A Great Way to Manage Interruptions

People With Purpose

In this powerful Tiny Noticeable Things episode, David shares a highly effective way to manage interruptions. He provides you with 3 key questions to ask yourself to work out if you should be stopping what you are doing to help someone else. Then, explain how to make sure you are still available to help others, but in a way that keeps you productive too. KEY TAKEAWAYS Even a simple interruption like someone asking you a question usually takes up a lot of time. Interruptions tend to interrupt your flow, making it extremely difficult to work efficiently. Asking yourself the 3 simple questions David shares enables you to assess whether you should stop and help. Set time aside when you can't be interrupted except in an emergency and let others know. When you have to say no, do it kindly. BEST MOMENTS‘You want to be helpful. But it can be a bit of a curse. Especially if you don't like saying no,'‘Helping people to answer their own questions is a good skill to have.'‘Because you're a decent person, you're going to want to help them. That doesn't mean that you have to do it on their terms.' ABOUT THE SHOWPeople with purpose make a difference. Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far, we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life. ABOUT THE HOSTDavid Roberts is a highly regarded CEO, mentor, and investor with 30 years of experience across multiple sectors. As an intrapreneur and entrepreneur David has bought, grown, started and sold several businesses, working with values-driven start-ups, award-winning SMEs, and multinational corporations on strategies for service excellence, leadership, and profitable growth. David's passion is for purpose and creating an environment where everyone can succeed, through building teams that get things done, execute on their mission with passion, deliver exceptional service and really make a difference. In today's episode, we're going to be discussing procrastination. If there's one thing I deal with daily, almost on an hourly basis, and that's procrastination. I go to bed knowing what I want to accomplish the next day, with 100% certainty that I'll have no problem knocking each item off the list one by one with ease, but for years and years, I could never get all the things I thought I could get done from the planning session the night before. Has this ever happened to you? When I finally had enough and wanted to know why my productivity was slower than others, so I started to track where my 24 hours each day were going. After a few days of close analysis, all the signs pointed to one single affliction, I'm a procrastinator! But with that being said, I'm a much-improved procrastinator 30 years later, meaning procrastination doesn't get as many minutes or hours a day from me as it once did. I'd like to share some quotes from books that have helped me beat procrastination most days. If you find one of the titles resonating with you by the end of the episode, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of your own and read it in its entirety. I'll put the links below. One thing that's been proven time and time again is that getting referrals comes when you believe in what you're selling. But it doesn't work so well if you just believe in it because of the paycheck. If you really believe in what you're doing, and you're working for a company that you know can really serve the people that they work for, referrals flow so much easier. In today's episode of The Referral Bench Podcast, Phil and Ian talk about some of the issues with working with a company that you don't believe in, or doesn't have a reputation equal to yours, and how much easier it is to get referrals when you're doing something that you really believe in. “If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.” That's a gem I found in MBS's book, How to Begin, from Body Shop founder Anita Roddick. It came to mind last night while I was being plagued by a particularly elusive mosquito my husband dubbed “Maverick.” (Yes, after the Tom Cruise movie.) In my sleep-deprived state I searched for the meaning—and the business metaphor—behind this pesky, pernicious little beast. Thus, after a midnight brainstorm, I bring you this solo episode on finding (and eradicating!) the mosquitoes* in your business.  *Don't get them confused with the Butterfly Effect—tiny moments (supposedly) sparking massive change, or Splatology—low-stakes time clutter accumulating until you can't see through the windshield any longer.

Creativity and joy are closely related. If you're feeling stuck, and need some inspiration on how to tap into creativity - Marion Abrams of Grounded Content and I have 8 ideas for you to jumpstart your creativity and joy. Here they are: 1. Just do the thing. Starting is the hardest part. 2. Double down on what you've been doing. Recommit to it.  3. Take yourself on an "artist's date. " (as inspired by Julia Cameron's book, The Artist's Way) 4. Revisit the source of your inspiration. What started you on your creative journey? Spend time with that, and DO some of it.  5. If you're creating something and have data that can inform you as to what has done the best (on your blog, podcast, social media), spend some time looking at what past episodes or posts have done the best. Go back and look at what some of your favorite past work has been, and take inspiration from that. 6. Take a break or a breather. 7. What has been the favorite thing you've created for your show / blog / art? What did you love about it, or love about creating it? Use your past favorite work as inspiration for what comes next. 8. Go pro, as inspired by Steven Pressfield's "War of Art." Sometimes, you are not going to love your art or the thing you create. And, that's when you need to go back to it and do the work. Struggling with your confidence? You're not alone. We all striveto have more self-confidence. However, it can be difficult to come by at times. We often hold ourselves to unreasonably high standards, and this can have a negative impact on our self-esteem. However, if you can learn how to leverage and strengthen your self-confidence, you can generate some excellent outcomes. For instance, self-confidence leads to: Healthier relationships. Confidence doesn't just influence how you feel about yourself, but it also helps you to understand and appreciate others better too. Better performance. Rather than constantly worrying you're not good enough, you can devote your energy to reaching your goals. Resilience. When you're confident, you're more likely to open yourself up to new opportunities. At the same time, you're also less likely to take a massive hit if something doesn't go according to plan. Here are some quick ways to improve your self-confidence. Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others The most important thing you can do to strengthen your self-confidence is to avoid comparing yourself to other people. When you're constantly comparing how you look, your job, your home, and other aspects of your life to what other people have, it's much harder to be confident in yourself. Researchers have discovered that people who compare themselves to others are more likely to feel envy, and envy impacts how these people feel about themselves. If you're feeling envious of someone else's life, remember that the image you see of that person might not be as real as it seems. Look After Your Physical Health It's difficult to feel good about yourself when you don't feel good.Practicing good self-care and looking after your body means that you'll be in a healthier position to look after yourself – mind, body, and spirit. Start by looking at your current self-care routine. Where does it most need improvement? For instance, if you're currently eating a lot of fast food to deal with long hours at work, now might be the time to start thinking about how you can add more fruits and vegetables into your routine. If you spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer at work, then you're going to need to start getting some exercise into your routine, so you can feel your best. It's not just diet and exercise that makes a difference either. Think about how well you sleep. If you're not getting the right amount of sleep, you'll struggle to feel strong enough to handle the everyday challenges you have to face. Be Kinder to Yourself We could all do with a little more self-compassion these days. #Tiger Woods #Motivation #Self-confidence #mindset #inner-Critic #adhd #NBA --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wayne-weathersby/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wayne-weathersby/support
