He used to be the editor of the New York Times Book Review, a features writer for Vanity Fair, and a writer for Prospect magazine. He's currently a contributing writer for the Washington Post. His many books include The Death of Conservatism and Whittaker Chambers: A Biography, and his new one is Buckley: The Life and the Revolution That Changed America. It's a huge tome — almost 1,000 pages! — but fascinating, with new and startling revelations, and a breeze to read. It's crack to me, of course, and we went long — a Rogan-worthy three hours. But I loved it, and hope you do too. It's not just about Buckley; it's about now, and how Buckleyism is more similar to Trumpism than I initially understood. Officials say the raid at P*Town last weekend was an occupancy check — one they seemingly failed and which could put their liquor license in jeopardy. We're in the last stretch of the mayoral primary, and we're talking about the group chat supporting incumbent Ed Gainey, a union call to remove the mayor's COO for alleged anti-police bias, and criticism of Corey O'Connor for leaving a candidate forum early to attend a fundraiser. Plus, a famous Andy Warhol print seems to have ended up in Dutch trash, and there are a bunch of fun book events coming this weekend and beyond. PORTLAND'S RIVER VIEW Cemetery is the state's oldest nonprofit cemetery, founded in 1882 by three of Portland's most prominent citizens: Henry Corbett, Henry Failing, and William S. Ladd. All three of them are buried there — Ladd's grave in particular was the target of a bizarre raid by a gang of grave robbers 15 years later, but that's a story for another time. But the most visited grave at River View isn't one of them. It's not even the grave of an Oregonian. The name carved into the stone is Virgil W. Earp. (Portland, Multnomah County; 1880s, 1890s, 1900s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2401c-1009d_virgil-earp-090.631.html)
Kristen Becker is a standup comedian and activist based out of Provincetown, Massachusetts. Becker also has a long history of touring, living, and organizing in the Deep South. In 2006, she founded the "Dykes of Hazard," an all-lesbian comedy group that toured the Deep South for a decade. In 2014, Becker testified before the Louisiana State Legislature in support of the Louisiana Non-Discrimination Act. From there, she set out on a tour called "Loosen the Bible Belt" with pastor Jay Bakker. In 2017, she founded "Summer of Sass," a nonprofit that hooks queer teens up with a job and housing, and flies them out to Ptown for a summer on the gay beach. More recently, she crashed out at a fancy party and secured $3 million worth of funding for her program. You'll have to stick around til the end for that story! Filmmaker Marco Calvani talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about “High Tide” his feature film debut that stars Marco Pigossi (Lourenço) as a Brazilian undocumented immigrant adrift Provincetown in the late summer. The film is about a young man coping after a break up & left adrift in Ptown with his travel visa running out. Lourenço then meets Maurice a Black American & a romance evolves. Though Maurice's comes with a circle of friends he's is also quite aware he's the minority in a predominantly white queer tourist mecca. Pigossi gives a haunting performance steeped in melancholy & raw pain but delivers moments of openness, optimism & joy with an affective portrait of the depths LGBTQ men experience seeking meaningful connections. As the summer season fades & with his unexpected romance with Maurice together the two reconcile the pasts they've left behind & pursue their uncertain futures. The film distributed by Strand Releasing premiered at South by Southwest & was released in NYC earlier this month followed by an expansion to Los Angeles & will begin a run at Waters Edge Cinema in Provincetown & Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, MA on Friday November 1st. The stellar cast also includes James Bland as Maurice, Marisa Tomei as Miriam, Bill Irwin as Scott, Sean Mahon as Bob, Mya Taylor as Crystal, Bryan Batt as Todd, Todd Flaherty as Leslie, Karl Gregory as BJ & João Santos as Dimo with a haunting score by Sebastian Plano. Marco Calvani is an Italian playwright, director, filmmaker, translator & actor. Trained as an actor since he was a teenager Calvani made his debut as a playwright in 2002 with Quasi commissioned by the European Social Forum. Prior to his first feature film High Tide which had its world premiere at SXSW in March 2024 he wrote & directed the short film The View from Up Here starring Melissa Leo & Leïla Bekhti based on his eponymous play originally commissioned by The Actors Studio & directed by Estelle Parsons. As of 2020 Marco is in a relationship with Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi. LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES
It's a big week. We love you and hope you're taking care of yourself, whatever that may look like. Kris gives an update on her visit to P-Town for Women's Week and her plans for Friendsgiving. Tara talks ice queens and participating in The Lesbian Review's event. As always, we have a bunch of recommendations. We hope they give the distraction you need from the world outside. Official Recommendations From Kris: Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) This week, Kris caves to peer pressure in the best possible way to watch the film Portrait of a Lady on Fire. It's the story of a young painter who masquerades as a walking companion to capture a reluctant subject in her last days of freedom before marriage. The ending isn't happy, but it is, according to Kris, "satisfying," because this movie has a different take on love. From Tara: Most Wonderful by Georgia Clark This week, Tara recommends the holiday romance, Most Wonderful by Georgia Clark. It follows a trio of siblings as they find love (and themselves) when they head home for the holidays. One is a showrunner who has fallen for their star. Another is a complete disaster trying to… not disaster. And the third has recently discovered their lifelong friend is super hot. Tara loved it. Great vibes all around. Send us a textIn this episode, we delve into two of Massachusetts' most unnerving legends. First, Kenzie sets sail to uncover the mystery of the cursed carving on the ship Maritana. This intricately carved figurehead of a woman is said to have brought misfortune and tragedy to all who had the carving placed at the bow of their ship. When she was finally retired from the sea, she continued to bring misfortune to the buildings and structures where she was stored. Then, Lauren discusses the eerie tale of the Black Flash, a shadowy figure who terrorized Provincetown in the late 1930s. Please enjoy Part 3 - the final 80-minutes - of my 5-hour daytime set at the Crown & Anchor in Provincetown this year over 4th of July week. As I alluded to earlier in my Part 2 notes, this final section is a wild ride! I basically was just like, "f-ck it" and threw whatever I was feeling in the moment against the wall. (especially the last 25-minutes!!)... of course, this usually makes for the best moments. There are quite a few classics in here - "Charlie Brown" (Dave Audé's Coldplay remix), "Heartbreaker/If You Should Ever Be Lonely" (Junior's full 10+ minute anthem!), my own remixes of "Pink Pony Club" (Chappell Roan) and "Love Lift Me Up" (Debby Holiday), and (if you know me) my trademark homage to Hex Hector with his (full-length!) remix of Faith Hill's "Breathe."You'll either love these 80-minutes of music... or wonder "WTF was he thinking?!" ... either way, it's pure me.

In addition to my already-posted Boatslip tea dance set, I played a 5-hour daytime set at the Crown & Anchor in Provincetown this year, which I'm sharing in three parts. This set presented an opportunity to have a lot of fun and pull out some tracks I haven't used in a while. Please enjoy Part 1 - the warmup - a smorgasbord of disco, daytime house, and some fun throwbacks! Parts 2 & 3 will follow in the coming weeks!
Welcome to Part 2 of my tea dance set from the world-famous Boatslip in Provincetown over 4th of July week 2024. This is the peak half, just as the dance floor filled up and the party was in full swing. For my true house heads, the second half of this set (from Chappell Road onward) might not be your cup of tea (pun intended!)... but others will absolutely love it. It's a classic PTown tea dance experience, with a healthy dose of throwbacks. For me - and the dance floor - it was the moment. And yes, I did drop One Direction in this set... and it slayed. As always, I am so grateful to DJ Maryalice for inviting me to play yet another year in what I consider a religious summer experience. But wait… there's more! I recorded my 5-hour daytime set from the Crown & Anchor on July 5th, which I'll share in the coming weeks.

LGBTQ Filmmakers at the 26th annual Provincetown International Film Festival talk with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ in this exclusive audio montage that took place at the Boatslip Resort & Beach Club in Provincetown, MA. First we talked to director Stephen Soucy about his documentary “Merchant Ivory” that pulls back the curtain on the fascinating lives of filmmakers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory. Their unique partnership on and off the camera produced 43 groundbreaking films over 4 decades that left an indelible mark on the LGBTQ and arthouse cinema. The documentary features interviews with Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Helena Bonham Carter and many others who were lucky enough to move in the orbit of Merchant and Ivory's fabulous filmmaking. Next we chatted with director Fawzia Mirza and producer Andria Wilson Mirza about their feature film “The Queen of My Dreams”. The film is about a Pakistani Canadian woman who has had a strained relationship with her parents since coming out as lesbian and undergoes an emotional journey after the sudden unexpected death of her father. Her grief plunges her into a Bollywood-style examination of her family's past and present. Then we talked with director Taylor James, actor Kanoa Goo and producer Katie White about their short film “ILY, BYE” about when an unemployed, down on her luck woman (Megan Stalter) gets a life-changing job opportunity but she can't seem to get her foot out of her mouth long enough to get her foot in the door. Next we talked to Tyler C. Peterson about his short film “Stan Behavior” about a drag queen (Ginger Minj) embarking on a quest for better workplace rights but finds herself in a dicey situation when her new lawyer (Yvonne Zima) a tone-deaf straight woman is revealed to be a drag super stan. Then we talked with director Sarah McCarron and music producer Rascal Miles about their short film “The Bend” about a trans man migrating from Tennessee to Minneapolis who gets stranded in rural Wisconsin and encounters a fisherman. We then chatted with director Marco Calvani about his feature film “High Tide” that was shot in Provincetown about an undocumented Brazilian immigrant searching for purpose when he encounters Maurice creating a memorable tribute to love and loss. We concluded our conversation with veteran producer Christine Vachon who produced the 2023 Oscar nominated film “Past Lives” about what films she has coming down the pike. We also talked with all the filmmakers about their spin on our LGBTQ issues as we approach the crucial 2024 presidential election. The Provincetown Film Society, Inc. The history of Portland mayors in the 20th century largely comes down to the story of the struggle of progressive reformers against various forms of corruption and vice. Put that way, it sounds like a clean morality play: good vs. evil. But it's a bit more complicated than that. (Portland, Multnomah County; 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1911d.portland-mayors-part3of3.html)

The hordes of awestruck visitors who admired the scenery at the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition would have been shocked if they'd known the beautiful little lake would be gone in 20 years — filled in for industrial lands. Not a trace remains. (Portland, Multnomah County; 1900s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1210d-guilds-lake-portlands-water-wonderland.html)
“Ethelbert” the orca somehow ended up stranded miles from the ocean in the Columbia Slough, much to the delight of most Portland residents. But it wasn't long before the city's would-be Nimrods came out and spoiled everything. There is no other sport that has evolved over the last 30 years the way that MMA has.In my personal opinion, the biggest evolutions have come in the last 5-10 of those years. It's an incredible rarity to have the opportunity to chat with someone who is still active, winning, and fighting like he's never missed a step after 20 years of time in the sport.Sean "P-Town" Wilson is that person. Based out of Omaha, NE Sean has fought for many promotions- including BKFC, and will be back in the octagon this Friday at Dynasty Combat Sports "New Years Knockouts" in Omaha, NE.
