Send us a textWelcome back to Ashley & Liz's dystopian sci fi episode bonus series: The Hunger Games! We spend ½ of this episode playing the piano (yes, you read that right) and the other ½ convincing you to read this series. If that doesn't do it for you… we don't know what else you could want! If you've been following along and watched our “From 1984 to Hunger Games” dystopian themes in media and literature episode then you know we're fascinated with everything about this genre and needed to delve into this discussion! It just happens to be a BIG bonus that Ashley had never read it before. The debate currently on the book talk table is whether or not books (and the act of reading) are inherently political. We'd encourage anyone who has a doubt in their mind to read this series… with themes like media control, a totalitarian regime, and rebellion, it's hard to see how it ISN'T political.Episode 2 covers book 2: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star reviews. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences, discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, the necessary Gale vs. Peeta debate, and end with a fun piece of Hunger Games trivia. New franchise alert! Two movies in one episode? Can it be done? Turns out, yes it can, quite easily. After some unforeseen issues and delays we've decided to truncate our Hunger Games series into 3 episodes so as not to mess with our extremely tight and rigid schedule. And if you have a problem with that go fly a kite and also go fuck yourself.Joining us to talk all things Hunger Games this week is special guest Will Gertler... will he survive the whole episode... or will he be sacrificed around 30 minutes in? You'll have to listen to find out!The lads have been dreading this series. It's YA fiction babyshit, right? Not for cool adult cinephiles. Surely there isn't much here to like... or is there? Does Hollywood Hack Gary Ross have the juice? Or is he juiceless and Other Hollywood Hack Francis Lawrence have what it takes? These fascinating questions (and more) will be answered.Friend of the pod Mary Jane suggested this series and she will be joining us next week for our mega double special Mockingjay episode. See you then!

After the huge success of the first Hunger Games an adaptation of the sequel book was inevitable. So a year later in 2013 Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen in a bigger budgeted follow up that asks the question, what if Hunger Games but more? With great new inclusion like Phillip Seymor Hoffman and...I dunno a poison fog or whatever this entry turned out to be the biggest box office return for the series before the decline. From beyond the veil (of their respective vacations), Matt and Eric dig for fire in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE, the tremendous follow up to the first film that raises the stakes and sparks the revolution. Plus...some other things. We can't remember. It's pre-recorded, yo.

We're catching up with Katniss Everdeen again only this time, she is not volunteering as tribute. Jennifer Lawrence finds out that as soon as you get on President Snow's bad side, you buy yourself another one way ticket to The Hunger Games. Don't worry, local strong man warrior Peeta Mellark is sure to keep her safe this second time around with his greatest defense: cake decorating. We cover many things in this episode from Woody Harrelson's wig to Stanley Tucci's terrifying white chompers. Tune in and decide whether you're team Josh Hutcherson or team Liam Hemsworth.

PARTY PLEASER: Melanie and Melvin continue their summarization of The Hunger Games franchise following their previous party pleaser on The Hunger Games! This time, Katniss and the Hunger-Games-Gang is pulled into another Hunger Games! Who could have expected that? Melanie and Melvin are ready to pick-apart the political intrigue of Panam and question whether Katniss and Peta will ever stand a chance against President Snow! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 23-minutes discussing different ways to engage movies (phone, tv, theater) and hilarious-or-terrible movie theater experiences. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire succeeds in being a sequel that increases the scope of the world, characters, and everything in between. Despite some of the improvements, parts of Catching Fire essentially re-do the material of The Hunger Games which got a little tiresome for Melvin who wanted to see some new experiences in the Hunger Games universe. During the transition between outside life and the beginning of the Hunger Games the aspect ratio becomes much fuller. This likely helped engross audience members into the passive disorientation of going from clinical science-fiction décor to the outside survivalist environment. It's a Young-Adult trope to have the protagonist vie between two romantic partners, but in the world of the Hunger Games it always feels like it's a matter of whether or not Katniss will end up with Peta, not whether Katniss will end up with Peta or Gale.Recommendations:John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) (Movie)Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) (Movie)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks!
