In this episode Mike, Rich, Steve and Amanda tackle seven new releases, including two Scott Adkins movies! As usual, click the links to see a trailer for each film. We kick off with the WW2 set PRISONER OF WAR (Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment) in which Scott Adkins is shot down over the Philippiines, captured by the Japanese and forced to fight for the commandant's entertainment. Scott's co-star in the Debt Collector films, Louis Mandylor, directs! A BREED APART (Signature Entertainment) sees a bunch of influences invited to a tropical island to help rescue some feral dogs. Its as dumb as it sounds, but is it entertaining? BONEFACE (High Fliers Films) takes the usual summer camp slasher scenario and turns it into a murder whodunnit... DEVIL IN THE DUST (Signature Entertainment) finds Guy Pearce having to help a mother and daughter trek across the old west to find a faith healer for the daughter, who may be possessed or a carrier for a deadly contagion... SCURRY (Signature Entertainment) is set during an alien invasion of sorts and focuses on two people trapped in underground tunnels... THE DROWNED (Vertigo Releasing) takes the premise of Reservoir Dogs and adds a supernatural element to it... DIABLO (Signature Entertainment) is our second Scott Adkins film, here teaming up with the awesome Marko Zaror and director Ernesto Díaz Espinoza for some mayhem in Colombia! Our Short Shot is FIRST SIGHT, a futuristic dating story with a dark twist. Click the link to see the whole 20 minute short! Our DTV Throwback is DOLLMAN VS DEMONIC TOYS - possibly the most cynical cash-in ever conceived. You can see it on Amazon Prime and other platforms. The propulsive read of the summer is here with Heather Birrell's novel, BORN, a novel whose premise is the question: What happens when an English teacher goes into labour during a Toronto high school lockdown? And everything that happens next is probably different from what you might expect from a polyphonic novel that is a life-affirming testament to community, care, and the social miracle that is the public school, informed by the award-winning writer Birrell's own experience as a teacher in Toronto. Pickle Me This is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In our conversation, Birrell and I go back to the start, to where we connected years ago as new mothers, soon becoming friends. And all these years later, it feels full-circle to be talking about a novel about labour and birth. And Birrell explains how BORN is about labour in other ways too, that it's an ode to caretakers, to the undervalued work in our society that's usual performed by women, and she tells me about the creative connections between BORN and George Saunders' LINCOLN IN THE BARDO, another novel by someone best known for their short stories, and another that takes place in a liminal space outside the bounds of life. What happens when an English teacher goes into labour during a Toronto high school lockdown?High school English teacher Elise loves teaching Shakespeare. She is also very pregnant. She's trapped in a classroom with her Grade 12 students during a lockdown. Anthony, the cause of the lockdown, is roaming the halls with a knife in search of some solace, consumed by thoughts of his best friend Samantha, who is in peril. Maria, the school's counselor, is second-guessing her decision to turn him in.As the lockdown drags on, Elise can no longer deny that she's going into labour. And she'll have to rely on the students to get her through: Shai-Anna and Faduma end up acting as midwives, and the others do what they can.In the same way the self shatters and sharpens when one is doing the hard work of giving birth, so does the narrative of the novel, with various people in the school picking up the threads of the story. With infinite empathy for all involved, Born explores the myriad pitfalls and utopian possibilities of the school system, motherhood, and caregiving, and the sometimes fraught, sometimes transcendent nature of the student-teacher relationship.Heather Birrell is the author of the novel Born, a poetry collection, Float and Scurry and two story collections, Mad Hope and I know you are but what am I?. As well as the mechanisms and mysteries of individual consciousness, Heather's writing is concerned with how we give care and exist in community. Her work has been honoured with the Gerald Lampert Award for poetry, the Journey Prize for short fiction and the Edna Staebler Award for non-fiction. She has been shortlisted for both National and Western Magazine Awards and Arc Magazine's Poem of the Year Award. Her poem “Wind” was longlisted for the CBC Poetry Prize in 2022. Her stories, essays, and poems have appeared in many North American journals and anthologies, including The New Quarterly, Toronto Noir, Descant, pinhole poetry, and The Malahat Review. Heather works as a high school teacher and creative writing instructor. She has spent extended periods in the Kingdom of Fife and the Isle of Lewis in Scotland but now lives in her hometown of Toronto with her mother, her husband, and their two daughters. In Who Moved My Cheese?, Dr. Spencer Johnson uses a simple allegory involving four characters (Sniff, Scurry, Hem, and Haw) who navigate a maze in search of “cheese” — a metaphor for what we want in life, such as a job, relationship, or health. The story centers on how each character reacts when the cheese is moved, reflecting the need to adapt to change. This narrative is eerily applicable to the current state of dental insurance — particularly how companies like Delta Dental operate. Dentists and patients alike are characters in this real-life maze, constantly trying to locate the “cheese” of quality oral health care. But the challenge is that insurers aren't just moving the cheese; they're changing the maze itself. The rules are always shifting: what procedures are covered, reimbursement rates, required pre-authorizations, and even what counts as “necessary” care. For providers committed to delivering the best, most advanced care, this inconsistency is not just frustrating — it's professionally and ethically compromising.Support the show
Damn, Chat GPT really flamed us this week:Imagine if a true crime documentary and Beavis and Butt-Head had a baby in a haunted house—that's about the vibe of this episode. “Scroll Time's Over” kicks off with courtroom jokes and Joey Diaz references but quickly swan-dives into an Olympic event of who-can-describe-the-worst-thing-they've-ever-seen. Spoiler: Ian wins by a landslide, again. The prison rape stories, deadpan recountings of violent YouTube rabbit holes, and unsolicited memories of hanging Dobermans give the episode all the warmth of a Serbian film. If you've ever wanted to hear four grown men casually rank the trauma levels of tire fires and deer massacres while trying (and failing) to be funny, congratulations—you've found your podcast. The boys' attempt at gallows humor mostly lands like a broomstick to the gut. Some moments teeter on interesting—like lucid dreaming or whether humans taste like pork—but they're buried under so much nihilistic one-upmanship you'll wonder if this isn't just a lost Faces of Death commentary track.Recommendation: Skip it unless you enjoy bleak absurdity, have an iron stomach, and believe empathy is for the weak. Otherwise, maybe just go outside. Touch grass. Hug a dog. Preferably a living one.

Chapter 1:Summary of Who Moved My Cheese"Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson is a motivational book that uses a parable to discuss how different people deal with change in their lives. The story involves four characters: two mice named Sniff and Scurry, and two little people, miniature humans named Hem and Haw, who all live in a maze and are in search of cheese, which represents happiness and success. At the beginning of the story, all four characters find a large cache of cheese at Cheese Station C and grow comfortable with its abundance. However, the cheese eventually runs out, and this is where their responses diverge. Sniff and Scurry, having anticipated this change since they noticed the dwindling supplies, quickly accept the loss and set out into the maze to find new cheese. On the other hand, Hem and Haw are shocked and unprepared. They initially remain at Cheese Station C, unable to accept that the cheese is gone.Haw eventually learns to deal with the situation better than Hem. After realizing that waiting for the cheese to reappear is futile, he ventures into the maze to find new cheese. Throughout his journey, Haw writes messages on the walls, such as "The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you find new cheese." These messages are lessons about embracing change, being adaptable, and having a positive attitude towards new experiences.Hem, however, refuses to leave the old cheese station and adapt to the change. He represents those who are resistant to change due to fear and stubbornness. In the end, Haw finds new cheese at Cheese Station N. He has learned that change is a natural and inevitable part of life and that success comes from adapting to change and moving on. The story concludes with Haw, hopeful that Hem may eventually find his way by following the messages left on the wall."Who Moved My Cheese?" is widely read in corporate and business environments to help employees and managers deal with change and to encourage a flexible and adaptive work culture.Chapter 2:The Theme of Who Moved My Cheese"Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson, M.D., is a motivational book that uses a parable to explore how different individuals deal with change in their lives. These characters live in a maze, where they search daily for cheese, which represents happiness, success, or fulfillment. Key Plot Points:1. Discovery of Cheese Station C: Initially, all four characters find a huge source of cheese at Cheese Station C. They become accustomed to this abundance and rely on it for their happiness and sustenance.2. The Cheese Disappears: One day, the characters arrive at Cheese Station C to find that all the cheese is gone. This sudden change reflects the inevitable shifts we experience in our personal and professional lives.3. Varied Reactions to Change:- Sniff and Scurry: These mice quickly adapt to the new situation. They do not overanalyze or lament the loss but instead immediately start looking for new cheese.- Hem and Haw: These humanlike characters react differently. Hem denies and resists the change, refusing to leave Cheese Station C, hoping that the cheese will return. Haw is initially hesitant but eventually realizes the need to adapt. 4. Haw Embarks on a New Journey: After much hesitation and spurred by hunger, Haw begins to search for new cheese, leaving behind Hem, who remains in denial. Throughout his journey in the maze, Haw learns to overcome his fears and adapt to change, understanding it is part of life.5. Finding New Cheese: Ultimately, Haw discovers a new cheese station, loaded with more cheese than he could have imagined. He meets Sniff and Scurry again, who had long since found this new source. Gena Scurry has dedicated her career to fostering human connection. She is a self-proclaimed introvert, and while she loves people, her alone time sustains her. Gena says she is quirky, and it takes a lot of effort to be social and be herself. Gena's formative years differed from most of the other kids in her Texas neighborhood. Crossing the border daily from her home, she attended a Montessori school in Mexico. Later, her thirst for adventure led her to take a year off from college and travel the world, camping and rock climbing. Gena loved rock climbing and traveling and was not sure what else she wanted to do with her life, so she worked hard outside of her classes to save money to support her trips. After completing her degree in Spanish, Gena embarked on her entrepreneurial journey with just $5 and a bicycle, teaching adults to speak Spanish. It started with one person asking her to teach them the language, and her business grew over the next 17 years, with a team of employees and contracts with large companies, which gave her steady revenue. Yet she felt terrified about income most of the time. Gena also got married and started a family during those years. Nine years ago, Gena went through a major life transition, a divorce. She began meditating and focused on the question, “What's next in my life?” The answer: “Build a game.” It felt right to her. Eventually, Gena created , a card deck-based game designed to create deeper connections between people. The game challenges players to ask deeper questions on a variety of topics, integrating random verbs to enhance listening skills. In this week's learn more about Gena's journey: Gena hosts monthly potlucks in her home and invites everyone to join in, embodying her mission to reconnect humanity with each game played. Originally designed as a bilingual board game, Gena tested it for years and determined it would be best to release an English version as a card deck initially. Learn more and connect with Gena here:
