You can learn more about this conference here: https://ourstoriesourfaith.org/philly25/. Plenary description: Prominent historian Placid J. Podipara, CMI is often credited with the most succinct description of the identity of Thomas Christians as Christian in religion, Oriental in worship, and Indian in culture. Countering post-independence claims that Christianity was simply a tool of Western colonialism, Podipara emphasized that this ancient Christian community was not a product of Westernization, but rather as old as Christianity itself and as indigenous to the Indian soil as other religions in Kerala. My talk explores this narrative of origins and what it means for those in the diaspora who are rediscovering their ancient roots today. Jaisy A. Joseph is an Assistant Professor of Ecclesiology and Theology of Ministry at Villanova University. She received her PhD in Systematic Theology from Boston College in 2019. Aside from the academy, she is very involved in the lay ministry of the SyroMalabar Catholic Eparchy of Chicago. Her primary concern is to work with the emerging second generation of this immigrant community, particularly regarding issues of identity, domestic violence, and intergenerational healing.Photo by Wietse Jongsma on Unsplash This is a public episode. Ever wondered how to talk to your children about loss in a way that's both gentle and meaningful? In this powerful episode of Reading with Your Kids, author Hannah van Campen shares her incredible journey of creating "Believe," a children's picture book that tackles grief in the most beautiful way possible. Inspired by her personal experience of losing her father, Hannah crafted a touching story about a child and a caterpillar that transforms into a butterfly. The book isn't just a story—it's a tool for healing, complete with journaling pages that encourage families to preserve precious memories. What makes this conversation so special is how it challenges the traditional, hushed approach to discussing loss. Hannah and host Jed Doherty agree that children are far more resilient and understanding than we often give them credit for. They're not fragile; they're curious and capable of processing complex emotions when we approach them with honesty and compassion. The book's magic lies in its metaphor: just because someone changes form doesn't mean they're gone. It's a powerful message that can help kids understand loss across various situations—whether it's a loved one's passing, a friend moving away, or even saying goodbye to a beloved pet. Parents, take note: this isn't about shielding kids from grief, but walking through it together. The book provides a gentle, accessible way to have those tough conversations, turning a potentially painful experience into an opportunity for connection and healing. Hannah's approach is simple yet profound: remember the love, cherish the memories, and understand that those we love are always with us, just in a different way. "Believe" isn't just a book—it's a compassionate guide for families navigating the complex landscape of loss. We also welcome back author Fahad Siddiqui from Young Trees Education. Fahad shares his innovative approach to transforming education through AI-powered lesson plan generators. Focusing on developing critical skills like creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, Fahad aims to make learning more engaging and dynamic for students, moving beyond traditional rote memorization methods. Fahad also discusses his educational book series, including Mission Upcycle, which encourages children to be creative with recycled materials, and the Our Story series, which highlights lesser-known historical figures like Razia Sultana. His ultimate goal is to empower children, provide them with tools for future success, and inspire a more thoughtful, sustainable approach to learning and living. Creativity and Imagination: Man's ability to Create something uplifts the human spirit. Imagination fuels creativity. Imagination leads to the thoughts that become ideas — and thoughts become things. Inspiration from Nature: As Monarch butterflies need the milkweed plant, Evana Henri needs Wild Aspen from Colorado forests to make her Wild Aspen Exfoliators.. Wild Aspen is sustainably and responsibly sourced from Colorado forests. Harvesting is part of a forestry plan to prevent wildfires and revitalize forests. Sourcing Practices (from their website): Partner with local, reputable suppliers. Suppliers are government-approved and follow U.S. Forestry guidelines. These efforts support both the environment and forest health. The Origin of the Idea: Most sponges are synthetic, made from crude oil (non-renewable). Contain toxic chemicals and microplastics. Pollute water, soil, and the broader environment. Evana and her husband have scientific backgrounds. Motivated by love for the planet. Focused on solving the "Dirty Sponge Problem": About the Business: Sustainable sourcing of natural materials. Reducing global plastic pollution. Committed to: Coming Soon: Turmeric-infused Wild Aspen Face & Body Exfoliator Check the FAQ and Our Story sections on their website for more details. Some of you may have followed Sully Does the Loop on social media. Scott shares how they made the Loop work for them before retiring, including how Lauren traveled between work and the boat, how they welcomed many guests aboard along the way, and why they did it now. The Great Loop is a 6,000-mile water route that Loopers cruiser aboard their own boats. At its essence, it's a circumnavigation of the eastern U.S. and part of Canada via mostly protected inland waterways. The Great Loop route follows the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the Chesapeake Bay, and the New York Canals northwards, goes across the Great Lakes, south on the Inland Rivers, and then east Gulf Coast to complete the Loop.
