In this episode, I sat down with Mike Luraschi, VP of Safety and Risk Management at TEI Group, to talk about safety in the elevator industry: how it's evolved over the years, why complacency creates the biggest risks, safety resources for small companies, and why mental health support is essential for making sure everyone gets home safely.Chapters:00:00 Intro01:07 Getting into the Elevator Industry03:23 The Importance of Safety in the Elevator Industry05:15 Transitioning to Safety Leadership06:38 Individual Responsibility for Safety09:19 Unique Challenges of Safety in the Elevator Industry12:06 Level of Acceptable Risk17:34 Complacency and its Dangers24:43 Building a Safety Culture28:00 Safety Resources for Smaller Companies30:45 Mental Health & Safety in the Workforce36:21 Final Thoughts on Safety and CommunityResources:Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/@elevatorcareers/Submit a Topic Idea for the Podcast: https://elevatorcareers.net/Connect With Us: linktr.ee/AllredGroupA Message from our Sponsor: Looking for top-tier talent to join your team? Karyn Parsons — yes, the Hilary Banks from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air — joins us to talk about her powerful historical fiction for young readers, her nonprofit Sweet Blackberry, and why books like hers matter more in 2026 than ever.In this episode, we dig into Blue Beach, a YA murder mystery set on a segregated Black beach in 1929 that is equal parts page-turning thriller and gut-punch history lesson. We also talk about Clouds Over California, Karyn's middle grade novel set in the 1970s that reframes the story of the Black Panthers. Whether you're a longtime reader of YA or someone who thinks "that's not for me" — this conversation will change your mind. Adults: these books are absolutely for you.Plus: Karyn shares what she's been reading lately, including a deeply unsettling thriller about smell, murder, and obsession, a darkly funny book that involves... cannibalism (?!), and why Kindred by Octavia Butler is a required read for every human.

Most people think of romantic music as background noise for dates, movies, or weddings. But researchers have found that music can actually influence romantic behavior and attraction in measurable ways. Listen to discover how love songs may be doing more than simply setting the mood. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/06/100618112139.htm Take a look around you and notice how many buttons surround you. Elevator buttons. Crosswalk buttons. Remote controls. Keyboards. Car dashboards. Humans push buttons all day long—and often repeatedly, even when pushing again does absolutely nothing. There's something deeply satisfying and psychologically powerful about pressing a button and getting an immediate response. But buttons are a surprisingly recent invention, and they fundamentally changed how humans interact with machines, technology, and even each other. Rachel Plotnick, associate professor of Cinema and Media Studies at Indiana University, explores the strange history and psychology of buttons, why people are so drawn to them, and how “push-button culture” transformed modern life. She is author of Power Button: A History of Pleasure, Panic, and the Politics of Pushing (https://amzn.to/3xvIj5j). Humans don't just enjoy games—we seem to need them. From sports and gambling to video games, puzzles, and board games, people everywhere devote enormous amounts of time and energy to play. But games may be doing far more than entertaining us. Neuroscientist and physicist Kelly Clancy explains how games shape human behavior, influence culture, teach strategy, reward risk-taking, and even help societies evolve. In our conversation, she reveals why games are woven so deeply into human nature and why understanding games may help explain the way humans learn, compete, cooperate, and make decisions. Kelly is author of Playing with Reality: How Games Have Shaped Our World (https://amzn.to/3W02BNR). Online product reviews have become incredibly influential. Producer Dan Cook had an elevator experience on the way into work. Shouldn't there just be a societal understanding that we let people get OFF the elevator before we try to get ON the elevator?! What's the societal understanding you think people screw up?
Comic Sans often signals levity or sarcasm. The font is occasionally used for a key phrase in some official city elevator inspection certificates. That's caused concern for some Chicagoans, including at least two Curious City listeners.

What if a childhood wound is still shaping the way you connect, ask for help, and move through life? In this episode, Michael and Sandy interpret Maggie's dream, "Being Chosen to Go to the Special Location." The dream begins with a powerful setup: Maggie has been chosen to go somewhere exclusive, special, and far away. It should create a feeling of being included, supported, and part of something meaningful. But that is not what happens. Instead, the dream reveals a painful emotional pattern: feeling disconnected from the group, feeling like others have an advantage, not asking direct questions, over-respecting boundaries, pulling inward, and feeling responsible even when nothing is her fault. As Michael breaks down the symbols — the funeral, Christmas, the hotel, the elevators, the bellhop, the little girl in the stroller, and the missing parents — the dream reveals the core wound: a young inner child who felt left alone. This episode shows how dreams identify the original wound behind lifelong patterns. It also shows why healing those wounds can completely change your default state — from isolation and self-protection to feeling included, supported, and chosen. If you have ever felt like you are on the outside looking in, this episode will help you understand why that pattern may exist — and how your dreams are already trying to help you heal it. Episode 422 is the debut of Decoded by Identity at the Center, a new sub-series hosted by Jeff Steadman and Sean O'Dell dedicated to unpacking the specifications and standards powering IAM. Joining them is Pieter Kasselman, VP of Open Standards at Defakto and chair of the WIMSE working group. The conversation covers why traditional non-human identity approaches break at agentic scale, how SPIFFE and SPIRE enable short-lived automated credential provisioning without long-lived secrets, and why treating agents as workloads unlocks a decade of existing standards. Pieter walks through critical OAuth specs including JWT authorization grant, token exchange, client ID metadata, and the emerging transaction tokens draft. Sean connects these to practical gateway architecture, continuous access evaluation, and policy-based authorization. Brad is back with three absolutely unhinged real-life stories that prove we don't have a people problem—we have a decision-making problem. No filters, no script—just raw reactions to people doing things that make you question everything.Story one features a “marathon runner” who decides halfway through that running is overrated… and just hops on the subway before jumping back in like nothing happened. Brad breaks it down as the laziest cheat code of all time—less Rocky, more public transit enthusiast.Story two takes a dark turn with a guy stuck in an elevator who makes a series of life-altering decisions… specifically turning the elevator into a full-blown crime scene. Brad leans into the aftermath, pointing out that survival isn't the issue—it's having to live with yourself (and your coworkers) after. Then there's the “banana bandit,” a man who tries to outsmart self-checkout by ringing up hundreds of dollars of items as bananas. What follows is a masterclass in confidence without intelligence, as Brad imagines the scanner basically begging this guy to stop.Throughout the episode, Brad delivers his signature “two types of people” breakdowns, calling out the chaos, the logic gaps, and the unbelievable confidence behind each decision. The result is a hilarious, slightly concerning look at how real people handle real situations… very badly.Bottom line: If your day feels messy, at least you didn't fake a marathon, destroy an elevator, or try to financially survive on bananas.
Festive Friday is back with some classic elevator entrapment! ABOUT STUCK ON CHRISTMAS The competition for a major promotion is heating up between Synclaire and James, two ambitious rivals whose professional antagonism has spilled over into playful (and not-so-playful) pranks. But when a sudden malfunction leaves them both stranded in the company elevator on Christmas Eve, their race for the top becomes a desperate struggle for freedom. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR STUCK ON CHRISTMAS November 4, 2025 | CW CAST & CREW OF STUCK ON CHRISTMAS Director: Johnnard Harper Cast: April Dillard as Synclaire Antrone Harris as James BRAN'S MOVIE SYNOPSIS This dude is out to dinner with his girlfriend and he proposes. She says no. We then get a really long intro of James and Sinclair waking up in the morning. He is in a very good mood. Today is the big day at work. He's getting that promotion baby! Sinclair shows up late for work, like always. But she also really wants that promotion. Their boss comes in. She brings everyone in who is up for the promotion and tells them who the top two are. It's James and Sinclair. She calls them both into her office and tells them it's crunch time. Whoever is most likable at the Christmas party will get that promotion. They make a wager that whoever loses has to be the other person's assistant. This leads to prank time such as putting sticky notes on the bottom of him and his best friend's mugs that makes it look like they're in love, spiking their tacos with laxatives. But they get them back with...FART SPRAY!!! They all go home to clean up and Sinclair realizes that she still needs to shop for her secret Santa who is...uh oh, JAMES! The party happens. It's a good time. James goes to leave and ends up getting on the elevator at the same time as Sinclair. And the elevator ends up getting stuck! They end up getting mutually turned on by each other when they have to take off their jackets & sweaters because it's hot. They drink, they play games, and they end up kissssingggggg. They end up getting out I think and they have, let's say romantic dreams, about each other. But uh oh there's a knock on her door and... it's her ex! AHHHH! The next day or so at work, she gets the promotion but he's not mad. Cut to the beginning of the movie with the proposal again. It's James proposing to Sinclair. She says no. Then she says I'm just kidding and says yes. Watch the show on Youtube - www.deckthehallmark.com/youtubeInterested in advertising on the show?
