Got years of industry experience but still hiding in the background? It's time for some tough love. While you're staying comfortable in your expertise, people are making terrible decisions because they're learning from the wrong voices. The loudest people aren't always the most qualified, and your silence can often be a big part of the problem. In this episode, Jade sits down with Tiffany Brierley, co-founder of René House CIC, who has over seven years of frontline experience in the supported accommodation sector, watching unqualified people sell courses while the real experts stay quiet. The turning point? Realising that hiding her hard-earned knowledge while others dominated the conversation was harming the industry. Tiffany went from someone who absolutely 'hated being on Instagram' and avoided any form of spotlight, to launching her own coaching program and positioning herself as a voice for change in her industry. But, as always, this didn't happen overnight, and it required facing some uncomfortable truths about responsibility. In this episode, Jade and Tiffany speak about: How Tiffany 'accidentally' fell into supported accommodation Why expertise without visibility serves absolutely no one The real cost of staying in your comfort zone How business coaching can shift you from expert to industry leader Why the most qualified people often resist the spotlight the most The ripple effect when one expert finally speaks up How to build authority even when you hate self-promotion "Your expertise isn't yours to hoard - it comes with responsibility. While you're waiting to feel ready, people who need your help are making decisions based on advice from people who've never done what you do every day." Whether you're an industry veteran watching newcomers get all the attention, or you've been putting off building your authority because it feels 'salesy', or against everything you are, this episode will challenge everything you think about building expertise and putting yourself (and your business) out there. Because here's the uncomfortable truth: every day you stay quiet is another day the wrong voices dominate your industry. Ready to step into your voice and build the business you know you're capable of? Want to speak with Jade about business coaching? Welcome to another episode packed with insights, laughter, and brutally honest takes on what it's really like working behind the scenes of food innovation. Lucy starts us off by sharing why Stage Gate is close to her heart—yep, she's our resident “systems geek”—and Amy jumps in to champion the power of people and soft skills. Together, we break down how Stage Gate is supposed to be a framework that supports swift, safe, and high-quality product launches, not just another dreaded hoop to jump through. We explore why most folks in the food biz end up learning systems by osmosis rather than by proper training, and how the lack of clear, regularly reviewed processes leads to unnecessary pressure, repetition, and confusion—especially when every team seems to be stashing their own spreadsheet empire. We spill the beans on how they've helped businesses map out what's actually going on, often leaving people gobsmacked at the sheer complexity of bringing a product to shelf. The conversation doesn't shy away from the frustrations: outdated tech (“We're still using Excel from 1995, what's that about?”), squeezed timelines, and the struggle to get leadership onboard with investing in proper product development systems. We put a spotlight on the importance of soft skills and why junior and seasoned team members alike need better training and support—not just chucked in to ‘figure it out'.Listener questions spark discussion about AI's (potentially huge) role in freeing up time for the creative, human parts of innovation, and how vital it is to educate business leaders about making Stage Gate a business-wide priority, not just an NPD headache. In trademark Oh For Food's Sake style, the episode concludes with a call to constantly review systems, embrace new tech with open arms, and invest in people—because systems are only as good as the folks using them.Timestamps00:00 – Why Stage Gate is vital in the food industry00:54 – What Stage Gate is (and isn't)02:18 – Lucy's journey with Stage Gate + early food industry experiences04:25 – Why people and systems must work together05:23 – What Stage Gate actually does & where it goes wrong07:27 – Product development as the “gatekeeper” role08:24 – It's not just NPD's job: Why Stage-Gate is a business process10:07 – The chaos of poor systems: too many spreadsheets11:23 – The industry's slow adoption of technology12:45 – Workshop revelations: Realising the true complexity of launches14:25 – The knock-on effects of a broken process15:50 – What needs to change: Reviewing and modernising Stage-Gate17:23 – Making frameworks flexible and people-focused18:59 – Investing in soft skills and ongoing support19:28 – Embracing tech and AI as tools, not threats20:39 – Top takeaway: Systems + people = successful innovation21:30 – Audience questions: Leadership buy-in, off-the-shelf systems, AI worries24:54 – Training the next generation and the need for mentorship26:55 – Wrap up and calls to actionLinks and Resources:Website Link: https://ohforfoodssake.co.uk/FB Link: https://www.facebook.com/ohforfoodsakeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/oh-for-food-s-sake/You can follow us here on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oh_forfoodssake/For industry consulting from Lucy, connect with her on Instagram or LinkedIn.Find her on Instagram or LinkedIn for further support with industry coaching and facilitation from Amy.Oh For Food's Sake is sponsored by Microsearch Laboratories https://micro-search.co.uk/ and Point 74 https://www.point74.co.uk/See you next time!

Thursday with Tabitha 1. Jonah by Tabitha Smith Hello, and welcome to the first episode in our series about the Minor Prophets. We're starting our series in the book of Jonah. Of all the books of the Minor Prophets Jonah is perhaps the one that people are most familiar with, or at least they think they are familiar with the story line. Many people will have heard about Jonah and the giant fish. But there is a lot more to the book of Jonah than this! We going to look at some historical background to the book, the type of writing it is, the details of the plot, the major themes of the book and how we might apply these to our own lives today. Jonah prophesied during the reign of King Jeroboam II, who ruled between 782 and 753 BC. Jonah is unusual amongst the Old Testament prophets in that his primary audience was a pagan nation, not the people of Israel or Judah. People have debated about whether the story of Jonah is actually a historical tale or whether it might be a kind of parable or allegory. Some would argue that the episode involving the giant fish is too far-fetched to be historical. Others have argued that it is entirely possible for this to have happened, even without any miraculous intervention. However, the book of Jonah certainly bears all the features of a historical prophetic account and Jesus refers to the account of Jonah in Matthew chapter 12, treating the story as a genuine historical account of real events. The book of Jonah is full of fascinating literary features. It contains humour, satire and irony. The basic plot is quite simple to follow but there are several complex interwoven themes that are developed in the course of four short chapters. The book starts with God giving Jonah a prophetic assignment. God tells Jonah to get up and go to Nineveh, a very large, important city in the heart of the nation of Assyria. He is to go there in order to tell the inhabitants that God is greatly displeased by their evil behaviour and that he intends to judge them for this. The people of Nineveh were really wicked! They would sometimes cut off the noses and ears of their prisoners of war to mark them out for life; they worshiped at pagan temples and sacrificed their children. They certainly did not worship God. Jonah's task was no easy one. Nineveh was over 500 miles from Jonah's homeland and the Assyrians were the enemies of Israel. Jonah finds the proposal from God abhorrent – he finds it unbelievable that God would offer the chance of repentance to this evil pagan nation! So instead of heading to Nineveh, Jonah runs as fast as he can in the opposite direction, ending up in the seaside town of Joppa. He plans to get on a ship and sail to Tarshish, in a naive attempt to escape from God. God called him to “get up!” but Jonah does exactly the opposite and “goes down” to Joppa! Jonah hands over his cash and secures a place on board a ship heading for Tarshish. However, God has other plans and sends a great storm that batters the ship so hard that the sailors are afraid they will all die. They desperately throw cargo overboard as Jonah sleeps below deck, seemingly oblivious to their plight. Each sailor calls out to his own pagan god for help. Finally, in desperation, the captain goes down to Jonah to ask him to call out to his God for help. The other sailors cast lots to try to establish who on board has brought this trouble upon them. And the lot falls on Jonah. Realising that he's been discovered, Jonah confesses all and tells the men that he is trying to run away from God, the Lord God of heaven. The sailors are absolutely terrified and ask Jonah what they should do. Jonah asks them to throw him overboard because he now realizes his foolishness and he sees the hand of God in the storm. The sailors, however, are reluctant to do this, perhaps having compassion on Jonah, or perhaps fearing what God might do to them if they take his life in this way. They try as hard as they can to avoid having to throw him overboard. Finally, when the storm has reached its peak they cry out to God for forgiveness before throwing him into the sea. The sea becomes immediately calm and these hardened pagan sailors worship God in fear and trembling. Meanwhile, Jonah is sinking further down, deep into the sea, where he is swallowed by a giant fish, sent by God for this very purpose. Chapter 2 contains a poetic prayer that Jonah prays from inside the giant fish. Jonah thanks God for saving his life although, interestingly, he does not spare any thought for the safety of the sailors. Little does he know that God has extended compassion and grace to them, rescuing them from their futile idolatry. God arranges for the fish to vomit Jonah up onto dry land and he is unceremoniously spat out onto the beach. In chapter 3 God repeats the same prophetic call to Jonah and he commands him to get up and go to Nineveh. This time Jonah obeys! The city of Nineveh was huge and Jonah walks a full day into the city before preaching his short message: “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned”. Much to Jonah's disgust and horror, the inhabitants of Nineveh, from the smallest to the greatest, respond to the message from God. They believe in God, fasting, and repenting of their evil deeds. Even the King dresses himself in sackcloth and sits in ashes! A city-wide decree is issued that everyone should repent and humble themselves and ask God for forgiveness. Even the animals are included! God sees this incredible response of repentance and shows his compassion and steadfast love to the people of Nineveh, turning away from his plans to destroy them. All of this makes Jonah incredibly angry. He finds it absolutely unacceptable that God would forgive the people of this pagan nation. He cannot comprehend that God's mercy and love would extend to nations beyond Israel. In fact he is so outraged that he declares to God that he would rather die than see this city forgiven. God simply asks him: “have you any right to be angry?” Jonah goes out of the city, still outraged, and waits to see what will happen. He still hopes that Nineveh might be destroyed after all. God provides a plant that grows quickly over Jonah's head, giving him much-needed shelter from the heat of the sun. Jonah thinks this is wonderful, but by dawn the next day the plant withers away, attacked by a divinely appointed worm. When the sun beats down harshly and the east wind blows on Jonah, he gets very angry again and declares that he would rather be dead than put up with the injustice of the plant having been taken from him. The book closes with God pointing out to Jonah that he has no right to complain about the destruction of the plant because he did not make it or care for it, or even deserve it. In contrast, God has every right to care deeply about the 120,000 people living in Nineveh and all the animals, whom he created and cares for. The overriding theme in the book of Jonah is the compassion of God and his steadfast love for all people. God goes to incredible lengths to get his message out to the nations, including those who do not know him. Jonah's disregard for the people of Nineveh stands in stark contrast to God's compassion on the pagan sailors, the people of Nineveh and Jonah himself. Throughout the book, Jonah demonstrates a distinct tendency towards self-centredness and hypocrisy. This was intended to be a lesson to the original readers of the book. God never wanted his chosen people, Israel, to become self-centred, self-serving and inward-looking. Israel was indeed chosen by God, but not because of any worth of their own, but only because of grace. They were chosen to be God's instrument through which salvation would come to all the nations. Throughout the book we also see God's sovereign purposes being carried out. God chooses Jonah, a very fallible human being, to take his message where it needs to go. When Jonah does not obey God, and even when he runs away from God, God does not give up on him or reject him. He patiently teaches Jonah and continues to use him, despite his faults, in order to accomplish his purposes. This perhaps can give us hope too. God can and will use us to accomplish his purposes, even when we make mistakes. We may have some learning to do first and God is patient and compassionate! We would do well to pay attention to Jonah's experience, and learn that it is better to obey the first time that God asks you to do something, even when it seems like a very challenging thing to do! We can also learn from the dramatic response of the people of Nineveh to God's message. Jonah did not preach a long, eloquent, all-singing-all-dancing message when he reached Nineveh. His message was very simple but it produced huge results. We should remember that the Word of God is living and active and very powerful. God promises that his words will not return to him empty but will accomplish everything he has intended them to do (Isaiah 55:11). This should give us confidence that we can declare God's message simply, not needing to soften, embellish or alter it in any way to make it more palatable to those who need to hear it. We also learn from Jonah that God always responds to genuine repentance. He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love! There is a symbolic foreshadowing of Jesus in the life of Jonah. Jesus is the greater Jonah who also descended to the depths of the earth (in the grave) for three days, only to rise again in order to bring salvation to all people, both Jews and Gentiles. Jesus himself draws attention to this point in Matthew chapter 12. The people of Nineveh foreshadow the great number of Gentiles who will repent and be saved when they hear God's message. We might need to ask ourselves whether there is any person or people whom we have foolishly considered to be beyond the reach of God. Is there any way in which we are being like Jonah, gladly accepting God's compassion and grace but wanting to keep it for ourselves? Have we placed limits on what we think God can do? Or have we become too comfortable in our own secure position, forgetting God's heart of compassion for those who are lost without him? And there are actually some pretty recognisable under-the-radar strategies that qualify as micro-flirting, which is what we're going to shed light on today. How exactly does one micro-flirt then? Why do shy people tend to veer towards a micro-flirting approach then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! My Story Talk 20 Ministry at Basingstoke 1968-78 Part 5 Welcome to Talk 20 in our series where I'm reflecting on God's goodness to me throughout my life. Last time I was telling you how God was clearly blessing my trips abroad, to Switzeralnd, France, Belgium and the USA, and, thanks entirely to the gift that God had given me, my teaching was in increasingly great demand both at home and overseas. But how did all this fit in with my responsibilities as the pastor of the church in Basingstoke? The Lord showed me that the answer lay in two things – writing and team ministry. Writing ministry Today, of course, it's relatively easy to communicate with people all over the world by a variety of options available through the internet. But before the internet, apart from radio and television, speaking on which was not readily available, Christian literature was the main means of communicating with potentially thousands of people. What you write can travel further than you can. One example of this was Andy Anstey, a Canadian who became a student at Mattersey during the early years of my principalship. He told me that he had been baptised in the Spirit in a university library in Canada as a result of reading my book, The Dynamic Difference. I have never been to Canada, but one of my books had found its way there. It had started as a booklet I wrote for the Students' Pentecostal Fellowship in 1971, Be Filled with the Spirit. Jim Hall had used it on my first trip to Illinois and persuaded me to expand it, as a result of which Receive Power was published in 1974 in time for my second trip to the States. It was finally published in 1978 by Gospel Publishing House, Springfield MO, under the title, The Dynamic Difference. I was also writing articles for magazines like Redemption Tidings and Youth Aflame, the AoG youth magazine. At Basingstoke I had given a series of Bible studies on the Fundamental Truths of Assemblies of God, and I asked Vernon Ralphs, the editor of Youth Aflame, if he would like me to write a series of articles on the subject. Those articles were eventually published by Peniel Press as a book under the title, Know the Truth, in 1976, and with the cooperation of the publisher, I was able to give a free copy to every AoG minister at the General Conference that year. And something similar happened with another series of articles I wrote for Youth Aflame. At Colchester I had duplicated a series of short talks for young people who had just given their lives to Jesus and these were eventually published as a book in 1977 under the title How to Live for Jesus. Both these books are still being used, over fifty years later, by a number of churches today, though Know the Truth is now published under the title You'd Better Believe It. It has been translated into several languages including German, French, Italian, Finnish, Spanish, Urdu, and Nepalese. Another publication that is still being used widely around the world is the distance learning course I wrote on the Major Prophets for the International Correspondence Institute in Brussels under the title Themes from the Prophets. I have already mentioned that this was a subject I was lecturing on in Kenley Bible College and I already had many pages of lecture notes that I had produced and duplicated for the students. So when Dr George Flattery, the brother of Warren and founder and director of ICI, asked me if I would be willing to write the course, I was happy to do so. This involved several visits to Brussels, each of which lasted for two weeks, where I could get on with writing the course undistracted. It was also a great opportunity to meet other Pentecostal educators from around the world, including the renowned New Testament scholar, Professor Gordon Fee who was writing the course on 1 Corinthians and became a good friend. So I will always be grateful for the opportunity I was given to be a part of ICI, but especially for the induction teaching they offered to all their course writers, which included the requirement to read The Art of Readable Writing by Rudolf Flesch the basic message of which, as I remember it, was to write as you speak, rather than writing in the academic style you were required to use at school or university. Other things Flesch recommended were, wherever possible, to use short words rather than long ones, personal names rather than pronouns, the active voice rather than the passive, and short sentences rather than long ones – which prompts me to close this sentence before it gets any longer! So, to summarise, I had realised that by using literature a person's ministry could be extended far beyond their time and ability to travel. But that in itself did not solve the problem of reconciling what I perceived to be my obligations to the church where I was pastor with the travelling ministry the Lord was clearly opening up for me. And, as I was praying about this, he answered my question by whispering into my heart the word Antioch. Of course, I knew that Antioch was the place where the disciples were first called Christians (Acts 11:26), but at first I couldn't see how it was relevant to my problem, so I decided to turn to Acts to see if I could find the answer. And I did. The answer was the development of team ministry. Developing Team Ministry The church at Antioch was started by believers who had been scattered as a result of the persecution of the church that took place after the stoning of Stephen. Some of them went to Antioch spreading the word to both Jews and gentiles and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. When the apostles at Jerusalem heard about this they sent Barnabas to take care of the work, and even more people became Christians. Realising that he needed help, he went to Tarsus to find Paul and brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught great numbers of people. From this it is clear that they were both, to say the least, key people in the church. And yet in Acts 13 we are told that the Holy Spirit sent them away from the church for a time in order to pioneer churches in other countries. The reason they were able to do this and, on their return, find that the church was still strong, was because they were not the only leaders in the church. Acts 13:1 talks of three others at Antioch who were prophets and teachers. As I read about this it became obvious to me that this was the Lord's answer to my question. If I was to continue travelling we would need other leaders in the church. So I started on a detailed study of what the New Testament has to say about the leadership of the local church, and I discovered that churches were led by a team of elders, overseers, or pastors, and as I investigated the passages where these are mentioned I saw very clearly that these were all interchangeable terms. In the New Testament the elders were the pastors. They were the ones who were the shepherds of the flock and had the responsibility of watching over, or overseeing it. I have gone into this in detail in my book, Body Builders, and so there is no need to repeat it here. All I need to say is that I came to the conclusion that the traditional system of having just one person as the church leader really has no biblical basis and that team leadership must be the way forward. I have already mentioned how the pastor in East Saint Louis had come to the same conclusion and it soon became apparent that this was something the Lord was saying to many different leaders around the world. I preached on this in the Home Missions Conference at Weymouth in 1973 and was pleasantly surprised that I was not the only one to hold this view. But where were these new leaders for our church in Basingstoke to come from? The answer was simple. We already had them, but they had never been recognised. There were two men, David Moncaster and Keith Davidson, who, I felt, both met the biblical qualifications mentioned in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. But before I asked the church to appoint them, I spent several weeks teaching about the principles of church leadership. If we are going to persuade people to break away from long held traditions it is vital that we show them very clearly that what we are proposing is in line with scripture. I have already mentioned that Bill Mitchell had already been recognised as an elder in the church before I came. But after my teaching on the biblical qualifications of elders he graciously came to me and said that in the light of what I had taught he thought he was probably a deacon rather than an elder and offered to resign. I told him that I thought he was probably right, but that, as his resignation might be misunderstood by some of the members, I would prefer him to remain as an elder, nominally at least, as long as we both understood that this was not really his role. And to this he readily agreed. So for the final few years of my time in Basingstoke the church was led by a team which we referred to as the pastoral oversight, Willaim Kay being added to the team a little later. The church continued to grow under this system of leadership, and when the Lord moved me on to Mattersey the church was in safe hands. The call to the Bible College I have already mentioned that in 1970 I started as a visiting lecturer at Kenley Bible College. On one of my visits in January 1972 I learned that John Phillips, who was a full time residential tutor at Kenley would be leaving, and as I was travelling home that evening, I was wondering who might be chosen to replace him. It would surely be someone who was already teaching at the college and I was thinking through the names in the college prospectus when I came to my own name. But I quickly dismissed the thought as I was sure that I would be considered too young for such a responsible position. And anyway, God had called me to build a big church in Basingstoke, hadn't he? But no sooner had I thought this than I felt a check in my spirit and said, But of course, Lord, I'll do whatever you want me to do. But if you ever do want me to leave Basingstoke I will need very clear guidance on the matter. You may remember the struggle I had when we first moved to Basingstoke and how for some months I wondered if we had done the right thing. I didn't want a repetition of that. But now, having prayed that prayer, I tried to put the matter out of my mind. This turned out to be harder than expected and that very night, some time between 1:00 and 2:00, on Tuesday 25th January, I woke up with a burning conviction that I was going to live at the Bible College. I tried to shake it off, but it would not go away, so I went downstairs to pray. What I said to the Lord went something like this: Lord, you know I need my sleep, so if this is of you, and you want me to go to the college, would you please tell me quickly? And he did! As I opened my King James Bible, it fell open at 2 Chronicles 34:22. I could hardly believe my eyes. It contained the words dwelt… at the college. With the exception of the parallel verse in 2 Kings 22:14, this is the only reference to the word college in the whole Bible. This had to be more than coincidence. I had asked the Lord to tell me quickly, and he did. But, rather like Moses in Exodus 3 and 4, I found myself making excuses like, I've only been in Basingstoke for four years, and, They wouldn't choose me. I'm too young. I don't have enough experience etc. But just as God had an answer for every objection Moses made, he had an answer for mine too. For each objection I made he led me directly to a Bible passage that answered it. As a result I was entirely convinced that I was going to live at the College. I didn't know when but thought that it might be in September after John Phillips had left. In fact it was five or six years later! I have discovered that one of the hardest things in understanding the will of God is his timing. I have also discovered that God seems to give us the clearest guidance when he knows that there is trouble ahead! It's only the certainty that we are in his will that will sustain us through trials and difficulties and tests to our faith. And there were to be plenty of those before we got to Mattersey! But that's something for our next talk.

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky - Part 1 chapter 6, narrated by Isaac BirchallSubscribe on YT or Join the Book Club on Patreon and support me as an independent creator :Dhttps://ko-fi.com/theessentialreadshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfOFfvo05ElM96CmfsGsu3g/joinSUMMARY: The narrator describes how Raskolnikov first came the the idea of killing Alyona Ivanovna. He developed a strong hatred of the woman from the first sight of her. Soon afterwards, in a bar, he heard another person talking about how it would be a perfect crime, as no one would miss her, and because so many people owe her money, many lives would actually be saved by her death. Theses ideas rattled around in Raskolnikov's head and he was shocked by hearing the idea uttered by someone else. He became sure that it was his duty to end the life of the old woman. At home, Raskolnikov falls into a deep sleep and doesn't wake until the following evening. Realising that it is already 6 o'clock, he jumps out of bed and makes his preparations for the crime. He sews a loop into the armpit of his jacket to hold an axe, and retrieves his fake "pledge" to give to Alyona Ivanovna. He heads downstairs and is still unsure about commiting the crime, but when he finds an axe in the caretaker's shed, he deems it fate. He goes to the woman's apartment, and at 7:30 he is at her door, ringing the bell...SEO Stuff that I don't want to do lol...Welcome to this narration of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's masterpiece, bringing you another chapter of this incredible literary classic. In a wide-ranging interview, Andrew Doyle talks to Claire Fox about his new book, The End of Woke and why there is much still to be done to defend freedom. Andrew notes that while some things have shifted in recent months – from the Cass Review and the UK Supreme Court judgement on the meaning of ‘sex' in the Equality Act to the start of Donald Trump's second presidential term – it doesn't mean that our problems are over. The ‘new puritans' he identified in his previous book are still very much there and clinging on to their power and influence. It's now five years since the death of George Floyd and the hysteria around Black Lives Matter. Claire and Andrew reflect on what the hell happened and the dangers that arise from a re-racialisation of society. They also look at how identity politics and racial thinking has led to a white grievance culture and a tit-for-tat outlook, which Andrew argues has more to do with revenge than with promoting a liberal society. Above all, the conversation focuses on the continued importance of the fight for free speech, even for 'cosplay' rebels like Irish rappers Kneecap. And they tackle the way in which woke has undermined the search for truth: when even something as common sense as biological sex is called into question, then anything goes – and society suffers.

While somewhat insignificant your thread has a role to play as a relative to the threads it lies next too. This feels like an important conversation to have had - as two white women without indigenous heritage - it feels uncomfortable to have, and we will forever be learning, but Hilary (a 9th generation settler in the United States) begins the process of unpacking what it means to be in right relationship with the people & place that we each call home - pushing past the burden of white fragility to build pathways of robust healing & reconnection to our landscapes - to reconciliation with first peoples. She shares what it means to create ancestral alters & how to connect with these elders who's stories she tells us, are still unfolding. She reminds us that while the work we have to do is exceptionally confronting, grief won't kill us & that the time to heal in the bosom of natural landscapes is now."Elders are always identified by the community, never by the individual - they are usually unwilling but always shows up for the community, is wise, is generous, is funny, is humble, Our communities can guide us to where the elders are."Loved this? Logicalis, the leading global technology service provider, has released its annual CIO Report, which reveals that 95% of CIOs are actively investing in technology to create new revenue streams within the next 12 months. According to the report - which surveyed 1,000 CIOs from across the globe, including Ireland - the CIO role is no longer focused on enablement but on shaping business strategy and driving value, with nearly all CIOs (94%) regularly reporting to the board on return on investment (ROI). This expanded mandate is heightened by the rapid emergence of new technologies. The report found that almost all organisations are exploring how next-generation technologies can specifically support commercial growth. This trend shows no sign of slowing, with Artificial Intelligence (AI - 95%), machine learning capabilities (93%), and Internet of Things (IoT - 89%) initiatives among the most widely adopted emerging technologies over the past 12 months. Realising value from these investments remains a challenge with 85% of CIOs reporting a growing pressure for technology to demonstrate tangible business impact and many (64%) acknowledging that their next-generation technology investments have yet to deliver anticipated returns. As the gap between balancing investments and realised value intensifies, CIOs remain optimistic about the potential of these technologies. Still, most tech leaders (93%) continue to juggle limited time and resources to ensure better business outcomes. As CIOs consider innovations that support future growth, they must continue to navigate business-critical objectives. Despite unprecedented spending on security solutions, 88% experienced cybersecurity incidents in the last 12 months last year, with 43% enduring multiple breaches raising questions about the effectiveness of security spending. One area where they are beginning to see tangible financial results is through the integration of environmental technologies. Nine in ten (91%) CIOs have realised direct commercial benefits, and over half (53%) report these as significant. With a good track record, it is no surprise that those investing in environmental sustainability initiatives have risen from 92% in 2023 to 95% over the past 12 months. On this year's report, Bob Bailkoski, Global CEO of Logicalis Group, said: "For almost every business, technology has become the primary engine of innovation, growth and resilience. With this dependence comes a new expectation of CIOs - they're no longer just enablers of business strategy but drivers of commercial success. Whether through maintaining a keener focus on ROI from next-generation technologies, optimising security spending or maximising the financial benefits of sustainability initiatives, technology leaders need to seek out the right investments and partnerships that can help them deliver on their business goals." While most CIOs are confident that their IT spending is yielding a return, many (91%) believe there is room for improvement. As challenges around complexity, resources and performance visibility remain, the report highlights the importance of fostering strong technology partnerships to help CIOs meet this changing landscape, alleviate pressures and unlock value. Additional findings on innovation 94% agree the CIO role is becoming a key part of shaping business strategy and direction 94% report their organisation is exploring how next-generation technology can support their commercial growth 94% of CIOs are actively seeking opportunities to incorporate AI into their business, compared to 89% last year 86% report growing pressure within their organisation to ensure ROI from AI Additional findings on sustainability 95% say their organisation is increasing their investment in environmental sustainability initiatives and/or technologies, compared to 92% last year 94% think IT is core to the success of their organisation's sustainability goals, compared to 93% last year 93% report their organisation se...

For 41 years, I had no idea I was autistic. I just thought life was harder for me than it was for everyone else. I didn't see myself in my son's autism diagnosis. But when my daughter's school told me she was showing autistic traits, I had a moment that changed everything—she's just like me.And suddenly, my entire life made sense. This episode is for every late-diagnosed parent who only started questioning their own neurodivergence because of their child. It's for those of us parenting kids who are wired like us—the ones who see our struggles mirrored back in them, the ones trying to break cycles while still figuring ourselves out.In this episode, I talk about:✨ The moment I realized I was autistic because of my daughter✨ The struggles of parenting when you are also neurodivergent✨ The absolute chaos of ADHD x ADHD executive dysfunction✨ Why, despite the challenges, raising neurodivergent kids as a neurodivergent parent is actually kind of beautifulIf you've ever thought “I see myself in my child”—this one's for you.
Guy MacGillivray on Sugar and Mental Health – Our Most Downloaded Episode Ever! This episode is a game-changer! Our conversation with Guy MacGillivray has become the top episode of all time—and for good reason.Guy is a psychologist and social worker in Port Lincoln, a devoted father of three, and a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. But his journey into understanding sugar and mental health started with a personal revelation: he was using sugar to medicate stress in his life.Realising this, he made a change—cutting back on sugar, adjusting his morning routine, and practising gratitude for family, friends and meditative prayer. He quickly noticed the impact on not just his weight but his mental clarity and overall well-being.Guy poses a powerful question:"Are you a leaver or a finisher?"Can you stop at one scoop of ice cream, or do you finish the whole tub?For Guy, the only way forward was utterly removing sugar from his diet. And he believes you can do it, too.Beyond his journey, Guy's work is deeply impactful. He supports people with disabilities and their families to navigate housing, employment, and the NDIS system—helping them overcome barriers and live their best lives.Thank you, Guy, for making a difference in Port Lincoln and beyond!
Welcome back to part 2 of my conversation with the incredible Mark Allen! Dubbed the greatest endurance athlete of all time by ESPN, Mark is sharing the secrets behind his amazing results. Today, in particular, we’re focusing on mindset and motivation. If you haven’t heard part 1 yet, I highly recommend you do that first so you don’t miss any of the wisdom he shares. Mindset is a big part of triathlon training and races. Whether you’re gearing up for a major workout or standing at the start line, the thoughts running through your mind greatly impact your performance. He shares the moment from his first triathlon when he realised what a difference they made. When a competitor passed him, he felt the doubt creep in, his body tightened up and everything started to feel harder. Taking a moment to clear his mind he was able to acknowledge there was still plenty of time to retake his positon. This allowed him to regain his stride and overtake the competitor, securing fourth place amongst legends like Dave Scott and Scott Molina. A lot of people use affirmations to fight the doubt, and while it helped for training, Mark found they felt hollow when the fatigue of raceday sets in. Instead, quieting your mind reduces anxiety and allows you to give your best. It’s also a great tool outside of racing. Whether it’s an intense workout or one of life’s difficult moments, the ability to pause and find that quiet is invaluable. Realising it’s okay to let certain tasks wait if a larger priority needs attention helps in balancing life and triathlons. We then pivoted to an important aspect of training—periodisation. Mark suggests training should be broken down into manageable segments, so you can avoid risk of becoming overwhelmed. Many athletes make the mistake of constant training without rest, which can lead to physical and mental fatigue. But Mark emphasises the importance of recognising and addressing feelings of burnout or self-doubt. Sometimes a lack of motivation might be a signal to rest or recalibrate your goals. This is particularly important for age groupers juggling various commitments alongside their training. It’s about consistency and realistic goal-setting—stretching just beyond your comfort zone to discover what you’re truly capable of. Finally Mark shares how the lessons learned in triathlon can be applied to life. Accepting that achieving big goals often takes longer and requires more energy than anticipated can prevent burnout. And a mindset of patience and learning will make the journey rewarding, regardless of the outcome. Miriam Lancewood is an adventurer, author, and modern-day nomad who chose an extraordinary path far removed from the comforts of modern life. In 2010, Miriam and her husband Peter left civilisation behind, venturing into the high mountains of New Zealand with nothing but a backpack, a bow and arrow, and a tent. Together with Peter, she has roamed the wilderness of Europe, braved personal challenges like Peter's battle with kidney failure, and settled into an off-grid cottage in Bulgaria. While Peter tends the land, Miriam embarks on solo expeditions, most recently exploring the remote regions of the Himalayas, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Miriam is also a celebrated author, with her international bestseller Woman in the Wilderness captivating readers across the globe. Her sequel, Wild at Heart, and her most recent release, Wilder Journeys, showcase her incredible adventures and reflections on nature connection in the modern world. The word “journey” might get a bit overused when speaking about business, but there truly is no better word for it. A business idea is one tiny part of the story. Besides the fact that the business idea itself will likely take many different forms along the way, and that you’re never ever done when tackling something like building a business for yourself, you evolve so much as a person along the way. If that isn’t a hell of a journey, I don’t know what is. Kathryn McGarvey knows all about this particular expedition, she’s in the business of audience insights today, and it’s one of a few businesses she’s learnt, grown, languished and flourished within – as I’m sure you can relate to. In sharing her business building story you’ll hear about: Realising you’ve become unemployable Finding the business within the business Why the term “journey” for the experience of business is fundamental Building as you go The dark revenue moments And finding connection as a solopreneur Connect with Kathryn on LinkedIn Check out the NosyHQ Website And don’t forget to follow Unemployed & Afraid on IG , TikTok and LinkedIn Subscribe to the U&A Substack Join our Facebook Group And show your support for this independent podcast and small business by shouting your host a cuppa at buymeacoffee.com/unemployedpod You can reach your host on email kim@unemployedandafraid.com.au on IG on LinkedIn or via unemployedandafraid.com.auSupport the show by shouting me a cuppa (or 2): https://www.buymeacoffee.com/unemployedpodSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we have the wonderful James Gwinett on the pod! James is nine years alcohol free this year and we think it's safe to say he's definitely made the most of his sobriety. In his twenties, James was a semi-professional rugby player until he sustained a serious neck injury at 29. Realising that this had ended his rugby career, he fell into a depression which pushed his drinking into a place where he eventually felt like enough was enough and he had to change his life. He's now an author, his book 'Ready, Set, Life: A Story Of Redemption And The Lessons Learned' came out last year but even more importantly than that, he's also a Dad! Well it was lovely having James on the pod, he's a really inspiring guy and we know you're going to love listening to his episode with us. About your host Aleks: Aleks Chojnacka has been on a health journey for many years, learning so much along the way. At a young age, she experienced debilitating fatigue but was unable to solve it through a Western medicine approach. Eventually, she turned to alternative methods and experienced a transformative shift in her health. By discovering the power of the mind, body, and spirit connection through different tools and practices, she was able to regulate her nervous system and step back into the most energized version of herself. Knowing that so many others have had similar struggles, Aleks pursued credentials in health coaching and breathwork and started her own wellness studio. Detox House provides people with what Aleks found to be the MOST effective tools in her own healing–the trifecta of saunas, cold plunges, and breathwork. Her end goal is to empower individuals to get rid of the things that no longer serve them, whether a difficult mindset or physical ailment, and step back into their truest selves so they can live their most joyful lives. Aleks' dedication to sharing these life-giving practices establishes Detox House as a community marked by positivity and transformation.
