What happens when a turtle lives in a wishing well? Meatballs made out of eggplant?? Chickens as pets??? Find out about all this and more in this week's episode.  Interested in this week's recipe?  Here's the transcript for how to make it: This is a great recipe for the italian food lovers in the audience - today we are making meata ballas! Eggplant meatballs, that is. These meatballs were a big hit with my omnivorous friends as well my vegan ones. You'll need two eggplants, 6 cloves of garlic, two shallots, a pinch of salt and pepper, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 and a half cups of breadcrumbs, a teaspoon of oregano, and a half teaspoon of parsley. First and foremost, preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Roughly chop the eggplant, garlic, and shallots then place them on a large cookie sheet. Drizzle olive oil over the top and sprinkle salt and black pepper to taste. You're going to roast these for 35 minutes in the oven, or, until the edges are golden brown. When you remove the pan from the oven, reduce the heat from 400 to 350 degrees. In a food processor or blender, combine all the roasted veggies with a half cup of breadcrumbs as well as the rest of the spices. Only blend until the ingredients are just barely mixed, because you don't want the meatballs' texture to become overly homogenous. Add the other quarter cup of breadcrumbs and finish combining. Remove the mixture from the food processor and begin forming into one or two inch balls, which you can then place on a well greased pan. Cook them for thirty minutes, rotating halfway through, on 350 degrees, and enjoy on pasta, in sandwiches, or on anything else your heart desires.

For all of you Empire TV show fans out there, you were probably all shocked when Lucious Lyon was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG).  I first heard about this MG back in the early 1980s, when a young german shepherd puppy came into the veterinary hospital where I worked and displayed all the tell-tale symptoms.  With further testing, it was confirmed that this poor pup, who was as cute as a button, was suffering from MG, and at that time, there really was not an adequate way to treat him so the owners opted for euthanasia.  It was heartbreaking all around and I never forgot that little puppy.  Well now, things have really changed and MG is being managed and treated successfully... if it's diagnosed and treated early. To help talk about this wonderful change, I've invited pet parent Lois Rinehimer to the program to talk about her special dog, a goldendoodle named Joy. And  after our halftime break, Charleston Veterinary Referral Center's Dr. Katherine Crook, will talk about Joy's case from a veterinary perspective and explain what every pet parent should be aware of in terms of watching for signs of MG.

Some years ago, when I was a Lieutenant with Orange County Animal Control, I was asked to train deputy sheriff recruits in the area of dealing with protective animals at crime scenes or other emergency locations.  This came about after a beloved family pet was shot and killed by deputies who had responded to a burglary-in-process call at a residence.  That event made it painfully clear that many law-enforcement personnel had little to no training in dealing with protective animals and resorted to immediate lethal force when confronted with a family pet.  Of course, one of the best bits of information all emergency personnel can use before they arrive to the scene of an emergency is whether or not a pet is there.  And thanks to Smart911, a new service for pet owners, this information is being made available to emergency response agencies.  Jessica Rose from RAVE mobile Safety will be by shortly to tell us about all the details. In the past, I've mentioned that I support companies that take a cruelty free approach to their products and one of the most amazing companies in this regard in the John Paul Mitchell Systems salon products company.  The co-founder, John Paul DeJoria is a huge animal advocate, and his non-profit John Paul Pet Pal is making huge strides into helping to care for dogs of deployed military personnel so that no pets need to be given up.  It's a pretty amazing program and Gina Dial, the VP of Sales & Marketing for John Paul Pet, will be stopping by shortly to tell us all about it.   And after our halftime break, Robin Ganzert, the President and CEO of the American Humane Association will be sharing some terrific stories about the animal stars who are watched over and kept safe by her wonderful organization!
