This week I'm chatting with Tobi Skovron, best known for founding the co-working space empire that is Creative Cubes – offering flexible, serviced working spaces. The idea for Creative Cubes came to him when he was working in LA and running another venture in the pet space called The Pet Loo. There, he moved into a co-working space in Santa Monica in 2008 and just loved being surrounded by like-minded, go-getter, successful people. With Creative Cubes, Tobi really prioritises member experience and the brand's identity whilst also keeping a firm focus on its national expansion. He works hand in hand with landlords, asset owners & large institutions, future proofing their assets by tapping into a new wave of user demand with his company's products and services. In his time Tobi has earned dozens of awards for businesses he's built from ideas into thriving brands & category leaders with the best or nothing mindset. In fact, the company recently made its way onto The Australian's Top 100 Innovators list. Tobi is also a proud Jew, and says the essence of Creative Cubes is its Jewish “mishpochah” – “its family values in a commercial environment.” In essence, he says: “we exist to enable success.” –Follow The Founder Tapes on Instagram, TikTok and LinkedInSubscribe to The Founder Tapes on YouTube! Welcome to the Zero To 1 Thousand podcast with Mitch Cator. In this episode, Mitch interviews Tobi Skovron. Tobi Skovron has lived what many would see as the entrepreneurial dream. He came up with an idea, called it Pet Loo and started it with a $20,000 loan, and over 10 years built it into a multi-million dollar business that he eventually sold. He now is on a mission to make yet another entrepreneurial idea called Creative cubes.
Tobi Skovron, Founder, CreativeCubes.co Dog toilets and co-working spaces? An unlikely pairing. But if you talk to Tobi Skovron, you'll find they have one thing in common—they inspired him to create two passion-filled businesses and realize his dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. Skovron walked away from a promising career in medicine to pursue entrepreneurship, even though he had no idea what business he wanted to run. It wasn’t until Skovron got a dog that he came upon an idea that would take Australia by storm—an indoor dog toilet called Pet Loo. Piggybacking off of the success in Australia, Skovron decided to expand into the US market. He quickly faced a lot of challenges, however, since he made the move right as the 2008 recession hit. Skovron lost half his money right away. Starting over in Los Angeles, he realized the spare bedroom in his Venice Beach apartment was not the ideal environment for him to breathe life into his US expansion, so he joined a co-working space to rekindle his inspiration. There, Skovron realized a new passion for this collaborative environment, which ultimately led him to his next project. Skovron sold Pet Loo and started CreativeCubes.co, a hotel-like co-working environment that houses a curated community of passionate people. We here at Foundr have even used CreativeCubes.co to shoot many of our course videos! These days, Skovron's less interested in financial return, and more interested in providing quality experiences and fostering an environment of positivity and creativity. Listen in and get inspired by this journey from aspiring entrepreneur to two-time founder. Key Takeaways How the idea for Pet Loo became a reality (it was his wife's idea) The 10-year journey of designing, manufacturing, marketing, and selling Pet Loo How Skovron’s love of the co-working landscape led to the creation of his second successful product Why Skovron won’t scale his business for the sake of scaling
Getting your idea out there and into business is one thing, but how you take the next step to build it up can be a challenge. Hannah Vasicek is the Founder of the designer jewellery label Francesca. When she started selling her handmade designs at Hobart's Salamanca Market she had an idea that she might like to have her own shop one day. Less than 10 years later Francesca has a shopfront in Hobart and Melbourne with online sales going globally. Hannah explains her bumpy road to building the business and provides a glimpse into what's next for Francesca. Tobi Skovron is the Founder of co-working space CreativeCubes.Co. But first he invented the Pet Loo and built a business that he sold after a decade. Tobi describes the challenges of relocating to the US in the middle of the global financial crisis (GFC) and outlines his plan for enabling more entrepreneurs with CreativeCubes.Co. This is exactly how entrepreneurs create successful products! Tobi explains that in 2003, he and his then-girlfriend (now his wife) Simone lived in a two-bedroom apartment in Melbourne. He bought her a dog and they immediately faced the problem of having to walk the dog regularly, as potty-training seemed unrealistic. "There needed to be a better way to live with a dog although we could only afford an apartment," Skovron thought. Simone said, "If we could only get a patch of grass on the balcony." Bingo! Skovron invented the Pet Loo. Two years of R&D as well as patent and trademark filings and it was time.
