Most of us desire wholeness yet we attempt to live our lives divided. We have one foot in and one foot out. Our hearts are fragmented and often confused by a whirlwind of internal and external forces. This creates turmoil, pain and angst for us and those around us. Pastor Chris Kipp teaches about this from Acts 19:11-20 and the surprising effect of revival on our divided hearts.

In presenting the story of seven sons of Sceva scurrying from an evil spirit, Luke helps us approach the power of evil with some welcome but dark humor. It is neither Paul, nor the Word of God, nor the Holy Spirit that drives out evil. In this story, it is evil defeating evil that allows the good to prevail. Rev. Dr. Larry Hayward preaches on the Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Scripture lesson is Acts 19:11-20.

My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power. So that you faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power. -1 Corinthians 2:4-5

We must rely on God's power because we are at war. In order to experience God's power we must first pursue God's presence. We can pursue God's presence by declaring war on our sin.

The sons of Sceva try to cast out a demon in the name of Jesus "whom Paul preaches". They do not have a personal faith in Jesus Christ. So too, today, there are preachers who use the name of Jesus and claim to do things in Jesus name but they do not preach the true gospel.

Paul's two years in Ephesus. Paul contrast of power of God that flows from a relationship with him versus religious ritual.
Have you ever felt that you had a strong belief in something the Bible teaches only to find yourself in the middle of a trial where that belief was tested? In this message, we will talk about how faith is a combination of what we believe and the importance of focusing our minds on what we belief in the middle of a trial. More specifically, we will talk about how learning to focus our faith is an important part of us learning how to effectively put on and use the Full Armor of God.
This penetrating question is asked about us in many ways.

I Need a Miracle Acts 19:11-20 Daniel Crowther
A look at the book of Acts.
Many people sowed many seeds in 2008, not only believing it to be the year of new beginnings, but thinking all the beginnings of the year would be favorable ones. Since that wasn't necessarily the case, people are entering 2009 with off-the-charts expectations about what this year will bring. However, what we must be mindful of is that while good things will happen this year, turbulence is still to come. Those who will not only survive but thrive this year will be those who are able to remain calm and maintain a level of consistency no matter what happens. The key to remaining consistent in uneasy times is the ability to keep first things first and get back to the basics of Christian life. When we take care of the basic things of God and do what we're supposed to in every area of our lives, then we can put ourselves in position for God to bless us tremendously, regardless of what's going on in the world right now. Join Pastor Cylar in this third message of the "First Things First" Series as he shows how consecration makes the difference between functioning in power or weakness in ministry. What we desire from God is going to cost us something and our level of consecration is the price tag.
