As God’s people wait for Moses to come down from Mount Sinai, their sinful hearts overtake them and they make a golden calf to worship. God's response is both terrifying, and a warning to us all, as we live in a world filled with idols. Moses goes to the Lord in humility and asks Him to relent of His judgment on the people. In this text, we see a foreshadowing of what is to come. We are guilty of worshipping idols. Through a Mediator, God will relent of His wrath and show us mercy. What do you do when you think or know that God has told you something, but nothing happens? Do you wonder if you heard God wrong? Do you get worried that God got busy or distracted? Or are you tempted to take matters into your own hands?

Don't fall into idolatry... it's easier than you think. The story of the golden calf.
I didn’t pick this well know Biblical account because it related to anything going on today, but suddenly I see that it does. You see, there were people among the Israelites who were not satisfied with how things were, so they created a situation that seemed to demand urgent action and radical change. No surprise that the people went along with these changes even after the crises was revealed to be a hoax! Yes, this is in the Bible.

Part 19 of series on Exodus. This message explores Exodus 32. After all God had done, Israel still rebels. Through their story, we will explore why we rebel, what consequences come, and how to respond when our loved ones fall away from God.
The REDEMPTION sermon series is focused on teaching through the Book of Exodus through the Biblical, Historical, Theological, Christological, & Practical lens. The aim is to view the immense redemptive work of Jesus Christ in the past, the present, and the future.
While Moses was up on Mount Sinai receiving the Stone Tablets with the 10 Commandments and the book of the covenant, the people of Israel rebelled against God. The had Aaron build a calf of Gold to worship. God wanted to destroy Israel and start over with Moses but Moses reminded God of his promise. God punished those who refused to turn back to him by having them killed.
When Moses is up on Mt. Sinai, Aaron and the people make a golden calf and worship it. This teaches us a number of things about idolatry. The only cure for sin is to have a mediator step forward and make atonement.

Worshiping a golden calf feels remote and irrelevant at first blush, but the same propensity to create counterfeit gods is in every human heart, the same tendency to blame shift and minimize is common to all, and the need for a substitutionary sacrifice is universal.

Contentment is the key to freedom from idolatry. Contentment leads to coveting. Coveting causes us to seek out that which we feel we are lacking. That seeking motivates us to make idols out of the good things God has brought into our world. Just as Aaron used the gold that God had given the Israelites to make the golden calf, we use the good gifts of God to make idols to meet our wants and needs.

Israel's sin with the golden calf reveals our own tendency to fall back into sin when the going gets tough. We would rather have false gods we can control than the true God control us. And when we fall we need a mediator who will approach the wrath of God on our behalf.

028-Exodus 32:1-35 Pastor Phil Ballmaier Book of Exodus 9-21-16 Join us as Pastor Phil continues in the Book of Exodus. The Book of Genesis ended with the death of Joseph in Egypt but not before he made the children of Israel promise that when God delivered them out of Egypt, they would take his bones with them into the Promised Land. The Book of Exodus is the continuation of the Book of Genesis which is why the Hebrew text begins with the word “And”. The word ‘exodus’ means exit, and the theme of the book is deliverance. However you can’t have deliverance without a deliverer. And therefore the principle figure around which the book is built is God’s deliverer, Moses. God will use Moses to lead His people out of the bondage of Egypt just as He would someday use Jesus to lead His people out of the bondage of sin and death.
When Moses went to Mount Sinai to commune with God, the people of Israel sinned by making a false idol out of gold. And in their sinfulness, they forgot who God was and what He had done for them. In our sinfulness, believers today are still susceptible to these dangers. If we don't properly guard ourselves against such deceptive thinking, we can find ourselves in the same situation.
Should we follow a leader anywhere they say to go or are there restraints on us as followers in the Word of God?
