This is a Vintage episode from 2010.Why This Episode MattersHardwick, Vermont became an early test case for whether local food and small agricultural businesses could help revitalize a struggling rural economy.Ben Hewitt challenges the feel-good version of the local food story: What happens when artisanal food creates jobs but remains too expensive for many people in the community? The conversation explores how small farms can compete through distinctive, value-added products rather than commodity agriculture.Mark, Francis and Ben dig into questions that remain central to the food system: affordability, farm viability, subsidies, food access and what “sustainable” actually means. The ConversationIn 2010, Hardwick, Vermont was attracting national attention for an unusual concentration of farmers, food producers and agricultural entrepreneurs. Writer and farmer Ben Hewitt chronicled the town in The Town That Food Saved, but he wasn't interested in presenting Hardwick as a simple local-food success story.Ben joins Mark Pascal and Francis Schott to examine what was actually happening in this working-class Vermont community from Jasper Hill's approach to artisan cheese and the rise of value-added agriculture to the advantages of diversified farms and shorter supply chains. The conversation soon gets to the harder question: Can a local food economy truly strengthen a community if the people producing the food can't always afford to eat it? Mark, Francis and Ben debate the economics of small farms, food access, agricultural subsidies and the tension between building viable food businesses and making good food broadly accessible. They also take on the language of sustainability, the growing concentration of the food and seed industries, and whether a more decentralized food system could create something both economically durable and better connected to the communities it feeds.Guest BioBen Hewitt is a Vermont farmer and writer and the author of The Town That Food Saved: How One Community Found Vitality in Local Food. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Wired, Men's Journal and other publications.Timestamps1:00 Ben Hewitt and the Hardwick, Vermont story3:00 How food businesses began reshaping a working-class town8:00 The “agri-preneurial” revolution and Jasper Hill12:00 Why small farms need value-added products13:00 The affordability problem with local food19:00 Farm subsidies and an unequal playing field23:00 Shorter supply chains and diversified farms27:00 Food access, Pies for the People and sustainable businesses35:00 What “sustainable” really means and who controls the food systemInfoBen's booksThe Town That Food Saved: How One Community Found Vitality in Local Food Making Supper SafeSubscribe: Restaurant Guys' Regularhttps://restaurantguysregulars.buzzsprout.com/Magyar Bankhttps://www.magbank.com/Stage Left Wine Shophttps://www.stageleftwineshop.com/Our PlacesStage Left Steakhttps://www.stageleft.com/Catherine Lombardi Restauranthttps://www.catherinelombardi.com/Stage Left Wineshophttps://www.stageleftwineshop.com/Reach Out to The Guys!

Ep2. ¿Qué es Cristo para ti?
The Disney version of Johnny Appleseed has a cheerful barefoot man in a tin pot hat scattering apple seeds for grateful pioneers to bake into pies. The real John Chapman collected his seeds for free from cidery waste, planted them into strategically fenced nurseries on land he bought ahead of the settlement line, and sold the resulting trees to colonists who used the apples almost exclusively to make hard cider and applejack brandy. He died owning 1,200 acres across three states but never touched the money, because his Swedenborgian faith taught him that suffering in this life meant blessings in the next. He wore coffee sacks as shirts, went barefoot through Ohio winters, and entertained settler children by sticking needles into his calloused feet. Today's guest is Isaac Fitzgerald, author of *American Rambler: Walking the Trail of Johnny Appleseed*. We discuss how Chapman's father was a Minuteman who fought at Concord and later ended up in debtor's prison, why the Northwest Indian War of the 1790s, one of the worst military disasters in early American history, created the very frontier Chapman would spend his life planting, and how a forgotten Irish frontiersman named Dan McQuay who walked 1,200 miles home from New Orleans through hostile wilderness may have been the real inspiration for Chapman's rambling life.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Enjoy the episode? Send us a text! You made a commitment. But you're not sure you'd make it again. That's where a lot of people are. And in this episode, I answer their questions honestly. One woman has been married 41 years. She loves her husband. She's just never been in love with him. She's asking if it's too late, or if this whole thing was a 41-year mistake.Another asks the thing most separated spouses are afraid to say out loud. If we're both doing fine apart, if we're both becoming our best selves, what would ever bring us back? And one man wants an answer to something bigger. Does God change hearts? Or has his wife's decision already settled it?Here's what I keep coming back to. Love is a choice. But it's also a process. Follow the path and you can fall in love with almost anyone. Stop following it and you can fall out of love without ever meaning to.PIES is where it starts. Physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual. But it's the first step, not the finish line. Becoming your best self doesn't pull someone back on its own. Two people don't fall in love just by standing side by side as their best selves. There has to be a lean in. There has to be acceptance. A safe place where someone is finally allowed to be who they are without being asked to change. If you're struggling in your marriage, don't wait.
