"Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl's Courage Changed Music" (Margarita Engle, 2015) captures the true story of a Cuban girl who became a world-class drummer with poetic writing and beautiful illustrations. In "Maya and the Beast" (2022) Maya Gabeira tells her own story of becoming a world-class surfer in Brazil. "Abuelita and I Make Flan" (Adriana Hernandez, 2022) is a picture book for younger readers about a girl and her grandmother cooking together. The Library sponsors family games nights every Monday evening, and will be hosting a balloon "twisting" workshop on 10/10 open to ages 7-17. For details, visit thetroyllibrary.org. Or, if you're in a rush, click here to download the transcript! Debbi: [00:00:10] This is the Crime Cafe, your podcasting source of great crime, suspense, and thriller writing. I'm your host, Debbi Mack. Before I bring on my guest. I'll just remind you that the Crime Cafe has two ebooks for sale: the nine-book boxed set and the short story anthology. You can find the buy links for both on my website, DebbiMack.com, under the "Crime Cafe" link. You can also get a free copy of either book if you become a Patreon supporter. You'll get that and much more if you support the podcast on Patreon, along with our eternal gratitude for doing so. Debbi: [00:01:03] Hi, everyone. I'm pleased to have as my guest today the author of the Dexter Vega Mysteries, as well as highly-regarded novels such as PLAYING FOR THE DEVIL'S FIRE, a young adult novel that has received a couple of honors in terms of Best Fiction and Best Young Adult Fiction. Again, it's a pleasure to introduce Phillippe Diederich [aka Danny Lopez] Glad you could be here today. Danny: [00:01:30] Hi. Thanks for having me, Debbi. Debbi: [00:01:32] Well, I'm just glad you can be here. And before we talk about your mysteries, let's talk about the novels that came before that. What was your first novel about? Danny: [00:01:44] My first published novel is SOFRITO. And it's a novel about a Cuban-American who was born in the United States, has a Cuban restaurant in New York, and he travels to Havana for the first time in order to steal the recipe that had once belonged to his uncle. And in the process falls in love, discovers his late father's past, and mainly it deals a lot with the different shades of ideas on why people leave Cuba. You know, not necessarily political. So it's a double love story. It's a return to your own roots. It's a foodie book. It talks a lot about food and the restaurants. And it's a bit of a tour of Havana. I've met some people who have read it and say, "Oh, we went to Cuba because we read your book." Debbi: [00:02:45] That's really cool. How would you describe it in terms of genre? Danny: [00:02:53] Just straight up fiction. I got into writing because I like stories. So I try to create a story for all of my books. There has to be something beyond just characters or pretty writing. One of the things that happened with SOFRITO is that I had spent a lot of time in the 90s in Cuba, in Havana in particular, as a photojournalist. So it was still a forbidden place for Americans to go to. So I thought it would be interesting to write a book based on this place. I was so close and yet so far. And I also wanted to write about the different opinions that Cubans and Cuban-Americans had about Cuba and the Castro regime, etc. It took me so long to write and revise and get it published that by the time it got published, Obama had lifted some of the traveling sanctions that he had on. So it worked out quite well, I think, in the end that it got delayed in publication. Yeah. I'm just after a story. So I would say general fiction, you know. I'm really rooted in the classics of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. And they all have stories, great writing, great stories. And that's what I try to do. "One of the things that happened with SOFRITO is that I had spent a lot of time in the 90s in Cuba, in Havana in particular, as a photojournalist. So it was still a forbidden place for Americans to go to. So I thought it would be interesting to write a book based on this place." Debbi: [00:04:17] That's excellent. And that's really the whole point to write good stories. Now, your mysteries are written under a pseudonym, Danny Lopez. What made you choose to take on a pseudonym and why Danny Lopez? Danny: [00:04:37] So what happened is I publish SOFRITO, which is a general fiction book, I suppose.

Maturepreneurial Podcast: Interviews with Older Entrepreneurs | Online Business Tips | Learn From Those Who Have Succeeded

Lorraine C. Ladish is a 21st century communicator and age disruptor who empowers women to achieve their dreams. She is the founder and CEO of Viva Fifty!, a bilingual community that celebrates being 50 and above. Lorraine is also a woman, mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend, writer, entrepreneur, and yogini. Lorraine was born in Spain to a family of writers. Her grandfather owned a printing press and on the weekends and after school, Lorraine and her sister would help him collate books. She can still remember the smell of the ink, the glue, the paper … Lorraine's father made a huge effort to ensure that all of his children could express themselves fluently in two languages. He wanted Lorraine to be a marine biologist, but because she grew up watching him write books, she chose to be a writer. Or maybe writing chose her. Lorraine wrote and published her first book - about an eating disorder she battled for years - before she turned 30. Her world was never the same after that. Today, she is the author of 18 books. Lorraine has worked as an editor and social media coordinator for a number of online publications. She is a content creator and regular contributor to NBCNews, Huffpost, AARP, Babycenter and Mom.me. She has contributed to People en Español, La Palma of The Palm Beach Post,  Purple Clover, Latina magazine and Redbook. Lorraine is active in two languages on social media platforms Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, where she has over 16,000 followers. She posts regularly and passionately about everything from family, to fashion, to current events, and more. Lorraine's next book - on embracing age - will be published by HarperCollins in 2017. Lorraine is very creative. She loves to draw. She has spent most of her life dancing (modern, jazz and Latin). She used to be a runner but then she rediscovered yoga. Now she spends a part of every day finding grace on and off the mat. Lorraine married in her mid-thirties. She had her first child at 37 and her second at 40. Being raised by her abuelita affected how she has mothered her own children: giving it her all, striving to be the best mother she can. She loves her daughters with all her heart. In 2004, Lorraine moved to Florida; incidentally, one day before a hurricane hit the Sunshine State. Four years later, during the Great Recession, Lorraine's world crumbled. She lost her marriage, her savings and her source of income. She found herself absolutely broke—emotionally and financially. But with two little girls to take care of, and with the help and inspiration from many friends along the way, Lorraine managed to reinvent her writing career by taking it online. A year later, Lorraine met the love of her life, who is also a writer. And guess what else? He’s multicultural, bilingual, and a parent: the father of a young boy, of similar age to her daughters. What more could she have wished for? Now Lorraine and her husband, Phillippe Diederich, live together as a blended family with their three children and the dog they rescued. Their children are teens and tweens, who get along just like real siblings. Together, they navigate the same challenges facing other multicultural families in the United States. Lorraine's dream is to one day live in a house by the beach. But she's not complaining. She can hop in the car and be soaking her toes in the ocean in less than ten minutes. All this while she pursues her love of inspiring women to live a full life and to chase their dreams!

My guest today, Phillippe Diederich is an award-winning novelist, and the author of three books, Sofrito, Playing with the Devil’s Fire, and his forthcoming mystery, The Last Girl (written under the pseudonym, Danny Lopez). Before he became a novelist, much of his photojournalism work centered around the Latin American culture, mainly in Cuba and Mexico. Phillippe was a nomad who enjoyed the early days of his career when he could walk the streets getting a pulse of the people. Phillippe is a devoted husband and father who believes our time here is short. He has an abundance of personal cultural influences from which to draw to build his stories. He is a man of the world, who allows us into his, with every book he writes. During this episode, Phillippe shares the inspiration behind his stories, how the book industry made him a young adult author and where he took some of his favorite photos. If you are considering a life or job transition but are having a hard time getting started I invite you to check out my Discover What’s Next coaching program. [14:24] Much of Phillippe’s fiction work centers around Cuba, and his first piece was the leader of a Harley Davidson club there. [27:29] Playing for the Devil's Fire addresses the changing landscape of a small town in Mexico from a young boy’s point of view. [35:58] Danny Lopez is a pseudonym Phillippe uses to separate his adult work from his young adult stories.
