Today I'm joined by the incredibly talented Matt Krumins - a Melbourne-based professional photographer with over 15 years of experience across landscapes, wildlife, events, and underwater photography. A keen diver, he commenced his underwater journey over 2 decades ago and I've admired Matt's work for several years, particularly his striking big animal imagery from South Africa and his captivating underwater shots from Tufi Resort - where I had the privilege of living for a year. Matt's passion for nature and storytelling through imagery is unmistakable, and his journey back underwater is one I've been looking forward to. He was named an Olympus Underwater Ambassador back in 2016 and in 2022 took out the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year award in the Monochrome category. Beyond the accolades, Matt is a passionate educator who believes photography should be fun, creative, and accessible to everyone.
Technical diving opens up a whole new world for shark researchers like Dr. Yannis Papastamatiou, who has built a career studying predator dynamics in some of the most remote and challenging underwater environments. In this episode, Yannis shares his global journey through the UK, Greece, California, Hawaii, and now Florida — explaining how each location shaped his shark research and conservation strategies. Shark science isn't just about getting close to these apex predators — it's also about the sophisticated diving techniques and equipment needed to study their behavior where most humans can't go. We dig deep into the importance of technical diving for accessing shark habitats, why it matters for predator-prey studies, and how science divers train for this demanding work. Whether you're into marine biology, scuba diving, or just love sharks, this episode will fascinate you. Czy można połączyć testowanie nowego sprzętu nurkowego, chill nad jeziorem i nurkowe pogaduchy w jednym miejscu? Można – i to właśnie podczas Demo Daysów. A wszystko to w duchu wspólnej pasji i… mokrej przygody.

In this episode of The Scuba GOAT Podcast, host Matt Waters is joined by marine surveyor Mick Uberti to take a deep dive into the realities of dive liveaboard safety—what's working, what's failing, and what needs to change. With over two decades of experience in maritime safety, Mick has worked with boat owners worldwide, including the UAE royal family and Richard Branson. As the founder of Maritime Survey Australia (MSA) and an AMSA-accredited Domestic Commercial Vessel (DCV) surveyor, he has conducted vessel surveys across the globe, including some of Egypt's Red Sea liveaboard fleet. His expertise has led to a collaboration with Taucher.net, a leading German diving platform, which has publicly recommended that dive operators in the Red Sea undergo safety audits by Mick's team at Maritime Survey International (MSI). This episode is part of a larger series on liveaboards, aiming to provide a

Hi, in this episode Ben will discuss the Dunning Kruger effect. A cognitive bias that was created in 1999 by David Dunning and Justin Kruger. It gives a graphical representation of the development when learning new things. It's very applicable to us divers, as we can easily become the victim of incomplete education and/or a false sense of security by our own doing. In honor of Women's History Month this episode features the extraordinary journey of Lola Reid Allin from surviving domestic violence to becoming a groundbreaking female aviator with over 6,000 flight hours and numerous historical firsts in aviation. Lola shares how flying became both her passion and her path to freedom from an abusive marriage.~When Lola Reid Allin's husband suggested they take flying lessons together, she never imagined aviation would become both her passion and her escape route from domestic abuse. This powerful conversation traces her remarkable journey from controlled spouse to groundbreaking female pilot—accumulating over 6,000 flight hours and becoming the first woman to hold numerous prestigious positions in aviation during an era when women were actively discouraged from such pursuits. With unflinching honesty, Lola shares the reality of recognizing abuse patterns and finding the strength to leave. The tipping point? Her husband calling her flight instructors to announce her pilot certification before she could share her own accomplishment—a seemingly small but profoundly controlling action that crystalized her decision. Beyond her aviation achievements, Lola reveals her fascinating second chapter living in Mexico as a scuba dive master and immersing herself in Maya communities across Belize and Mexico. Her anthropological adventures living with indigenous families showcase her boundless curiosity and courage. Most striking is Lola's revelation about writing her memoir "Highway to the Sky" after discovering in 2014 that despite progress, only about 5% of commercial pilots today are women—barely higher than during her active flying years. Her story illuminates how breaking free from controlling relationships and breaking through gender barriers require the same qualities: unwavering self-belief and the courage to venture into uncharted territory.
Send us a textThe SS United States once sailed mightily across the Atlantic. She set the transatlantic sailing speed record , which still stands today, only using 2/3 of her power. She was once majestic, powerful, and one of the most luxurious vessels of its time. But time has passed. The jet airplane cut transatlantic travel from days to hours. The need for such sea faring vessels disappeared and with in just a few short years the SS United States was mothballed, her furnishings sold, her interior gutted, and she sat at port for a half century as the elements took their toll. She is now headed for Florida to become an artificial underwater reef. A project that will almost certainly rejuvenate life into this lonely vessel at the bottom of the sea. As we commemorate the SS United States historic place on the high seas and watch her slow sail from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama to be prepared for sinking. We thought now was a perfect time to reflect on it all as we watch her final sail before she sinks into history and moves on to its new chapter under the sea. Gemma and Ian were invited to the pre-release press screening of Last Breath prior to its public release in late February 2025. It's a heart-pounding film that follows seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging elements to rescue their crewmate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean's surface. Based on a true story, Last Breath is an electrifying story about teamwork, resilience, and a race against time to do the impossible. Dr. Hoffman's scuba diving adventure!Chronic fatigue in AmericaDo I have osteoporosis?
The inventor of Avelo explains exactly how it works and why it's changing how people go scuba diving.Aviad Cahana invented this new system, intended to make scuba diving easier, more accessible, and just a lot more fun.Buoyancy Control is no longer an obstacle, especially for new divers and students.Scuba Diving is also somewhat restrictive due to carrying lots of weight (especially shore diving), and this reduces the overall weight a diver has on their back.Scuba Diving is not only safer with this system, but it also reduces air consumption (even for professionals). Aviad also reveals some wild research into buoyancy, weight, and wetsuits, turning what we've been teaching Open Water students upside down.Renowned underwater stunt performer, Liz Parkinson also explains her endorsement of this device. This brings the world of scuba diving much closer to the experience of freediving, without the breathhold limitations. The Avelo System is already changing the future of scuba diving. The BiG Scuba Duo, Gemma and Ian chat to Luke Bullus. Luke Bullus is the Diving Officer and a trustee of the marine conservation charity Fathoms Free. Fathoms Free is a group of experienced volunteer divers and skippers committed to protecting marine wildlife and the environment. They focus on removing ALDFG (abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear) and other marine debris from the coastal waters of Cornwall and Devon. ALDFG, often referred to as "ghost gear", continues to "fish" by entangling, trapping, and killing wildlife indiscriminately. Since its inception in 2014, Fathoms Free has led initiatives to remove these hazardous materials from the ocean, preventing further damage to the marine environment. The charity also collaborates with and supports other organisations by using its boats and experienced skippers to assist with conservation efforts that contribute to a cleaner, safer ocean for everyone. Over the past decade, Fathoms Free has become a leading advocate for healthier oceans, inspiring collective action to protect marine ecosystems for future generations. Luke is passionate about the marine environment and dedicates most of his free time to ghost gear recovery operations and ocean conservation. Seashells on the seashore are being taken in large quantities and it's increasing erosion along beaches. A new study reveals the tourism industry is taking too many seashells along coastlines in Costa Rica. In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the environmental impact of taking seashells from coastal areas, particularly in Costa Rica. He highlights a growing crisis where the removal of seashells, driven by tourism, destabilizes beaches, accelerates erosion, and harms marine ecosystems. Seashells are essential for various marine species, including hermit crabs, and play a crucial role in maintaining coral reefs and nutrient cycles. Lewin shares a personal anecdote about a conversation with a friend who chooses not to engage in activities that could negatively impact local environments while traveling. This perspective emphasizes the importance of considering the local ecosystem and communities when visiting new places. The episode reveals that in 2023 alone, authorities seized over five tons of seashells, complicating conservation efforts due to difficulties in tracing their origins. Innovative solutions, such as using AI technology to classify and return confiscated shells to their natural environments, are being developed to address this issue. The podcast urges tourists to leave wildlife and natural resources, like seashells, untouched, promoting sustainable tourism practices. Lewin encourages listeners to appreciate the beauty of these natural elements without taking them home, reinforcing the idea that every species plays a vital role in ecological balance for future generations.
