Pavlopetri, frente a la costa de Laconia, en el sureste del Peloponeso, es una ciudad prehistórica sumergida que consta de cimientos de edificios intactos, patios, calles, y tumbas talladas en rocas. Se trata de la única ciudad completa más antigua jamás encontrada bajo las aguas; el asentamiento dispone de materiales tanto del neolítico como de la Edad de Bronce y se cree que la ciudad floreció durante el período entre 5000 y 3000 años a. C.. El asentamiento estaba situado en un istmo que une la isla de Elafónisos con el continente (hoy playa Pounta); una serie de terremotos junto con el aumento del nivel del mar hicieron que se hundiera, algo que en realidad ha contribuido a la conservación del yacimiento durante los últimos 3000 a 4000 años. El Zigurat de Ur es un zigurat enclavado junto a las ruinas de la antigua ciudad sumeria de Ur, en el actual Irak. Fue levantado como lugar de culto del dios Nanna, durante el período de El Obeid, y reconstruido en el siglo XXI a. C. por el rey Ur-Nammu.
