Al, Zach, John Luke, and Christian wrestle with why intimacy feels so difficult for American men—both with God and in marriage. Following along with C.S. Lewis's Surprised by Joy, they explore how knowledge alone can't produce real closeness, and why desire and longing shape the way men actually live. The guys challenge the idea that faith is about mastering concepts instead of participating in a relationship. They point toward a hopeful vision of intimacy that isn't forced or performed, but rediscovered through joy, presence, and learning to live inside God's story rather than observing it from a distance. Today's conversation is about Lesson 3-4 of C.S. Lewis on Christianity taught by visiting Hillsdale professor Michael Ward. Take the course with us at no cost to you! Lewis's writings bring the great questions of the Christian faith to life. Through his imaginative and invigorating style, Lewis answers these questions in ways that are compelling to those outside Christianity and energizing to those within the Christian faith. In this free, seven-lecture course, Professor Michael Ward—a leading scholar of C.S. Lewis—will explore Lewis's: argument for objective moral value in response to the rise of modern subjectivism; bittersweet path to conversion and the role of enjoyment in the Christian life; advice regarding the proper way to pray and read the Bible; teachings concerning the purpose of pain and how to confront suffering and loss; insights about the nature of heaven and hell. This course examines these fundamental topics not only through his classic works—including Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and The Abolition of Man—but also through Lewis's personal experiences with doubt, conversion, suffering, grief, and joy. Through this course, students will discover Lewis's core lessons regarding the truth and goodness of the Christian faith and how to apply those lessons to one's life.  Join us today in discovering C.S. Pastor Paul Irminger. How Are You? It is a simple question we ask often, but rarely answer honestly, especially when it comes to our spiritual health. Each week of this series we will look at a different part of our lives: our intimacy with God, our integrity, and our influence on others. These three questions give us a simple and healthy way to share our spiritual life with a trusted friend.

Richard Ellis Talks

The most important thing in life is not to do a bunch of good, even religious things, but rather it is to spend time building our relationship with Jesus. Life can get plenty busy and we can be easily distracted, but we must make sure to stop what we're doing to sit at Jesus' feet and just listen to what He might have to say to us.

Kristen Welch is an author, speaker, and the founder of Mercy House Global, but her story is shaped less by achievement and more by surrender. Raised in a generous, Christian home, Kristen followed God's lead into ministry, writing, and motherhood. Her love for writing led her into the early Christian mom-blogging world where she found community and influence, but it was a 2010 blogging trip to Kenya with Compassion International that unsettled her faith and reordered her calling. That encounter became the catalyst for Mercy House Global and for a lifelong journey of learning what it means to say yes to God with open hands.   Through Mercy House, Kristen has spent the past fifteen years walking alongside vulnerable women and families through job creation, orphan prevention, and discipleship, both globally and locally. Along the way, she has learned that generosity and ministry busyness without intimacy with God can quietly hollow out the soul. Her story reflects the cost of faithful work, the danger of doing for God without being with Him, and the grace God offers through rest, repentance, and renewed friendship with Him.   This conversation invites all of us to reflect on how God calls us to slow down, reorient our hearts, and rediscover satisfaction in His presence while living generously.   Major Topics Include: Generosity in hospitality Obedience through small, faithful yeses Using influence for Kingdom purpose Serving without losing intimacy with God The danger of doing for God without being with God Identity rooted in sonship, not productivity Parenting through embodied generosity Slowing down to practice God's presence QUOTES TO REMEMBER “Just do the next right thing.” “We were always looking for ways to use what we had for the gospel of hospitality.” “The opportunity to use the writing skill and the blog platform for God's glory really became a sweet spot for me and it changed my life.” “I will spend the rest of my life answering the question, ‘what am I doing to help the vulnerable in our communities and in our world?'” “God used the poor to help me find Him in a new way.” “God doesn't need us to do any of this, He invites us to do it.” “Being with God is the best use of our time.” “It is not a waste of time to spend time with God.” “When we live as generous people, our kids will too.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Mercy House Global Kristen Welch's Website Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World by Kristen Welch Raising World Changers in a Changing World by Kristen Welch Compassion International When Helping Hurts (see our interview with coauthor Brian Fikkert) Women Doing Well (see our interview with president Julie Wilson) The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Revelation 3:20 | Christ's Invitation to Intimacy   Behold, I stand at the door and knock. We often fall into the habit of only going to God when we need something from Him, but we fail to build intimacy in the relationship. Just as we need to tell our spouse that we love them, it is crucial that we tell God we love Him and thank Him for all He's done for us. It's in remembering to praise Him, even in small ways, that we can truly minister to and bless His heart.

Before the foundation of the world, Jesus shared perfect glory and intimacy with the Father, yet humanity was created by God, for God, and to be like God in order to live in divine connection with Him. From the garden to the cross, God's desire has always been friendship, not distance. Jesus made this clear when He said He no longer calls us servants but friends, revealing the heart of God and the depth of His love. That friendship came at a great cost, not with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, chosen before the world began so that we could be restored to radical intimacy with God.

The sermon centers on the transformative call to make Jesus our first love and primary obsession, moving from mere knowledge of Him to intimate, revelatory encounter. Drawing from Paul's prayers in Ephesians, it emphasizes that true intimacy with Christ requires divine revelation, not just religious routine, and that spiritual disciplines must be oriented toward encounter rather than performance. The speaker illustrates this through personal testimony, showing how surrender, humility, and trials—like public humiliation—thicken the soul's capacity to bear God's presence and glory. Practical guidance is offered: prioritize time with God not for duty but for encounter, and evaluate spiritual rhythms not by activity but by fruit—increased love, joy, peace, freedom, and deeper relational transformation. Ultimately, the message challenges every believer to ask whether Jesus remains at the center of their life, urging a daily, intentional return to Him as the source of true fulfillment and power in a broken world.

Prayer reflects our intimate, honest relationship with God; but sometimes, prayer is just hard. What do we do when we enter into our prayer time with God and nothing. When the world feels on fire, how do our souls find rest in God alone? This week's two-part episode is close to my heart. In the wake of recent violence, I first pause to reflect on what it means to choose love in an age when outrage feels easier. From there, I turn to a conversation with my friend and mentor, Dr. Stephen Macchia. Steve has spent decades guiding people into deeper intimacy with God through practices of silence, prayer, and community. Together we explore the barriers distraction creates, why being truly listened to is so healing, and how slowing down opens space for God's presence in our lives. This episode is an invitation to lay down outrage, pick up compassion, and step into the quiet spaces where God does His best work.

The biggest thing blocking your intimacy with God isn't what you think. For years, I believed distance from Him was only about my sin. But what I discovered is that sin doesn't just separate—it distorts how we see God. I used to think He was ashamed of me, angry, or unwilling to welcome me back. That false view of God kept me away even more than the sin itself. In this episode, I share a pivotal moment from Passion 2022 where confession and hearing God's truth spoken over me completely changed the way I saw Him. We'll look at how sin clouds our vision of God, how holiness clears it, and why renewing your mind with His Word is the only way to see Him as He truly is—merciful, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. This isn't just theology—it's deeply personal. Because the way you see God will always determine how you interact with Him. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
