Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:44  Hello, Be It babe. Happy Friday. Happy Fuck Yeah Friday and Happy Halloween. Happy Halloween. I don't, I do not decorate for Halloween. I actually, I don't like to be scared, but I have to say that I really am some, like, somewhat excited about this holiday, mostly because I just, over the last year, I feel like I've learned a bit more about the holidays. And, like, what I was told was, like, paganism and like weird, like, witchy stuff. And, you know, because I grew up in religion, and now I can look at this holiday and go, I love all the witches. Yeah, I love them all. They were like the all knowing women. Often they were fucking doulas. And I just love it. I really wish this holiday had been, like, kept alive from the history of it in a different way. But, you know, it's good. So we celebrate things that are on our hearts and our minds. Wins of yours you send in, a win of mine and an affirmation. Lesley Logan 1:42  So this is really cool. I saw this online. 58-year-old Donna Jean Wilde set the Guinness World Record for the longest abdominal plank held by a woman. Okay, so this is insane. 58, when they're telling us, oh, women after 40, good luck building muscle. Blah, blah, blah. Well, 58-year-old Donna Jean Wilde from Alberta, set a Guinness World Record in March 2024 for the longest plank held by a woman holding it for, ready, four hours, 30 minutes and 11 seconds. She also holds the record for the most push ups in one hour by a woman, 1,575, I don't even know why we need to know, like, have these records, like, I'm actually not sure that it's even like necessary, but I love that she did this, and I love that she's 58 and I love that she's a grandmother, and I love that she's, is she a grandmother? At least she, they said, did I read that wrong? Anyways, I freaking, maybe she's not, but she's still a kick ass woman, whether or not, she is in my book. I also like, look at some of these things and just go, how do they have the time to practice? How would you even know you could hold it for four hours? Like, I don't know what else you're doing in the day to get her things going on. But I fucking love this for you. And I love, oh no, she has a grandchild. In fact, she has 12 grandchildren. I didn't think I made that up. Okay, there we go. I'm like, my memory is pretty good. Anyways, I'm impressed by that. I just think, like, this is proof that we can be it till you see with anything we want, anything we want, you don't you don't just, like, show up one day and do a four hour plank. I don't even know if I can be with myself for four hours. You know, that's a long time, but she fucking did. So anyways, you can do whatever you want. I'm not saying you can do that too, because I don't know that you need to, but I I'm happy for her, and I'm happy to share with you that you can build muscle and kick ass at 58 years old or older. Lesley Logan 3:32  Here we go. We have an amazing win from Kelly Nyhan. We love her and love her from Chicago. We've experienced her. We got to see her a lot in different places in the world. I love when we get to see what's going on in the wins of people's lives. She has listened to this podcast for years. So her FYF is okay, I'm feeling really great about my practice and teaching these days, and I've had to really pat myself on the back, LL and Brad and my fellow eLevators on the fact that I am keeping some type of practice in my day and week, increasing my movement what feels good in my body for right now, and diving deeper into the exercises with the flash cards, which are a game changer. Complement with YouTube videos I signed up for OPC and committed to watching and doing each video. I feel good about watching the video sometimes at 2.0 speed before I do the class. That feels good to me right now, but maybe in the future, I'll just go for it. A couple more fyfs. I signed up for a day at Balanced Body Chicago's Pilates On Tour, purchased a Contrology Wunda Chair to pick up, signed up for LL's mat class at a local studio, Rachel from eLevate, and, of course, the happy hour, oh, and I helped facilitate LL's current eLevate group for part of chairs weekend, chairs, oh, I want to master you. And sorry this is long, but I have a loose system for really showing up for the things I want to keep me connected to my Agency eLevate and OPC community. Feeling great and more connected in every which way. And it shows in my teaching. I'm getting more confident every day. Woohoo. Kelly, there's a lot of wins in there, babe, which I, you know I love. I love that you're giving yourself permission, like you're like, okay, I need to watch the class first. Like, we all have different learning styles. And instead of us, like, going, oh, I, like, I have ADHD, and I have to catch myself like, sometimes I say it like, I was like, like, I'm annoyed by it, right? Instead, it's like, well, I have this, and so because I have this, I do this, and I'm going to celebrate that. So I'm celebrating you, Kelly, that you are like, you know what? Right now, I need to watch the class at 2x speed so that I can see what's going on, so that when I do the class, I know what I'm modifying so you can honor your body. I love that. That's so great for you. And like all the different things you're doing, to be in community and to make sure that you get to prioritize that that's huge. It's not easy to do, so, it's not easy to make time for other people all the time, and you're doing a great job. So thank you for sending your win in. Kelly, who's next, who's gonna send their win in? Lesley Logan 5:46  A win of mine. So this win is a little long time in sharing, because I've had other things I want to celebrate with you, but I wanted to still celebrate this with you. This is my year of, like, pivot, which, like, who knew we would all thought that would've been 2020 and I'd be, like, gone and done with it, but I actually don't think so. I think 2020 was, like, the transformation year that I planned it to be, and it just looked a little differently, and everyone else was pivoting. This has been the pivot year. So we had to pivot in the summertime with the Canada thing to virtual. And then literally, 10 days later, we had something going with our AC. We had a bunch of people the house for an eLevate workshop. We had a pivot to another place, made a pivot back I should have done another pivot that I've had to do. And I just want to say, like, I'm pretty freaking proud and celebrating that, like I actually have practice what can I do so freaking much that I can just pivot in minutes on any massive project, and it can include many people, and I find a way to make the actual thing that I wanted to happen, and then I'm able to execute on it, and I can feel so good at the end of the day going even though I'm tired, even though whoa, I planned for X and I ended up doing y. Why did I have to plan for X for so many months to only do Y in so many minutes? But I'm celebrating that, because I think a lot of times, we would just focus on all the shit that went wrong, and I got, I by being like, celebrating that I was able to pivot like, to celebrate all the things that we got right and we got to do and the experience and the community that we had because of it. And I'm just so proud. And so anyways, there's probably a skill set you have that other people don't, that you probably don't even realize it's a skill set. And I'm telling you, it's time to celebrate that you did those things, that you're doing those things, because it's really easy to take our strengths for granted and not just take a moment to celebrate. Oh my God, fucking great at that, right? Fucking great at that. All right, anyways, pivot queen over here, who hopes that next year is a different kind of year. Lesley Logan 7:39  All right. But she is so fantastic about the part where we're all figuring it out, and being aware that we're all figuring it out. And that's what all of her books are about. Catherine Newman, welcome to the Hashtag AmWriting Podcast, where you've been at least once, maybe twice—I need to go and look. It's so fun to have you back. I remember us walking in the woods before you had finished We All Want Impossible Things in 2021.Catherine NewmanI remember it too.KJ Dell'AntoniaWhich, actually, for three books, is not that long ago.Catherine NewmanHey, that's true. I know... I remember your dog.KJ Dell'AntoniaHe's here somewhere.Catherine NewmanYou had a young dog with you. It was the best. And you—you said so many things that I've thought about so much on that walk. But I don't want to derail the thing you want to talk about.KJ Dell'AntoniaBut, but same—it was a great walk. We must do it again. All right, meanwhile—okay, so I already described in the introduction all the things you've ever written in the past and raved about you, so don't—don't worry about that. You've been—sorry you don't get to hear the petting. But the question is, tell us—tell us a little bit about Wreck.Catherine NewmanYeah, so Wreck...KJ Dell'AntoniaI know, I know, it's painful. Elevator pitch or whatever you want to say, because seriously, I did just tell everyone about them in the intro.Catherine NewmanI really need an elevator pitch. I feel like We All Want Impossible Things was like a woman whose best friend was dying while she, like, slept with everybody.KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah, it was joyful.Catherine NewmanThat was easy.KJ Dell'AntoniaAlso sad.Catherine NewmanSandwich was like Cape Cod for a week, reproductive mayhem, sandwich generation. Wreck is so weird because there's these two sort of very slight plot elements. So it's, you know, a woman in her mid-50s living in a house with her husband of many years, her daughter, who's between college and grad school, and her dad, who was fairly recently widowed and in his 90s. And that's mostly what the book is, but the little plots are that she has a rash—she notices that she has a rash—and it inaugurates this kind of diagnostic tornado. A slow and quiet tornado, but a tornado nonetheless, where she has to see a billion doctors. She has to constantly check her patient portal to see if she's dying or not, and anyone who's had—who's been anything but healthy in the last 10 years will understand the patient portal.KJ Dell'AntoniaYes, I love the checker. I checked a patient portal from a hockey-rink parking lot, and that's a mistake, just FYI.Catherine NewmanJust don't...KJ Dell'AntoniaTo anyone considering it, don't do it on a Friday night. Don't do that.Catherine NewmanJust don't even look. And then the other plot point is that there's an accident—there's a collision between a car and a train—and a schoolmate of her kids, like someone they went to high school with, is killed in this accident. And she becomes kind of weirdly obsessed with the accident. She looks at it online all the time. She stalks everyone's...KJ Dell'AntoniaWhich so tracks for the character that you have created.Catherine NewmanDoesn't it? And that's it. And so the book sort of is those things unfolding in this parallel way—these uncertain things.KJ Dell'AntoniaSo when you wrote it, what—what was your intention for this? What did you want Wreck to be in your career and for your readers?Catherine NewmanWhat? It's so funny to be asked questions about my career. I don't know what I wanted it to be in my career, but maybe while I'm talking to you, I'll figure that out.KJ Dell'AntoniaOkay.Catherine NewmanOr you can tell me. But for my readers—I do think we're in this funny place where some of us are hungry to read about the experiences of other menopausal women who are taking care of aging parents, whose nests are emptying, who are in long marriages, who are, you know, doing the things of this age, including tracking weird illnesses. So I guess that—you know, I think, I feel like the thing that I love about writing—one of the things—is when people say to me, like, “Oh yeah, I feel the same way about that,” or they write me and they're like, “Oh, I read this, and I felt so relieved that I wasn't alone.” And I guess I have a lot of that hope—you know, that it speaks to someone, or someone's been in their portal rummaging around and finding out horrible things about their health and Googling them. Like, that's not a small part of the population who's probably doing that. So I guess just that—you know, the handout, the “I'm with you on this” vibe.KJ Dell'AntoniaSo what do you love most about it?Catherine Newman(Laughing) I mean, that's a funny and embarrassing question. I... you know, the father character is based very closely on my own father. Many of the things he says are verbatim lifted from conversations and texts with my dad. And I just love that character so much. I think he's so funny and has this kind of deep wisdom. I mean, Wreck plays him for laughs a little bit, but he offers so much to her. He's still this really profound caretaking force in her life, even though he himself, you know, is failing in different ways. So I guess that's what I like.KJ Dell'AntoniaHow does your dad feel about you taking his stuff?Catherine NewmanHe loved this book.KJ Dell'AntoniaI love this!Catherine NewmanHe has not felt that way always about the way I represent him. I represent him in Sandwich in similar ways, and Sandwich—there were just particular things that bugged him. He loved the book overall but didn't love his character. I think in this book, maybe because there's so much of his character, that it gets to be a very well-rounded kind of person, and also somebody whose opinion it's obvious the other characters respect. So he really loved it, which was, like, everything to me, you know?KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah, oh, wow. I'd give a lot for that. That's—that's wonderful. I would—it's... although all my dad ever says is, “Why don't you—you only write about mothers? You never write...” I'm like, well, I don't know if you read some of the mothers. You're kind of lucky. You're doing okay. I don't know why—you guys were great. You should have been better fodder for affection, and then I would... yeah. All right. So, okay, so that's what you love about it. What was the hardest about this?Catherine NewmanIt's funny—it's a little hard to talk about without spoilers, but, um, there's a difficult part of the plot that involves Rocky's son, who works for a consulting firm in New York, where she really questions his values, questions the decision to do that kind of work.KJ Dell'AntoniaThat would stun me, frankly.Catherine NewmanHowever, he knows a lot about that kind of work, and talked to me a ton about it for the book—like, went on a million walks with me and let me pick his brain about it. And I really just found it so hard to write about this kind of painful conflict between Rocky and her son. I just found it really hard. Yeah...KJ Dell'AntoniaObviously, yeah, that's actually what you did, wasn't it?Catherine NewmanI can imagine... that's it. I imagined it. And honestly, my husband could hardly stand to read it. He found it so devastating. Just—and it's, as you know, it's not massive conflict. It's like...KJ Dell'AntoniaBut it is. It's...Catherine NewmanBut it is. YepKJ Dell'AntoniaI mean, it's, you know—Catherine NewmanYep.KJ Dell'AntoniaIt's it—goes back to Alex Keaton, right? [Unintelligible] Both of us, yeah, yeah, no, I get it. It's a really—and by writing it, even if it's not autobiographical, which it's not, it's fiction, you are saying something about some compatriots, you know, some other—you're really, you're—you're putting—you're putting a stake in the ground, which I think has always been pretty obvious for anyone who knows you or has read you, but maybe you had not verbalized even in a fictional form.Catherine NewmanHmm, maybe.KJ Dell'AntoniaCould feel judgmental because—it's judgmental (whispered). But it's values. That's what values do. A value that doesn't judge anyone isn't a value, even if you don't want to judge people. But I think it's kind of true, like...Catherine NewmanYeah, yeah.KJ Dell'AntoniaYou can also be open. But, I mean, that's—I don't know if, if you don't offer that up, then we're all just sitting here going, “Oh, it's fine. It's all...”Catherine NewmanEverything's fine.KJ Dell'AntoniaEverything's fine, it's fine. That's a joke in our house, because we had this Spanish exchange student, and he would always say, “Oh, it's fine,” when—and it—what that meant was, it wasn't.Catherine NewmanOh no, it wasn't fine.KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah, no... that's what it means when we say, “It's fine.”Catherine NewmanOh my God, KJ.KJ Dell'AntoniaAll right, so this kind of gets to, I think, my next question, which—which is, what about this was, um, bigger for you? Was a bigger leap to take in your writing?Catherine NewmanIt's like, you know, I think it's just a little more plot in a novel than I've ever managed. Even though, you know—don't laugh because there's not a ton of plot. But nonetheless, there were sort of these two vectors of significant—I thought—dramatic contention that I had to manage in the writing, and—and I was anxious about it. Like, I—I like a quiet story that's not like—is too plot-driven. But anyway, so that is—it was, you know, I definitely plotted it a little more actively before I wrote it, like I wanted to make sure that these plots were unfolding in the timeframe I wanted them to unfold in.KJ Dell'AntoniaAnd did that present some new, like, “Oops, I did this too fast, oops...” just that you hadn't really had to...?Catherine NewmanNo, because I plotted it. It actually didn't, but it just presented—before I started writing, I had the challenge of, you know, practically trying to graph these two plots to see where they would intersect, and—and the sort of ways that the two plots together create this kind of character arc for Rocky, the main character. And so I was—I just, like—I usually, I have this way that I plot stuff, and it's kind of based on that book that I use because of you, which is like, you know, Put On Your Pants—or Take Off Your Pants, or, you know, the book...KJ Dell'AntoniaOh yeah, oh yeah.Catherine NewmanAnd—and I, so I do this thing where I make a—I write down the numbers 1 to 25, and I print that. I print a piece of paper that has the numbers 1 through 25 in type font. I don't know why I don't just hand-write the whole thing. That—and I guess the thought's how many chapters it's going to be, but it's never quite right. And then I fill in what I know. So I put in everything I know, and guess where it's going to go in terms of the—what are the things? What's it called when it's like a thing...?KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah, the... the turning point or the...Catherine NewmanOr the beat...KJ Dell'AntoniaOr the moment of last resolve? Yeah, the beat!Catherine NewmanYeah.KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah.Catherine NewmanSo I fill in everything, like, I know, you know. I have a sense of how it's going to open. I have a sense of the different elements of the two plots, and I put them in this weird numbered-chapter thing. And usually—like, usually as if I've written so many books—but with the other two novels, I did that a little willy-nilly, and it was fine. Like, I sat down and wrote the books beginning to end without all of it totally sorted in terms of where everything would go, and that was fine. This book, I really had to understand where it was all going to go, so I had to just be sure that all of the most important plot points were plotted in that 1-through-25.KJ Dell'AntoniaDo you? I mean, you have a lot of moving emotional pieces too. Asking for a friend—how do you make sure that those are all resolved? Or do you? Or does it just happen?Catherine NewmanThat's a really good question. I hope they're resolved, or if they're not, that that's intentional, by the way. Yeah, I—I'm just thinking about, like, the different relationships. You know, most of what the book is, is like Rocky's relationships with the people she loves—like, that is sort of the heart of the book. And then her grappling with herself, both physically and psychologically. I think I have a sense of those. Those are kind of included in those. I have, like, a—in that 1-through-25— sorry if this is too granular.KJ Dell'AntoniaNo, I love it.Catherine NewmanIn the 1-through-25, I have the plot thing that's like, “Rocky reads her biopsy results,” or, you know, whatever the thing is. And then I have this other column that's like, the other things that need to happen in that chapter, if that's what's happening in the chapter. And that's where I keep information about stuff that's like, “Willa forgives her,” you know—whatever other thing needs to happen. So I sort of track the plot, and then I—and I also have a little other column that's just like, seasonal details. And that I don't fill out super carefully, but, like, because this book moves from essentially Labor Day to New Year's, I—I just tracked a little before I started writing, like, around when in that season things were going to be happening, you know, that's Halloween, it's Thanksgiving, it's the winter holidays, New Year's, and then it's going to be, like, the leaves are turning, the blackberries that, you know?KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah, no, it's so hard. Is it Tuesday? Like...?Catherine NewmanYeah (laughing).KJ Dell'AntoniaDang it. Oh, wait—if its four days from the first day, and the first day was a Thursday, that means its Sunday, and Sundays do have a particular rhythm on their own. And yeah, no, it's so hard.Catherine NewmanIt's really hard, although that part's my favorite part, probably—besides, I love dialogue. But I love—I keep a lot of notes that are really dull on their own about, like, the weather and the landscape, just in general. I don't even know what I'm going to use them for. I just keep a ton of notes about the seasons. And I love pilfering stuff for fiction from them because it's just like—it's going to be fairly accurate. Like, I will have dated it. I'll have a fairly strong sense of whether that will work or not.KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah, you're not going to put the blackberries in April.Catherine NewmanAnd I'm not going to put the blackberries in April, and I have that cheater feeling of chunking in something I've already kind of written down, and then your word count goes up by, like, 300 words.KJ Dell'AntoniaYou're like, hey... [Unintelligible].Catherine NewmanYeah, exactly.KJ Dell'AntoniaOh my gosh, I love this. All right, well, one last question, and that is—what have you read recently where you felt like the writer was really, you know, playing big, doing their very max?Catherine NewmanYeah, I just read—well, I just got it in the mail, although my kitten—I want to show you, she has, like...KJ Dell'AntoniaShe had some fun with it...Catherine NewmanChewed up every corner.KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah.Catherine NewmanSo this book is A Truce That Is Not Peace by Miriam Toews. And she is a very, very favorite writer of mine. She wrote the novel All My Puny Sorrows that I always press on everybody, because it's like the perfect funny, sad novel. This book I got to blurb, so I read it a while ago, and it just came—and I think it just came out maybe this week, I'm not sure. It's so incredibly good. It's really strange—someone—she's doing some conference in Mexico, and she has to write an answer to the question, “Why do I write?”KJ Dell'AntoniaOkay.Catherine NewmanAnd she keeps starting and stopping, and it's so—it's nonfiction. I mean, it's just authentically this, and she includes, like, letters to her sister. Her sister killed herself some number of years ago, and that's the event that All My Puny Sorrows—which is a novel—is based on. But this, I am under the impression that's the first time she's written about it...KJ Dell'AntoniaIn a nonfiction way—yeah.Catherine NewmanIn a nonfiction way. And it is just—I did that thing, you know, when a book is so good? I picked it up because I knew I was going to talk to you about it, and then I read it for, like, an hour.KJ Dell'AntoniaYeah, no, I get it.Catherine NewmanEven though I have, like, already read it. It's so moving and beautiful and so—like, she's just struggling in this, like, really profound way to process loss and to understand herself and what she's created in the world. And it's so good.KJ Dell'AntoniaIt sounds huge, and I would—yeah, I'm going to pick it up. I have a funny story about All My Puny Sorrows, which is that I took it to Spain while I was waiting for one of those patient-portal things. I had cancer at the time, and that's—the character of the sister who wanted to kill herself made me so angry that I had to hide—not only did I have to leave the book behind, I had to hide it in the hotel so it would not juju me. I obviously survived, because this was, I think, seven or eight years ago. But I couldn't—like, I just—it was... but that actually speaks to the power of the book.Catherine NewmanInteresting... yeah.KJ Dell'AntoniaIt's not that it wasn't an amazing book. It was that I literally couldn't handle the particular, you know, mental illness that the sister was struggling with when I, you know, did not really want to die. Did not want to die, yeah. So I...Catherine NewmanThat's amazing... yeah.KJ Dell'AntoniaShe's a really powerful writer.Catherine NewmanThat—that is a really powerful story. Wait, were you going to share with me a book? Let's get started.Lesley Logan 0:44  All right, Be It babe. I have a fun inspo, a fun affirmation. It's a fun episode. So welcome to the FYFs. It's a Fuck Yeah Friday. It's kind of like, fuck yeah, I did that, right? I did that. So I am, I'm home. Cambodia. This it's happened and Singapore, but obviously I recorded these beforehand. However, I'm really excited about it. I'm really excited. So here we go. This is the inspiration I saw online, and this is just what I want to share with you all, because I like giving information for you that can support you in your life. So there's this guy on Instagram. It says this guy's a modern day hero, helping people to feel safe while using ride hailing apps and taxis. So his handle is _joshuasummerfield, and he to him, he's been he's an actor, I guess, and he usually plays, like, the protector role. And so he basically created these reels where you could download the audio, and he, he basically, like, he's like, okay, download this audio, and then just turn your phone, like, loud. And so it goes, hey baby, what's up, right? And he has this, like, voice of, like, just like, sounds like a big dude. And then you can go, oh yeah, I'm on my way home. And then he has a script, right? So you just have to pause and he'll talk. And that way your ride share person knows that you have some big, scary person waiting for you. So no matter what, whom you love in this world, or whom you're going home to, you might need this audio. And to be honest, as a female who's been in ride sharing apps, I have been of the course, majority of the rides have felt very safe and very fine and honestly unmemorable, which is what you want. But there have the three times that I have been scared. I was, like, actually scared. And while nothing bad happened to me, bad things have happened. And there's tons of statistics that are out there. And yes, there's apps now, and there's ride sharing apps, including in Vegas, where I live, but probably where you live, where there's driverless cars, which is like, yes please. And then there's also, like, where we live, there's like a woman's only chauffeur, like women only driving, and I love that. But just in case you find yourself not able to use those things, I would definitely hit up his account. I would account. I would definitely do on those audios and save them, because it has been really helpful. You know, I've had it like Brad was traveling once, and this guy had picked me up, right? And he was really gruff about it, and just sent my, like, hackles up, and I was, excuse me, I have to just call my husband, let him know I'm coming home. And I just sent him a voice text. I didn't actually, like, because, like, he was in camp. He was not in the country, so he was not gonna answer his phone while he's sleeping, anyways. And I, of course, was like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, drop me off over here and drop me off at my neighbor's house. And I, like, walk, like I was walking up towards their house and, like, behind the van, you know, because, like, sometimes, like, what is going on? Like, this person gives me the creeps. So this guy's voice would have really saved things for me. So anyways, go check that out. We have the link in the show notes for you. And Ijust like, when people do cool things to help other people out, he gets paid nothing for that, which is awesome. And I think what a win for that guy. Just to, like, help everyone out they could have wins in their day. Lesley Logan 3:57  Okay, so now a win of yours. Let's see it. We have Christine Ivy. She's an eLevator. She just graduated. I have been reading the Contrology handbook, and it is so good, it is getting me even more excited, as if that was even possible to work with all my new classical equipment that is arriving this week, Contrology Reformer, Armchair, classical springs for my Cadillac and for my upcoming happy hours in my studio, I am absolutely thrilled for what is to come as I become more aware and more aligned with teaching and practicing the method as it was originally designed. So I love this because, like, I think, I don't think we all spend enough time celebrating, like the learning we're doing, the being in the process of learning what we're doing. You know, sometimes we're like, oh, I won't celebrate until I've learned it. You know, until I am done, I can't celebrate it. But she is like, like, celebrating what she is, in fact, studying right now. And it's so, so cool. And so my loves, you are probably in the middle of something. Maybe you can celebrate when you did something like, when you read one chapter, right? Oh, I read that one chapter. Or oh, I'm finally able to pronounce that word in this language I'm learning correctly. You know, those are wins that you're not giving yourself credit for. And I love a gratitude, and we're coming up in gratitude season. But like, my goodness, we can be celebrating like, oh, that happened today. You know that one thing happened today, and take some note for it, because things that stand out are the things that like suck, but if you're focusing on the things that like, whoa, I can't believe like, not only did I get that email off that's been on my heart and I was struggling to write it, but I also got some laundry done. I got two hard things done one day. Win, right? All right. So just trying to give you some ideas on all the things you can celebrate in your life. Lesley Logan 5:32  Okay, my turn to celebrate. So I have another bucket list to check off. So Brad showed me the Botanical Gardens in Singapore years ago. I don't even think we'd actually even been to a Singapore Airport when he showed me this, like, I think he's on a movie or a short or something like that. Just look like this world of craziness. And we just kept saying, someday we'll be able to go to Singapore and do it. And we fly through Singapore a lot, but our layovers are rarely able to to go do anything, and the last couple of times, they were overnight and we could have dinner, but we couldn't do the gardens and dinner and sleep and get to the airport on time and all that stuff. But as I mentioned last time, we had this long layover, and we were able to check off a bucket list and go to the Botanical Gardens. And I have seen them, and I just like, I feel like I'm a constantly a girl, just like seeking out like FernGully. I just want to live in FernGully, you know, but without the hexes. And if you don't know what I just said, then you have not seen one of the greatest cartoon movies ever. And it's Robin Williams playing Baddie, and it is just wonderful. And I might just watch it now that I've, like reminded myself how cool it was. I hope it's as good as a child, but anyways, I really hope it ages well. But I just there's something about being in these gardens and seeing plants from all over that you would never get to see. It just feels like a wonder of this world. And so if you have a bucket list and you haven't like looked at it recently, go ahead and give it a look, right? You might find an opportunity to get to check one of those things off, and it feels really, really cool. Have I seen anything else in Singapore? No, not really, but that, yes, I have. So good, celebrate. Oh, what a win. What a win. Because when you start practicing, seeking out what is possible, it's pretty easy to find out more possibilities on those things. Lesley Logan 7:23  All right, I have a really funny affirmation. So this I came across, and I'm pretty sure the person thought that they were like nagging this part, like this thing about LA., but I actually thought of it as a great affirmation. So what the post says is, nothing will prepare you for L.A., small talk. I asked someone today what they do, and they said, I'm in between blessings right now. And so I feel like this person is, like, trying to get like, a shock out of people, because, like, L.A., people do say some interesting things, like, I'm in between blessings right now. But what an awesome affirmation or mantra if you are in that space, like, if you are going through something, you're feeling really stuck, this is for you. So I think we should just co-opt this, because it's great. And there's some weird things. L.A. people say, as someone who's been in L.A., I will happily, yes, there are, but I'll die on that hill that, like some of them, aren't actually wonderful, positive ways of thinking about your life. So, ready? I'm in between blessings right now. Doesn't that sound good? I'm in between blessings right now. This episode was recorded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, during the 2025 Tri-State Dairy Conference.Dr. Fessenden gives an overview of his presentation which covered both research and field information on automated milking systems. He recommends going back to basics and formulating a rumen-friendly PMR with a complementary palatable feed that encourages the cows into the robot system. (5:57)The panel discusses ideas for driving cows to the robot on different types of PMRs, management of transition and late lactation cows in automated milking systems, and the use of custom pellets versus other supplemental feeds in the robot. (9:04)Dr. Fessenden talks about some of his experiences visiting automated milking systems in Europe and some of the differences between European and North American approaches to diet formulations in automated systems. The group goes on to talk about different options for supplemental feed formulations in the robot. (18:38)Dr. Fessenden and Dr. Tylutki share ideas for how feeding technology could help both traditional and automated milking farms in the future. They discuss more precise grouping of cows and targeted feeding of those groups to better match requirements, as well as how movement to different pens and diet changes can impact milk production. (23:45) Dr. Tylutki updates the group on advancements in the AMTS balancing tools for multiple robot feeds. He and Dr. Fessenden describe the challenges of developing new tools that are streamlined and user-friendly for nutritionists. They also delve into the role artificial intelligence and machine learning might play in ration balancing in the future. (29:32)Dr. Fessenden encourages nutritionists to think outside the box when working with automated milking herds to make decisions that are right for that particular farm. Dr. Tylutki chimes in with advice to spend time actually watching the cows on the farm, and Dr. Van Soest echoes this sentiment when it comes to troubleshooting issues with the robots themselves. Don't just assume it's an issue with the ration - ask or observe for yourself what may have changed on the farm that could contribute to the issue the farm is facing.
