La impostura acompaña a la humanidad desde sus orígenes. Su secreto no reside tanto en el farsante como en la gran cantidad de gente que necesita creerle. Todo gran engaño se sostiene sobre un público que quiere ver a un rey resucitado, a un príncipe perdido o a un superviviente heroico, un público que prefiere la ilusión antes que admitir su propia ingenuidad. El caso más antiguo documentado se remonta al 522 a.C., cuando el mago Gaumata se hizo pasar por Esmerdis, el hermano asesinado de Cambises II. Gaumata llegó a gobernar el imperio aqueménida hasta que Darío le derrocó. Se encargó además de que la posteridad supiese que había acabado con un impostor grabando la historia en piedra. En la Inglaterra de los Tudor, el flamenco Perkin Warbeck dijo ser Ricardo de York, uno de los príncipes ejecutados en la Torre de Londres. Durante varios años recorrió las cortes europeas antes de acabar ahorcado en 1499. Años más tarde, tras la muerte de Sebastián I de Portugal en la batalla de Alcazarquivir sin que se encontrase su cadáver, surgiría el sebastianismo. Aparecieron varios falsos Sebastianes uno de ellos un pastelero castellano, Gabriel de Espinosa, y el otro un calabrés errante, Marco Túlio Catizzone, que ni hablaba portugués ni se parecía al monarca pero aún así encontró adeptos que le creían. El siglo de las luces no hizo honor a su nombre rindiéndose a los charlatanes más audaces. Un aventurero francés llamado George Psalmanazar engañó a todos en Inglaterra asegurando que provenía de una tribu exótica de la isla de Formosa. El conde de Saint-Germain insinuaba ser inmortal y Giuseppe Balsamo, convertido en conde de Cagliostro, se dedicó a vender elixires y extraños cultos masónicos que tenían mucho público. Aquella élite ilustrada era precisamente la que más deseaba ser embaucada. El siglo XIX trajo fraudes a otra escala. El escocés Gregor MacGregor se inventó un país entero en Centroamérica, Poyais, para el que emitió moneda y títulos de deuda en la City londinense. Mary Baker se transformó en la princesa Caraboo de una isla inexistente. Todos anhelaban exotismo y eso mismo fue lo que obtuvieron. Ya en el siglo XX, un zapatero prusiano llamado Wilhelm Voigt demostró que con un simple uniforme de capitán se podía dar un gran golpe. El austriaco Victor Lustig llegó a vender dos veces la torre Eiffel a unos chatarreros y a timar al mismísimo Al Capone. La ejecución de los miembros de la familia imperial rusa dio a Franziska Schanzkowska, una joven polaca de extracción humilde, la oportunidad de hacerse pasar por la gran duquesa Anastasia. En la posguerra el español Enric Marco se hizo pasar por un superviviente de los campos de concentración y gracias a ello ganó mucha celebridad. En la misma época Ferdinand Waldo Demara fue encadenando oficios, algunos muy delicados como el de cirujano, sin tener un solo título. Lo que une todas estas historias no es tanto el descaro de los farsantes como el deseo colectivo que supieron encarnar. El impostor no inventa esos deseos, se limita a representarlos y luego cada cual proyecta sobre ellos lo que ya lleva dentro. Por eso los recordamos más con simpatía que con rencor porque nos revelan hasta qué punto nos atraen las mentiras reconfortantes.
