The Critical Backstory to the First Thanksgiving with Paula Peters

Join Paula Peters, citizen of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe as she shares the historical and cultural legacy and story of the Wampanoag: the People of the First Light. She unravels common misperceptions and false narratives around the first “Thanksgiving” and the harvest of 1621 involving Native people and the first colonizers, the Pilgrims. By acknowledging what has gone before, she invites us to envision and collectively create a balanced way forward for humanity. The Wampanoag have lived in southeastern Massachusetts for more than 12,000 years. They are the tribe first encountered by Mayflower Pilgrims when they landed in Provincetown harbor and explored the eastern coast of Cape Cod and when they continued on to Patuxet (Plymouth) to establish Plymouth Colony. In 2020, America commemorated the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage and the founding of Plymouth Colony, a story that cannot be told without the perspective of the indigenous people who were here as that ship arrived and who still remain. On today's episode, Ari spoke with the best-selling author and historian of English and American history Nick Bunker about the Mayflower Pilgrims and how the Hebrew intellectual and religious tradition shaped their world, and ultimately birthed the United States of America. Along the way they talked about how Nick, a Roman Catholic from London, spent his most formative years immersed in the Jewish community of the Upper West Side of Manhattan; the importance of King James I; the rise of English interest in Biblical Hebrew; the origins of the Puritans; why the Pilgrims were fascinated by the medieval Jewish scholar Maimonides; Nick's career in investment banking and how it molded his work as a historian; and much more! Guest Quote“And one of the things you have to do as a historian is to show that process by which the events in one country and the other country interacted with each other. A crumbling monolith-like monument that looks more like it belongs with roman ruins than a Rhode Island swamp, is all that remains to remind us of one of the gravest injustices of King Philip's War. What was King Philip's War you ask? Yea I didn't know either, but it was an armed conflict in 1675–1676 between indigenous inhabitants of New England and the New England colonists along with their indigenous ‘allies'. The war was named for Metacom, the Wampanoag chief who adopted the name Philip because of the friendly relations between his father Massasoit and the Mayflower Pilgrims. The war continued in the most northern reaches of New England until the signing of the Treaty of Casco Bay on April 12, 1678. It's often considered a crucial battle, although a more accurate description of the events of that day would be massacre.   EVERYTHING TRUE CRIME GUYS:   https://linktr.ee/Truecrimeguysproductions Patreon.com/truecrimeguys Merch: truecrimeguys.threadless.com   Sources: https://thepublicsradio.org/article/site-of-great-swamp-massacre-returned-to-narragansett-indian-tribe?fbclid=IwAR3ATd11o2z3DopRMh2N0WT-FQijvJZUu-fyquCDENNeja9RIah197ckzAM&mc_cid=1952680b45&mc_eid=72718959ec https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Swamp_Fight https://youtu.be/ignLtfcqQkg https://youtu.be/Fu9rSBFP_HI https://www.historynet.com/blood-and-betrayal-king-philips-war/?f

Lost Massachusetts Returns...to Cornhill in Truro on Cape Cod. This place represents a pivotal moment in the history of Massachusetts, the site of a lost village now surrounded by summer homes. There had been encounters between natives of Massachusetts and Europeans for possibly hundreds of years. This was possibly the first time Europeans set foot in a Native American village. It is remembered as the moment Mayflower Pilgrims saved themselves from starvation by taking stored food from what is now known as Cornhill, what was a village of the Pamet people. The Pamet had relocated to their winter homes and were not there when the Pilgrims entered the village. Cornhill gets great ocean breezes in the summer but can be brutal at the time the Pilgrims arrived in November. The Nauset had good reason to be suspicious of the English but eventually became allies after the Pilgrims paid them for the stollen corn later. Find out more details in the second episode from season 2, including some possible information about the Nauset dogs. Full Text: The quintessential American holiday, Thanksgiving evolved from the Pilgrims' celebrations to thank God for the harvests that saved Plymouth Colony. What most people didn't learn in school is that nearly half the Mayflower Pilgrims died of starvation because many refused to work in the fields. Plymouth Colony originally had a socialist economy. Land and crops were held in common. In the words of Governor William Bradford, “the young men who were most able objected to being forced to spend their time and strength working for other men's wives and children without any recompense.” Collectivism incentivized colonists needlessly to rely on the efforts of others. Realizing this, Governor Bradford assigned each household its own plot of land. Families could keep what they produced or trade for things they needed. The result was a bountiful harvest in 1623. Instituting private property and respecting the autonomy of the family unit caused Plymouth to survive. Collectivism and central planning produce scarcity. Private property, free markets, and personal responsibility lead to prosperity and plenty. A healthy economy, with strong and independent families, enables a community to help those who genuinely need assistance. All are important lessons for America today from William Bradford's first Thanksgiving. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coffeewithcascade/message

Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) tell the story of the Mayflower, the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving in America. ----more---- The Pilgrims are protestant refugees from England. They are fleeing and intolerant England who persecute people who will not follow the established Church. At first they flee to Holland. But they do not want their children to grow up Dutch. So they decide to create an English colony in America. There is already a colony in Jamestown. But they decide to settle far from there. They want to an English Colony but one where they can practice their own religion. 102 colonist set out on two ships – the Speedwell and the Mayflower. But the Speedwell soon springs a leak and everyone transfers to the Mayflower. The journey is horrible. One person is lost overboard in a storm. The ship is blown off course. Eventually after over two months at sea they reach America. They are not where they wanted to be. But they make landfall and set up a new colony in what we now call Plymouth Bay, Massachusetts.   But they are not the only people there. There is already a native American tribe living there. But the Pilgrims make friends with the tribe. The tribe help teach them how to farm. The Pilgrims help the tribe with medicine.   To celebrate their first bumper harvest the Pilgrims celebrate Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is an old English holiday. But the Pilgrims also invite the native Americans to this years Thanksgiving. They feast on the great Harvest that they have collected. This is now widely recognised as the first Thanksgiving in America.   Today millions of Americans celebrate Thanksgiving and remember the Pilgrims and how they crossed an ocean to build a new and better society, one which became the United States of America.   Thirty million Americans can trace their ancestry back to just over 100 colonists on the Mayflower. This year is also the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage.   This episode was chosen by one of our listeners in America called Stephen. He joined our Patrons’ Club. Connie Baxter Marlow and Andrew Cameron – Revising Revisionist HistoryAired Tuesday, 16 July 2019, 5:00 PM EST / 2:00 PM PSTInterview with Connie Baxter Marlow and Andrew Cameron Bailey, Researchers and Makers of the Film “Seeds of Freedom”“Instead of pulling apart in a tug-of-war, we need to pull together in a tug of peace.” — Swami BeyondanandaMy favorite pleasantly provocative and curiosity-inducing question is … “Did you know?”Did you know … that there were fifty-four years of peace and friendship between the Mayflower Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians in Plymouth Colony between 1621 and 1675?You didn’t? Neither did I until I met this week’s guests Connie Baxter Marlow and Andrew Cameron Bailey some years ago, and they told me the inspiring story of how visionary leaders of two radically different cultures met and worked together to maintain an inter-cultural exchange that became what Bailey and Marlow call the “First Great Synthesis” between Europeans and American Indians. While many – including my own book Spontaneous Evolution credit the Iroquois Nation with the ideals and structures of governance that inspired our Constitution – Marlow and Cameron offer compelling evidence that many of these “seeds of freedom” came from the Pilgrims themselves.Connie Baxter Marlow is a descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, known as America’s First Couple, made famous by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem. Her great-great-grandfather James Phinney Baxter, a pre-eminent historian of early New England, was President of the New England Historical Genealogical Society for 20 years. Connie brings a unique perspective to her ancestors’ dreams for humanity, in that she has spent 30 years in close association with visionary Native American elders throughout the United States and Mexico, and has been creating forums for them to share their understanding of the nature of the Universe for over 20 years.Andrew Cameron Bailey calls himself a “latter-day pilgrim.” He sailed across the Atlantic and arrived in America on Thanksgiving Day, 1969. He was born in England and grew up in South Africa amongst the Zulus, holds degrees in science, English and social anthropology, and was a chemistry professor before emigrating to the United States. After meeting Connie in 2003 he became disturbed at the level of misinformation in the American psyche surrounding the settling of New England, and the ongoing deprecation and denigration of the Pilgrims and the Puritans in present-day America. Andrew is the author of the 21st Century historical mystery novel/screenplay “The Mayflower Revelations,” that sets the historical record straight in an entertaining, enlightening and inspiring way.If you’re ready to entertain a more complete and holistic view of the founding of our country, please tune in this Tuesday, July 16th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/One more thing… How YOU and WE Can Make a DifferenceHave you noticed that regardless of which of the two political parties you vote for, neither of them seem to be willing to confront Monsanto and agribusiness?
