Genuine Faith in a World of Skepticism (Dave Sloop+; 11/23/2025) by Church of the Holy Spirit - Roanoke
Reaching the next generation is something that we talk about a lot on the shows. How do we get the young people in our churches to continue to follow Christ with everything that they have? To live for Christ has been a challenge for every church age and for every generation, but Gen Z is uniquely complicated. They live in a world that prizes self-expression that discourages conviction. They celebrate spirituality but they reject absolute truth because that's just the world in which they live in. They can't even trust their own eyes many times. As pastors, parents, and mentors, how do we not only help young believers to take their faith seriously, but also inspire them to be bold, evangelical, unashamed and mission minded? In a culture that often labels faith in Christianity as intolerant. These are things that our kids face. Now, on today's show, we are talking with Austin Dutton, pastor at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Lawton, Alabama. He makes an investment in the youth there. Young adults and student ministry alike. And we're going to talk with him about what it looks like for parents, churches and youth pastors to encourage our youth to move from silent belief to outspoken faith.Visit https://www.lfbi.org/learnmore
This powerful sermon on James 2:14-26, "Faith and Deeds," provides a call to active discipleship. Pastor Abby challenges us to understand that true faith is not simply a belief or profession, but one that is proven through practical action. Referencing the biblical examples of Abraham and Rahab, she underscores James' teaching that "faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." We are encouraged to put on the "gloves of our faith" and find ways to tangibly serve our neighbors and community in Christ's name.

In this sermon on James 2:14-26, Pastor Patrick Austin tackles the seemingly contradictory Biblical teachings about faith and works. He establishes that Scripture doesn't contradict itself, then explains that James is combating a false belief that how you live after professing faith doesn't matter. The pastor articulates that "a saving faith in Jesus evidences itself through a life of good works done to the glory of God." Pastor Austin identifies two key evidences of genuine faith: showing heartfelt care for the needy rather than offering empty words, and living in obedience rather than merely voicing intellectual belief. He illustrates these principles through Abraham and Rahab, who both demonstrated their faith through concrete actions. Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac and Rahab's protection of the Israelite spies weren't attempts to earn God's favor but confirmations that their faith was genuine. The pastor concludes by challenging us to examine our faith, place our trust in Jesus, and actively demonstrate our faith through serving others and walking in obedience. WE'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! She shares about the wonder of receiving instead of faking our faith or trying to earn God's favor. David Forsyth addresses the real dangers associated with growing up Christian in a believing home. While tremendous blessings accompany a Christian upbringing, children growing up in a Christian environment face the peril of mistaking conformity for genuine conversion. The sermon explores Romans 2:1-29, revealing three critical dangers for those growing up Christian: external morality without heart transformation, Bible knowledge that remains intellectual rather than life-changing, and religious ritual divorced from spiritual reality.Growing up Christian does not guarantee salvation, as Paul's indictment of first-century Jews demonstrates that morality, religious knowledge, and ritual observance are insufficient for right standing before God. Children growing up Christian may appear squeaky clean externally while remaining spiritually dead inside. The message emphasizes that growing up Christian requires more than external conformity—it demands genuine faith in Christ that transforms the heart. Just as Jewish people relied erroneously on their heritage and rituals, children growing up Christian risk trusting in their moral behavior, biblical literacy, and church participation rather than embracing Christ personally. The sermon concludes with a passionate call for those growing up in the Christian faith to move beyond externals and embrace the righteousness that comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. ★ Support this podcast ★

In this episode, we explore the sobering picture of separation—the wheat gathered safely and the chaff burned away. Jesus reminds us that not everyone who appears to belong truly does, and that God is not deceived. We'll look at how this truth applies not only to our personal walk of faith but also to the church today, challenging us to examine our hearts and live with authenticity before the Lord.
What does it mean to live out a genuine faith? Pastor Whit sits down with his former Wheaton College professor, Dr. Chris Vlachos—now teaching in Jerusalem—to wrestle with that very question. Together, they explore the book of James as a wake-up call, reminding us that real faith always shows up in action. They unpack how James pushes us to obey Scripture, form a biblical imagination, and bring Christ's love into the everyday moments that can make someone else's day. Sunday Morning Service with Pastor Mike Shoaf
In this episode, Whitney teaches through Luke 7:36-50 about a nameless woman who responds to Jesus in an awkward but beautiful display of affection. We see a great contrast between the host, Simon the Pharisee, who demonstrates cynicism, doubt, and judgment, and the woman who pours out sacrificially at the feet of Jesus, a woman known in town only as a sinner. This brief episode touches on the ways that we attempt to make ourselves look better than we are, while challenging us to live a version of faith that expresses itself in sincere action. It offers a fresh look at repentance and pushes us to ask how our faith is known beyond the words that we speak. Social media: IG - wlscarboroughShow Notes/Quotes:“Is Whitney even your real name?”“We have a tendency to make ourselves look better than we are.”“Genuine faith reveals itself in sincere action.”“I believe that repetition as we study God's Word is one of the most helpful and important things we can do.”“Eugene Peterson, the author of the Message version of the Bible, writes, ‘the NO we say to the world's lies and the YES we say to God's truth is repentance. It is always and everywhere the first word in the Christian life.'” “I think repentance is very hard for us, because we have a tendency to make ourselves look better than we are.”“My faith and your faith will look different, but our faith needs to visibly look like something. And I believe that it probably ought to look more like a messy, awkward display of abundant gratitude to our Savior and less like a crossed arm, judgmental view of our neighbor.”“Dane Ortlund is the author of a book called Gentle and Lowly, and he writes, ‘It's the most counterintuitive aspect of Christianity, that we are declared right with God not once we begin to get our act together but once we collapse into honest acknowledgement that we never will.'” Verses:Luke 7:36-50 1 Samuel 16:7James 2:262 Chronicles 7:14

In this first of many sermons in the books of 1 and 2 Peter, Pastor Andrew emphasizes the important theme of Peter's first letter: Take Heart! Because of the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, those who persevere in Him can have true hope amidst their own suffering and hardships, knowing that God's saving promises will be delivered both now and forever. This message also introduces the historical background of the Apostle Peter—his identity, relationship with Jesus, role in the early church, and legacy. This first message also highlights the foundational truths of 1 Peter 1:1–25, including the identity of believers as elect exiles, the new birth into a living hope, and the refining purpose of trials. These themes set the stage for the rest of the letter, emphasizing God's grace, the believer's secure future, and the reality of trials in a fallen world. ________________________________________ Links to Sermon Notes & Answers: ➤Sermon Notes (Blank): https://www.sheridanhills.org/_files/ugd/30fec2_8ae84fa32c58492d9282875e9fd6f208.pdf ➤Sermon Notes (Answers): https://www.sheridanhills.org/_files/ugd/30fec2_07b9fd2f0068439689b8f6967063b052.pdf ________________________________________ In this video: Review of previous sermons in series Main Points Application ________________________________________ Subscribe to this channel to catch weekly expositional sermons from the Bible. ________________________________________ Explore more sermons and information: https://www.sheridanhills.org/watch-new ________________________________________ Follow us: ➤Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sheridanhills/ ➤Twitter: https://twitter.com/sheridanhills01 ➤Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sheridanhills/
