In this series, we will look at the women of Jesus' line, and in particular, in the final weeks leading to Christmas, we will look at those named in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1. Each week, we will see how God lifts the heads of the downtrodden and uses those the world would never assume would be used. Scripture Reading – Ruth 1:1-22 Gospel Reading – Acts 10
Scripture Reading: Ruth 3 … 'Redeemer' in the Old Testament … nearest relative … "kinsman redeemer" … Hebrew word - goel …. the concept of the 'goel' included the notion of protecting, saving, sustaining, guarding a family member, usually with some purchase involved. …. Lev 25:25,26 - redemption of property …. Lev 25:47-49 - redemption of people …. Num 35:16-19 - avenging a murder …. Deut 25:5-10 - law of levirate marriage, though the word 'goel' is not mentioned in this section. Levirate marriage is not the same thing as the work of the 'goel,' but the principle of legally caring for the nearest relative is connected to the story of Ruth. …. in Ruth - 2:20; 3:9,12,13; 4:1,3,4,6,8,14 In Ruth, Boaz is the second nearest relative to Naomi's family. When Naomi sells a parcel of land belonging to her deceased husband, Elimelech, Boaz buys (redeems) the land for the family and marries Naomi's daughter-in-law, Ruth, who is legally connected to the land. In the Old Testament, God is referred to as Redeemer . . . Job 19:25; Psa 19:14; Isa 44:6,24; 47:4; 54:8 (13 times in Isaiah 40-66). In the New Testament Christians have been redeemed by the person and work of Christ . . . Rom 3:24; Gal 3:13; Col 1:14; Titus 2:13,14; Heb 9:12. As our Redeemer, Christ, saves, protects, sustains us for all eternity.
Scripture Reading: Ruth 2:1-23
Scripture Reading: Ruth 1 During the time of the judges in Israel, God's providence was on display in a wondrous way, in order to show His faithfulness to bring the promised Messiah. In the process, God displays His grace to a family in Bethlehem. He does this through the everyday ebb and flow of life and not through some spectacular miracle. The book of Ruth is a story of ordinary people in ordinary people in ordinary circumstances. It is a story of hardship and heartache, of love and fidelity, of determination and the sovereignty of God, governing the affairs of human existence. The main purpose of this book is not to describe love and friendship, nor to illustrate Old Testament laws of marriage and heritage … though the details of this story does both. The primary, immediate purpose of the book of Ruth is to display the invisible hand of God, at work in the darkest of times, in the most ordinary of circumstances, to bring about the good of God's people. The ultimate purpose of Ruth is to shine a spotlight on the eternal glory of Christ. What happens in this story is part of the chain of events which will lead to the birth of Jesus, from the tribe of Judah and in the royal line of King David. God weaves it all together in a tapestry of pain and pleasure, heartbreak and hope. The Almighty is the main character in the book of Ruth.

Scripture Reading: Ruth 4:18-22 Perez was the father of Hezron . . . Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David. Ruth 4:18-22 The first mention of David in the Bible comes in the book of Ruth. David's story was part of God's much bigger story. Through the lives of David and many others, God was shaping and molding a people for himself. God called men and women into a relationship of grace, responsibility, and adventure. The story of Ruth included disappointment, death, and discouragement. But as God worked in the lives of Ruth and Boaz, encouragement, joy, and hope began to shine through. Ruth and Boaz became ancestors of David. Family connections anchored David's life, making his family story an important part of his identity. As Eugene Peterson noted, “The genealogy shows that the story of Ruth and Boaz wasn't simply a small love story into which they had accidentally fallen; rather it was a sprawling love story of epic proportions. For through the union of Ruth and Boaz came David” (Conversations). Genealogies show us, in part, how God works in the world. Jesse told his children the stories of Perez, Hezron, Ram . . . Ruth and Boaz, and Obed as reminders of God's faithfulness throughout the generations. And the thread of those stories went farther back to a couple named Abraham and Sarah, whom God had called into a relationship with himself (Genesis 12). This was part of the inheritance David had even before he was born. Lord and God, thank you for your faithfulness and for calling me into a relationship with you as part of your story of life for us all. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING: Ruth 2:1-3, 8-11, 4:13-17 In the enterprise of divine providence, favor knows when and how to locate a person. The Lord is ceaselessly at work to make ‘all things work for good with those who love him.' Ruth was a widow who chose to leave her homeland (Moab) and follow her mother-in-law to Bethlehem in Judah. Finding herself in a foreign land, she chose to work so as not to be a burden to her mother-in- law. She opted to work in the fields as a gleaner. As destiny would have it, she came to that part of...Article Link
