No doubt Donald Trump's brand is dicey at home at best but globally, the world has watched on with a mix of amusement and feigned concern. These results out of Canada and Australia at the weekend show that brand has turned toxic... like a beef Wellington at a family dinner party. We've all seen the host - the chef - tuck in... but now we're thinking hmm... do we want to do the same. We can't get much closer in style and substance to Canada and Australia when it comes to democracy - both chained to the Westminster system we inherited Mother England... and both of our cousins have turned on their political oppositions as Trump upends the global order. To rub salt in the wound both Poilievre and Dutton lost not just their elections but their seats. We spoke about this on Friday but... but what is the message here? Trump is toxic. Poilievre's problem was one of style - he sounded and campaigned too much like Trump - the airports hanger with the branded plane behind shots on the nightly news. Dutton's problem was more complicated... first. He ran a crap campaign. Realising a defence plan so expensive it gets funding to 35 of GDP and means you can't Albo's tax cuts in a cost-of-living crisis - and then only releasing that plan two weeks out from campaign day was dumb. But it was also about that word economists are spitting out like a bad steak - uncertainty. Don't ask Luxon though - he gave a bizzare response when asked about this yesterday... Basically... the Aussies and the Canadians simply picked the most economically credible parties in the face of uncertain times. What? Those parties he's endorsing are both from the left. That's the equivalent of kicking his sister parties (The Aussie Libs and Canadian Conservatives) in the shins. Made no sense. I think he wanted to avoid mentioning the trump bump. What's actually happening here is not really about parties. In times of uncertainty, you don't change your horse mid-steam. Voters stick with what they know. When the worlds in a spin, you don't know up from down, Albo from a-hole.... human nature, for the most part, is to do nothing and hope it goes away. Why risk a new government of unknown quantity? Singapore's arguably just done the same. The counter factual to this obviously is America, but remember the American economy was actually growing for past two years, consumer spending was strong, and inflation had come down earlier than ours. So that's a different set of circumstances. The best comparison for what's happened in Australia and Canada in the past week is 2020, New Zealand. A bunch of people really worried a perceived global threat rallying around flagpole and rejecting a campaign that wasn't neither well-run or nailing the public mood. Which Judith Collins' disastrous 2020 attempt didn't. Whether it was Trump, or a reaction to him. For Luxon to attribute the fiscal credentials of left-wing parties abroad with their success was an unnecessary own goal. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"Dirty John" Meehan, a serial con artist and violent criminal, was Terra Newell's stepfather. He had married her mother and spent years manipulating and abusing her until she finally left him. Enraged by her departure, he sought revenge. One day, after finishing her shift at work, Terra was walking to her car when John suddenly grabbed her from behind, wrapping his arm around her waist and trying to abduct her. In a desperate attempt to escape, she bit him. But his response was brutal—he began stabbing her repeatedly with a large knife. With every ounce of strength she had, Terra fought for her life. In a fierce struggle, she managed to knock the knife from his hand. Realising the only way to survive was to stop him for good, she knew she had to act fast. This is the story of Dirty John’s demise, told by the woman who lived through it. From a young age, Najla Turk had an appetite for learning but was surrounded by people and systems who made her doubt herself. As Najla pursued her education, she found herself juggling the incredibly difficult 24/7 role of a carer - first for her father, and then her own husband. Using the same tenacity that saw her achieve her education goals, Najla now uses self-care and compassion to be an advocate and role model for other unpaid carers and their needs.

Making us feel whole & reminding us that we are just a thread in the complex web of the natural world. While somewhat insignificant your thread has a role to play as a relative to the threads it lies next too. The way we all interact with each other - both human and other than human, will be our making or our undoing.Hilary Giovale, author of “becoming a good relative” is based in the ponderosa pine forests of Arizona, opposite a reservation & lives next to the sacred mountain of kinship which she now considers to be her most important teacher. This feels like an important conversation to have had - as two white women without indigenous heritage - it feels uncomfortable to have, and we will forever be learning, but Hilary (a 9th generation settler in the United States) begins the process of unpacking what it means to be in right relationship with the people & place that we each call home - pushing past the burden of white fragility to build pathways of robust healing & reconnection to our landscapes - to reconciliation with first peoples. She shares what it means to create ancestral alters & how to connect with these elders who's stories she tells us, are still unfolding. She reminds us that while the work we have to do is exceptionally confronting, grief won't kill us & that the time to heal in the bosom of natural landscapes is now."Elders are always identified by the community, never by the individual - they are usually unwilling but always shows up for the community, is wise, is generous, is funny, is humble, Our communities can guide us to where the elders are."Loved this? Logicalis, the leading global technology service provider, has released its annual CIO Report, which reveals that 95% of CIOs are actively investing in technology to create new revenue streams within the next 12 months. According to the report - which surveyed 1,000 CIOs from across the globe, including Ireland - the CIO role is no longer focused on enablement but on shaping business strategy and driving value, with nearly all CIOs (94%) regularly reporting to the board on return on investment (ROI). This expanded mandate is heightened by the rapid emergence of new technologies. The report found that almost all organisations are exploring how next-generation technologies can specifically support commercial growth. This trend shows no sign of slowing, with Artificial Intelligence (AI - 95%), machine learning capabilities (93%), and Internet of Things (IoT - 89%) initiatives among the most widely adopted emerging technologies over the past 12 months. Realising value from these investments remains a challenge with 85% of CIOs reporting a growing pressure for technology to demonstrate tangible business impact and many (64%) acknowledging that their next-generation technology investments have yet to deliver anticipated returns. As the gap between balancing investments and realised value intensifies, CIOs remain optimistic about the potential of these technologies. Still, most tech leaders (93%) continue to juggle limited time and resources to ensure better business outcomes. As CIOs consider innovations that support future growth, they must continue to navigate business-critical objectives. Despite unprecedented spending on security solutions, 88% experienced cybersecurity incidents in the last 12 months last year, with 43% enduring multiple breaches raising questions about the effectiveness of security spending. One area where they are beginning to see tangible financial results is through the integration of environmental technologies. Nine in ten (91%) CIOs have realised direct commercial benefits, and over half (53%) report these as significant. With a good track record, it is no surprise that those investing in environmental sustainability initiatives have risen from 92% in 2023 to 95% over the past 12 months. On this year's report, Bob Bailkoski, Global CEO of Logicalis Group, said: "For almost every business, technology has become the primary engine of innovation, growth and resilience. With this dependence comes a new expectation of CIOs - they're no longer just enablers of business strategy but drivers of commercial success. Whether through maintaining a keener focus on ROI from next-generation technologies, optimising security spending or maximising the financial benefits of sustainability initiatives, technology leaders need to seek out the right investments and partnerships that can help them deliver on their business goals." While most CIOs are confident that their IT spending is yielding a return, many (91%) believe there is room for improvement. As challenges around complexity, resources and performance visibility remain, the report highlights the importance of fostering strong technology partnerships to help CIOs meet this changing landscape, alleviate pressures and unlock value. Additional findings on innovation 94% agree the CIO role is becoming a key part of shaping business strategy and direction 94% report their organisation is exploring how next-generation technology can support their commercial growth 94% of CIOs are actively seeking opportunities to incorporate AI into their business, compared to 89% last year 86% report growing pressure within their organisation to ensure ROI from AI Additional findings on sustainability 95% say their organisation is increasing their investment in environmental sustainability initiatives and/or technologies, compared to 92% last year 94% think IT is core to the success of their organisation's sustainability goals, compared to 93% last year 93% report their organisation se...

It's for those of us parenting kids who are wired like us—the ones who see our struggles mirrored back in them, the ones trying to break cycles while still figuring ourselves out.In this episode, I talk about:✨ The moment I realized I was autistic because of my daughter✨ The struggles of parenting when you are also neurodivergent✨ The absolute chaos of ADHD x ADHD executive dysfunction✨ Why, despite the challenges, raising neurodivergent kids as a neurodivergent parent is actually kind of beautifulIf you've ever thought “I see myself in my child”—this one's for you.
Guy MacGillivray on Sugar and Mental Health – Our Most Downloaded Episode Ever! This episode is a game-changer! Our conversation with Guy MacGillivray has become the top episode of all time—and for good reason.Guy is a psychologist and social worker in Port Lincoln, a devoted father of three, and a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. But his journey into understanding sugar and mental health started with a personal revelation: he was using sugar to medicate stress in his life.Realising this, he made a change—cutting back on sugar, adjusting his morning routine, and practising gratitude for family, friends and meditative prayer. He quickly noticed the impact on not just his weight but his mental clarity and overall well-being.Guy poses a powerful question:"Are you a leaver or a finisher?"Can you stop at one scoop of ice cream, or do you finish the whole tub?For Guy, the only way forward was utterly removing sugar from his diet. And he believes you can do it, too.Beyond his journey, Guy's work is deeply impactful. He supports people with disabilities and their families to navigate housing, employment, and the NDIS system—helping them overcome barriers and live their best lives.Thank you, Guy, for making a difference in Port Lincoln and beyond!
Welcome back to part 2 of my conversation with the incredible Mark Allen! Dubbed the greatest endurance athlete of all time by ESPN, Mark is sharing the secrets behind his amazing results. Today, in particular, we’re focusing on mindset and motivation. If you haven’t heard part 1 yet, I highly recommend you do that first so you don’t miss any of the wisdom he shares. Mindset is a big part of triathlon training and races. Whether you’re gearing up for a major workout or standing at the start line, the thoughts running through your mind greatly impact your performance. He shares the moment from his first triathlon when he realised what a difference they made. When a competitor passed him, he felt the doubt creep in, his body tightened up and everything started to feel harder. Taking a moment to clear his mind he was able to acknowledge there was still plenty of time to retake his positon. This allowed him to regain his stride and overtake the competitor, securing fourth place amongst legends like Dave Scott and Scott Molina. A lot of people use affirmations to fight the doubt, and while it helped for training, Mark found they felt hollow when the fatigue of raceday sets in. Instead, quieting your mind reduces anxiety and allows you to give your best. It’s also a great tool outside of racing. Whether it’s an intense workout or one of life’s difficult moments, the ability to pause and find that quiet is invaluable. Realising it’s okay to let certain tasks wait if a larger priority needs attention helps in balancing life and triathlons. We then pivoted to an important aspect of training—periodisation. Mark suggests training should be broken down into manageable segments, so you can avoid risk of becoming overwhelmed. Many athletes make the mistake of constant training without rest, which can lead to physical and mental fatigue. But Mark emphasises the importance of recognising and addressing feelings of burnout or self-doubt. Sometimes a lack of motivation might be a signal to rest or recalibrate your goals. This is particularly important for age groupers juggling various commitments alongside their training. It’s about consistency and realistic goal-setting—stretching just beyond your comfort zone to discover what you’re truly capable of. Finally Mark shares how the lessons learned in triathlon can be applied to life. Accepting that achieving big goals often takes longer and requires more energy than anticipated can prevent burnout. And a mindset of patience and learning will make the journey rewarding, regardless of the outcome. Miriam Lancewood is an adventurer, author, and modern-day nomad who chose an extraordinary path far removed from the comforts of modern life. In 2010, Miriam and her husband Peter left civilisation behind, venturing into the high mountains of New Zealand with nothing but a backpack, a bow and arrow, and a tent. For seven years, they lived as nomads, hunting wild animals, foraging for plants, and embracing a primal existence in the wilderness. Since then, Miriam's journey has continued to evolve. Together with Peter, she has roamed the wilderness of Europe, braved personal challenges like Peter's battle with kidney failure, and settled into an off-grid cottage in Bulgaria. While Peter tends the land, Miriam embarks on solo expeditions, most recently exploring the remote regions of the Himalayas, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Miriam is also a celebrated author, with her international bestseller Woman in the Wilderness captivating readers across the globe. The word “journey” might get a bit overused when speaking about business, but there truly is no better word for it. A business idea is one tiny part of the story. Besides the fact that the business idea itself will likely take many different forms along the way, and that you’re never ever done when tackling something like building a business for yourself, you evolve so much as a person along the way. If that isn’t a hell of a journey, I don’t know what is. Kathryn McGarvey knows all about this particular expedition, she’s in the business of audience insights today, and it’s one of a few businesses she’s learnt, grown, languished and flourished within – as I’m sure you can relate to. In sharing her business building story you’ll hear about: Realising you’ve become unemployable Finding the business within the business Why the term “journey” for the experience of business is fundamental Building as you go The dark revenue moments And finding connection as a solopreneur Connect with Kathryn on LinkedIn Check out the NosyHQ Website And don’t forget to follow Unemployed & Afraid on IG , TikTok and LinkedIn Subscribe to the U&A Substack Join our Facebook Group And show your support for this independent podcast and small business by shouting your host a cuppa at buymeacoffee.com/unemployedpod You can reach your host on email kim@unemployedandafraid.com.au on IG on LinkedIn or via unemployedandafraid.com.auSupport the show by shouting me a cuppa (or 2): https://www.buymeacoffee.com/unemployedpodSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we have the wonderful James Gwinett on the pod! James is nine years alcohol free this year and we think it's safe to say he's definitely made the most of his sobriety. In his twenties, James was a semi-professional rugby player until he sustained a serious neck injury at 29. Realising that this had ended his rugby career, he fell into a depression which pushed his drinking into a place where he eventually felt like enough was enough and he had to change his life. He's now an author, his book 'Ready, Set, Life: A Story Of Redemption And The Lessons Learned' came out last year but even more importantly than that, he's also a Dad! Well it was lovely having James on the pod, he's a really inspiring guy and we know you're going to love listening to his episode with us. We're ending this final epsiode of 2024 in a beautiful place with Karima Kadaoui sharing in some co-reflections with me about the trustful and humanising society that she is seeing emerge in Morocco and beyond. It became really clear to me during this conversation with Karima, that the way that we talk about the work we are doing is a really important choice. This is because it sets up frames and expectations that really affect how we do the work. So for that reason, I'm not going to say much about the incredible work that is happening across communities, schools and government ministries across Morocco through the Tamkeen process as Karima describes it much more beautifully than I ever could. Karima co-founded Tamkeen Community Foundation for Human Development in Morocco in 2009 and holds the responsibility of its executive presidency. She refers to her organisation as a facilitating-dissolving structure living, with all its partners-in-flourishing, the answer to the question "how can our schools, communities, organisations, societal systems and societies be the expression and manifestation of our humanity; the shared essence that defines us and connects us to each other, to our natural world and the whole beyond our conscious grasp? Karima's Tamkeen process weaved and was woven with the threads of her 25 years experience working in private, public and social sectors. She worked with top tier companies in a big 5 management consultancy and as the associate senior consultant of a territorial development consultancy she co-founded. In the Moroccan government, she worked on public policy and governance in quality of the advisor to the Minister of Employment, Vocational Training and Housing. Her experiences in NPOs working with women suffering infra-human conditions in industries and with a community in a major shanty town have profoundly marked her. Karima is a full member of the Club of Rome. She is also a board member and advisor to Imal Initiative for Climate and Development the first independent non-profit North African climate think tank, as well to Africa Voices Dialogue "a space where the voices of Africa's educators and learners are seen, heard and loved". As we discuss in the conversation, the paper written by Karima and Louis Klein is entitled ‘Realising metamorphic transformation in the mirror of Tamkeen: Growing a shared understanding from co‐reflected lived experiences'. It can be found in the journal, Systems Research and Behavioral Science 41(5):738-749, August 2024 and is linked here. Karima also mentions the poem, Sept saisis par l'hiver', by René Char: Extract: ‘Ma Feuille Vineuse: Les mots qui vont surgir savent de nous ce que nous ignorons d'eux. Un moment nous serons l'équipage de cette flotte composée d'unités rétives, et le temps d'un grain, son amiral. Puis le large la reprendra, nous laissant à nos torrents limoneux et à nos barbelés givrés.' I recently read The Greatest Secret by Rhonda Byrne, and it felt like a perfect spiritual upgrade. The book emphasised that true happiness comes from recognising our awareness beyond our thoughts, and that fulfillment isn't tied to external circumstances. This message inspired me to shift my focus inward and realise that we're far more powerful than the stories we tell ourselves. This awareness reminded me that manifestation is a continuous process, shaped by our every thought and belief. Realising we're always creating our reality made me more intentional about my energy and mindset. I've started using visualisation techniques, like AI-generated scenarios, to vividly embody my desires and feel as though they're already mine. It's about embracing our potential and working in harmony with the universe to manifest a life filled with purpose and abundance. You can get your copy of the book The Greatest Secret right here.Don't forget to use the exclusive podcast discount code “PODCAST” for 10% off at cannycrystals.co.uk!I hope that you enjoy this episode, please feel free to leave a comment or a review wherever you're listening from. Brian Lawrence is a dad to 4, husband to 1, follower of Jesus, and founder of Winsight Leadership. What Problem do we solve: Our solution to the issue at hand is assisting leaders in realizing the importance of vulnerability in leadership and how to use it to foster a culture of trust, improve team relationships, and increase overall organizational performance. We address the difficulties leaders encounter in striking a balance between transparency and authority, and we offer doable solutions to create a positive work atmosphere that encourages cooperation, well-being, and sustained company progress. Small Business Answer Man's Shownotes: Examining how crucial vulnerability is to leadership. Realising the benefits of vulnerability in fostering trust and fortifying teams. The effects of trust on teamwork and output. Leaders may take certain actions to help their teams develop trust. The importance of an open and encouraging work environment. Techniques for team leaders to encourage cooperation and well-being. How vulnerable leaders may yet be in positions of control? Successful leaders who have managed to strike a balance between authority and vulnerability. Practical suggestions for integrating vulnerability into a leader's approach. Some pointers for establishing a transparent and honest line of communication in teams. Case studies of businesses where the leadership embraced vulnerability and the result was a success. Brian's Advice for Small Business Owners: Own up to your shortcomings, errors, and limits. This openness fosters trust and demonstrates that flaws are acceptable. Promote open communication by fostering an atmosphere where team members may freely express their ideas and worries without worrying about criticism or reprisals. Show vulnerability in your interactions to set an example for others to follow. Talk about the obstacles you've faced and the steps you've taken to overcome them. Engage your team in active feedback gathering and listening. This candour can encourage a culture of ongoing development and provide insightful discoveries. Be genuinely concerned about your teammates' emotions and general well-being. Recognize their viewpoints and attend to their needs. Encourage a culture within your team where being vulnerable is seen as a strength rather than a weakness.
