Absolute pioneers in new technology, influencer marketing and making a name for oneself as a woman on the internet. Plus she's Sister Brené's pal and podcast producer.
Episode 441 - Jennifer Lang - Places We Left Behind, commitment and compromise, faith and familyAn American-French-Israeli hybrid, I write about identity, language, home. While raising kids in the San Francisco Bay Area at the dawning of the internet, I worked as copy editor/editor/content writer for BabyCenter, PlanetRx, and many other now obsolete .coms. But I dreamed of seeing my name on paper, in print, eventually writing for Parenting, Parents, Natural Solutions, Scholastic, Woman's Day, Real Simple. Then, in the early 2000s, something else caught my eye: the back-page essays. Who were these first-person voices and how did they tell such moving stories? Curious and on the opposite coast, I enrolled in a creative nonfiction class: one, which led to another, and then another, finally culminating in my MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Thank you so much to each of my mentors for teaching me something different and dear, for bolstering me to walk this path as writer. When American-born Jennifer falls in love with French-born Philippe during the First Intifada in Israel, she understands their relationship isn't perfect. Both 23, both Jewish, they lead very different lives: she's a secular tourist, he's an observant immigrant. Despite their opposing outlooks on two fundamental issues—country and religion—they are determined to make it work. For the next 20 years, they root and uproot their growing family, each longing for a singular place to call home. In Places We Left Behind, Jennifer puts her marriage under a microscope, examining commitment and compromise, faith and family while moving between prose and poetry, playing with language and form, daring the reader to read between the lines.Distributed through Ingram, the book is available on Vine Leaves Press store, Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, and more.In a book club? You might make a self-deprecating joke about riding the hot mess express, or saving for your kids' future therapy, but the truth is? Behind the closed doors of the therapy room, so many women share that they fear they are a "bad mom," and there's nothing funny about it. Listen as we get honest about : the fact that nearly every mom sometimes feels like a "bad mom" and fears that she is failing at motherhood. how apps like BabyCenter, and internet mom groups, created a generation of "responsibilized" moms how parenting information has separated moms from their intuition the unrealistic, unconscious expectations that many of us have for ourselves or our children how early motherhood experiences, including postpartum depression and anxiety, can contribute to the feeling of being a "bad mom" Winnicott's "Good Enough Mother" (aka the one time psychology DIDN'T blame moms for absolutely everything) why it is important to challenge the idea of being a bad mom and practice self-compassion. This is SO MUCH EASIER to do in community, so we'll be continuing the conversation in the facebook group, and we'd love you to meet us there! Plus, Andrea sings the praises of a beloved pre-k teacher; Jessica reacts - strongly - to the idea of the "good enough" mother; and Andrea and Jessica discover that they were both bloggers in the early internet days (who knew?). As we head towards Mother's Day, we want YOU, our beloved listener who is also a mother, to know this: You are exactly the mom that your children need. So make all of the "bad mom" jokes that you want, but remember - you are more than good enough, just the way you are. Happy Mother's Day! Like this episode? Check these out: 44. Today Dr. Dan interviews Babycenter's Robin Hilmantel about Babycenter's recent research around "No mom left behind: Addressing postpartum maternity care gaps” and related maternal health support (US). Dr. Dan and Robin discuss several BabyCenter survey findings including: *Moms are facing a support crisis in the months immediately following birth, according to the BabyCenter survey. At home, moms are too often left to piece together their own postpartum care while balancing that with the health and well-being of their newborn. *As a result of a baby-focused approach to postnatal care, more moms feel prepared to care for their newborn (65%) than they do to care for themselves (47%). *First-time moms struggle with postpartum self-care: Only 38% feel properly prepared to take care of their own physical and emotional needs after giving birth. BabyCenter is the world's number one digital parenting resource reaching millions of new and expectant parents each month. The BabyCenter team conducts original research with a vision to create a world of healthy pregnancies, thriving children, and confident parents. Robin Hilmantel is the senior director of editorial strategy and growth at BabyCenter. Before joining the BabyCenter team, Hilmantel was the digital director at Women's Health. The difference in anxiety levels mothers experience depending on their maternity or parental leave from their jobs. How the United States differs from other countries in terms of maternity leave and parental leave. What to look and ask for when it comes to employment and maternity leave and how to advocate for yourself and your rights. We don't have to go the route of calling her a "single mom" or compare to any other life for that matter. Military life as a spouse and mom is HARD in many ways where comparison only takes us further from the support these mothers need. Let's just honor what they're individually going through and help them in any way we can! The first step is learning about their lives and the challenges they face. Along with the triumphs! And this is where my special guest comes in... Today, Ashley Falkos helps us understand her life as a military spouse and mother. To debunk the stereotypes. Explain shat her life was versus now that her husband is recently retired. We talk about the realities she faced but also the wins that she discovered that worked for her & her family. Her communication lessons, avoiding resentment, involvement of her husband, creating community, fulfilling both roles at times, misunderstandings about military life, and her recommendations on how to help your marriage survive through it all. It's Monday, December 26th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) 11,000 children in Yemen killed in last 8 years Yemen is an unstable country. International Christian Concern reports that it is torn between “Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who overthrew the Yemeni government in 2014, [which] are pitted against a multinational coalition led by Saudi Arabia.” The conflict over the past seven years has left the civilians in ruin. Tragically, 11,000 children have been killed during the conflict, equaling roughly four children a day according to the United Nations Children's Fund. This number only includes the verified cases; the actual numbers are believed to be much higher. At least 74 children were among the 164 people killed or injured by landmines between July and August alone. Plus, the Yemeni kids suffer from malnourishment, lack of effective medical care, preventable diseases, and little access to clean water and hygiene services. The small population of Christians, who converted from Islam, keep their faith hidden for their protection. According to Open Doors, Yemen is the fifth worst country in the world for the persecution of Christians. Coldest Christmas as storm causes flight cancellations & travel chaos Areas in the Midwest and the Plains experienced one of the "coldest Christmas" in 40 years, reports the U.S. Sun. Roughly a third of the country experienced a winter weather warning. The National Weather Service reported that wind chills from the blizzard conditions were "life-threatening" in the Midwest. Around 100 million Americans in 37 states were placed under winter alerts and wind chill alerts, and at least 18 people have died due to the severe weather. On Christmas Eve, 5,711 flights were cancelled, reports FlightAware. Arizona judge declares Democrat Katie Hobbs governor On Saturday, an Arizona judge ruled against Republican Kari Lake's election challenge, effectively confirming Democrat Secretary of State Katie Hobbs as the state's next governor, reports Fox 10 Phoenix. Lake's team had called Richard Baris, the director of the Big Data Poll, to the witness stand, who claimed between 25,000 and 40,000 voters were disenfranchised on Election Day because of issues at polling locations. But, in the decision on Saturday, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson, who was appointed by then-Republican Governor Jan Brewer, found that the court did not find clear and convincing evidence of the widespread misconduct that Lake had alleged had affected the result of the 2022 general election. Lake has until 5 p.m. today to respond. Hobbs takes office as governor on January 2. Missouri mayor bars kids from drag queen show A town in Missouri has kept minors from attending a holiday drag queen show officially promoted as “family friendly,” due to a trend of similar events proving to be anything but family friendly. The New York Post reports that the Chesterfield concert venue, The Factory, which hosted “A Drag Queen Christmas” Wednesday, announced hours before the show that ticket holders younger than 18 would be turned away. Chesterfield, Missouri Mayor Bob Nation addressed local ordinances which prohibit exposing minors to certain kinds of sexually-charged entertainment. Mayor Nation said, “In no way is this meant to disrespect or put down the LGBTQ+ community, or in no way is this meant to restrict drag shows. Those are legal entities. It's just the content that we were told might occur. We thought we should suggest limiting the age limit.” The Washington Times adds that doubts about how “family friendly” these shows really are were vindicated by reporting from journalist Tayler Hansen, who recorded another show of the tour in the same series in Austin, Texas. It “feature[d] nude prosthetic body parts and simulated sex acts.” Ephesians 5:11 says, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Top baby names of 2022 A popular parenting resource has identified top baby names and shifting trends after consulting hundreds of thousands of parents who named an infant in 2022, reports Fox News. BabyCenter, an online media company, released a baby name report based on responses it received from parents who welcomed "about 416,000 babies" this year from January 1 through November 1. The top 10 names for girls are Olivia, Emma, Amelia, Ava, Sophia, Isabella, Luna, Mia, Charlotte and Evelyn. And the top 10 names for boys are Liam, Noah, Oliver, Elijah, Mateo, Lucas, Levi, Asher, James and Leo. Plus, nature-themed names, which have become trendy, include Violet, Willow, Iris, Meadow, Juniper, Ivy, Nova, and Aurora. 43 state capitols feature Nativity scenes in 2022 And finally, a campaign that is working to have a Christian message present in all 50 state capitols during the Christmas season has confirmed that it is at 43 for this Christmas in 2022, reports WorldNetDaily.com. Officials with the Thomas More Society say there are Nativity displays scheduled in all but a handful of capitols this season. The Thomas More Society and the American Nativity Scene are helping a growing number of private citizen groups across the nation to display biblical manger scenes on government property this Christmas. State Capitols in Alaska, New York, Utah, and Virginia are scheduled to feature the traditional display of Mary and Joseph with Baby Jesus in the manger for the first time this year. Ed O'Malley, president of the American Nativity Scene, said the 2022 total is more capitols than ever have participated in the past. And Thomas Olp, of the Thomas More Society, explained that many people "erroneously assume that government entities are prohibited from allowing a religious display." He said, "The law is clear. Government entities may erect and maintain celebrations of the Christmas holiday – or allow citizens to do so on government property, including nativity scenes, as long as a crèche's sole purpose is not to promote its religious content, and it is placed in context with other symbols of the season as part of an effort to celebrate the public Christmas holiday through traditional symbols. We pray that the nativity scenes of the Christmas season will help to foster a sense of unity and peace on earth." Luke 2:4-11 says, “Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem, the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. "And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today, in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Monday, December 26th in the year of our Lord 2022. She launched her own YouTube-based media company in 2015. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for the last day of 2021, Friday, December 31. Friday will hover above freezing for part of the day, and with that will come a chance for a variety of annoying road conditions. According to the National Weather Service the high for the Cedar Rapids area will be 36 degrees. Friday morning could have some dense fog on your commute. After this, there is a slight chance listed for light snow in the early afternoon, a slight chance for snow and rain after that, and a slight chance for freezing rain after that. The low will settle in at around 8 degrees Friday night, and this will be followed by potentially heavy snow on Saturday. The students at Prairie Crest Elementary will get one extra day of winter break while workers rid the College Community school of “any remaining asbestos exposed during construction.” A letter the district sent Wednesday to Prairie Crest families said the district learned last week about the asbestos release that dated back to construction work in the building in June. The letter stated a contractor removing the carpet did not abate asbestos within the carpet glue before removing it. It was discovered by an asbestos consultant who was doing an annual asbestos inspection. The building may not be ready for occupancy again until Jan. 9, but the date is uncertain. The district expects to send families a final plan no later than Sunday. Linn County Public Health has ended its COVID-19 contact tracing efforts. Effective Friday, the county public health agency will no longer conduct case investigation and notify individual residents of positive coronavirus exposure. Eric Bradley, deputy director of Linn County Public Health, said the efforts are being stopped because COVID-19 spread in the county and state are likely too widespread to be slowed by contract tracing. This week Linn County reported more new cases than it has seen in over a year. The department also is taking its cue from the Iowa Department of Public Health, which had ended its routine contact tracing efforts for all individual COVID-19 cases statewide this past August. The Iowa Supreme Court has given Autumn Steele's family another chance to gain full access to the 911 call and police video of the incident in which Steele was fatally shot by police in 2015 outside her Burlington home. In an https://www.iowacourts.gov/courtcases/12502/embed/SupremeCourtOpinion (opinion released Thursday), the state Supreme Court said Adam Klein, the lawyer who originally sought the records on behalf of the Steeles, has legal standing to take the case to the District Court, despite the https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/details-released-in-fatal-police-shooting-of-autumn-steele/ (Iowa Public Information Board deciding in 2019) law enforcement agencies could keep records of the police shooting secret from the public. The court found Klein may seek only judicial review of release of the 911 call, body camera footage and police vehicle footage and may not pursue records already made public. The high court decision comes nearly seven years after Burlington Police Officer Jesse Hill accidentally shot Steele after responding to a domestic disturbance at her house Jan. 6, 2015. Let's end our last 2021 update with something everyone loves: Baby names. According to information compiled by local hospitals, Henry was the most popular name for boys born at Cedar Rapids hospitals in 2021, while Ava and Nora took the top picks for newborn girls. Nationwide, the most popular names for 2021 were Olivia for girls and Liam for boys, according to BabyCenter.com. Looking to find something new to eat? At 45, Lorraine suddenly found herself in the United States, unemployed, divorced, and with two children to take care of. Through various writing jobs, Lorraine was able to revolutionize her life once again, taking her from food stamps to becoming a successful entrepreneur. That being said, certification in this field is not required, but Susie credits it with helping to boost her confidence and credibility. A huge part of what makes Susie successful in her field is that she brings her personal experiences to the table. She is able to relate to her clients and use a combination of those personal experiences and her knowledge to help guide other parents through their sleep struggles. Susie's decision to keep her corporate 9-5 does not mean that her side-hustle is not profitable or successful. She really enjoys the work she does at her corporate job and has found a balance that works for her and her family, where she grows her business on in the evenings and weekends Susie and her husband both are big believers in diversifying their income streams. In addition to having his own corporate job, her husband also maintains a side-hustle by operating a vending company in Chicago. Then, they also have a rental property - which came about when they decided to move to the suburbs to grow their family, but could not sell their condo. However, it's important that we not push too hard. Sometimes the kids may be too young, or they're just not interested in the idea, and that has to be okay. We also have to make sure that we - as parents - are not overworking an idea that is supposed to be a fun learning experience for our children. If it's not the right time, put the idea to rest, and try again later. To find balance with all of their different income streams and family, they hired a nanny to help care for the children during the day. Initially, Susie tried to work with her kids at home without assistance, but quickly realized that she was not working as effectively as she could have been. Their family now benefits from using a nanny for the care of their children, and she credits an online scheduling tool for making scheduling so much easier for their family.
