Women make up just 34% of the workforce in professional STEM fields. In college, too, women are underrepresented: about 21% of engineering majors are women and around 19% of computer and information science majors are women. So, the question is: Why does this happen? Are women just less interested in these fields? Jennifer Hoffman, Shannon Murphy and Robin Tinghitella, all faculty in the University of Denver's College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, answer that question with a resounding “NO.” Together at DU, Shannon, Jennifer and Robin co-host science summer camps for middle-school girls. And they are not only providing opportunities for girls to become acquainted with STEM fields, they're also studying the campers' relationships to science.   In a recently published paper, the trio, along with outside colleagues, examine the effects of these science summer camps on girls' relationship with science and their scientific self-efficacy by asking the girls a series of questions before and after their camp experiences. In this episode, Emma chats with the three female scientists about their experiences as women in STEM and why it's so important to get girls interested in the sciences early in life. Jennifer Hoffman is a professor of physics and astronomy in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Denver. She holds the Womble Chair of Astronomy and directs DU's historic Chamberlin Observatory. Her research interests focus on the late stages of massive stellar evolution, in particular on the role of binary stars in shaping supernova explosions. Hoffman uses a combination of observational spectropolarimetry and 3-D computational modeling to explore these research questions. She sees her roles as an educator and mentor as a vital part of her scholarship. In all these arenas, Hoffman works to expand opportunities and remove barriers to participation in physics and astronomy for people from historically underrepresented groups. Robin Tinghitella is an associate professor of biological sciences in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Denver. As a behavioral ecologist, she works to understand how rapidly changing environments alter animal communication, particularly interactions between males and females. Researchers in her animal behavior lab use both insect and fish model systems and are supported by the National Science Foundation, the Morris Animal Foundation, the Society for the Study of Evolution, and the Animal Behavior Society (amongst others).  Shannon Murphy is a professor of biological sciences in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Denver. She studies the ecology and evolution of interactions between plants and insects. Murphy works side by side with students to investigate how these plant-insect interactions are affected by global change. She works closely with undergraduate and graduate students to both teach them about and study the ecology and evolution of interactions between plants and insects, and together they investigate how these interactions are affected by global change. More Information: “STEM Summer Camp for Girls Positively Affects Self-Efficacy" by E. When Elaine Ostrander decided to focus her genetics work on dogs, some of her colleagues thought she'd lost her way. But she's proven, over and over, that comparing dog genes to human genes unlocks many secrets and leads to solid therapies. “The days of doing a siloed approach to science are long gone,” Dr. Ostrander declares. And she has every right to. We join guest host James Jacobson for a mind-expanding conversation with Dr. Ostrander of the National Institute of Health. We learn so much about how genes shape dogs (literally) and how the shapes they take help us understand our own human DNA. They discuss the role of genes in behavior in dogs, and how new research points toward the possibility that neurodivergent people with things like ADHD and autism might have similar genetic profiles to certain dogs. Join us for a powerful conversation with a woman who helps scientists understand their field, creates tools for everyone to use, and is a super dog lover … even bringing her not-super-smart Border Collie, Tess, to work so she could “work” with the families of her cancer patients and lab partners. There are very few signs that directly indicate your dog has cancer. Even a lump could be an infection or a benign growth. Many common early signs, such as lethargy, weight loss, vomiting, or increased drinking, can be caused by a variety of health problems. Veterinary oncologist David Vail recommends keeping up with regular veterinary exams and going in whenever your dog doesn't seem right. Your vet can do testing to narrow down the possible issues that could be causing your dog's symptoms, and track the size of any lumps so that you will both know if a lump starts to grow at an increased rate. Listen in for more signs that can indicate early cancer, as well as tips on how to decide if a test is worth running. One of the givens in this world is that things never stay the same, we are always learning and we are always improving. This is as true for the veterinary profession as it is anywhere else. The information changes are based on must come from somewhere though. Many of us will be aware of the change in recommendations as to the timing of desexing dogs. When I trained it was almost written in stone that it was by 6 months. It would now appear that the timing isn't quite that simple. Early spey and neutering has been associated with an increase in non-traumatic orthopaedic injuries. Where did this information from? One of the major studies the updated recommendations are based on is The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study run by The Morris Animal Foundation (https://www.morrisanimalfoundation.org/) The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is one of the largest, most comprehensive prospective canine health studies in the United States. The Study's purpose is to identify the nutritional, environmental, lifestyle and genetic risk factors for cancer and other diseases in dogs. Each year, with the help of veterinarians and dog owners, the Foundation collects health, environmental and behavioural data on 3,000+ enrolled golden retrievers and has just celebrated its 10th anniversary.Today we have a chat to Dr Kelly Diehl, Senior Director of Science and Communication for The Morris Animal Foundation about:·         An overview of The Morris Animal Foundation·         What is The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study·         Why Golden Retrievers?·         Some of the results to date·         The relevance to other breeds of dogs, species (even humans)·         Future areas of interest

EOAD Gene Identified in Rhodesian Ridgebacks Adam Boyko, co-founder of Embark, and Rhodesian Ridgeback breeder Denise Flaim join host Laura Reeves to discuss EOAD (Early Onset Adult Deafness) in Ridgebacks and Embark's discovery of the genetic cause that can identify affected and carrier dogs before the condition develops. “EOAD is early onset adult deafness,” Flaim said. “It's a form of deafness that's not related to color. Many breeds, like dalmatians, the way the white overlays the cochlea impacts deafness. This is just a simple autosomal recessive, inherited the same way brown nose color is. If you have two copies of this recessive gene, if you are a Ridgeback, you become deaf. “The interesting thing in Ridgebacks is these puppies are born hearing. So if you are a breeder who wants to do your due diligence and BAER test your puppies at 8 weeks, they'll all hear. What then begins to happen is they start to go progressively deaf. The males quickly, usually by six months are completely deaf and the bitches can take from 12 to 18 plus months. “(This test) identifies if your dog is a carrier or not. If your dog is a carrier, you simply don't breed it to another carrier and you're free and clear. This is a really important point because the tendency among dog breeders, especially those who want to be really, really virtuous and really, really ethical, is to say, ‘oh, I'm going to identify all these carriers and get them out of my breeding program.' Which is, of course, what you don't wanna do. “You certainly don't want to increase the frequency of this gene in the population, but what you want to do is manage it. The thing is it's never what you know, it's always what you don't know. It's never what you worry about, it's always what you don't worry about. So yes, we've got this marker for deafness, but that deafness carrier you're throwing out of your breeding program may not carry for a really devastating disease for which we don't have a test. So, like anything, moderation and taking the bigger view is really important.” Teamwork for the win… “Project Dog started working with breeders like Denise,” Boyko said, “and recruited a whole bunch of samples and was able to find an associated region. But sequencing of a deaf dog didn't yield any candidate variants that were causing the mutation. So, you're sort of stuck in this world, do we want to offer a linkage-based test, which we know probably isn't going to be 100% accurate, or do we wait until we can find a mutation test. For a while, there was just a linkage test was all that could be offered. “So, Embark came onto the scene. We, of course, have a large database of dogs, of Ridgebacks and others, and so we were able to recruit more cases, more controls. We were able to verify the association Project Dog found. It's like ‘yeah, this is definitely on chromosome 18, right here. There had been advances in the genomics. We put some scientists on it …. and sure enough a mutation did find itself. It was in gene EPS 8L2, which was a fantastic gene because it's also associated with early onset deafness in humans, in recessive forms.” Hear the REST of the story on today's episode. Blunt Dissection: The best minds in veterinary medicine, academia & business profiled so you can learn from their experience.

On today's show I'm joined by the woman with potentially the new Blunt Dissection record (Sorry Sheilah) for the number of letters after a name, Dr. Robin Downing, DVM, DAAPM, DACVSMR, CVPP, CCRP, CVA, MS in Clinical Bioethics. Robin, who will be familiar to many of you, graduated from Loyola University of Chicago, (where she obtained a degree in English) in 1981 and later from the University of Illinois: College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. Growing up, Dr. Robin had a natural rapport with animals, thanks to her Grandad; and was later pushed towards pursuing her career in veterinary medicine by her partner and now wife. Utilising her degree in English, Robin wrote a weekly column in The Denver Post, as well as multiple magazine articles, short stories, and two books. Meanwhile, using her veterinary degree to transform Windsor Veterinary Clinic into a Practice of Excellence and create The Downing Center for Animal Pain Management. Alongside, this Robin serves as a Trustee for the Morris Animal Foundation and is an affiliate faculty member at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine. It is no wonder that in 2001, she was presented the prestigious Excellence in Veterinary Healthcare Award by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association in Vancouver, and the winner of the 2020 Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award. Now, just before we jump into the episode, a quick word from today's show sponsor which today is the Thrive community. If you are struggling with managing time, feeling like an imposter or burnout then you need to make a change. The good news is that you are not broken or a bad fit for the profession, you are simply missing some super-important skills no-one teaches at university. Skills you will learn as part of the VetX community. Thrive is a RACE accredited professional skills course where members receive training, toolkits and one-to-one coaching to develop these skills. Join hundreds of other vets who have changed their careers for the better as a Thrive member. To learn more and find out if the class is a good fit for you visit www.vetxinternational.com today. Now back to the show... This episode is both a heartwarming and heart-wrenching story of Robin's life, (she now holds a second record for the first guest to make me cry) as she recalls her struggles of being both gay and a woman in the 1980s veterinary industry, how her dog stopped her from taking her own life, discusses how every vet should use a bioethical framework, and outlines her hopes to influence human medicine. Expect to laugh, cry, and be truly amazed by the remarkable Dr. Robin Downing.

This week on the Good Dog Pod, Laura announces that April is officially Healthy Puppy Month! Good Dog has partnered with Revival Animal Health to support the Morris Animal Foundation with their Parvovirus Research Efforts. Starting April 1st, 2021 you can visit https://www.healthypuppymonth.com/ (HealthyPuppyMonth.com) to learn more about Parvovirus, hear stories about Parvo survivors and join us in our mission to promote puppy health by signing the Healthy Puppy Pledge. For every signature, Good Dog and Revival will each donate $1 to the Morris Animal Foundation.  Laura introduces us to our two guests, Dr. Kelly Diehl, the Senior Director of Science and Communications at the Morris Animal Foundation and Dr. Judi Stella, the Head of Health, Standards and Research at Good Dog. The Morris Animal Foundation has been around since 1948 when it was founded by Dr. Morris. Kelly introduces us to some of the unique research the Foundation is currently pursuing, including a project on horse behavior as well as donkey pain. Additionally, Kelly discusses the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, which was conceived of as a cancer risk study. 3,044 Golden Retrievers were enrolled between the age of 2-6 years old. Every year, the veterinarian and owner of the enrolled dog's fill out a questionnaire (which is over 100 pages!), as well as creating a hair, blood, feces, nails and urine bank every year. The cost of the study, you may ask? $32 million. Shifting gears to Parvovirus. Parvovirus is a horrible disease, which grows in rapidly dividing cells. The disease affects the GI tract, as well as bone marrow. Common symptoms include smelly, bloody diarrhea (Laura emphasized just how smelly it is) and a low white cell count, which is usually used as a diagnosis. Additional tests are then used to confirm. Luckily, vaccines were developed to tackle Parvo, but it has not been entirely eliminated.  This virus has mutated over time, which led to further research on Parvo. The Baker Institute at Cornell is looking deeper into the Parvo mutation, and whether the current vaccines can protect dogs against these new variants. At a higher level, this research will also help us understand more about canine immunity. And lastly, they are looking at what configuration of antibodies is the best to ultimately be a treatment, and whether these antibodies could be made in the lab. We encourage you to join our efforts to tackle the Parvovirus by signing our Healthy Puppy Pledge at https://www.healthypuppymonth.com/ (www.healthypuppymonth.com) !

About This Episode: Jonathan Goldsmith is an actor who began his career on the New York stage, then started a career in film and television. He appeared in several TV shows from the 1960s to the 1990s. Before becoming the Most Interesting Man in the World, Jonathan worked as a garbage collector, crashed in bug-infested apartments, and snuck into strangers' bar mitzvahs for free food. He appeared in hundreds of plays, movies, and TV shows, including Dallas, Gunsmoke, and the Clint Eastwood film Hang 'Em High (1968). After he retired from his showbiz career, he found success in a network marketing company for waterless car-wash products – but after his business partnership went bad, he lost it all. It was that loss that pushed him back to Hollywood and helped him to find his defining role as “The Most Interesting Man in the World.” Jonathan has been an advocate for landmine victim support and has assisted the Morris Animal Foundation in their efforts to prevent and cure cancer in dogs. He also supported the S.A.B.R.E Foundation, Free Arts for Abused Children, which pairs artists with children in protective custody, and the Stella Link Foundation, a group calling attention to child sex trafficking in Cambodia. One of the breeds at highest risk for developing cancer is the hugely popular Golden Retriever. About 60 percent of all Golden Retrievers will die from cancer – 57 percent of females and 66 percent of males. The two most common types of cancer in this breed are hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma. Why is this relevant to doodle owners? Whatever is common in a golden retriever can be an issue for a goldendoodle. Sadly, a number of our Doodle Kisses members have lost goldendoodles to cancer. Our guest is Dr Kelly Diehl, senior director of science & communication for the Morris Animal Foundation, which is the organization currently conducting The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is a $32 Million study, an amazing comprehensive study of GR's through their lifetime. This study is collecting a huge amount of data on GRs: spay/neuter ages, swimming and water temp, how dog was obtained, health conditions, pedigree, exposure to certain environments/chemicals and more! The information collected will hopefully provide a ton of clues into cancer and other health issues that are common to Golden retrievers. Special Guest: Kelly Diehl, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM.
