Welcome to the Elevator World News Podcast. Today's podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com PROVINCETOWN INCLINED ELEVATOR INSPECTION CONTINUES The newly constructed inclined elevator at the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum in Provincetown, Massachusetts, is still going through inspections after being declared fully functional in April, the Cape Cod Times reports. “We've learned elevator controllers and elevator safety is quite rigorous,” said K. David Weidner, executive director of the monument and museum. “'Safety first,' is our motto.” The elevator, known as the Bradford Access Project, is designed to use a 162-ft length of double rails to bring the 3000-lb glass cab, with up to 18 people at a time, up from Bradford Street to the top of High Pole Hill, which is approximately 85-ft high, in 2 min. This elevator is the first of its size and magnitude in the Commonwealth, the source reports. The project is going through a series of pre-inspections by the Massachusetts Board of Elevator Regulations. The board regulates the construction, installation and operation of all elevators in the state. Weidner told the Engineering News Record that the addition of the conveyance is expected to boost revenue by as much as 50%. The museum has averaged up to 100,000 visitors annually. Work began in 2020 and it was intended to be operational in May 2021. On Standish Street in Provincetown, Mass., there is a bed and breakfast called The Victoria House. This gay-friendly guest house has 19th century charm, free wifi, air conditioning, and continental breakfast is served daily on the patio. It is close to Commercial Street and its many restaurants, art galleries and kitchy shops. Or visit the Pilgrim Monument and Museum, take a dune buggy ride, or soak up some sun (and take a dip in the freezing cold Atlantic) at Herring Cove beach, all of which are close by. Oh, and it may also be haunted.

76. 400 Years Post-Mayflower, the Provincetown Museum Rethinks Its Historical Branding

Sometimes, a historical event is all about the branding. And the brand of Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts as the spot where the Mayflower pilgrims first disembarked 400 years ago this year is pretty strong. The branding is strong enough to override the fact that the Mayflower actually first landed on the other side of Cape Cod, in what is now Provincetown. The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum commemorates that site. And even within a museum that’s trying to correct an inaccuracy, it has its own to grapple with: the museum used to portray the meetings between the members of the Wampanoag Nation and the Mayflower pilgrims with dehumanizing murals. In this episode, Courtney Hurst, board president of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, describes how the museum is working to correct these inaccuracies by working closely with the Wampanoag Nation. And as the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower arrival approaches, the museum is in the middle of yet another rebrand. Just as the word pilgrim was reframed by Mayflower passenger William Bradford as a way to tie his journey to stories in the Christian Bible, the museum is reframing the word pilgrim to include recent Provincetown history. This episode was recorded at the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum on February 22, 2020. Lake Scargo in Dennis, MA (on Cape Cod) is the home of a colorful Native American legend about how the Lake came to be -- one of many such Native tales about the origins of natural phenomena and landmarks. Princess Scargo, daughter of chief Sagem of the Bobuset tribe, is presented with four little fish by a suitor, and the rest is the stuff of legend. Today, you can find descendants of these silvery fish (no, not silverfish) in Scargo Lake. And you can get a good look at the Lake, and the surrounding territoryterritorty, by climbing Scargo Tower in East Dennis. Not a terribly high structure, but it's located atop the highest point on the Cape, so the view is pretty impressive. But we got a look at an even more impressive tower, which affords an even more impressive view: Pilgrim Monument, the 252-ft. monolith in Provincetown, right on the tip of the Cape. The tower commemorates the arrival of the Pilgrims in November 1620, when they hammered out the groundbreaking Mayflower Compact. The cornerstone was laid in 1907 by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt for this controversially designed structure modeled after the Torre del Mangia in Siena, Italy, and construction was completed in 1910. We biked to Provincetown from Nickerson State Park, a distance of about 35 miles, and stayed at a campground just outside town in our teeny tiny tents. Then we used our bikes to explore this colorful little seaside resort with lots of historic buildings, the largest percentage of Portuguese population in the country, and also the largest percentage gay population. Although the year-round census is only 3500, it explodes to 50,000 during the summer. There are three resident theatres in this town that was once the home of playwrights Tennessee Williams and Eugene O'Neil, as well as novelist Norman Mailer. Happy Listening!
