2026 Show Notes Addendum: As we prepare what is slated to become our final ever installment of Nerd Noise Radio - Channel F, I felt it apropos - poetic, even, to make this month's rerun be of our very first ever installment.   As always, please keep in mind how much worse my production quality was all the way back in late 2017 than it is today (both in terms of tools and techniques), and give all that a little grace. A snapshot of a moment in time. However, as you'll see from the even earlier late 2016 rebroadcast included in this transmission, even with as bad as late 2017 production was, it was already much improved over where I had gotten my start about a year earlier. Now, please, enjoy this maiden voyage of our betas and bonuses outlet - including, not one, but BOTH of the two most important, transformative, meaningful, and cherished Christmas memories of my life!   -------------------------- original show notes -------------------------- Tales of the glories of Christmases long long ago.......and tales of the glories of an all-new Channel from the Nerd Noise Radio Network - plus a certain special "re-run" embedded at the end! Merry Christmas (etc), Noisers!!! p.s. First Appearance of the new Nerd Noise Radio logo and background design scheme for 2018. I hope you like it! It's purposely lo-fi, but hope that comes off in the good way, rather than the bad way. Also, as a fledgling (and I mean SUUUUUUPER fledgling) student of Japanese, I just couldn't resist. ;-)

(Orig pub date: 6/21/22) In the early morning hours of October 17, 1953, a frightened, battered woman named Diane Wells told a horrific tale to police. She said intruders had broken into the top-floor penthouse apartment she shared with her husband Cecil, murdered him, beat her, and then made their escape. It was an especially sensational story because 31-year-old "blonde bombshell" Diane Wells was nicknamed "the most beautiful woman in Alaska", and Cecil (twenty years her senior) was a wealthy and well-known Fairbanks businessman. There were suspicions, however, that Diane was lying. It was soon learned that she was having an affair with a local musician and also being comforted by a dance instructor who worked downstairs. My guest is James T. Bartlett, author of "The Alaskan Blonde: Sex, Secrets, and the Hollywood Story that Shocked America". He shares details from his research into the almost 70 year old cold case, including an account of Diane's own tragic end. 2026 Show Notes Addendum:    To round out our second (and final) visit to the realm of backwards VGM (and very closely related non-VGM) on Nerd Noise Radio, let's replay the 2020 original series, which was also a two-parter, but instead of being two "equal billing" parts, it was a one part "episode proper" and then a supplemental Ch F "F-isode" bonus. In addition to being one of my all-time favorite projects to work on in show history, the series also marked an important turning point in show history as the first installment was our last ever NNR broadcast on the main feed to be produced in GarageBand on MacOS (except for the deliberate call-back that was C1E75 in 2023), and the F-isode was my first ever production in Audacity and Ardour in Linux (then Ubuntu Studio (KDE), now, Fedora (GNOME)). Original Show Notes below are largely faithful to the original with one MASSIVE exception: the tracklist is now populated with all the relevant track info, where it was originally withheld to keep the mystery and mystique alive.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Original Show Notes (modified to show track names on 04/20/2026):   ------------------------------------------------------------------------   You are tuned to Nerd Noise Radio – Channel F. Today's “F-isode” is significant not only for being only the second F-isode we've had in over a year, when they used to be quite a bit more common, but is also significant for being the first ever production of Nerd Noise Radio of any type to be produced entirely on Linux. Historically, the show has been produced on Mac. With a small backlog of previously-produced, but not-yet-released music blocks that were, of course, produced on the Mac still in reserve for future episodes, it will be some time yet before the Mac presence fades from the show completely. But it is my hope to do the lion's share of future all-new production on Linux moving forward. So, the shift will be a glide, rather than a snap. But that shift starts...here.    Longtime listeners of the show will know full well what a Channel F F-isode is, but a pair of really beautiful things happened early this month which will have brought new attention to the show, from faces as near and dear as my fellow Des Moinesers (and surrounding communities), to as far-flung as Linux fans all the world over. For an explanation of what Channel F is, and how it relates to Nerd Noise Radio as a whole for the newcomers, as well as the details of who and what the new faces are, and how all that came about, see below. Also, for a descripton of how this F-isode relates to our April Fool's episode, “Backtracks”, see the blog....or just sit, back, relax, and enjoy, as you listen to.....”The OTHER 50”!     Timestamps provided, but track details withheld for now in case anyone wanted to play the guessing game on the tracks. A follow-up blog post on April 30th will provide the entire track list information for both Backtracks and for today's outing. So, be on the lookout for that.    In the meantime, enjoy!    Tracklist (ALL TRACKS ARE PLAYED IN REVERSE - except Intro)! The mini-article appears in the April Issue of the magazine which can be viewed online (Link below). In addition to that, Jason Evangelho, a tech-writer for Forbes Magazine who focuses on Linux very generously boosted my tweets about my first production in Linux, which went on to become the most liked and retweeted tweet in my history on the platform. I make it a point to look at “the numbers” as little as possible, so I don't know how many (if any) of the new faces stuck around. But certainly a number of them at least had a peek. If you are a new face, either brought to the show through the Cityview article, or through Jason's buff of my tweet, get a hold of me to let me know you're here!     Presuming we did have at least a few stick around, I should give an explanation of what Channel F is, relative to Channel 1, and Archive Super Bonuses, so you know how this show works. I will do so at length on the blogspot version of this episode, where the blog format is more accommodating of lengthiness. But I will give you a brief overview here:     Channel 1: This is “the show proper”. These are “the actual episodes”. On average, 10 fresh episodes a year (with reruns to fill in the blanks). Other than extraordinary circumstances, they follow a standard “enhanced mixtape” format: a short, semi-standard intro, and standard housekeeping outro bookending a winding, twisting journey through sound. We have had quite the spate of non-standard “Channel 1” Episodes of late though, so for the newcomers, I wanted to stress what “normal” looks like. We don't anticipate having anything else non-standard for several months moving forward.    Channel F: This is my side-outlet for bonuses, betas, extras. It can be virtually anything. And additional mixtape music block (like today), but has been all sorts of things. We even had one that was an exposition on a certain episode's outro. Anything that doesn't fit in Channel 1, but that I still want to have full attention (podcast feed, blog, social media, Archive.org, etc) becomes a Channel F “F-isode”.    Super Bonuses: These are for the times where I have something that I felt was worth producing, and felt was worth putting out there, but did not want to clog up the podcast feed, or the blog, or social media with. Generally, it takes the form of remixes and twists on existing content. Since they only come out on Archive, and not anywhere else, and since they're not really advertised, this creates a nice “underground” quality to them. I usually drop hints inside Episodes and F-isodes if there are any Super Bonuses planned. But beyond that, a person just needs to know to be on the lookout. They will release even less consistently than F-isodes, but will also tend to be in bursts around certain episodes that are rich for alternate twists on their content.    See the blogspot version of this episode if you'd like to know more about these. Link below. Meanwhile, our next all-new episode is planned for August, though I do have some really great reruns lined up for the months between. Even those will still constitute much more of a “return to normalcy” for the show than what our past several months of fresh content offers, so a great chance to “get to know us” I hope you will enjoy! We also have a secondary podcast feed which is dedicated entirely to reruns, which will feature reruns different than the ones on the main feed, if you wish to explore even more Nerd Noise Radio history. It can be found on your podcatcher of choice by the name “Nerd Noise Radio Reruns”.    Cheers!    Link to the Cityview Article:    http://dmcityview.com/CityviewApril2020/html5/index.html?page=1&noflash (page 50)    You can find previous articles by Jeff by searching www.dmcityview.com or as compiled on Muck Rack:    https://muckrack.com/jeff-pitts/articles    Link to Jason Evangelho's Forbes articles  (@killyourfm on Twitter)    https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/#18ee68a0d36f    Link to Blogspot version of today's “F-isode” (for the long version the Channels descriptions, etc.)    https://nerdnoiseradio.blogspot.com/2020/04/channel-f-backtracks-other-50.html

Original Show Notes below are largely faithful to the original with one MASSIVE exception: the tracklist is now populated with all the relevant track info, where it was originally withheld to keep the mystery and mystique alive. Lastly: in case anyone is wondering what on earth is happening in the outro: I figured since it would be backwards, and nobody would ever hear it forward unless they either took the initiative to reverse the file themselves, or else find the [quote] "UNBACKED" version on Archive.org, they'd never know what on earth was being said, I decided to forego the standard outro script, and just go nuts. I read a chocolate chip cookie recipe I found online on the spot, and included snippets from every previous episode blooper reel in show history to that point as well as various other sound clips, such as slow-mo vids of my kids, and fresh snippets provided by my brother-in-law Brian Peterson. Anyway, that's what's happening in the outro. I wanted it to be as preposterous and baffling and chaotic as possible!   ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Original Show Notes (modified to show track names on 04/20/2026):   ------------------------------------------------------------------------   Today's broadcast is C1E52 for Wayback Wednesday, April 1st, 2020. It's April 1st, dear listeners, and we haven't had a retrospective in AGES! After members of the Abenaki tribe captured her and her newborn infant in March of 1697, they killed her baby on a forced march north. Duston got her revenge by killing and scalping ten of her captors, including six children, and fleeing by canoe back to her home in Haverhill, Massachusetts. (Orig. Pub Date: 11/10/21) In January of 1923, a 20-year-old dancer named Fritzie Mann left home to meet a mysterious man for what she told her mother was a house party. When she was discovered dead on a remote beach a few miles north of San Diego, police were puzzled by the clues. Was it an accident, suicide, or murder? The fact that she was pregnant deepened the mystery even further. Soon two men – a Hollywood actor and a doctor – became the primary suspects in the case, and one would eventually be put on trial for murder. My guest is James Stewart, author of “Mystery at the Blue Sea Cottage: A True Story of Murder in San Diego's Jazz Age”. He shares details about strange death of Fritzie Mann, considered by some to be San Diego's very own Black Dahlia, and offers intriguing theories on what might really have happened to her. Wow. I was just looking at the last couple of Months and we have missed a lot of episodes. I'm not going to lie, I was in London, so this is my fault.  This is Feb 3rd, so it is the day the music died, and this podcast always celebrates this solemn day with a respectful discussion. We talk about flavor savers (time is a flat circle), and then I play a bad parody song and then drop the hammer Russ style with a good one.  This is all of the episode I listened t,o but I started with a Big Johnson joke so I know this is a great ep.    Next Week: Are you Randy baby? Randy Newman!     I'm a "new man" because I have decided to change my life.           I am leaving my wife and kids.                 Does that make you, Randy?               If so, give me a call, because I am so lonely.                  Just like when I gave money to my friend Lee.  Then he was hardly Friendly.... he never paid me back!  Now I am friendless.               Because I am hanging out with my friend Les. He is great, much better than Lee.   But my friend Les changed his last name when he married the old Moore widow..... Now Les is Moore.

2026 Show Notes Addendum: Our last [for now] Ch 2 rerun (our last Ch 2 rerun specifically shared with incoming NintenDomain listeners in mind in the wake of the recent Ch F "Channel Trey" one-off) This was the first episode of the last season of Ch 2 - the one where we announced to the listeners that Ch 2 would be shutting down, as well as the episode where I revealed my then very recently discovered African and Jewish ancestry. This episode also has the distinction of being my personal favorite episode in Ch 2 history with perhaps the lone exception of the 5 1/2hr long "C2F: 'Finally our Final Finale'" series retrospective. You can also hear our very last non-retrospective Ch 2, C2E20: "....all good things...." if you look back to the NNR Dec 2025 podcast feed. And with that.....NintenDomain fans now have had a great look at the seeds to what went on to make "Channel Trey", while long-time NNR fans get a look back on a handful of really great moments in Ch 2 (and "quasi-channel 2") history. Orig. Pub. Date 9/6/2021) On April 24th, 1891, a Bowery prostitute named Carrie Brown (known locally as "Old Shakespeare") was found murdered and mutilated in the seedy East River Hotel. With the Jack the Ripper murders unsolved and still news, many believed that the notorious killer had traveled across the Atlantic to continue his bloody work in the United States - and this was his first victim. My guest is George R. Dekle Sr., former Florida prosecutor and author of the new book "The East River Ripper: The Mysterious 1891 Murder of Old Shakespeare". He talks about this sensational case, including the arrest and trial of the enigmatic Ameer Ben Ali, better known as "Frenchy", and offers his thoughts on who really murdered Carrie Brown. 2026 Show Notes Adendum: This was the very first "official episode" of Ch 2 - approx 9 months after Hugues and I's "fun one-off", which at the time had no strings attached! PRODUCTION CAVEATS:  Just like the 2019 one-off, this was recorded using an M-Audio MobilePre XLR-to-USB audio interface and AudioTechnica AT2020 condenser mic, and was recorded down in a very echoey basement room. Also, I hadn't [yet] started editing out the "ums" yet. However, unlike the 2019 one-off, I had moved onto Linux by this point, so it was produced in a mix of Audacity and Ardour, rather than in GarageBand and was produced on a 2017 Dell Latitude 7480 laptop (docked to an external monitor, KBM, and sound system) rather than on a 2014 Mac Mini. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------Original 2020 Show Notes------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's the Dawning of a new Era! Nerd Noise Radio
[RERUN] "Nerd Noise Game Club" - the one-off which later became "Channel 2" (orig. 12/19/2019)

2026 Show Notes Addendum: If you're a NintenDomain listener who is new to NNR from Trey and I's "Nerd Noise Radio - Channel Trey" one-off simulcast collaboration, then this rerun should be uniquely interesting to you! So, "Channel Trey" was a one-off between Trey and I, in the style of an episode of the now-defunct "Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2" which I used to do with Hugues Johnson of Retro Game Club (so, another "so and so Johnson" out of Chicago), only with Trey at the mic instead of Hugues. It was in the exact style and format of Channel 2.  Well, funnily enough, what went on to become Channel 2 also began life as a similar fun one-off between Hugues and I all the way back in December 2019. And here is that 2019 one-off. Hugues and I's 6yr earlier parallel to Trey and I's recent outing. This was before I knew I was AuDHD (Autistic + ADHD), and before I knew I possessed African and Jewish ancestry. It was also before I started editing out the "ums". But it's remarkable to me how "different yet the same" it feels to our official Ch 2 episodes which came later, or "Channel Trey" which rose from the ashes of the now-defunct Ch 2. PRODUCTION CAVEATS: At this point, I had not switched from Mac to Linux, so I was using Garageband in MacOS on a late 2014 Mac Mini. Also, I had not yet upgraded to the Focusrite 4i4 (3rd Gen) XLR-to-USB interface, still using the lesser M-Audio MobilePre, and had not yet upgraded to the RODE Podmic dynamic microphone, let alone my current Shure SM7B, but was still using my original AudioTechnica AT2020 condenser mic, and lastly, was recording in a very very echoey room with no noise cancellation. But apart from inferior hardware, software, and production techniques, and apart from this being my very first time ever doing something even remotely like this, the seeds of all NNR Channel 2 episodes, as well as the seeds of "Channel Trey" are all very much present here! This is where it all started: Channel 2, Channel Trey.....all of it! My intent for this month is to also rerun not only our very first  official Ch 2 episode from Sept 2020, but also C1E16: "Songs with Words", the first episode of the last season, and what in my personal opinion is the very best Ch 2 episode of all, perhaps save for C2F, our "series finale". Also, if you look back to December 2025 on the NNR podcast feed, you can also catch C2E20: "...all good things...", our final non-retrospective episode of Ch 2. So, if your first experience with Nerd Noise Radio was "Channel Trey", then you'll get to hear a lot of the context behind that episode! In any case, enjoy the rogue one-off that became an entirely new Nerd Noise Radio program, which would ultimately culminate in yet another rogue one-off with Trey Johnson of NintenDomain!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------Original show notes---------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. John of "Nerd Noise Radio" and Hugues Johnson of "Retro Game Club" (and "The Retro League" alum) join forces to cover and discuss some of their favorite pieces of VGM from the 2010's. It's about what you'd expect if you put Retro Game Club / The Retro League, Nerd Noise Radio, Legacy Music Hour, and an entire decade of VGM in a blender....ooh, or maybe the hadron collider! For the time-being, this is just a one-time "one-off" special, but if there is enough demand from either, or especially both of our respective listener pools, then we're open to making this an ongoing (albeit occasional, and likely irregular) thing. "Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 2", maybe? ;-) Anyway, the power is yours, listeners! Make your voices heard! In the meanwhile? 2025 Show Notes addendum:   In light of the release of C1E100 (the final "non-retrospective" Ch 1), I thought it would also be good to release C2E20 (the final "non-retrospective" Ch 2) as a nice tie-in. Though my production quality has improved somewhat since late 2024, it is nowhere even remotely close to the quantum leap that is the difference between my Dec 2025 and my Jan 2017 production quality difference with C1E1. Channel 2 was a COMPLETELY different kind of show, though. Rather than being a vaguely NPR-esque mixtape-style program that was "less a podcast per se" and more "a late nite FM radio music program which just so happened to go out over the podosphere", Ch 2 was a "proper podcast" with a co-host out of Chicago and myself taking turns sharing tracks and talking about them. We wrapped the show at the end of 2024 because my co-host had been podcasting since 2009, and would be turning 50 in 2025, and so he decided at the end of 2023 that he would be retiring completely from podcasting at the end of 2024, and I didn't feel like replacing him, so we just wrapped it together. Anyway, since we referenced C2E20 and even featured a few tracks from it in C1E100, and since we're rerunning C1E1, I figured I'd rerun this too. By the way: that one upcoming Ch F one-off with Trey Johnson of NintenDomain and W.A.R.T. Radio will be in this exact format - only, obviously, a different co-host.   Anyway....enjoy! Also, this rerun will release on Christmas Eve. So, Merry Christmas to anyone who celebrates it - and a belated Happy Hannukah to anyone who celebrates it instead (I celebrate both, myself!) :-D   ------------------------------------------------------   orig show notes   Today's Broadcast is C2E20, for Theme Thursday, Oct 24th, 2024. All good things must come to an end. Today is the final “regular” (as in, “final non-retrospective” episode - and as opposed to “final all time” episode). 2025 Show Notes addendum: With C1E100, you just heard how Ch 1 ends. Now, hear how Ch 1 began!   Also, C1E100 ends with a production deliberately designed to be as close to the much much MUCH worse production quality of the original episodes. With today's rerun, you can compare it to the C1E100 ending to see how well or how poorly 45yr old "2025 St. John" did at emulating and impersonating that clunky, and untrained, but "starry-eyed", "pocket full of dreams" 36yr old St. John from C1E1. I definitely want to know what you think at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com or on social media or Discord! Lastly, for as atrocious as the production quality is on this Dec 2016 production (Jan 2017 release), it is actually the [by far] superior version of the episode. In Oct 2016, I produced beta versions of the first four episodes, and shared them under the pseudonym of "Disco Santa's House of Impossible Conundrums" so I could put them out there for a very limited audience to solicit feedback without a mass release (this was before I was using cloud storage, mind you). The final releases of those four episodes were amended based on the feedback received from everyone from Mike Levy of XVGM, to Pieness64, to even Stephen Hill of NPR's decades-running New Age / Space / World / Ambient late-night FM radio program: Hearts of Space. Well, recently, I found the original beta versions of those first four episodes , and here is a Google Drive link to the episode 1 beta - the only NNR production to use an alternate version of the "St. John NNR shout". The version we ended up going with was recorded during the episode 2 beta and applied to everything thereafter. So this episode 1 beta is the only time in show history where an episode opens with an alternate St. John NNR shout - and boy is it pathetic! This one was recorded with me sitting down. The ep 2 beta shout (which eventually became the "official shout") was recorded standing up. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days.

NERD NOISE RERUNS: C1E60 - "Listener Picks - vol. 2" (orig released 12/23/2021)

2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month!  Today's rerun is the second installment, from December of 2021 And it is less of a sequel per se, and more of an omake (that is, more of an "outtakes" episode). While vol 1 was 40 tracks long and selected by 18 contributors, their total body of contributions was not 40, but instead, an absolutely insane 100!! Well, even in 2025, we'd never do an episode 100 tracks long! Such a mixtape could possibly hit 5hrs long, which is too long even for St. John! :-D  So, what I did instead in 2018 was take the 100 and narrow it down to 40, with the 60 track remainder kept in reserve, intended for a Channel F "F-isode" to immediately follow as a bonus and feature the remaining 60. This bonus was to feature Trey Johnson of the NintenDomain and W.A.R.T. Radio podcasts as co-host, and be in the original format of W.A.R.T. Radio as a "return the favor" tribute to Trey in return for W.A.R.T. changing formats to match the NNR format. It was also going to feature an interview with a composer, spearheaded by Trey. But schedules did not align, and so the F-isode never happened! Today's rerun, eventually released years later in 2021 as a numbered "official" Ch 1 episode is essentially what that F-isode would've been - only with no interview (scheduling conflicts). Trey would still go on to co-host with me, though. Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2021 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. If you are new, and this is your first exposure to NNR, and you enjoyed the content, but were put off by the production, either go back and listen to a recent episode, such as C1E98 or C1E96....or perhaps even better, keep your eyes peeled for C1E99, which is basically this all over again, but at 2025's far improved production quality standards! In fact, in this case, the situation is even worse! My side of the recording session with Trey was lost, and so we had to fallback on his side of the Zoom call for my voice, where I was using a super cheap wireless headset. So my voice quality sounds especially terrible. My apologies if any of that detracts from this otherwise excellent and joyous outing! And with that, please enjoy the very non-standard-formatted - Listener Picks - vol 2, thanks again to Trey for lending his voice and talents in joining me to make this one happen, and please keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 3rd (and final) installment! Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes:   Today's Broadcast is C1E60, for Theme Thursday, December 23rd, 2021 - our final episode of our very non-standard two-year long “Season 4”. So it is fitting that we'd end such a wildly non-standard season - filled with primarily wildly non-standard content already - with such a dramatically non-standard Channel 1 episode. Today's episode abandons the customary Channel 1 “great big music block” mixtape format for a modified take on the original W.A.R.T. Radio format, featuring Trey Johnson of Nintendomain / W.A.R.T. Radio and St. John. Today's episode is also a “Lost Level”, as it was originally intended to be a Channel F bonus “F-isode” to supplement “C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol. 1” from December 2018, and was intended to release right after it, in a nearly identical presentation to what you receive today. As such, today's broadcast shall be “Listener Picks - vol. 2”. All music, other than the background music for the speaking portions was curated by listeners of the show, and are the roughly 60 remaining unused tracks from the pool of roughly 100 that were offered up for C1E40 in 2018, of which only 40 were used.    p.s. We apologize for the uncharacteristically poor audio quality on St. John's speaking voice. Details available upon request, but the short version is that John had technical difficulties on his end of the recording with "the good mic", but fortunately, we had a lower-quality backup recording on Trey's end over Zoom using St. John's built-in laptop mic. The sound quality is diminished, but the content is still preserved.     Note: All Speaking Portions originally produced in December 2021 by St. John     01: Intro     Timestamps: 00:00:00 - 00:05:18  Runtime: 05:18  Emceed by: Trey and St. John     02: Phillip Vaughn Music Block     Timestamps (Including Introduction): 00:05:18 - 2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month!  Today's rerun is the inaugural installment, from all the way back in 2018. It features a semi-standard intro and outro, and a standard mixtape - with the exception of the fact that every track is selected by the listeners (40 tracks - 18 contributors) - and that the intro and outro are guest-curated by a collage of 11 of those same 18 contributors. It was also, at the time, the longest non-retrospective episode in show history - and featured a long, glorious outtakes reel at the end! C1E99 will share a great many of these same attributes! It will feature 70 tracks, collectively selected by 8 listeners (6 of which also contributed to today's rerun (and 3 of which were also featured in vol 2). At just under 3.5hrs, it will also be the longest mixtape in non-retrospective Ch 1 history (even if this new record nearly doubles the [then] record which the 2018 episode set). And it will also feature a semi-standard intro and outro, largely guest-hosted by a collage of the contributing listeners. In fact, unlike today's rerun, this time every single track contributor also contribute their voices to the intro and outro (except for the one which prizes anonimity and requested a text-to-speech be used in his place). And I also anticipate 99 to feature a fairly decent outtakes reel - though not quite as robust and spectacular as today's rerun. So, where vol 2 is less a "sequel" to vol 1 per se, and more of an "omake" (or an "outtakes") of vol 1, the upcoming vol 3 will be the true sequel to today's rerun. The long-awaited "echo". The "let's do this exact same thing one more time". In fact, due to a joint failure of double-checking from both St. John and the contributing listener, C1E99 will even feature one track that was featured in today's rerun. So be on the look out for that and see if you can spot which one it is before the reveal! And yes, it even was the same contributing listener in both episodes! D'oh! :-) Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2018 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. And with that, please enjoy the absolute block party that is C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol 1, and keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 2nd (rerun) and 3rd (fresh) installments! Cheers! Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is Episode 40 for Theme Thursday, December 20th, 2018. One of the men murdered was my guest's great-great uncle Emory Smith. As the police investigated the list of compelling suspects grew, but a powerful cover-up appeared to be in play, ultimately preventing the perpetrators from facing justice.  Former forensic detective Karen Smith joins me today to talk about her extensive personal investigation into this 88-year-old cold case, and she shares some of the shocking evidence she uncovered during her research. Karen is the host of the popular podcast "Shattered Souls", available wherever podcasts are heard.  Shattered Souls at Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/shattered-souls/id679462887 Shattered Souls at Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4ny3a6GvvVkMGPz0TTZRpP Learn more about your ad choices. 2025 Rerun Notes: In commemoration of this month release of the last-ever Mishmash Monday on Channel 1, I thought I'd rerun the first two installments of the series - both from all the way back in 2017 (Season 1 of the show). Therefore, all the obvious caveats on "absolutely atrocious production quality" and blah blah blah (especially on C1E10, the earlier of the two releases). Though this rerun is "officially" and "canonically" the first "Mishmash Monday" (free play) episode in Nerd Noise Radio history, it is really "Mishmash Monday in name only" as it wasn't truly a free play. Instead, it was designed with a very specific purpose and with each track housing a very specific meaning. Though I explain and elaborate fully in a 2019 special expanded rebroadcast of this episode we called "Chandlerfest", which I'll link to below, for now, the tl;dr is that this mixtape was actually made in commemoration for a friend who died entirely too young in Dec 2016, and whose absence we still feel regularly from here in 2025. When I got the news, I left work, went home, and turned my grief into tortured energy, and made this mixtape, with the design philosophy being to use the tracks and the particular arch of the track order to tell the story of the emotions of those of us left behind in his wake as we processed the news of his departure. With this being a 2017 episode, all the obvious caveats on "absolutely atrocious production quality" (especially episodes from the first half of 2017, which were even worse than those from the second half.) But content-wise, this early outing remains one of the most important episodes of Nerd Noise Radio....ever. Investigators would soon accuse his wife Gladys of plotting the doctor's murder with the help of his young cowhand and her lover, Alvin Williams. Stunning details of her deception would be revealed during the trial, including accusations that she was a bigamist who had left multiple husbands in her wake. Though today's rerun is officially, canonically the "second" Mishmash Monday, it's actually the first "for real" Mishmash Monday. The first "actual free play episode". Not that it was produced before C1E10, but released later, but that C1E10 was a "Mishmash Monday" in name only, and was definitely not a true free play. I'll explain in that episode's rerun. But for now, numbers and dates aside, this was our first actual "free play" episode in NNR history. And even though the production quality is so absolutely horrible, I still regard this episode as an excellent collection of music! Easily in our top 50% of show history, and perhaps even top 25%. So, enjoy! (Orig pub date: 2/3/24) On August 17th, 1849, London police officers made a grisly discovery at the home of George and Maria (born Marie de Roux) Manning. Her former beau, Patrick O'Connor, had been buried under the floor. A nationwide hunt for the couple would follow, and after that a trial and executions. The murder case would grip London so fervently that Madame Tussaud would later add wax versions of the couple to her infamous Chamber of Horrors. My guest today is Gavin Whitehead, creator, writer and narrator of The Art of Crime podcast, which is currently in its third season. (Note: At the end of this encore interview, I reconnect with Gavin for a teaser on his fifth season, just recently released, called "Murder by the Book"). 2025 Rerun Notes: A very unique episode in show history, the only time we ever did a "ThreeFer". It's a bit of a long episode, and this was back when I was still using a cheaper mic and less sophisticated production techniques, but I still remain very proud of this episode from a content perspective. [2025 Addendum] Our third and final rerun which we're releasing for July, and third and final rerun celebrating the memory of Masters of VGM (“MoVGM”), and our third and final of my bids to drum up excitement for the “VGM Hall of Fame” (“HoF”)  series spearheaded by Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself (as well as any other shows which have elected to join us in the time since my drafting this on July 2nd), we look, at last, to MoVGM's final year: 2024. The Theme of 2024's MoVGM was a focus on female and LGBTQIA+ (particularly trans) composers. And Nerd Noise Radio's contribution for this year was a Channel 1 featuring the soundtrack to the game Celeste, composed by the fabulous trans composer Lena Raine. The pride connection goes even deeper, though, as the game was written and designed by Maddie Thorson, who is also trans, and upon whom the [also also trans] protagonist, Madelaine is also based. From a production standpoint, this is going to be pretty close to on par with a 2025 production as it is using all the same recording hardware, and most of the same production techniques, but may not quite match the current crop due to my using less sophisticated monitoring headphones resulting in a final mix which might be a tad on the “hot” side. Either way, it's a showcase of great people making great music to a great game with a great message. So, we are quite pleased to present C1E86: “The Celeste Soundtrack” (originally released 06/15/2024). Enjoy ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is C1E86 for Soundtrack Saturday, June 15th, 2024. [2025 Addendum….sorry for the long-winded] Our second of three reruns which we're releasing for July, and second of three reruns celebrating the memory of Masters of VGM (“MoVGM”), and the second of three of my bids to drum up excitement for the “VGM Hall of Fame” (“HoF”)  series spearheaded by Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself (as well as any other shows which have elected to join us in the time since my drafting this on July 2nd) is just one of, this time, four contributions we made to the series that year. I'll share links to the other three below, as well as two other bonus links which are acutely relevant to two of them (as well as to C1E96, our “fresh episode” from last month). The Theme of 2023's MoVGM was sort of the opposite of the year prior. 2022's theme was a celebration of “big named composers”, like Yuzo Koshiro or Nobuo Uematsu, or The Follin Brothers and so on. Names that probably EVERYBODY already knows, 2023's theme was “unsung and undersung composers”. Names that were not nearly as well-known as they should be. And so, our Channel 2 contribution followed the same format and design philosophy of our 2022, only with the opposite theme. It's a little longer, though, because in addition to the same “four and four” as before, we added a ninth and final pair - tracks by unknown composers”. Production notes on this episode relative to the 2022 rerun: by this time, two major changes had happened: 1) I had upgraded from the $100 RODE Podmic I had been using to the current $400 Shure SM7B that I use today, and 2) I had started actively editing out “Umm”s from our conversation. I can't guarantee that I caught every single one of them. But they'll certainly be much less present and much less invasive. It still won't rise to the level of a 2025 production (and sounds a little worse with the SM7B's presence boost turned on at the time, which I've since turned off), but it comes appreciably closer than C2E8. Links to the other 2023 Nerd Noise Radio MoVGM contributions: C1E76: “The Big Sound of the Little Guy - vol. 2” (originally released 06/01/2023 - the episode which kicked off MoVGM 2023 at large): https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/ch-1-noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-c1e76-the-big-sound-of-the-little-guy--vol-2   Ch F: “Highlights from ‘Stray'” (originally released 06/29/2023): https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/channel-f-highlights-fromstray-masters-of-vgm   Ch F: Composer Mini-Focus: rayjkayj (originally released  07/26/2023 - also, this might've been the final MoVGM 2023 episode as well, meaning, I might've gotten to provide both “bookends” to that year's celebration!) https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/channel-f-composer-minifocus-rayjkayj-masters-of-vgm   Lastly, two bonus links which relate to the above: 1) C1E30: Big Sound of the Little Guy - vol. 1 (originally released 09/14/2018 - apologies for the atrocious production quality and anemic intro, but the music collection itself is GREAT!) - not only is this obviously relevant to C1E76 above, but it's also relevant to last month's C1E96, which was (unofficially, but for all intents and purposes) “Big Sound of the Little Guy vol 3”: https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/nerd-noise-radio-channel-1-noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-podcast-c1e30-the-big-sounds-of-the-little-guy-vol-1   2) C1E73: “UNKAYJ THE RAYJ” (originally released ) - guest-hosted by rayjkayj himself, the above minifocus on rayjkayj was comprised of outtakes from this original episode: https://terraplayer.com/shows/nerd-noise-radio/ch-1-noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-c1e73-unkayj-the-rayj …and with that, I'll leave you with C2E13: “Songs of the Unsung” (originally released 07/06/2023) - a title which I came up with, and if we're being honest, I'm probably WAY too proud of!). :-D Enjoy!   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast, for Theme Thursday, July 6th, 2023 is an episode of the Masters of VGM - season 2 (www.mastersofvgm.com) and is a focus on music from unsung and undersung composers - on an episode we're calling “Songs of the Unsung”.   Tracklist:   01) John's 1st composer (of 4): C418 (aka Daniel Rosenfeld)   John's Track: Dreiton - Minecraft - Multiplatform Earcatcher - 00:00:00 Music - 00:00:07 Introduction - 00:08:16 Top of the Show pt 1 - 00:09:12 Discussion - 00:12:00 Top of the Show pt 2 - 00:14:19 Hugues' Track: Enforcer Brittanica - Catacomb Snatch - PC Music - 00:28:44 Discussion - 00:32:23   02) Hugues' 1st composer: Takahiko Abe   Hugues' Track: Templo del Sol - Asuteka II - PC88 Music - 00:37:18: Discussion - 00:39:31 John's Track: Machi - Susanoou Densetsu - PC Engine Music - 00:46:36 Discussion - 00:48:24   03) John's 2nd composer: Soichi Terada   John's Track: Subspace 2 - Fantavision 202X - PC Music - 00:56:06 Discussion - 00:59:27 Hugues' Track: TV Tower - Ape Escape on the Loose - PSP Music - 01:03:30 Discussion - 01:06:54   04) Hugues' 2nd composer: Katsumi Tanaka   Hugues' Track: Memories of Puyo Puyo - Puyo Puyo CD - PC Engine Music - 01:11:09 Discussion - 01:13:25 John's Track: Black Hole Anomalies - Space Megaforce - SNES Music - 01:19:17 Discussion - 01:21:41   05) John's 3rd composer: Hikoshi Hashimoto   John's Track: Zena Lan (Heavily Armored) - Cosmic Carnage - 32X Music - 01:23:57 Discussion - 01:25:50 Hugues' Track: Halftime - Pat Riley Basketball - Genesis Music - 01:31:15 Discussion - 01:31:47   06) Hugues' 3rd composer: Toshio Murai   Hugues' Track: Office  Theme - Wall Street Kid - NES Music - 01:37:29 Discussion - 01:39:16 John's Track: Stage 6 - Cyber Core - PC Engine Music - 01:43:31 Discussion - 01:45:01   07) John's 4th composer: Joris de Man   John's Track: Eternal Conceit - Horizon Forbidden West - PS4 / PS5 Music - 01:48:22 Discussion - 01:53:09 Hugues' Track: Violet's Theme - Black Belt Challenge - GBA Music - 02:02:56 Discussion - 02:04:59   08) Hugues' 4th composer: Yoshihiko Miyazaki   Hugues' Track: Search Break - JB Harold Murder Club - PC88 Music - 02:10:56 Discussion - 02:12:43 John's Track: Dream of the Murder - Manhattan Requiem - LaserActive Music - 02:18:37 Discussion - 02:21:011   09) BONUS: “Unknown composers”!!!   John's Track: Login Screen - N/A (System Music) - PS5 Music - 02:24:25 Discussion - 02:27:28 End of show discussion - 02:31:12 Masters of VGM shout-out - 02:34:26 Closing track Discussion - 02:36:13 Sign-off - 02:39:39 Hugues' Track: Track 5 - Hyper Catalog - PC Engine Music - 02:39:48 Masters of VGM earcatcher (feat. [2025 Addendum….sorry for the ultra long-winded] Normally, we only share one rerun a month at Nerd Noise Radio. But due to the confluence of a) our having missed the May rerun completely, b) our not getting a June rerun out until the very end of the month, and c) a very important thematic connection to an event currently happening in the VGM podcast scene this month, I'm releasing…..not one……not two……not four…..but THREE reruns in July! From 2022 through 2024, the greater VGM podcast community participated in a glorious group experiment called “Masters of VGM” (or “MoVGM” for short - I think I might've even been the one to coin the shorthand…..maybe), where a master theme was decided upon by the community, and then every participating podcast would do an episode, or a handful of episodes in keeping with the crowdsourced theme. Nerd Noise Radio participated all three years - with a Channel 2 in 2022, a Channel 1 in 2024, and in 2023, with a whopping FOUR installments where we had a Channel 1, a Channel 2, and two Channel Fs. Channel F, for the new faces in the crowd is our mechanism for betas, and bonuses, and things which just don't fit the mold for a regular episode. Channel F is “format agnostic” and does not have any sort of regular release cadence whatsoever. So, “F-isodes” as I call them (and am probably WAY too proud of myself for that), can be just whatever, and come out just whenever. The people who devised and oversaw MoVGM have largely significantly reduced their presence in the podcast scene over the past couple years, and so had elected to not continue MoVGM into 2025. However, a handful of us, Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself have decided that, while not formally reviving MoVGM, we were going to do something of our own, in that same spirit. While the name hasn't been officially finalized as of this writing on July 2nd, and could still change, the “working title” (that will very likely become the final title), which was proposed by Professor Tom is “VGM Hall of Fame” I'll go ahead and dub it “HoF” for short. Naturally, we're trying to also inspire other podcasters to join us so that it is not just we three, but at the very, very least, there will be an HoF episode from all of us on the theme of “a soundtrack that belongs in a theoretical “VGM Hall of Fame” (hence the name). Nerd Noise Radio's contribution to this will be a Channel 1 featuring the Super Metroid soundtrack (C1E97). If I have the time, and the mental energy, I might also supplement this with an F-isode on a much more obscure soundtrack that begs to enjoy greater awareness and celebration (Lucid 9, if it ends up happening). One other major difference between HoF and MoVGM is that MoVGM occurred in June (2023 was so big that it extended into July) where HoF will occur in July. We all wanted to do this in June, but we were all too deep into production of our respective June content at the time that we all agreed to just push it back to July instead. Anyway, over the river and through the woods, to the point I *FINALLY* get: in a bid to not only help draw extra attention to HoF and hopefully drum up a little excitement for it, among both listeners as well as other podcasters, especially prospective participants, as well as to simply celebrate some of the glory that was this remarkable moment in time for a community, this month, I will rerun our 2022 MoVGM contribution, our 2023 Channel 2 contribution, which was a sort of “spiritual sequel” to our 2022 outing (with links to our other 2023 contributions in that rerun's show notes), and finally, to our 2024 offering. And naturally, we'll start with 2022. The theme of 2022 was “which composers would you put on your ‘VGM Mount Rushmore'”? So everyone was to pick four composers. Since Ch 2 was Hugues and I, rather than picking just two, we each picked four for a grand total, of course, of eight, and then did a thing where we each picked one track from each of the eight composers (one each for our own composers, as well as one each for the other guys' composers). With this being a 2022 production, all the usual caveats about production quality differences and deficiencies. Between a lesser mic and less fully developed production techniques, the sound quality will not be up to the standards of a 2025 episode (I also hadn't started editing out the “umms” yet….apologies for that!). But it's still pretty decent. Certainly decent enough that it doesn't really feel like a barrier to enjoyment like, say, a 2018, or especially 2017 episode would be. And so, without further ado: our first of three reruns this month, the first of three to celebrate the memory of MoVGM as well as hopefully whet people's appetites for HoF: C2E8: “Our Four Favorites” - originally released 06/30/2022.   Enjoy!   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's Broadcast is C2E8 for Theme Thursday, June 30th, 2022. We keep the Meet recording in case there is an emergency with the Audacity recording, but otherwise don't use it in the final episode, and I just align and combine our high quality Audacity recordings. On this episode, however, (a first for Ch 2) we lost a portion of Hugues' Audacity recording, so we did have to use our fallback a little bit. At the very bottom of the show notes, I'll include a LONG[ISH] VERSION which explains more. I did everything I could to minimize the impact of the Google Meet recording in the final episode. 2025 Show Notes Amendment: I love the setup we have here where on the first day of the month, we released our final ever TwoFer Tuesday, and now, here at the last day of the month, we re-release our first ever TwoFer Tuesday! It feels like a wonder twist on "bookends". As always when re-running early episodes, please excuse the atrocious production quality. One of my favorite things looking back on the early episodes of the show is how "different, yet the same" they are. From a sound quality perspective, the differences are night and day in every aspect. But in terms of show format and events, other than missing the now customary summary introduction, and the fact that they've gradually gotten longer over the years, it's the same darned show that it's always been. And what the early episodes lack in polish and finesse and technique and maturity, they somewhat make up for in youthful exuberance and wide-eyed optimism, and a simply innocent fun. You've heard the latest and greatest of TwoFer Tuesday this month, now hear the awkward first baby steps!....different....yet the same.... Lastly, I had toyed with the idea of doing three reruns this month - today's rerun, as well as the two highlighted April Fool's episodes: 2020's "Backtracks" (where all the tracks played in reverse), and 2024's "Parallels" (where all the tracks played over top of each other all at once). But I had procrastinated, and now it's the last day of the month, and it would simply obscene of me to upload three reruns in one day. So the compromise that I settled on was to include links to them here in the show notes, in case you wanted to revisit them (or perhaps experience them for the first time). So, here are the links, Backtracks first, then Parallels. In terms of production value, Backtracks is dramatically better than today's rerun, but also dramatically lesser than our current works, whereas Parallels is very close to our current level of production : https://nerdnoiseradio.podbean.com/e/noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-c1e52-backtracks/   https://nerdnoiseradio.podbean.com/e/ch-1-noise-from-the-hearts-of-nerds-c1e83-parallels/ And now, the [otherwise unmodified] original episode shownotes! Inspiration for the cold open obviously came from me watching Goodfellas for the 100th time. How freakin unbelievably good was Scorsese's mother in that. Possibly the best overall actor in a particular scene with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta, all in their primes, she steals the screen and has a top 10 all-time scene in any movie. Picking up a shovel at my mother's keeps getting better every time I see it. '98 Braves slowed reverb is really fantastic. I'm seriously considering blasting some chopped and screwed country tunes next week. How wicked hot is that. George Jones and Randy Travis chopped and screwed get outta town. In other seriously fantastic news.. I'm a single 32 year old man with no children so that affords me the luxury of spending money on vinyl records to blast for you people every week that would be good for you good for me thank you now. I did just yesterday find a rare Jai Paul Demo drop of Jasmine to match my Demo drop record of BTSTU. It is not the limited Jasmine record that smells like Jasmine, it is the older original 2012 Demo drop vinyl of Jasmine and I do believe it is sealed. A sealed copy should be at least $100-$120 but basically only nerd losers like me know this so I found the Orig 2012 Demo for $16 on eBay with no other comparable sold items in history meaning its pretty wicked rare. I only need 3 records to complete the entire library of possible Jai Paul vinyl. He/Do you love her now single numbered to 500 and signed, going anywhere from $300-$500 a pop.. The white vinyl Bait Ones drop which is cheap I'm just lazy and already have 4 copies of Bait Ones. And the limited smelling Jasmine record would be the only ones I'm needing and I'd imagine I will break down and have them all within the next year or so as I expand this ever-increasing collection. I do actually need another shelf I've run out of room. Who typed this novel in the description of my Witwicky Juan Don installment? I did try a new coffee today and I do believe it just made me black out for a second. Thank you, as always, for being here and enduring this ear beating. I hope an individual out there somewhere enjoyed it. Until next time, I remain your faithful disc jockey on the internet.Your Host with the Most,Witwicka Juan Don
