Tread Perilously's month of slasher TV leads to Bates Motel for an episode called "Underwater." After dealing with dope-smoking young people staying at the motel, Norma is ready to pull up stakes and move to Hawaii. Norman, meanwhile, is getting positive reinforcement at school and is not happy about the possibility of starting life over again. Meanwhile, Dylan agrees to help Bradley recover some of her father's belongings from his office. Emma enjoys a cupcake (not a euphemism). And, elsewhere, a largely unseen Ben Abernathy menaces Norma from afar. But did he send her the roses that really set her off? Erik lays into Russell T. Davies for seemingly no reason. Carlton Cuse also gets examined. Both note his shows tend to disappear into the ether. Justin reveals Bates Motel was his first exposure to Olivia Cooke. The rest of the cast, which includes Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, also get high marks. Erik appreciates the way the episode deploys Jere Burns while Justin enjoys the presence of Nestor Carbonell. The clearly foreshadowed issues with Miss Watson lead to a long discussion. Justin explains the difference between Norman and Mother. Geography Corner applauds the choice to move the story to Oregon and the Ashmore Alarm needs adjustment.

Send us a textConnect with Michele at https://www.bookclues.comWhat if the most important maps we'll ever draw are hidden under miles of water and thousands of PSI? We sit down with physicist and exploration roboticist James Bellingham to trace a life spent pushing past pressure, busting tethers, and building the autonomous systems that make the deep sea knowable. We start with the physics that rule the depths: hydrostatic pressure that crushes air spaces, why small pressure vessels survive better than big ones, and how neutral buoyancy and material science set the limits of human and machine. That frame sets up the cautionary tale of the Titan submersible—why carbon fiber shines in tension but falters in compression, how storage and certification matter, and what fast‑moving tech cultures miss when the ocean sets the terms. From there, we cut the cable. With radio waves blocked by conductive seawater, true autonomy became the only path. James explains how AUVs navigate without GPS, conserve energy, and work without ships, opening doors to safer, cheaper, and vastly wider exploration. The payoff is discovery. Only about 26 percent of the seafloor is mapped with modern bathymetry, so AUVs deliver first looks: mid‑ocean ridges where new crust is born, hydrothermal vents that power sunless ecosystems, and trench habitats that most of us will never see yet shape global cycles. We revisit shipwrecks as time capsules—Endurance and Titanic rendered in crisp 3D—and walk through crisis missions that advanced science: Deepwater Horizon's deep oil plumes metabolized by microbes, and the MH370 search that produced exquisite seafloor maps even without the plane. Each story underlines a simple truth: every dive, even the “unsuccessful” ones, expands the ocean's blueprint.Looking ahead, James sketches an ocean filled with quiet robot fleets running experiments, mapping chemistry and biology at scale, and building predictive skill for climate, fisheries, and coastal safety. The same playbook reaches outward to Europa and Enceladus, where subsurface oceans and likely hydrothermal vents could host life built on chemistry rather than sunlight. If the deep teaches anything, it's that curiosity thrives without Wi‑Fi—and that exploration gets smarter when we let machines take the pressure. If this journey into the hidden 70 percent sparked your curiosity, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves science, and leave a review with the deep‑sea question you want answered next.

Welcome to The Business of Aquaculture! This week, we dive beyond the splashy headlines into the quiet revolution happening under the waves with Dr. James Bellingham—world-renowned robotics pioneer, executive director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy, and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of exploration robotics. He's also the author of How Are Marine Robots Shaping Our Future? From the Arctic to the Antarctic, Dr. Bellingham has led two dozen AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) expeditions through crushing pressure, freezing darkness, and some very opinionated currents. In this episode, we explore how marine robots are already transforming aquaculture management, climate data collection, offshore energy scouting, and even shipwreck discovery. We dig into:How ocean forces, habitats, and creatures shape our daily lives—and the urgent environmental threats robotics can address.Real-world deployments, from wreck recovery to deep-sea resource mapping—and what's next for industry. The ethics and safety playbook: accountability, regulation, and trust as autonomy scales. If you care about sustainable seafood, resilient supply chains, and smarter decisions at sea, this conversation is your sonar ping. "Dissecting Compensation - A Primer on Understanding, Negotiating and Managing Pay"A CMO Confidential Interview with Richard Sanderson, the Marketing, Sales, and Communications Practice Leader at Spencer Stuart. Richard starts with the basics of salary, bonus and equity and branches out to compensation mix, the various types of equity, negotiating best practices, and the "other" elements of an offer. Key topics include: why the devil is in the details; when and how to discuss compensation; the difference between dumb luck and bad luck; and why everyone should do a "multi-year cash flow analysis." Tune in to hear why you should always read the proxy statement and the importance of being prepared to explain how you are using AI.In Part 2, host Mike Linton sits back down with Spencer Stuart Practice Leader Richard Sanderson to get tactical about comp negotiations, severance, equity, and managing your team through pay anxiety. If you're a CMO (or headed there), this episode is your field guide to securing a fair offer and stewarding compensation conversations with your org.Points of interest: • Your moment of maximum leverage: why the verbal offer is the prime time to align on comp—and how to use that window without damaging trust. • How different companies negotiate: spotting “full & fair” one-shot offers vs. multi-round negotiators—and how to work the process with your recruiter as a broker to keep heat and emotion out. • Beyond base and bonus: what's often negotiable (e.g., severance, sign-on/bridge, relocation, start date, work location, travel, even one-offs) and how to prioritize your asks. • Severance norms & timing: what policies typically look like (e.g., 6–12 months in many cases), when to ask, and why it's safest through the recruiter. • Feeling underpaid? Building a data-backed case with market signals, peer benchmarks, recruiter insight—and how proxy statements can ground internal conversations. • Underwater equity & team morale: acknowledging pain, reframing to a long-term vision, and understanding annual equity refresh dynamics (timing matters). • Do the 5-year cash-flow analysis: compare current state vs. new offer (vesting, cliffs, bridge needs) so you don't get surprised in Year 1–2. • Today's relocation reality: mortgage-rate math and why moves can be financially punitive—plan your package accordingly. • Offer etiquette & reputation risk: why turning down a written offer is a red flag on process—and why reneging after signing can follow you. • Be ready for the AI question: every senior marketing interview now probes AI use cases, impact, and CFO alignment—have crisp examples.Sponsored by QuadMarketing only works when everything works together. Canada's future security doesn't just lie in the skies or across its borders — it lies beneath the waves. Newfoundland and Labrador, long defined by its connection to the North Atlantic, is emerging as the front line in Canada's underwater defence and surveillance revolution. In this episode, Kraken Robotics' David Shea reveals how cutting-edge sonar and subsea intelligence are giving Canada new eyes and ears in the ocean depths — technology once reserved for superpowers, now developed and deployed from St. John's. And General Rick Hillier, former Chief of Defence Staff, joins host John Stackhouse to explore why control of our underwater domain is critical to national sovereignty, Arctic readiness, and alliance security in an age of rising global tension. Mari Luz Canaquiri (Kukama Indigenous People, Peru) grew up knowing that the Marañón River is sacred, because they carry life itself. When oil spills poisoned its waters and her people, her voice was dismissed because she was a woman. Refusing to be silenced, she joined other Kukama women to found the Huaynakana Kamatahuara Kana Federation, leading with a strength that is inclusive, resilient, and cannot be corrupted. Together, they won a landmark victory: the Marañón became the first river in Peru recognized as a subject of rights. In 2025, Mari Luz was honored with the Goldman Prize—the “Environmental Nobel”—for her fight to defend her river and her people.
This week Jim and Dar cover a whirlwind of strange stories. A U.S. Congressman drops hints about secrets hidden in our oceans, while the Pentagon denies a mysterious UFO memo. In Kuwait, archaeologists uncover a 7,000-year-old figurine that looks oddly alien, and new research reveals meditation may have a darker side than most realize. Scientists even wonder if a bizarre signal could be proof of a wormhole from a parallel universe. The mysteries don't stop there—a Canadian lake monster is caught on video, and experts debate whether to nuke an asteroid that might strike the moon. A moving story of a psychic's deathbed message brings chills, while Harvard's Avi Loeb uncovers strange ocean fragments that don't quite fit our world. And finally, a haunted restaurant in Pennsylvania serves up both food and ghosts. It's a jam-packed episode filled with some laughs and behind-the-scenes memories along the way. End Song: "Squandered" by Salvage 00:00:00 – Cold Open, Social Media “Raw Sewage,” and the Kimmel Setup The guys kick off with snack banter and a barking “producer dog,” then vent about the internet's sewage firehose and culture-war escalation—teasing the night's first big story: ABC suspending Jimmy Kimmel after his Charlie Kirk bit. 00:10:00 – Kimmel vs. Disney: The Contract Chess Match They read coverage framing Bob Iger and Disney caught between D.C. pressure and Hollywood outrage, play Kimmel's clip about Kirk, and argue Disney may just be hunting a morals-clause exit more than defending speech. 00:20:00 – “Free Speech” or Just Business? A sharper take on free-speech claims: the FCC can't outlaw Kimmel; platforms and affiliates can still walk. They contrast today's outrage with past deplatformings (e.g., Alex Jones) and point out the inconsistency of everyone's “principles.” 00:30:00 – The Australia Mix-Up & Ratings Reality They laugh over hundreds of Kimmel complaints misdirected to Australia's ABC, then note ratings and affiliate ad pressure may matter more than politics. Protest optics aside, reruns could probably match his numbers. 00:40:00 – Burchett, SKIFs, and “Deep-Water Entities” Pivot to UFOs/USOs: Rep. Tim Burchett's chatter about craft emerging from deep water; SKIF whispers around David Grusch; frustration that hearings recycle stories without subpoenaing the real gatekeepers. 00:50:00 – Invisible Residents: Classic USO Cases A tour through Ivan T. Sanderson's 1970 book: cigar-shaped blue-white craft pacing a ship, diving beneath the hull, and WWII-era objects surfacing then shooting skyward—suggesting surveillance patrols and ocean “bases.” 01:00:00 – Viral “Meteor Slime” Debunk That TikTok “living meteorite” from Panama? Great practical effects, not aliens. They cite polymer/hexane demo videos showing the exact wriggle behavior; fun Halloween content, just not real. 01:10:00 – The Hat Man: Sleep Paralysis or Shadow Entity? Deep dive into the Hat Man meme: neuroscientists say it's culture-shaped sleep paralysis; the show entertains that plus the paranormal angle (shadow people, MIB parallels). Listeners share eerily similar accounts. 01:20:00 – Call-Ins: Ouija, Weird Sleep, Witching Hour Callers recount Ouija board weirdness and a rash of 1–3 a.m. wake-ups. The crew swaps remedies and wonders—half-joking—if celestial strangeness is messing with everyone's sleep. 01:30:00 – Jezebel's “We Hired Witches” Piece Gets Pulled They review the Jezebel article boasting an Etsy curse on Charlie Kirk (later edited/removed post-assassination), debate ethics of “satire” about hexes, and note a new doc where a guy seeks to be cursed to test effects. 01:40:00 – Are Whales Trying to Talk to Us? From crop circles to “bubble circles”: humpbacks blowing rings around swimmers/boats as possible communication; shoutouts to bioacoustic playback experiments and Star Trek IV's “talk to the whales” lesson. 01:50:00 – Akron Lawn-Mower Caper & Dumb-Crime Detour Ohio man allegedly flips school-district mowers on Facebook Marketplace—embezzlement or just brazen stupidity? They roast the scheme (and marketing tactics). 02:00:00 – Flying Cars Crash, Duct-Taped Commuter & Sign-Off Chinese VTOL “flying cars” collide during an airshow rehearsal; the crew imagines an Amazon drone commuter basket and jokes about a duct-taped rider sipping a Slurpee. Closing plugs and “watch the skies…and drones.” Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research ▀▄▀▄▀ CONTACT LINKS ▀▄▀▄▀ ► Phone: 614-388-9109 ► Skype: ourbigdumbmouth ► Website: http://obdmpod.com ► Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/obdmpod ► Full Videos at Odysee: https://odysee.com/@obdm:0 ► Twitter: https://twitter.com/obdmpod ► Instagram: obdmpod ► Email: ourbigdumbmouth at gmail ► RSS: http://ourbigdumbmouth.libsyn.com/rss ► iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/our-big-dumb-mouth/id261189509?mt=2

New research finds that since 2010 killer heat waves have become 200 times more likely, thanks to greenhouse gas emissions, and the scientists say about half of the increase in heatwaves can be attributed to big coal, big oil, big gas and cement. Also, while the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has been relatively quiet, last year damages from three major hurricanes ran to over 200 billion dollars and claims have stressed homeowners and insurance companies alike. We hear about Florida homeowners facing rising premiums and the cancellation of their insurance policies. And as the air turns crisp in the northern U.S., many of us are heading out for the autumn tradition of apple picking. The fascinating and complex science and history behind the iconic apple. --- You can help support our free public radio show and podcast, for free, by leaving a review on Apple Podcasts. Big Rich, TD, and Fletch dive into the unwritten rules of neighborhood engagement—when to wave, when to chat, and when to just mind your business. Then Rich and Fletch argue that a recent scuba diving robbery might actually be fair game if you're slick enough to pull it off. Plus, a look ahead at what's in store for everyone on the show this weekend—chaos, family time, and maybe a few bad decisions.
In August 1942, over 7,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in a largely forgotten landing, with only a small fraction surviving unscathed. The raid failed due to poor planning and lack of underwater reconnaissance, which left the Allies unaware of strong German coastal defenses and underwater obstacles. Inadequate submersible technology prevented effective pre-landing surveys, leading to heavy casualties and the inability to secure a foothold. Scientists had a rudimentary grasp of mixing air for prolonged underwater survival, with limited rebreather technology, poor understanding of oxygen toxicity, and inadequate gas supply systems. Two summers before D-Day, the Allies realized they desperately needed underwater intelligence to succeed in another beach invasion and win the war. Led by controversial biologists J.B.S. Haldane and Dr. Helen Spurway, an ingenious team of ragtag scientists worked in makeshift labs throughout the London Blitz. Amid a rain of bombs, they pioneered groundbreaking advances in underwater reconnaissance through painful and potentially fatal self-experiments. Their discoveries enabled the safe use of miniature submarines and breathing apparatuses, ultimately allowing the Allies to take the beaches of Normandy. Blast-injury specialist Dr. Rachel Lance, author of Chamber Divers: The Untold Story of the D-Day Scientists Who Changed Special Operations Forever, joined us a few years ago to discuss the CSS Hunley, a Confederate submersible used during the American Civil War, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat. We explore these experiments while bringing to life the men and women whose brilliance and self-sacrifice shaped the war’s outcome, including the danger they faced in their quest to enable Allied troops to breathe underwater.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I had a great conversation with Dr. Rachel Graham: Adventurer, scientist, and founder of MarAlliance. She's dedicated her life to protecting sharks, rays, & ocean wildlife by empowering local communities from Central America to Madagascar. Her story just might change how you see the sea. Brought to you this week by The Adventure Travel Conservation Fund Facebook Twitter Instagram Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Show Notes WHAT HAPPENED: There's this moment that I haven't stopped thinking about. A woman — a local fisher, part of a coastal community — who had spent years measuring dead sharks, told Rachel Graham she had a dream. Not a big one by the world's standards. But big for her: she wanted to scuba dive. There was just one problem: She couldn't swim. And another: She was terrified of sharks. But fast forward, and there she was. Certified. Scuba gear on. Underwater. Surrounded by the very creatures she once feared. That's not just a story about overcoming fear. It's a story about the power of inviting people into the process, not just preaching at them. And it changed her — and her community — forever. PRINCIPLE: People don't change because of data. They change because of connection. You can't create a lasting impact by staying in the ivory tower. Real change happens when you bring people in. Let them be part of the discovery. Respect their knowledge. And build from there. It's not about converting skeptics. It's about creating co-creators. TRANSITION: And yet, so many of us get stuck trying to do this work alone. We've got big visions, but we're either siloed, overwhelmed, or convinced we're not “qualified enough” to lead. We think we need a perfect degree, a perfect plan, or permission to start. We forget the truth: The people who make the biggest difference? Often, you don't have the “right” resume. But they do have the right mindset: curiosity, commitment, and community. THAT'S WHY: That's why this episode with Rachel Graham isn't just about shark conservation. It's about reimagining leadership, reframing “expertise,” and rebuilding ecosystems — both ecological and human — from the ground up. If you've ever felt like your dreams were too far out of reach, or your impact wasn't big enough… this one's going to shift you. CALL TO ACTION: If you've been quietly questioning your path or doubting your ability to make a difference, this episode is your permission slip. Get inspired by how Rachel built a global movement — one conversation (and one fish) at a time. Website: https://maralliance.org/ Linkedin Instagram
