in the month of June, showing that Mia's custody claims are BS along with the divorce talk. Ray lets slip that Karen warned of potential blue eyes when their child, Rayvin was born... sorta snuck that one in there Ray. TJ attempts to further his relationship with Stacey, and i guess it was a better showing from him? But the whole thing is still super weird. Karen lets Gizelle know about all she found out from Ray and Gordon's lunch, and Karen and Gizelle decide to take it straight to Mia to confront her and her lies... Learn more about your ad choices. We contrast drag queen's humiliation of women with the unwillingness to humiliate men on similarly dark terms, using the examples of rap battling and drag kings. We also examine drag subculture as fuelled by sexual jealousy, with contempt and resentment towards women at the motivational heart of why gay men want to do drag queen performances in the first place. Plus, drag kings as banal cringe, the over-reliance on sexual humour in LGBT culture, the problem of what to do for gay rights nowadays from a third sector perspective, the great Mr Meno, LGBTQ+ politics as a strange mix of hyper-sexualisation and infantilism, and the way gay men sometimes use women in a similar way to how straight men do.

But today on the show, we're telling the story of one Elsie Saldaña — aka El Daña. As someone who started performing in drag in 1965, she's now considered one of the oldest drag kings still performing in the U.S. Over the course of her long performance career, many forces have converged that could have stopped her from taking to the stage.
