Human growth can seem to just happen—genes, care, and nurture set each of us on a trajectory across the lifespan. But how do people actually grow toward wholeness, and is virtue even the point?Psychologists Liz Hall and Todd Hall of Biola University's Rosemead School of Psychology, coauthors of Relational Spirituality, bring psychological science and Christian theology together to answer. The conversation grows out of the Martin Institute's Practice Unto Virtue project, which gathered theologians, psychologists, philosophers, and biblical scholars at Westmont College in spring 2026 to ask how Christian practices like prayer, fasting, and service form Christlike virtue.In this episode, Liz and Todd Hall explain a relational account of human transformation: We are formed in relationship, grow through relationship, and relationship is where growth is headed. Their answer to the workshop's question is direct—virtue alone is not the telos of spiritual growth. The goal is intimacy with God, union with Christ, and practices and virtues matter because they grow out of that union, support it, and make more room for it.They discuss implicit, gut-level relational knowledge, attachment filters and relational contrast experiences, and why willpower, spiritual highs, intellectualizing, and spiritual bypass so often leave the deepest layer of the self untouched. Then, in the middle of uncertainty about what comes next, Jesus gives them something the world cannot manufacture: His peace. Together, Jamie and Jane explore what it means to recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives, how love for Jesus shapes our obedience, and the difference between temporary peace based on circumstances and the lasting peace that comes from Christ. Jesus never promised His followers a life without trouble, questions, or uncertainty. He promised something better: His presence in the middle of it. If your heart has been anxious, overwhelmed, or searching for peace, pull up a chair. John 14 reminds us that we have a Helper, we have His presence, and we have a peace the world cannot give. As He finishes, one of His disciples comes to Him with a request that reveals something profound: "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples." They didn't ask Him to teach them to preach. They didn't ask Him to teach them to heal or perform miracles. They asked Him to teach them to pray. Because they watched Jesus pray and saw something they didn't have—a connection, a depth, an intimacy with the Father that was unlike anything they'd ever witnessed. And Jesus gives them a template. Not a script to recite mechanically. Not a formula to perform. A framework to inhabit—a structure that shapes how we approach God and how we live our lives. Through guided meditation, discover the profound movement of this prayer. It begins with God: "Father, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon." Before we bring our needs, we orient ourselves toward God. We remember who He is. We align ourselves with His purposes. We begin not with what we want but with who He is. Then it moves to our daily need: "Give us each day the food we need." Not next year's provision. Not a guarantee for the future. Today's. It's a deliberate invitation to daily dependence—to come back to God every morning with open hands, acknowledging that everything we have comes from Him and everything we need must come from Him. Then to our relationships: "Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us." This is perhaps the most searching line in the prayer. We can't receive forgiveness with a closed fist. The posture that receives grace is the same posture that extends it. You cannot hold onto unforgiveness and receive God's forgiveness at the same time. And finally to our protection: "Don't let us yield to temptation." We acknowledge our weakness. We stop pretending we're strong enough on our own. We ask for God's strength to carry us through what we cannot face alone. This episode explores how this prayer is a complete life of faith in six lines—worship, dependence, forgiveness, and protection. Jesus didn't give us a recitation. He gave us a relationship. Learn how to take each phrase and make it personal, specific, and honest—filling in the blanks with your specific life, your specific needs, your specific sins, your specific temptations. When Jesus rebuked the disciples for having “little faith” in Matthew 8, He was not speaking of saving faith—He was addressing the practical, daily faith needed to trust Him in the middle of a storm. In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef reminds believers that when intimacy with God weakens, fear and panic can quickly take over. Fear-conquering faith requires absolute trust in God's sovereignty. It is the kind of faith that depends on Him completely, receives what He provides with an open heart, and believes He is working out His purposes even when the storm is raging. Romans 8:28 assures us that God works all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Dr. Youssef challenges a common contradiction in the Christian life: we trust God with our eternal souls, yet often hesitate to trust Him with our daily needs. God wants our professed faith to become lived faith—faith that trusts Him with relationships, resources, decisions, fears, and the future. When you walk closely with God and seek Him in prayer at the first sign of fear, your focus shifts from the storm to the Savior. And as your focus remains on Him, fear begins to fade into the background. Prayer: God, I trust You with my salvation, but sometimes I struggle with trusting You with the details of my life.
