We examine the establishment of a professional football organization, showcasing the inaugural game between the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles, a significant milestone that laid the groundwork for future leagues. The discussion extends to the emergence of iconic teams and players, as well as the cultural significance of these developments within the broader context of American sports. The narrative of 1920 in football is replete with significant events that collectively heralded a new era for the sport. Central to this story is the formation of the American Professional Football Association (APFA) on September 17, 1920, in Canton, Ohio, which laid the groundwork for organized professional football. This episode meticulously examines the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the APFA, emphasizing its role in fostering a more structured and ethical framework for professional play. Furthermore, the discussion contextualizes this development within the broader historical milieu, including the impacts of World War I and the Spanish flu pandemic, which had previously disrupted the sport and its traditions. The resurgence of college football, exemplified by Harvard's triumph in the 1920 Rose Bowl against Oregon, serves as a poignant reminder of the sport's enduring appeal and the revival of competitive spirit following a tumultuous period.

Chosen by Dave, A Shot at Glory is a Scottish football drama directed by Michael Corrente and written by Denis O'Neill, bringing together a surprisingly heavyweight cast for a film about lower-league football, club loyalty, and men shouting at each other in tracksuits. Robert Duvall stars as Gordon McLeod and also served as a producer, with Michael Keaton, Ally McCoist, Brian Cox, Cole Hauser, Kirsty Mitchell, and Morag Hood rounding out a cast that feels like someone put Hollywood, Scottish football, and a pub argument into the same blender. The film was produced around 1999/2000 and received a limited US theatrical release in May 2002, followed by a DVD release later that year.Filming took place across Scotland, with football scenes using real grounds including Boghead Park, Palmerston Park, Rugby Park, and Hampden Park, while much of the fictional town of Kilnockie was shot in Crail, Fife. The movie also has a proper Scottish football texture thanks to appearances from real players and football figures, while the soundtrack was composed by Mark Knopfler, giving the whole thing a Celtic-tinged musical polish rather than just the sound of 8,000 people shouting “man on.” Critics were mixed, the box office was modest, but over time it has become a bit of a cult curiosity for football fans, especially anyone who enjoys seeing Ally McCoist sharing screen space with Robert Duvall and Michael Keaton.Trailer Guy SynopsisIn a small Scottish town, where the rain falls sideways and football is less a sport than a legally recognised emotional condition, one struggling club faces the fight of its life.Kilnockie FC has history, pride, and a fanbase clinging to hope like it's the last pie at half-time. But when an American owner threatens to rip the club from its roots, only one thing can save them: victory, belief, and a team held together by grit, grudges, and questionable decision-making.Fun factsThe film's working title was reportedly The Cup, which is accurate, but does sound like a placeholder left on someone's laptop until five minutes before the poster was printed.Ally McCoist plays Jackie McQuillan, a fictional footballer, despite McCoist himself being one of Scottish football's most recognisable real-life strikers.Brian Cox appears as Martin Smith, the Rangers manager, years before a whole new generation would know him as Logan Roy in Succession.Cole Hauser, later famous as Rip Wheeler in Yellowstone, plays Kelsey O'Brian, a backup goalkeeper, despite reports noting he had no real football background.Several real footballers appear in the movie, including Owen Coyle, Andy Smith, Peter Hetherston, and Didier Agathe.Robert Duvall reportedly spent time observing Raith Rovers to help shape his performance as a Scottish football manager. The fictional Kilnockie FC was loosely inspired by the kind of improbable cup exploits associated with smaller Scottish clubs, including Airdrieonians' runs in the 1990s.Mark Knopfler's soundtrack album contains 11 tracks and was released in 2002, with Guy Fletcher also involved as producer.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. Carbon-plated running shoes have completely changed endurance sport. World records are tumbling. Recovery between sessions seems quicker. And for many runners and triathletes, they feel almost impossible to ignore. But are they coming with a hidden cost? In this episode, I'm joined by physio and sub-30-minute 10k runner Andy Smith to explore what these shoes are actually doing biomechanically, why we may now be seeing different injury patterns in runners and triathletes, and how to use carbon-plated shoes without breaking yourself in the process. This is a practical conversation about performance, durability, strength, and why “faster” isn't always as simple as it looks. 5 KEY POINTS 1. Carbon shoes change running mechanics - They reduce load on the calf and Achilles… but shift stress further up the chain. 2. Injury patterns may be changing - Andy is seeing more bone stress injuries in areas like the femur and pelvis. 3. Faster recovery can be deceptive - The shoes may allow athletes to handle more training volume… before the body is ready. 4. Strength is now non-negotiable - Foot, calf, hip, pelvis and core strength all become even more important. 5. Most athletes transition too aggressively - Andy recommends gradually building into carbon shoes rather than using them for every run. 3 TAKEAWAYS 1. Don't let the shoes do the work - The stronger you are, the more benefit you'll get from them. 2. Protect your weak links - Hip stability, calf strength and foot control matter more than ever. 3. Build gradually - Introduce carbon shoes slowly and strategically. KILLER QUOTE

It is the first Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Exclusive of 2026! I am very privileged to welcome two-time Emmy-nominated actress Sydney Mikayla to the podcast! Sydney began her career in 2011, playing roles in various television shows, including Community, Criminal Minds, Fuller House, Hot in Cleveland, Parenthood, and School of Rock. In 2019, she joined the cast of the long-running ABC soap opera General Hospital (GH) as Trina Robinson. Throughout her time on the show, she shared scenes with Brook Kerr (Dr. Portia Robinson), Maura West (Ava Jerome), William Lipton (Cameron Webber), Avery Kristen Pohl (Esme Prince), and Emmy winners Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Spencer Cassadine) and Eden McCoy (Josslyn Jacks). She exited the soap in 2022, but not before earning two Emmy Nominations for the defunct Daytime Emmy Award category Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series. In addition to appearing in live-action roles, Sydney Mikayla lent her voice to various animated series. She voiced Maya in Craig of the Creek, Phoebe Rose in Dew Drop Diaries, Andy Smith in Invincible Fight Girl, and Wolf in Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. Recently, Sydney Mikayla starred in Sarah T. Schwab's haunting psychological thriller Crybaby Bridge. The film focuses on Samantha (Mikayla), a quiet and observant 16-year-old who is pregnant, adopted, and increasingly unmoored after her affluent parents relocate the family from Philadelphia to rural Pennsylvania. Intended to protect her from bullying, the move instead deepens her isolation. As long-buried secrets about her adoption surface, what begins as an intimate family drama spirals into psychological suspense where trauma and the supernatural uneasily collide. On this exclusive episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Sydney Mikayla spoke about her time on General Hospital, her voice-acting experience, and previewed Crybaby Bridge. Kindness. Humility. Generosity. These are words anyone discussing Harold Sasaki would use to describe this gentle giant of a man. But those of us who have been personally impacted by Harold know there is a tenacity to our teacher, a hunger for knowledge, a curiosity for what's possible, and a glean of motivation in his eye that propelled him to be one of the greatest trailblazers and pioneers of bonsai culture in North American bonsai over the past fifty years. Through his facility, Colorado Bonsai Limited, Harold Sasaki, or Hal as friends call him, has been teaching bonsai to curious and passionate practitioners and inspiring the next generation of bonsai artists and professionals for over four decades. Harold was one of a handful of instructors in the Rocky Mountain region who introduced yamadori into American bonsai culture and was the leading authority on ethical yamadori collection. When the rest of our budding bonsai culture was looking for material in nurseries, Harold was embracing the wild forms of rugged trees from the Rockies and taking people on safari to share the passion and technique of sustainable collecting practices. Harold's contributions go beyond pioneering the yamadori movement. He also sparked the flame of bonsai passion in known personalities including Mirai's own Ryan Neil, Golden Arrow's Andy Smith, First Branch Bonsai's Todd Schlafer, Will Kerns, Adam Johnson, Tim Arsenault, and so many others who have gone on to do big things and contribute to the art of bonsai and culture in our country. In fact, when you look at the landscape of bonsai in North America today, it's impossible to imagine our bonsai culture without appreciating the fingerprint of Harold's impact, including the heartfelt generosity and spirit of sharing Harold imbued to his students that continues to expand and make our community so rich and robust. It was a pleasure and an honor for Ryan to sit down with his mentor and go back to the beginning of where Harold's journey started, and to walk through the journey of one of American bonsai's GOATs. Thank you Harold, it was a pleasure my friend. Enjoy!
