Write On: Advice for Pharmacist Authors with Dan Krinsky (Pharmacist Authors Series)

Pharmacist's Voice

In this episode of The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast, I talk with Ohio pharmacist Dan Krinsky about writing, co-authoring, and editing. This is Episode 22 in the Pharmacist Authors Series. Unlike most episodes in the series, our conversation does not focus on one specific book. Dan has written and edited many types of professional content, including continuing education and journal articles, newsletters, patient education materials, business proposals, and pharmacy reference resources. Dan first appeared on the podcast in Episode 133, when we discussed his pharmacy career and pharmacogenomics. This time, writing gets the spotlight. Dan shares practical advice for pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy professors who want to begin writing or expand their writing experience. Dan's contact information, website, and social media links  Dan Krinsky BS, MS, RPh, FAPhA on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan-krinsky-bs-ms-rph-fapha-a8537a/  Dan's email dkrinsky@educare-4u.com  EduCare4U, LLC website https://www.educare-4u.com  PGx101, LLC on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/pgx101  The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast Episode 133 featuring Dan Krinsky About Dan Krinsky B.S., M.S., R.Ph., FAPhA (July 2026) Dan is business owner, educator, entrepreneur and pharmacist who is passionate about advancing patient care and the pharmacy profession.  He owns 2 businesses:  EduCare4U, LLC, (focused on education and patient care) and PGx101, LLC (focused on pharmacogenomics education and practice implementation).  Mr. Krinsky is currently a Professor at the LECOM School of Pharmacy, serving as a lecturer, committee member, and student advisor.  He is a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association and an active member of the Medication Management Special Interest Group.  Other ventures include working with providers to optimize patients' drug therapy; professional writing; creation of certificate training programs, and new business development.  Mr. Krinsky is Editor-in-Chief and Section Editor for the American Pharmacists Association publication 'Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs:  An Interactive Approach to Self-Care.' Mr. Krinsky's areas of expertise include community pharmacy practice, drug information, patient counseling and education, OTCs, natural products, pharmacogenomics, and developing and implementing medication therapy and disease state management programs.  His primary professional goal is to 'pay it forward', finding ways to make the profession better for the next generation of pharmacists.     Questions and abbreviated answers from our conversation How did writing become part of your professional life? Dan's first major writing project was his master's thesis in pharmacokinetics. Writing did not come naturally at first, but he discovered that he enjoyed gathering information and turning it into something useful for an audience. How can someone decide whether writing is right for them? Start with a topic you care about. Identify the audience, look for gaps in available information, and find a mentor or support network. You do not need to work alone. Should new writers start small or go directly to writing a book? Dan recommends beginning with an article, newsletter, or another smaller project when possible. Smaller projects provide quicker feedback and help writers build skills and confidence. Someone who wants to start with a book should narrow the topic, identify the audience, create an outline, set deadlines, and seek feedback early. What has Dan written? His work includes newsletters, business proposals, patient advisory leaflets, consumer health information, journal and continuing education articles, and two co-authored point-of-care resources: the Natural Therapeutics Pocket Guide and the Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook. He has also contributed to multiple editions of APhA's Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs as an author and editor. How are writing, co-authoring, and editing different? An author creates the content. Co-authors share responsibility and need clear roles, flexibility, and communication. An editor improves accuracy, organization, clarity, and usefulness while protecting the author's voice. When should an author involve an editor? As early as possible. An editor can help shape the audience, scope, outline, organization, and flow before the author invests months in the wrong direction. Early feedback is usually easier to handle than dozens of changes at the end. How can someone find a useful topic? Pay attention to recurring patient questions, conversations, media claims, and gaps in health information. The final product does not need to be a book. It could be an article, handout, script, social media post, or educational program. What keeps people from starting? Dan identifies three common barriers: waiting to become "the expert," fear of criticism, and lack of structure. Know what you know, recognize what you do not know, and build a network that can help fill the gaps. How can pharmacists develop a writing habit? Schedule writing time, set specific goals, work backward from deadlines, and use an accountability partner. A detailed outline makes a large project feel more manageable. Where can beginners find legitimate writing opportunities? Consider professional associations, colleges of pharmacy, health systems, community pharmacies, continuing education companies, consumer health websites, and digital health companies. Build a portfolio with writing samples, areas of expertise, testimonials, and other communication experience. How long should someone give writing before deciding it is not for them? There is no single timeline. A newsletter article may take a month; a book may take 12 to 18 months. Set realistic deadlines for each project, start small, and give yourself time to learn. What is Dan's final advice for aspiring authors? Find a mentor, be patient, expect revisions, learn from feedback, and enjoy the process. Writing may not be the right path for everyone, but it can be a meaningful way to educate patients, serve the profession, and create new opportunities. 3 Hard Truths Every Promoted Leader Must Face

A New Direction

3 Hard Truths for a Leadership Mindset Shift Are you struggling to transition from a high-performing technical expert to an effective people manager? On the next live episode of A New Direction, best-selling author Steven Riddle joins us for Part 2 of our deep dive into his book, Falling into Leadership. Join us as we tackle the critical leadership mindset shift required when stepping into executive roles. Many new managers fall into the trap of leading through the exact technical skills that got them promoted, failing to realize that team management and executive growth require an entirely different playbook. One of the biggest hurdles in leadership development is mastering difficult conversations in leadership. Why do founders and executives endlessly rehearse tough performance reviews or confrontational talks in their head, only to avoid having them altogether? Steven exposes how surface-level communication erodes trust and why moving toward active listening and practical empathy is essential for creating psychological safety. By understanding the nuance between empathy, sympathy, and apathy, leaders can stop micromanaging and start asking powerful questions that build real engagement and clarity. As you climb the organizational ladder, executive loneliness becomes an unmistakable reality. The higher you advance, the more isolated decision-making feels, making emotional intelligence and self-awareness non-negotiable tools for survival. We discuss how resilient leadership helps senior executives navigate uncertainty, adapt to constant workplace change, and lead with steady character rather than relying on sheer force of personality. True adaptability isn’t about avoiding stress; it's about maintaining presence under pressure so you can guide your team through disruption without getting knocked off center. Ultimately, the leadership mindset shift is from task-based management to sustainable leadership requires mastering effective delegation and structuring high-impact 1-on-1 meetings that foster team accountability. Strong organizational culture isn’t built top-down through rigid policy; it is forged daily through authentic connection, shared values, and mutual respect. Tune in to New Direction, to learn how to focus on the human inputs that drive high performance and leave behind a lasting leadership legacy. Steve Riddle's book, “Falling Into Leadership: How Leaders Emerge, Grow and Lead With Purpose” is a play by play guide into coaching a new leader. In Steve Riddle's approach we are introduced to a new emerging leader in Sally who is open and willing to change as a leader, but is uncertain of the steps. In 8 sessions Steve Riddle walks us through his process of coaching that helps you have a Leadership Mindset Shift to help you go from promoted to great. Steve Riddle has a very organized approach that starts with focusing on the leader's own self-awareness. His big push is if that self-awareness is only the beginning, but without it, you will never get to the next steps of growth. His methodology of using questions to push the client are both refreshing and eye opening for all of us.  And that leadership mindset shift is fundamentally necessary for growth. Behind the curtain he takes through the importance of emotional intelligence, communication, adaptability, resilience, and what true accountability looks like. He emphasizes the importance of the leaders role of empowering, inspiring, and influencing those the leader leads, and helps us recognize that as a leader our responsibility is to leave a legacy of leaders in our employees. Packed with tons of insights and thought provoking questions, and leadership mindset shifts, the book, in my opinion is using the case of Sally to take a closer look at ourself. Some of our dysfunctional mindsets, becoming more self-aware and becoming the leader we had always hoped we would become. Contact our friends Linda Craft Team at www.LindaCraft.com ABOUT YOUR HOST Meet Jay Izso Executive Performance Coach  |  Host of A New Direction Every week on A New Direction, I sit down with CEOs, founders, and the researchers behind the science of leadership performance. The conversations go deep. We talk about the decisions that built companies, the mistakes that nearly destroyed them, and the personal breakthroughs that changed everything. But here's what most people don't know about me: the show is an extension of the work I do every day with executives behind closed doors. Who I Am I'm an Executive Performance Coach. I work with CEOs and founders of $5M-$50M companies who have hit a wall they can't explain. The marketing looks fine. The team is capable. The market is there. But the business won't move. The problem, almost every time, is the person running it. I find the personal behavioral patterns that are driving the business dysfunction. Then I help the CEO disrupt those patterns so the company can grow. That's it. No motivational platitudes. No vision boards. Diagnostics, intervention, results. Where This Comes From My approach comes from two places most coaches never set foot in. The farm. I grew up as a farmhand in Ithaca, Nebraska—population 100. I started working at nine years old. By the time I left for college, I'd spent a decade learning that you can't cheat the harvest, pain is part of the job, and the work has to get done whether you feel like it or not. I was fourteen the first time I had to castrate boars. Nobody was going to do it for me. That lesson never left: sometimes you have to do things afraid. The forensic psychology unit. In graduate school at Washington State University, I trained under Dr. Thomas Brigham—co-author of the Handbook of Applied Behavior Analysis—in a human behavior lab focused on real-world problems. I then served in a Clinical Psych II role at Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake, Washington, a forensic setting where I conducted psychological evaluations of individuals charged with the most serious criminal offenses. Sixteen months assessing human behavior at its most extreme taught me how to cut through defenses, identify what's really driving someone's decisions, and see what they can't see in themselves.

Wizards of the Coast has revealed its plans for the future of Dungeons & Dragons, and apparently the strategy is simple: fix D&D Beyond, return to Gen Con, outsource adventures to people who know what they are doing, cross over with World of Warcraft, and traumatize a convention hall full of children with a Dark Sun trailer featuring a freshly removed spine. Tyler attended the secret briefing and emerged with five pages of notes, several enormous announcements, and absolutely no idea what D&D Icons are. So prepare yourselves for new books, old settings, digital upgrades, live puppies, and enough upcoming content to make your wallet roll a death save. EnWorld: President of WotC Steps Down Forbidden Lands (affiliate link) Show Notes Wizards of the Coast has revealed its roadmap for Dungeons & Dragons through 2027, and Tyler is here to unload everything he learned during an embargoed presentation. We begin at Gen Con, which Wizards plans to turn into the recurring home for its annual D&D announcements. There will be a massive convention presence, live events, streams, adoptable puppies, and something called D&D Icons. Everyone involved seems extremely excited about Icons. Unfortunately, nobody appears capable of explaining what they actually are. D&D Beyond is also getting a substantial overhaul. Wizards plans to introduce tools for finding groups, allow local game stores to advertise events, and form an official partnership with StartPlaying. The mobile app is being redesigned, the character builder and rules engine are being rebuilt, and new DM tools, improved search, and campaign-creation features are somewhere on the horizon. Several details remain vague, partly because the presentation's prerecorded D&D Beyond video stopped working halfway through. Technology! On the video game side, Wizards appears to be pulling back from its plan to release a major game every year. Several projects have reportedly been canceled, but Warlock and Exodus remain in development. Warlock will feature a protagonist whose patron is Tasha, while Exodus is shaping up as a science-fiction RPG with strong Mass Effect energy and a tabletop tie-in that nobody on the podcast entirely understands. The tabletop schedule begins with Arcana Unleashed, a large rules expansion containing eight subclasses, ten backgrounds, twenty-nine feats, thirty-three spells, group patrons, magical factions, forty-seven magic items, and nineteen creature stat blocks. It will also introduce evolving magic items that can grow alongside the characters using them. Its companion campaign, Deadfall, is an espionage-focused adventure running from levels 11 through 20. The characters must save Thay by opposing Szass Tam, which means the situation has become so dire that saving Thay somehow qualifies as the good outcome. The Season of Champions brings a full Dungeons & Dragons crossover with World of Warcraft. The book is being led by longtime D&D designer and Warcraft fan James Wyatt and will include eleven species, six subclasses, iconic locations, recognizable characters, dungeons, monsters designed to provide a raid-like experience, a DM screen, and a map pack with a digital adventure. It will also come in three different editions, allowing Horde and Alliance fans to continue fighting the most important battle of all: which logo belongs on the front of the book. Then comes Dark Sun. Wizards is presenting Athas as the first mature D&D setting, complete with shrink-wrapped books, content warnings, extreme violence, and a trailer that apparently wastes no time separating people from their spinal columns. Dark Sun will receive separate setting and gameplay expansions, a limited-edition Player's Handbook, a new Scion class, a DM screen, maps, and some form of adventure support. The gameplay material alone is expected to approach five hundred pages, suggesting that Wizards is not returning to Athas quietly. Greyhawk will also return during the 2027 Season of Sword and Sorcery. Crown of the Witch Queen is a 160-page adventure featuring Tasha's daughter as its central antagonist, supported by a map pack and DM screen. The final 2027 season, the Season of Rebellion, was announced without details, leaving everyone to speculate angrily until Wizards decides to explain itself. Perhaps the largest long-term change is Wizards' plan for annual setting support produced in partnership with established third-party publishers. Ghostfire Gaming will work on Ravenloft, Visionary Products and Designs will handle Eberron, and Kobold Press will support the Forgotten Realms. Wizards is also developing something with the Hickmans, although details remain scarce. The approach could finally give neglected settings regular adventures and character options, but it also raises questions about outsourcing, quality control, digital-only releases, and whether D&D is about to recreate the overwhelming flood of material from the third-edition era. Despite those concerns, the group is cautiously optimistic. Wizards seems willing to experiment, work with proven creators, support more settings, focus on tabletop products, and admit that maybe trying to become a video game company was not the best use of everyone's time. It could produce an exciting new era for D&D, or it could become an exhausting avalanche of crossovers and subscription content. Either way, Ash will be waiting for the D&D and Family Guy campaign setting so they can finally say they warned us. Key Takeaways Gen Con is becoming D&D's annual announcement hub. Wizards intends to reveal future product roadmaps there instead of relying on scattered online presentations. D&D Beyond is being extensively rebuilt. Planned improvements include group-finding tools, local game-store listings, StartPlaying integration, a redesigned app, a new character builder, a new rules engine, better search, DM tools, and campaign creation. Arcana Unleashed is a major player-focused expansion. It includes subclasses, feats, spells, backgrounds, factions, patrons, dozens of magic items, and new rules for items that evolve with their owners. Deadfall finally supports high-level campaigning. The adventure runs from levels 11 through 20 and sends the party into an espionage conflict against Szass Tam in Thay. The World of Warcraft crossover is a full product line. It includes numerous playable species, subclasses, famous locations, raid-inspired encounters, accessories, digital content, and three different cover editions. Dark Sun is returning without being noticeably softened. Wizards is positioning it as a mature setting with separate lore and gameplay books, graphic content warnings, hundreds of pages of material, and promised adventure support. Greyhawk returns with Crown of the Witch Queen. The adventure will feature Tasha's daughter as the antagonist and lean into a colorful, operatic sword-and-sorcery style. Classic settings may receive annual support. Wizards is partnering with experienced publishers to produce new Ravenloft, Eberron, and Forgotten Realms material, with another Hickman-related project also in development. Third-party partnerships could solve D&D's setting problem. Instead of leaving worlds unsupported for years, specialized publishers can create material while Wizards focuses on core rules and major releases. The biggest risk is content overload. More books, digital releases, partnerships, settings, and crossovers could strengthen the game, but they could also recreate the crowded and difficult-to-navigate release schedule of earlier editions. The overall mood is cautiously optimistic. The announcements suggest that Wizards is taking creative risks, investing in tabletop content, and making decisions that could benefit both players and the wider TTRPG industry. Ever notice how the first staff meeting of the year gets the ironed tablecloths, the good snacks, and the outfit you actually planned in advance... and then somehow still leaves your team overwhelmed instead of inspired? That's the paradox we're unpacking on this episode. As a new school year gets underway, it's tempting to use that first meeting to hand your team everything you think is mission critical, all at once. Handbook. Policies. Vision. Values. Classroom management. Every important thing you've been sitting on, verbally dumped into one meeting because it finally feels like the right moment. And then we wonder why the team walks away foggy instead of focused. In this episode, Chanie breaks down why that approach backfires and walks through a framework for designing a first staff meeting that actually sticks. The core idea: different topics activate different parts of the brain, and a meeting that jumps between all of them without intention is asking your team to do something their brains simply can't do well. What You'll LearnWhy cramming vision, policy, and logistics into one meeting works against you, and the three-part structure to use insteadHow to turn abstract concepts like mission and vision into something your team can actually use when a parent is yelling or a kid needs stitchesThe exact questions to ask your staff so they define, in their own words, how they want to show up when things get hardHow to build a school theme or headline for the year that actually guides decisions about time, money, and energy, instead of getting lost by OctoberA hands-on team activity that gets your whole staff thinking creatively about what your theme looks like in real classroomsWhy investing in people will always outperform investing in another piece of softwareHow to close out the meeting by having each teacher commit to one small, doable habit for the yearConnect With Us:Let's Chat on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chaniewilschanski/Join us on Substack: https://chaniewilschanski.substack.com/

In 2015, Simone Shervington started a property management business with zero properties, no office and a newborn — then moved the whole thing 3.5 hours to a regional town where she knew no one. Nine years on: 300-plus properties across two markets. In this episode you'll discover the free investor handbook that wins out-of-area landlords, the replace-your-income formula every would-be founder should run before quitting, the tenanted-sales niche most agents fumble, and why she refuses to be the biggest office in town. Welcome to Handbook for Humanity! This show comes at a time when certain beliefs about the human person are once again being funded by U.S. federal tax dollars without a vote of the people. Why is this happening and which side of this particular issue of Life do we fall on? We hope this episode will help you answer those questions by exposing you to 2 points of view that paint a clear picture of the two sides in the battle for Life. In the first part of the show Adele, Becki and our content partner Colby Allen sit down to share how one of the most unusual and thought-provoking conversations ever featured on this podcast came to be. It all began with the doctoral dissertation of Doctor Sarah Denny Lorio, who explored a bold and imaginative question: What would it look like if St. John Paul II, author of The Theology of the Body had a conversation with Margaret Sanger - the founder of Planned Parenthood? These two towering individuals had many apposing ideas that still impact our views on the vision of woman, sexuality, freedom and the human body. So listen in as our team talks with Dr. Denny-Lorio to find out what an imagined conversation between these 2 delivered to paint a clearer picture for the questions of: What is true freedom, How do women achieve better health and what is the meaning of intimate relationships.

Scoring battle tactics consistently is one of the biggest differences between winning and losing games in Warhammer Age of Sigmar. In this episode, Rocco, Jack, and Matt break down every General's Handbook 2026 battle tactic, discussing how to score them reliably, when to attempt them, and the mistakes that can cost you the game. Rather than looking at battle tactics through the lens of a single faction, the crew focuses on universal strategies that apply across the game, helping players make better decisions no matter what army they're bringing to the table. In this episode, they cover: Every General's Handbook 2026 battle tactic explained The easiest and most reliable tactics to score Battle tactics that require planning several turns in advance Risk versus reward—knowing when to abandon a tactic and pivot How to deny your opponent key battle tactics Common mistakes that leave points on the table Tips for adapting battle tactics to different army archetypes and battleplans Whether you're preparing for your next RTT, GT, or simply looking to improve your tournament results, mastering the General's Handbook 2026 battle tactics is one of the fastest ways to become a more consistent Age of Sigmar player. How do you go from voicing a beaver in a sleep med commercial to portraying TV's most amoral attorney on its most iconic crime drama?! For actor, author, and teacher Michael Kostroff, the answer is: embrace the unexpected.Best known as cunning defense lawyer Maurice Levy on HBO's The Wire, Michael joins Weezy this week to reflect on a career that has taken him from television dramas and Broadway musicals to films, teen comedies, sitcoms and commercials. You will currently find him on the MGM+/Prime Marvel superhero series (available in both color and black & white!) Spider-Noir with Nicolas Cage, as New York City's mayor and he's also just wrapped up his first Broadway run as the bank manager in Dog Day Afternoon.Along the way, he shares behind-the-scenes stories from the national tour of The Producers (where lightning-fast costume changes and a grueling schedule collided with back and forth flights to film The Wire). Michael's career then took him to The Plot Against America, The Wizard of Lies (with Robert De Niro!) and The Blacklist.Michael shares his thoughts on The Wire's rarified role as a television landmark, why its richly layered characters continue to resonate, and whether he minds being typecast. He also talks about his four books, including Letters from Backstage, which grew out of emails that unexpectedly found a massive audience, and The Stage Actor's Handbook, born from his desire to provide aspiring actors with the practical guidance missing from their theater education. Michael opens up about the life-saving community he found in theater and the salve it offered for his unhappy childhood. We peek at his viral apartment tour video, revealing the unglamorous truth behind the doors of a working actor. We get schooled on the perils of backstage "showmances," and we learn why, after decades of surprising turns, he's still excited to see where the next one leads. This is a warm, funny, and inspiring conversation with an actor whose career proves that the most rewarding paths are often the least predictable. In current media-- Weezy: The American Experiment and Little House on the Prairie on NetflixProducer Dina: AMC/AMC+ Series Dark Winds, streaming on NetflixPath Points of Interest:Michael KostroffMichael Kostroff on WikipediaMichael Kostroff on IMDBMichael Kostroff on InstagramMichael Kostroff on FacebookMichael Kostroff on YoutubeApartment TourBooks by Michael KostroffThe Stage Actor's Handbook: Traditions, Protocols, and Etiquette for the Working and Aspiring ProfessionalBy Michael Kostroff and Julie GarnyéLetters From BackstageThe American ExperimentLittle House On The PrairieDark Winds

Send Jackie A Message!Everyone in the yoga and Pilates world is telling you the same thing right now: you need a handbook. And they're right — until they let you believe the handbook is the fix. Because here's what the research shows: SOPs don't fail because they're badly written. They fail because nobody is holding the standard. In this episode, Jackie names the trap almost every studio owner falls into — asking a document to do a manager's job — and gets precise about three words we throw around like they're interchangeable: leadership, management, and systems. You lead the direction. You manage the standard. The system remembers it for you. Miss the middle layer, and even a beautiful forty-page handbook rots in a Google Drive folder while you keep re-fixing everything yourself. In this episode:Why documents are inert — and why "I wrote it down" is not the same as "it's handled"The three layers defined: leadership (what matters and who you're being), management (accountability, feedback, and training — this week), and systems (the handbook, SOPs, and checklists that remember the standard)The story of a client, a Pilates studio owner, with forty-two pages of SOPs and a team following none of them — and the exact changes that made the handbook realThe 90-second coaching conversation to use the next time a standard slips (word for word)How to onboard so the handbook actually lands: walk it, shadow it, teach it backStandard of the week, checklists, public praise, and handing ownership to your leads — the rhythms that keep standards aliveThe one rule you can't break: hold the standard the same way for your newest hire and your biggest superstarYour action step this week: pick one standard that keeps slipping. Don't rewrite the SOP. Give it an owner who isn't you, put it where it will be seen, and add it to your next team check-in. One standard, one owner, one rhythm.A handbook tells your team what good looks like. Management is what makes it happen. Leadership is why they want to.Work with Jackie MurphySay Hi on Instagram @studioceoofficialJoin The Studio CEO Program: https://www.jackiegmurphy.com/studioceoThe Grow Mastermind: https://www.jackiegmurphy.com/mastermind

In this episode, Matt, Jack, and Rocco break down the General's Handbook 2026 battleplans and discuss the strategies that consistently lead to victories at RTTs, GTs, and major tournaments. Rather than focusing on a single faction, the team explores the universal concepts that help players score more points, control the board, and make smarter decisions regardless of the army they're playing. In this episode, they cover: How to approach the General's Handbook 2026 battleplans Deployment strategies that set you up for success Planning your first three turns before the game begins Prioritizing objectives, battle tactics, and board control Knowing when to play aggressively and when to preserve resources Common mistakes players make on this season's missions How different army archetypes can adapt to each battleplan Whether you're preparing for your next local RTT or a major GT, understanding the missions is one of the biggest advantages you can have. What if aging is not simply something that happens to us, but a biological process we can learn to recognize, understand, and navigate with greater agency? In this episode of Bathroom Diaries, I am reposting my conversation with Larry Olsen on The Brain Vault Podcast. We explored a subject very close to my heart: the difference between aging helplessly and aging with agency. After more than 25 years in medicine—including decades spent caring for older adults—I have seen what happens when the early signals of decline are ignored until they become disease. Many of the problems that appear in our seventies and eighties do not begin in old age. They begin much earlier, often during the hormonal and metabolic transitions of middle age. I call these transitions "the pauses." For women, this may include perimenopause and menopause. For men, it may include the less frequently discussed transition of andropause. These shifts can affect energy, metabolism, mood, cognition, sleep, muscle, skin, sexual health, and the body's overall internal harmony. Larry and I discuss what it means to recognize these changes before they become irreversible—and why protecting your healthspan is just as important as extending your lifespan. In this conversation, we explore: • The difference between aging with agency and aging helplessly   • Why the problems of later life often begin during middle age   • Perimenopause, menopause, and andropause as biological "pauses"   • Why men are rarely taught to recognize their own hormonal transition   • The relationship between hormones, energy, mood, metabolism, and cognition   • Why longevity must include healthspan, vitality, and quality of life   • The difference between sickness management and proactive wellness care   • The importance of individualized guidance when considering HRT or testosterone   • Why mindset and the stories we tell ourselves can influence how we experience aging   • The embryological relationship between the skin and the brain   • Why I believe our skin and brain remain connected throughout life   • The importance of finding practitioners who understand both disease and prevention   A longer life is not enough if the body can no longer support the consciousness, purpose, wisdom, and energy we have spent a lifetime developing. The goal is not merely to add years to life. It is to protect the health, function, beauty, energy, and awareness required to remain fully present inside those years. ABOUT DR. Sportify Your Business What separates a championship-winning franchise from a team that can't even make the playoffs? It's a locker room culture rooted in a higher standard of fair play, integrity, and a relentless drive to win the right way. In this episode of A New Direction with Coach Jay, we are huddling up to completely redraw your corporate playbook. Join me as I sit down with performance strategist and author Jake Shannon to discuss his groundbreaking book, Sportify: Beyond Business Ethics. We are tossing out the dusty, uninspired compliance manuals and mapping out a radical new game plan where high-level moral codes meet elite athletic execution. In this hard-hitting episode, we are diving deep into the powerful, unexpected intersection of elite sportsmanship and bioethical principlism. Shannon argues that traditional business ethics are fundamentally broken, relying on lazy, defensive legal box-checking that inspires absolutely no one. Instead, he borrows the rigorous, high-stakes ethical frameworks typically used in modern medicine—Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-Maleficence, and Justice—and fuses them with the unyielding spirit of athletic fair play. We'll discuss how this unique ethical ecosystem creates a transparent, high-trust workplace where your team doesn’t just follow rules out of fear, but actively plays hard for the brand because they respect the game. Sportify isn’t just philosophical theory; it's about the practical ethics of daily leadership. As coaches and managers, we've all dealt with the frustrating drain of “Zombie Labor”—that exhausting scenario where a company pays for full-time salaries but only gets a fraction of the actual effort due to poor morale and toxic corporate governance. Shannon's Sportify framework tackles this head-on, proving that running an ethical organization is actually the ultimate productivity hack. We will break down how transitioning from an obsolete supervisor model to a dynamic “Head Coach” framework changes everything, allowing you to stop running an “adult daycare” and start engineering a self-governing competitive dynasty. Whether you're an entrepreneur trying to protect your bottom line or a manager ready to revitalize a disengaged locker room, this episode is your ultimate pre-game brief on how doing the right thing drives winning results. It's time to stop settling for mediocrity and take your leadership in a bold, new direction. Get ready to upgrade your corporate code of conduct for good. See you on the field and Sportify your business! Jake Shannon’s book, “Sportify: Beyond Business Ethics” is a quick read filled with no nonsense guidance to run your business like a sports team.  Let’s be honest, sports require competition and sportsmanship.  Your business should really run on the same principles. In Sportify, Jake Shannon makes a strong case that you can run a successful and profitable business by applying the same sports and ethical principles that we find in sports. In today’s business world it can feel very difficult to have a winning edge and still play ethically, but Jake Shannon uses examples throughout Sportify to demonstrate that when you play the ethical game, you reduce problems, build trust with customers, obtain the best talent and create a legacy that goes beyond you. The problem for most companies is the question of leadership.  If leadership demonstrates ethical behavior and you make it part of your core values and mission your business will be holding up the championship trophy at the end of the day.  Is it a one time fix? No, it will require practice.  Practice in your daily routines.  Practice with each other.  Practice with your clients and customers and practice in the business and outside of it. Sportify while a quick read is the new way to do business, and do it successfully!  Loved this book.  I highly recommend it. You can get your copy of Sportify by clicking here!
