Change has a way of forcing clarity, even when it arrives through uncertainty, loss, or exhaustion. In this reflective year-end episode, you're invited to pause and take stock of what it really took to keep going. Through honest stories from senior leaders who navigated layoffs, reinvention, and rapid transformation, you'll hear how resilience isn't something you either have or don't, it's something you practice. Guests share deeply personal moments, being laid off after giving everything to a role, rebuilding confidence after broken trust, and redefining leadership in a world reshaped by AI and constant change. This week on the Free Outside Podcast, I am joined by Jeff Eklund, an “ordinary Jeff” calling in from North Carolina who quickly proves he is anything but ordinary. We kick things off with a Jeff quiz show where every answer is a different Jeff, and it immediately derails into the best kind of chaos.Jeff shares his winding path into running, including randomly ripping a 3:16 at Chicago in his 40s, qualifying for Boston (and skipping it because life happened), then stepping away before coming back strong after knee replacements. He talks about what it felt like to start running again, why he refuses to accept “don't run” as a life sentence, and his current mission to break two hours in the half marathon while stalking the competition on Strava like a proper veteran. Then we shift into the second life arc, Jeff and his wife selling basically everything during COVID, moving into a 27-foot Airstream, and traveling to 47 states. We talk minimalism, Facebook Marketplace hustle, getting “pulled around” the country by life, and the underrated places that surprised him most, from Rhode Island to Arizona to the hidden gems of Nebraska.Somewhere in the middle, Jeff goes full historian and takes us deep into his obsession with Theodore Roosevelt (the strenuous life, Rough Riders lore, the teddy bear origin story, and meeting a TR impersonator in North Dakota that turns into a legit hike). We also get a side quest on Fred Harvey restaurants, Harvey Girls, and old-school American road culture, plus a list of roadside oddities that feels like a hallucination timeline from mile 20 of a marathon. We wrap with a quick masterclass in sales (relationships, listening, and handling rejection), lessons Jeff wishes he knew when he was younger, and a perfect cherry on top story about Brooks customer service, a surprise signed Scott Jurek book, and the greatest accidental Instagram mix-up of all time.If you like running, reinvention, road trips, American history tangents, and a guest who can turn one question into six stories, this one is for you.Chapters00:00 The Jeff Quiz Show Begins04:52 Jeff Eklund's Journey into Running07:49 Overcoming Challenges and Finding Motivation10:50 The Impact of Family on Running13:45 Rediscovering the Love for Running16:42 Transitioning to Life in an Airstream19:28 Selling Everything and Embracing Minimalism22:23 Exploring the Open Road and Human Connection24:56 Theodore Roosevelt: A Personal Connection26:29 Meeting the Impersonator: A Unique Encounter28:47 The Legacy of Theodore Roosevelt30:23 The Teddy Bear Origin Story31:40 The Strenuous Life Philosophy33:40 Fred Harvey and the Railroad Era37:24 The Harvey Girls: Pioneers of the West39:07 Underrated States: Personal Reflections41:34 Hidden Gems in the Midwest45:20 Exploring Unique Destinations48:13 The Art of Selling50:29 Reflections on Youth and Education55:10 Customer Service and Personal Connections01:00:18 Celebrating Ordinary HeroesSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside
Why do so many capable young men feel stuck—lacking discipline, direction, or purpose? What separates those who drift through life from those who lead with confidence and conviction? In this episode, we sit down with Steve Montgomery, head of the American Top Team Striking Program, to unpack the hard-earned lessons behind real leadership, discipline, and personal growth.Steve is a Bellator veteran, Ultimate Fighter 25 contestant, and two-time UFC veteran, with a perfect 6–0 amateur record and a 10–6 professional MMA career against world-class competition. With over 15 years of training and 11 years coaching at American Top Team Headquarters, Steve has evolved from elite fighter to elite mentor. He is also a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Bob DeLuca and has coached fighters across the UFC, Bellator, One FC, and beyond.More than titles and wins, Steve brings a passion for building disciplined, high-character individuals. This conversation explores how adversity shapes leaders, why standards matter, and how mentorship can change the trajectory of a life.If you're looking for clarity, strength, and a blueprint for becoming a better man—this episode delivers.Quotes:"You become a product of your environment, but there comes a point where you start to flip the script and make your environment a product of you.""Winning sucks the whole time—until your hand is raised. Everything wants to quit, but that's what makes victory matter.""You have to just do it. If you want to understand something, don't just study it—go do it."Actionable Takeaways:Audit your environment. Take 10 minutes to list the people, habits, and spaces you spend the most time in. Ask yourself: Is this environment shaping me into who I want to become—or holding me back? Make one intentional change this week.Set and enforce one non-negotiable standard. Choose a single daily discipline (training, reading, sleep, prayer, or skill practice) and commit to it for the next 30 days—no excuses, no renegotiation.Seek correction, not comfort. Identify one area where you've been avoiding feedback. Ask a coach, mentor, or trusted peer for honest input—and listen without defending yourself.Lead before you're ready. Look for one opportunity this week to model leadership through action: show up early, help someone improve, or take responsibility without being asked.Redefine winning. Reflect on this question: Am I chasing applause, or am I building long-term character? Write down what “winning” should look like for your life five years from now—and what habits must change to get there. Conclusion:True leadership isn't built in comfort—it's forged through discipline, accountability, and the willingness to grow when no one is watching. Steve Montgomery's journey reminds us that the same principles that create elite fighters also shape strong men: clear standards, the right environment, and mentors who care enough to correct.Whether you're a young man searching for direction or a leader investing in others, this episode challenges you to raise your standards, embrace hard work, and commit to becoming the kind of person others can trust and follow.

On this episode of Building the Premier Accounting Firm, host Roger Knecht and his guest, Ken Lacroix, discuss the evolving role of accounting professionals in providing CFO and advisory services. They explore the shift from compliance to forward-thinking financial planning, leveraging technology, and the importance of storytelling in communicating financial insights to business owners. This episode offers key strategies for firms looking to add more value beyond traditional accounting. In This Episode: 00:00 Introduction to Ken Lacroix 02:00 The Anti-Accountant & Storytelling 05:17 Technology in CFO Services 09:17 From Compliance to CFO Mindset 13:50 Engaging Staff and Valuing Insights 17:09 CFO Services: Sales and Tech Stack 22:16 Pricing & Meeting Structure 27:11 Overcoming Challenges in CFO Adoption 31:00 Entrepreneurial Wisdom and Wellness 36:05 Closing Thoughts and Resources Key Takeaways: Transition from historical data entry to real-time financial analysis for better decision-making. Embrace the role of a storyteller and translator, making complex financial data understandable and actionable for clients. Leverage technology to automate manual processes, freeing up staff for higher-value advisory work. Overcome the "what if I'm wrong?" mindset by understanding that estimates, even if imperfect, provide valuable targets and earlier problem detection. Recognize the value of experience and wisdom when pricing advisory services, moving beyond hourly billing to value-based fees. Featured Quotes: "We're that translator, that one that's trying to take this narrative and put it into context so that they can make informed business decisions." - Roger Knecht "The nature of accounting has been so manual. And for us, we need data that's more granular, more timely, and basically we need it to be instant." - Ken Lacroix "It's a shift from being paid for being right… And now we're asking them to be paid in essence, to be wrong, but just slightly less wrong than no estimate at all." - Ken Lacroix Behind the Story: Ken Lacroix, with decades of experience in guiding businesses through growth and financial restructuring, offers a unique perspective on the accounting profession. His journey from "anti-accountant" to fractional CFO highlights the critical need for forward-looking financial guidance in small to mid-sized businesses. He emphasizes leveraging technology to provide real-time insights and the importance of courageous leadership to inspire staff to embrace an advisory role. What If Everything You've Been Told About Building Wealth Is Wrong? Have you ever wondered why the financial industry treats entrepreneurs like they should act like employees? Save for retirement. Max out your 401(k). Lock your money away for 30 years. That advice might work for someone with a steady paycheck and a pension. But for business owners? It's a recipe for disaster. In Part 2 of our conversation with Perry Marshall, we're pulling back the curtain on what's broken in the financial planning world—and how we're using Profit First, Infinite Banking, and AI tools to help business owners build wealth on their own terms. You'll discover: Why the conventional financial industry is designed to extract money from entrepreneurs, not empower them The difference between saving for retirement and building actual liquidity (and why it matters more than you think) How we combine Profit First and Infinite Banking to give business owners control over their cash flow AND their wealth-building The AI tools we built to help clients understand their "financial nervous system" before they ever talk to us Why we stopped explaining what we do and started letting people experience it instead Key Quote: "The financial industry is designed to move your money to Wall Street. We're designed to help you build a healthy, profitable business first—and then build wealth from that foundation." This episode is for business owners who've felt like the conventional financial advice never quite fit. If you've ever thought, "There has to be a better way" … there is. And we're showing you how. (00:00) - Becoming a Physician(09:39) - Navigating Pre-Med College Life(17:20) - Navigating MD-PhD Gap Years(24:43) - Overcoming Challenges in McAt Preparation(35:31) - Choosing Medical Schools in New York(39:11) - Reflections on Pursuing MedicineGrowing up with a pediatrician aunt, Julia was captivated by the world of medicine from an early age. Her story is one of passion and perseverance, shaped by influential mentors and a deep love for science and biology. We explore how her early exposure to healthcare set her on a path marked by determination, from shadowing opportunities in high school to embracing the rigors of college science courses. Julia's journey is a testament to the profound impact of nurturing mentors and the power of early influences in shaping a lifelong commitment to the medical field. For those considering the premed track, the journey can be transformative, as experienced by a student who transitioned from Gonzaga University to the University of Pennsylvania. Initially drawn to Gonzaga for its small class sizes, they discovered a passion for neuroscience that led them to seek a university with more robust resources. At Penn, the pre-health office and a vibrant community of peers provided essential support, including MCAT preparation and research opportunities at CHOP. This narrative highlights the importance of aligning educational environments with personal aspirations and the value of a supportive academic community. The road to medicine is often fraught with challenges, notably the MCAT, which can test even the most dedicated students. Our candid discussion on the arduous journey of MCAT preparation reveals that struggles are common, but perseverance and strategic changes in study approaches can lead to success. For those pursuing an MD/PhD, like our guest, taking gap years to gain research experience can prove invaluable. Whether it's choosing the right medical school or overcoming skepticism from others, the journey demands resilience and alignment with one's passions. As we reflect on these stories, we hope to offer encouragement and guidance for future medical professionals navigating their unique paths.

Rabbi Alan Morinis, founder of the Mussar Institute, is a leading figure in the contemporary revival of the Mussar movement, a 1,100-year-old authentic Jewish personal and communal spiritual tradition. A Rhodes Scholar and anthropologist (whose focus had been Hindu religious pilgrimages), he reached a personal turning point in his life in 1997 that led him to seek out the late Rabbi Yechiel Yitzchok Perr, an accomplished master who stood in an unbroken line of transmission of the Mussar tradition.Following years of study, he reinterpreted the ancient Mussar learnings and practices for modern audiences in Climbing Jacob's Ladder (2002) and Everyday Holiness (2007). To address the growing public interest in Mussar, he founded The Mussar Institute in 2004.He went on to author two more books, Every Day, Holy Day (2010), With Heart in Mind (2014), and now a new book, The Shabbat Effect. Alan lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, and continues to explore and interpret original Mussar sources in Hebrew and is making these valuable teachings available to the contemporary world.--Please rate and review the Empowered Jewish Living podcast on whatever platform you stream it. Hello! Nice to connect with fellow Intermittent Fasters from around the world. My name is Hope, and I welcome you to join me in reflecting on my new journey of committing to losing weight for the last time. I live in Maine with my supportive and loving husband and best friend, Kevin, near the beach, alongside our dogs, Bea and Lou. I joined the Fasting Highways Patreon community in May of 2025 and am not looking back. From being placed on a diet as a preteen through adulthood, of going through nursing school, getting married and having 3 children, getting divorced, having anadult child diagnosed with a mental health issue, & working through Covid as a RN,,,,, I continued to yo-yo up and down with weight fluctuations and trying various diets (cabbage soup diet, weight watchers, slim fast, South Beach, lowcarb, Adkins, faith based intuitive eating plan, etc.) only repeating the same patterns. Gain weight, try another diet, lose some weight, regain, plus some. Sound familiar? Self-reflecting on how I got to this place, I have realised that I turned to food in unhealthy ways to manage my stress &suppress unwanted feelings, mainly overeating sugary foods, and had unrealistic expectations around weight loss. It is about the journey now and being patient with myself, to create a healthier lifestyle while staying plugged into alike-minded community for support & encouragement, while being consistent. The journey so far has brought freedom from food noise, a mindset shift, & has evolved into so much more than a 25-pound weight loss. I'm just getting started! Our Patreon Community Please consider joining the Fasting Highway Patreon community. It has been great for all who have joined. (00:00) - Journey From Nursing to Medical School(09:54) - The Path to Medical School(20:04) - Exploring Transition to Medical School(35:11) - Transitioning From Nursing to Medicine(39:04) - Overcoming Challenges on Path to MedicineMaria's journey from nursing to medical school is a testament to unyielding determination and the courage to pursue one's dreams despite formidable challenges. Imagine juggling a demanding full-time job while navigating the rigorous curriculum of nursing school. This was Maria's reality until she realized her passion leaned more toward the role of a physician, a path that promised the flexibility she needed. With support from mentors and social media connections, Maria embarked on a non-traditional journey to medical school, overcoming multiple hurdles along the way.The road to medical school was paved with obstacles, particularly the daunting MCAT. Maria opens up about the pitfalls of traditional study methods and the transformative impact of focusing on practice questions instead. Her experience underscores the importance of perseverance, especially when initial efforts fall short, as seen when her first application met with silence due to a low MCAT score. With resilience and a strategic shift in preparation, Maria reemerged stronger, balancing her time as a medical assistant with a renewed focus on her studies, eventually achieving a score that opened doors to interviews.Maria's story resonates deeply with anyone who has faced barriers in pursuing their ambitions. As an immigrant from a low-income family, she courageously balanced familial expectations with her personal aspirations, even when it meant turning down seemingly secure opportunities like a special master's program. Her nursing background, particularly her experience in a pulmonary step-down unit, provided invaluable skills and insights that enriched her medical journey. Maria's unwavering commitment to her goal of becoming a doctor, despite the setbacks and doubts, offers inspiration to aspiring medical students everywhere: no matter the path, persistence and belief in oneself can lead to success.
