Tantz Aerine showcased LGBTQ+ comics and creators for Pride month in June with the help of Skyangel, Mainly on Bluesky. It went to so well that she came up with the amazing idea of doing more monthly features for other themes. She doesn't want to dictate to us what those theme should be though, she wants input into the idea so we can all come up with good themes together! The idea behind a month long showcase isn't to be socially conscious so much as having a reason to bring more promotion to creators- that's important to remember. This is marketing :) We have a forum thread discussion* where people have shared their own recommendations. InkyMoondrop, Bravo1102, Lothar, Dragonsong12, PaulEberhardt, Kawaiidaigakusei, and J_Scarbrough had some great suggestions already! PaulEberhardt: - April as Autism acceptance Month. - December as Universal Human Rights Month - December's also Learn a Foreign Language Month. - October is Dyslexia, Depression and Breast Cancer. Bravo1102: - February is Black African heritage month - March is Woman's heritage month - November is for war, veterans and remembrance. Dragonsong12: - Hispanic heritage - Mental health Lothar: - Relationships - Mental health -Drugs and alcohol - Poverty - Religion - Politics - War - Existential dread Ozoneocean (me): – Erotic comics awareness month – mixed media comics – Newspaper strips – Political creators – War – Romance – Female creators – Creators who started before the digital age. Kawaiidaigakusei: - Alien Month - Furry and Scaly Month - mental health - Language Other than English Month - Fantasy Month J_Scarbrough: - October: Scary comics - December: Christmas, good will, happy celebration theme. All good suggestions but some of them can be joined into others I think? Something like “Hispanic Heritage” could go into a category like Kawaii's “Language Other than English Month”, and “Poverty” and “Drugs and alcohol” could be subsets of “Mental Health”? Also on the Quackcast Banes suggested February for “Romance” because of valentines day. Please give your opinions and suggestion! Tantz wants a popular vote of these. As the Latino population and economic influence grow, so do efforts to downplay our contributions and culture. In this episode, we talk with Dario Collado from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation about the political and cultural shifts affecting Hispanic heritage, why some want to mitigate our influence, and what we can do to ensure our history and impact aren't ignored. From policy changes to media representation, they explore what's at stake and how unity can help preserve and strengthen Latino identity in the U.S.
Resiliency Within's host, Elaine Miller-Karas, and her guest, Martha Parra, share the beauty and values of their Latino culture. Martha's family came to California from Mexico, and Elaine's mother and grandmother came from El Salvador. They will share the values they learned from their families and how their rich heritage has inspired their personal and professional journeys as community leaders. They will also share their families' challenges as they immigrate to a new country. Martha will discuss traditional healing practices learned from her father and how he inspired her work as a social worker. They also share the challenges of racism and colonialism immigrants face. This is a time in US history when it is essential to embrace the richness and value of Latino culture to counter the disparaging comments being made. Martha will share two programs initiated by the Reagan administration that gave her and her family a pathway to legal residency. The Community Resiliency Model and the Trauma Resiliency Model and how they have been accessible to the Latino community. Martha pioneered the first Community Resiliency Model Teacher Training in Spanish in the pilot study through California's Mental Health Services Act and the County of San Bernardino's Department of Behavioral Health. Martha will share her work as an Immigration Evaluations Evaluator and her work with Asylum, Hardship, the Violence Against Women Act, and victims of human trafficking. The diverse Latino culture is rich with traditions. The identities of Latinas and Latinos are shaped by geography, heritage, race, and gender. Latinas and Latinos embrace their heritage and contribute to the culture of the United States. They will share how their families taught them compassion, courage, strength, service, and hard work.

October is Hispanic Heritage Month. Carlos Graupera is the CEO of Tec Centro Workforce Center and spent 50 years as the CEO of the Spanish American Civic Association. He joined The Spark to share the importance of highlighting Hispanic Heritage month. “It is appropriate that Latinos and Latinos in Pennsylvania, because that's where we're at, that community is celebrated because it's roughly 8% of the state population. It is not an insignificant group of people, and it's continues to grow and it's making its presence in some very important urban areas. Allentown, Bethlehem. Redding, of course, Philadelphia, Lancaster and beyond. Those city centers are being revitalized by the influx of Latinos, setting up businesses, buying homes and really providing the energy so that these cities are able to rethink themselves.” Tec Centro in Lancaster offers bilingual education and skill training in Lancaster. Throughout the month, the organization will highlight the impact of investing in diverse workforce development. “We're busy training people day in and day out so that they can climb out of poverty. And that's important because among Latinos, the poverty rate is 32% compared to all Pennsylvanians, about 14%. So, we have a lot of work to do. And we try to train people as best we can so that they can, one at a time, overcome poverty, become part of the economic mainstream, become homeowners. And that's our celebration of the Hispanic Heritage Month. Just keep doing what we're doing over and over again.” Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A vibrant mosaic of culture and heritage is coming to life at the University of Indianapolis. It's the art exhibit “To The Roots, Embracing Heritage.”The exhibition uses diverse artistic mediums to showcase the resilience and beauty of cultural roots, which is especially meaningful at the University of Indianapolis, where students note the relatively small Hispanic population.Imelda Pozos, a UIndy undergraduate student, said, “The artwork doesn't solely represent Hispanic and Latino culture, but mostly, it is made by Hispanic and Latino individuals. We have people who originate from Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico. The artists from those decades are showing their artwork here.”The UIndy exhibition provides a platform for students to see their heritage represented and appreciated.Leslie Samperio, a UIndy graduate student, said, “I know that there are sometimes stereotypes within our culture that we can't be sure of because of how we look or how we might be or come about. However, as you can see with this art gallery, many students have succeeded in doing something out of the ordinary.”A standout feature is an interactive map that encourages students to explore the diverse origins of their peers, faculty, and community members, which extend far beyond Mexico.CariAnn Freed, director of institutional being at UIndy, said, “One thing that I wanted to emphasize in this gallery is the experience of English-language learners and having an opportunity to work with our students, and all of the art descriptions are translated.”“Hasta Las Raices: To The Roots” offers a unique opportunity to experience a space of reflection, dialogue, and appreciation of our community's diverse backgrounds.Samperio said, “I think we should do a whole Hispanic-oriented art gallery just because it is such a big space, and it is important to show students that there is an area they can come to outside the whole campus that is just for them.”Through December, visitors are invited to explore the diverse and vibrant heritage that defines the Hispanic experience, strength, and identity.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
