In this bilingual podcast, Mayor Edith Escarcega, from the Colorado Springs Sister City Nuevos Casas Grandes in Chihuahua Mexico, talks about her path, at 40, to be the second woman mayor of her town. She discusses what a Sister City program is, what the priorities for her Mexican community are, how women and families are valued in her region and what brought her to Colorado Springs for her second visit. This recording was made possible with the support of Viva Marketing and Pikes Peak Women member Moni Hernandez, as she brought not only Mayor Edith to the attention of Pikes Peak Women but also another wildly successful Fiestas Patrias to the region to kick off Hispanic Heritage month 2025 from September 15 to October 15.Subscribe for more episodes, and reach out to us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/PikesPeakWomen and let us know what you thought of today's episode. After nearly 400 conversations with Olympians, Paralympians, and trailblazing women athletes from 55 countries, one thing is clear: no two stories are alike. Some athletes train with world-class facilities, others without basic equipment. Some are household names, others are fighting for visibility in sports you've never even seen on TV. And yet, across all these differences, certain themes echo again and again. That's what this new Best Of series is all about: spotlighting both the range of experiences and the threads that connect them. We've pulled together the most powerful moments across years of conversations, including:✨ Best Advice to Younger Selves — from “give yourself grace to be a beginner” to “don't dim your light for anyone.” ✨ Best Stories of Resilience — tales of athletes coming back from devastating injuries, near-misses, and moments when the world doubted them most. ✨ Best Moments of Role Modelship — athletes lifting the next generation, mentoring teammates, and carrying entire communities with them to the world stage. ✨ Best Stories of Identity & Joy — how athletes embrace who they are on and off the field, from glitter on the track to pride in their heritage. and many more! You'll hear voices as different as the sports they represent, yet together, they reveal what it really takes to rise to the top. This isn't just one story. It's hundreds woven together. And this is just the beginning. In this episode, UE Hispanic Edition, we celebrate Latina pride, identity, and heritage through the voices of three extraordinary athletes. Julimar Ávila (Honduras, swimming) shares how family roots and long hours at the pool shaped her love for the water and her pride in representing Honduras on the Olympic stage. Lavonne Idlette (Dominican Republic, track and field) reflects on her journey from Hampton University to the 2012 Olympics and the unbreakable bond she found with her mother's homeland. Alejandra Aybar (Dominican Republic, Paralympic swimming) speaks about resilience, respect, and breaking misconceptions around Paralympic athletes. As we close out Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the athletes who proudly represent their heritage — honoring their voices, their journeys, and the cultures that shaped them.Flame Bearers is a women's sports storytelling studio, illuminating the unsung stories of exceptional women athletes from around the world. October is a busy month: We honor Pink October, Hispanic Heritage and Filipino American History Month. In order to give myself a bit of a mental health break, I am going to be sharing some episodes that you might have missed. This interview was recorded 5 years ago in celebration of my mom's 70th birthday. We discuss her experience with breast cancer and her healing process. My mom did not opt for chemotherapy, but instead healed with her strong spirit and practiced the ancient art form of tai chi chuan. We of course do not recommend this for everyone, but listen on to hear survival story. The post 433. ICYMI Suzy Chan on breast cancer, tai chi and music first appeared on Sifu Mimi Chan.

Come out and support the Kewanee Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Saturday, September 27th. The festivities will run from 4 to 11 PM at the Kewanee American Legion, located at 116 East 3rd Street. Hosted by the Kewanee Commission on Human Relations, the celebration promises an evening of live music, delicious food, and local vendors, highlighting the rich cultural traditions of the Hispanic community. Organizers invite residents to enjoy the festivities and support the ongoing efforts to promote diversity, inclusion, and cultural appreciation throughout the Kewanee area. Daniela Garcia-Lozano, Dulce Contreras, America Gobellan, Sayde Tapia, and Jessica Fornander joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to give you a rundown of the festivities and a hint about the first-ever award winner, a person who has had an impact on the community, the Orgullo Hispano Award. The Kewanee community is eagerly anticipating the announcement of this year's Orgullo Hispano honoree, a distinction given to a local individual who has made significant contributions. Organizers will reveal the winner on Friday evening, and attendees have the chance to guess the honoree's identity for a prize at Saturday's celebration. The clues point to a notable medical professional: a La Salle Medical School graduate who completed residency in Davenport, Iowa, advocated for LPNs to work in clinics, and participated in medical missions across Central America and Africa. Community members are abuzz, speculating who will receive this honor. Attendees can enjoy a vibrant lineup: recognition awards kick off festivities, followed by traditional dance and live musical performances. The winners of the student art contest will be announced during the opening ceremony at 5 PM. DJ Tony Beats and Tamborazo De Oro will take the stage, ensuring energy remains high throughout the celebration. Food vendors promise a range of delicious options, and a photo booth will capture lasting memories. The event spotlights cultural pride while uniting the community through music, dance, and flavors from across the Hispanic world. Doors open to all interested in joining the celebration.

This month, guest host and executive producer Antonio Caro pulls back the curtain with acclaimed set designer Gerardo Díaz Sánchez—the creative mind shaping this year's Hispanic Heritage Awards stage. From the show's guiding theme of gold (not of greed, but reciprocity and ancestral respect) to designing a world that works both live and on TV, Gerardo breaks down how he turns stories into spaces, memory into architecture, and heritage into design. They get into: Bad Bunny's Puerto Rico–rooted staging and what it signals about home and identity; how queerness and culture shape Gerardo's voice; the do-or-die realities of designing with tight budgets; and the line between spectacle and intimacy when the set should shine—and when it should disappear so the story can lead.In this episode:The vision behind this year's Hispanic Heritage Awards set and its “gold” as offering & reciprocityDesigning for two audiences at once: the room and the national PBS broadcastFrom Guayama, Puerto Rico, to YaleStage Design Process Deep-DiveAuthenticity on screenLearn more about Gerardo's work at https://www.gerardodiazsanchez.com/ Watch the Episode on YouTube @HispanicHeritageFollow: @FritangaPodcast on Instagram today!Reminder: Watch the 38th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards on PBS – September 26 at 9/8c and stream on PBS.org + the PBS app in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Language can be the difference between getting help in a crisis or suffering in silence. It's Hispanic Heritage month, and in this special edition of 'Chiefs Chat' on the Cape CopCast, Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore sits down with Officer Carlos Prieto and Officer Amanda Rodriguez to explore how the police force is evolving to serve its rapidly growing Spanish-speaking community. While officially documented at 25% Spanish-speaking, Chief Sizemore believes Cape Coral's Hispanic population is closer to 30% or higher. This population shift presents unique challenges for emergency services, particularly during high-stress situations when communication barriers can mean the difference between life and death. As Officer Prieto eloquently explains, when a domestic violence victim sees an officer who speaks their language, it creates an immediate sense of trust and comfort that encourages them to share crucial information. Both officers bring powerful personal perspectives to the discussion. Officer Prieto shares his journey from Cuba in 2012, fleeing communism and waiting five years to become a US citizen before joining the force. Officer Rodriguez, born in Puerto Rico and a Cape Coral resident for over 20 years, transitioned from being a 911 call taker to fulfilling her dream of becoming a police officer. Their stories illuminate why representation matters in effective policing, beyond simply meeting diversity statistics. The message to Cape Coral's Spanish-speaking residents is clear and compassionate: don't hesitate to call the police when you need help. It's about ensuring everyone enjoys the safety and protection they deserve. As Officer Rodriguez reassures listeners, "If you come to this country to work and fight and move forward, we're here to support you."

September is a celebration of many Latin American countries' independence days, as well as Hispanic Heritage Month. A celebration will be held in honor of Hispanic Heritage this Sunday at the Idaho Falls Waterfront for all to learn about and celebrate Hispanic culture.
National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month is the period from September 15 to October 15, where we pay particular attention to the contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans in the United States, and celebrate the group's rich heritage and diverse cultures. This timeframe encompasses the independence days of several Latin American countries: Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. It's also an ideal time for us to restate our commitment to providing safe and welcoming schools for all students, regardless of immigration or any other status. Students who identify as Hispanic or of Latino heritage comprise 41 percent of our population in HSD, which is the largest of any demographic group. We believe our multilingual community brings a tapestry of linguistic and cultural assets and are proud to serve these students through a variety of programs - some of which serve them specifically, others of which are accessible to students of all backgrounds. Our PK-12 Dual Language programs serve more than 3,500 students who learn in both Spanish and English, and expand their socio-cultural competence. We have a thriving Latino Parent Advisory Council at the district level, and several “paquitos” at the school level to help ensure our Spanish-speaking families can receive information and provide feedback in meaningful ways, and help our district and schools with events and programming that celebrates their cultures and customs. Our schools will be sharing relevant information with students about events, people, and customs connected to Hispanic and Latino Heritage over the course of the next several weeks. The City of Hillsboro and Centro Cultural are also hosting a wide range of events, including the El Grito Festival, Binational Health Fair, and more. And save the date of Thursday, October 2, for HSD's Hispanic Heritage event featuring activities, entertainment, food, and community. Our featured event was the kick-off to the 2025-26 school year, which officially began on Wednesday and Thursday, September 3 and 4. Students and staff alike were excited to get back to class and embark upon a new year of learning, growth, and memories in the making. Visit our website to see a gallery of photos.Having complete and accurate information about each student and family is critical to ensuring we are able to contact you in case of an emergency. Please login to your ParentVUE account and take a few moments to review and update your student's information by Tuesday, September 30. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. Please also bookmark our district website: hsd.k12.or.us to stay informed about what's happening in our district and schools.

Tantz Aerine showcased LGBTQ+ comics and creators for Pride month in June with the help of Skyangel, Mainly on Bluesky. It went to so well that she came up with the amazing idea of doing more monthly features for other themes. She doesn't want to dictate to us what those theme should be though, she wants input into the idea so we can all come up with good themes together! The idea behind a month long showcase isn't to be socially conscious so much as having a reason to bring more promotion to creators- that's important to remember. This is marketing :) We have a forum thread discussion* where people have shared their own recommendations. InkyMoondrop, Bravo1102, Lothar, Dragonsong12, PaulEberhardt, Kawaiidaigakusei, and J_Scarbrough had some great suggestions already! PaulEberhardt: - April as Autism acceptance Month. - December as Universal Human Rights Month - December's also Learn a Foreign Language Month. - October is Dyslexia, Depression and Breast Cancer. Bravo1102: - February is Black African heritage month - March is Woman's heritage month - November is for war, veterans and remembrance. Dragonsong12: - Hispanic heritage - Mental health Lothar: - Relationships - Mental health -Drugs and alcohol - Poverty - Religion - Politics - War - Existential dread Ozoneocean (me): – Erotic comics awareness month – mixed media comics – Newspaper strips – Political creators – War – Romance – Female creators – Creators who started before the digital age. Kawaiidaigakusei: - Alien Month - Furry and Scaly Month - mental health - Language Other than English Month - Fantasy Month J_Scarbrough: - October: Scary comics - December: Christmas, good will, happy celebration theme. All good suggestions but some of them can be joined into others I think? Something like “Hispanic Heritage” could go into a category like Kawaii's “Language Other than English Month”, and “Poverty” and “Drugs and alcohol” could be subsets of “Mental Health”? Also on the Quackcast Banes suggested February for “Romance” because of valentines day. Please give your opinions and suggestion! Tantz wants a popular vote of these. Today, we're bringing Hispanic Heritage month to a resounding close and celebrating Juan Felipe Herrera's recent MacArthur Fellowship by revisiting my 2015 interview with the former U.S. Poet Laureate and two-time NEA Literature Fellow. In this podcast, Herrera reflects on his upbringing, his love for language, and how his mother's storytelling shaped his own creative voice. He also shares how his poetry addresses displacement and global issues, using his book Senegal Taxi as an example of his willingness to explore stories from other parts of the world. Herrera talks about taking risks as a writer, and the importance of crossing borders, whether they be cultural, linguistic, or emotional.Herrera also speaks about the universality of poetry and its ability to unite people through shared experiences. He describes his time as California's Poet Laureate, where he launched community projects focused on inclusivity and uplifting diverse voices. Throughout the episode, Herrera offers insights into his creative process, including his playful use of language, his bilingual writing, and his commitment to making poetry accessible. This episode is a celebration of a poet who is always pushing the boundaries of form and subject while staying deeply connected to his cultural roots.
