This week, we're diving into Nigerian food culture with culinary anthropologist, food historian and now author of Chop Chop, Cooking the Food of Nigeria, Ozoz Sokoh. Her Kitchen Butterfly blog has been documenting the back story to this West African cuisine since 2009, but Chop Chop, her debut cookbook, has been a long time coming. It's already been nominated for an Andre Simon award and builds upon a rich tradition of cultural prodding at a food landscape that stretches way beyond the old country. Pop over to Gilly's Substack for Extra Bites of Ozoz including a recipe from Chop Chop. You can buy it from the CTB shop at Bookshop.org by clicking here, and this supports this ad-free listen. In today's episode, I sit down with entrepreneur Troy Smith, CEO and co-founder of Chop Chop, to talk about a delivery model built to actually support restaurants, drivers, and customers. I walk through why so many restaurants lose money using traditional platforms, and Troy breaks down how his flat-fee, no-commission system restores control to the people doing the work. We get into the razor-thin margins he experienced as a young McDonald's franchisee, the broken incentives that push fees higher, and why communities benefit when restaurants can serve their own customers again. It's a straightforward approach focused on fairness, transparency, and long-term sustainability.
Jerry & Amanda talk about the Chop Chop house. In 1987 a murder happened in the quiet college town of Boise, Idaho. The house where the murder took place is now known by locals as the Chop Chop House.
Ozoz Sokoh is a culinary anthropologist, food historian, and author of the new cook book “Chop Chop: Cooking the Foods of Nigeria” (Artisan, 2025). In the tradition of Julia Child's “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” and Madhur Jaffrey's “An Invitation to Indian Cooking,” “Chop Chop” offers both a cultural history and a hands-on introduction to the flavors of Nigeria. We spoke with Ozoz in a CulinaryArts@SPAC and WAMC on the Road event in Saratoga Springs, New York on November 15. At the event, we were all treated to authentic Nigerian dishes including a goat pepper soup, chin chin, puff puff, jollof rice, and more prepared by Keobi Restaurant of Albany, New York.

Hidden fees, high commissions, and driver exploitation have left restaurants struggling to stay afloat. Recognizing this broken system, Troy Smith, CEO of Chop Chop, created a solution designed to empower restaurants and drivers alike while saving money for small businesses.Chop Chop isn't your typical food delivery app. “We're not an ordering app,” Troy explained in today's episode. “We believe restaurants should take their own orders and payments. What we do is connect drivers with restaurants.” This unique approach eliminates the hefty commissions that traditional apps charge—often up to 30% of an order—enabling restaurants to retain more of their revenue.Troy's innovative model is simple yet impactful. Restaurants pay a flat $199 monthly fee to access the app, allowing them to connect with vetted drivers who deliver orders. Unlike other platforms, Chop Chop ensures drivers are paid fairly—directly from the restaurant through Stripe, with funds held in escrow until delivery is confirmed. Customers receive real-time updates via SMS without needing to download the app, while restaurants maintain full control of the customer relationship. This streamlined system offers a lifeline to small businesses, especially mom-and-pop restaurants, which have been disproportionately affected by high delivery fees. “Deliveries have become a huge revenue stream for restaurants, especially since COVID,” Troy shared. “But the current system just isn't working. Restaurants are paying more money to send food to their own customers than ever before.”Chop Chop's mission extends beyond financial benefits. Many drivers and restaurants in the network are first-generation immigrants who often face exploitation in the gig economy. “FundingHope really resonated with us because they're looking out for the small guy,” Troy said. Chop Chop's crowdfunding campaign on FundingHope invites customers, drivers, and supporters to invest in the platform and help scale this game-changing solution. For just $199 a month—less than the price of a cup of coffee per day—restaurants can reclaim control, drivers can earn fairly, and customers can support their favorite local businesses without guilt. Chop Chop is more than a delivery app; it's a movement to restore fairness and transparency in food delivery.Visit ChopChop.mobi or FundingHope to learn more about this revolutionary app and its crowdfunding campaign.tl;dr:Troy Smith explains how Chop Chop empowers restaurants by eliminating high delivery fees and exploitation. The platform charges restaurants a flat $199 monthly fee, connecting them with vetted drivers for deliveries.Chop Chop ensures drivers are paid fairly via Stripe, fostering transparency and trust in the process.Inspired by personal experiences and challenges during COVID, Troy created a practical, scalable solution. The company invites investors to join its FundingHope campaign, supporting a fairer food delivery ecosystem. How to Develop Making a Plan As a SuperpowerTroy Smith's superpower, as he describes it, is the ability to “make a plan.” Growing up in Zimbabwe, he adopted the Afrikaans phrase maak a plan, meaning to solve problems through creativity and resourcefulness. “When something presents itself, a challenge, something is going wrong, you make a plan,” Troy explained in this episode. One powerful story that exemplifies this superpower occurred during the early days of COVID. Troy visited a small Japanese restaurant, where the owner, short on staff, asked him to deliver food for $10. This simple act planted the seed for Chop Chop. “She made the plan for me,” Troy said, “and I realized we could turn this into an app, connecting drivers with restaurants while ensuring fair pay.”To develop this superpower, Troy suggests starting with observation. “Instead of jumping in and trying to fix things, take a moment to see what's going on,” he shared. Identifying the root cause of a problem is key to crafting an effective solution. He also emphasizes the importance of systems, a lesson he learned while running McDonald's franchises in South Africa.By following Troy's example and advice, you can make problem-solving a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileTroy Smith (he/him):CEO, Chop ChopAbout Chop Chop: Chop Chop is a logistics platform that empowers restaurants to run first-party delivery without the costs and headaches of hiring their own drivers. We are not an ordering platform. Restaurants continue to take orders and payments directly from their customers. We connect them with local verified drivers who are screened for license and insurance and who complete deliveries on demand. Unlike third-party apps, we do not take commissions or add hidden fees. Instead, we charge a flat subscription, allowing restaurants to keep more revenue, drivers to earn fairly, and customers to avoid surprise charges.Website: chopchop.mobiOther URL: invest.fundinghope.com/offering/chop-chop/detailsBiographical Information: Troy Smith is the co-founder and CEO of Chop Chop, a logistics platform that helps restaurants run first-party delivery without relying on costly third-party apps. Brayden's vasectomy journey offers more than just medical insights—it's a raw, often hilarious exploration of masculinity, vulnerability, and reproductive responsibility. From the moment he walks into the urologist's office to the surprising discovery that four medical professionals would be witnessing his most intimate procedure, his story unfolds with equal parts humor and authenticity. The actual vasectomy experience proves both less and more than expected. While the physical pain was manageable through medication and local anesthesia, the psychological vulnerability of being exposed while conscious creates an environment where Brayden's natural defense mechanism—cracking jokes—takes center stage, ultimately leading to laughter from the medical team during the most sensitive moments of the procedure.Throughout the conversation, the hosts tackle persistent myths surrounding vasectomies, addressing questions many men secretly wonder but rarely ask: Will it affect my sex drive? What happens to ejaculate afterward? Does recovery really only take 48 hours? The discussion ventures into deeper territory too, examining why society still places the contraceptive burden primarily on women despite female sterilization being significantly more invasive and requiring longer recovery periods. What makes this episode particularly valuable is its exploration of the emotional aspects rarely discussed in clinical settings. The sense of finality, the complex feelings about ending one's reproductive capability, and partners' reactions all come into play. Brayden's ultimate conclusion—that the peace of mind and responsibility toward his partner outweigh any temporary discomfort—offers listeners a thoughtful perspective from someone on the other side of a decision many men contemplate but fewer discuss openly.Ready to hear more uncensored conversations about topics usually left undiscussed? Let's watch the latest cringe sessions from our favorite set of mindless Minnesotan radio hosts. Patrick wants to check in on our favorite fats to see what they have been up to. Our favorite sitting chef has a recipe for a pizza that you're definitely not going to want to try, and another once of our tubby heroes thinks she's going to become a runner. Finally, did you know Corey Adam has been busy cranking out reels that nobody watches and he still hasn't figured out how to get the editing and sound right on his own phone. Strap in! ...
1987 Boise sounds rough this week as we talk about the Idaho Amityville house. Some ghosts may be good natured but this week we think maybe the intentions are bad... forever. "Day of Chaos" by Kevin MacLeod

Check out my pirates mini series on youtube: FindEversail - YouTubeLet me know your thoughts: instagram.com/incognitbeauLuffy, Zoro, and Nami are captured by Buggy the Clown, a pirate who has imprisoned the people of Orange Town in his own personal circus. Luffy manages to swallow the map before capture and learns of Buggy's ties to Red-Haired Shanks, Luffy's idol. Flashback reveals that Shanks had rescued Luffy from a mountain bandit named Higuma, but lost his arm in the process. Shanks gave Luffy his straw hat so that he can achieve his dream of being King of the Pirates. Buggy attempts to drown Luffy in a tank of seawater, but Zoro and Nami, spurned by Luffy's optimism, escape and rescue him. Buggy, who ate the Chop Chop fruit and can split himself apart, has his body parts locked in boxes as Luffy launches him away, freeing the town. Meanwhile, Koby meets with Garp who deduces that he was with pirates prior to joining the Marines, but allows him to stay due to his honesty. In turn Morgan is punished for lying about the attack on the base. While sailing away, Nami contacts someone about having the map in her possession.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Chop-chop body cases in the Philippines are one of the most discussed topics in true crime, especially here in the Philippines. Most fans of our show would send us episode requests through DMs and polls urging us to cover more chop-chop body cases. In fact, our episodes relating to body dismemberments, particularly the gruesome murders of Lyndon Masinsin in 2017 and Elsa Castillo in 1993, were among the most played episodes in our library. Now, another chop-chop lady case has caught our attention, and it happened recently. On June 9, 2023, dismembered body parts, such as the head, arms, and legs of a woman, were found by scavengers under a bridge and in a ravine in Barangay Dela Paz, Antipolo City. Subsequently, authorities found the victim's remaining body parts in a ravine in Barangay San Jose, 10 kilometers from where the victim was first seen. SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Dan has a bigger story set in Boise, Idaho. Boise's Murder House aka the Chop Chop house. This is a somewhat recent true crime story that leads to numerous reported paranormal encounters. Very creepy story. Then, a bit of tragic lore revolving around rural Colorado's Third Bridge aka Ghost Bridge - and some reports of modern encounters there as well. Lynze switches it up this week with one, big, fat juicy tale. A woman is plagued by visits from the hat man. Her dad was potentially cursed long before she was born. Is there a connection?New Merch: Releasing in the bad magic store this week are deluxe jumbo bookmarks! These things are super nice, thick and velvety. Each set comes with 6 different bookmarks, designed to resemble the pages of an ancient witch's text. A perfect stocking stuffer for the holidays! Also now in store, new merch from Casko! I forgot about that random scenario I made up a few weeks ago - a Costco type store that sold caskets and also had random people handing out free snacks. Grab your Casko tee or hoodie to show your support for the world's leading wholesale casket manufacturer.
