Relying on God
Relying on God
Romans 8 is the chapter of Christian assurance. The chapter begins with “no condemnation.” There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. No condemnation now or any time in the future. God’s verdict of acquittal in justification is a verdict that is irreversible. Then, at the end of the chapter, we find that there is “no separation.” There is no separation from the persisting love of God which is in Christ — no condemnation and no separation from the love of Christ. Paul is clearly ministering to people who needed that kind of assurance. In light of the circumstances and situations of the Roman believers, there appears to have risen some questions about the sufficiency of God to handle such a threatening world. Paul responds with more than just general words of encouragement. He brings them to the height of Christian doctrine and truth in the love of God demonstrated in Christ. Some of you are facing circumstances and situations that are leading you to a similar place of insecurity and fear. Is God totally sufficient for my needs and situations? When no one else seems to understand, how can I be certain that God loves me and that I can trust Him? I pray that you will join us this weekend as Paul seeks to plumb the depths of God’s love demonstrated towards us in Christ. — Pastor Chad McDonald

Sunday, May 5, 2024 - Today marks the end of our study on "Identity" as described in Romans 8. Over the past 5 weeks, we have explored this topic in depth, and it is fitting to conclude with a message titled "The Identity of a Victor." To truly live out our identity, it is important first to accept the loving forgiveness of Jesus and then make daily choices that demonstrate our ever-growing love for Him by obeying His every command. As we are adopted into God's family, we also join Christ in His suffering to share in His glory. We eagerly anticipate the final step in our adoption when we receive our glorified bodies, free from sin and temptation. This is not a distant dream but a joyous promise that fills us with hope and excitement. We can celebrate this amazing grace as we worship and study today, knowing that nothing in this world can take away the promise of eternal life we have received through Christ.

Earlier in Romans 8 Paul declares four spiritual freedoms we enjoy because of Christ: freedom from judgment; from defeat; from discouragement; and from fear. We can have a fear of losing God’s love but we are secure in the love of Christ. Paul gives us five immutable facts: God is for us; Christ died for us; God has justified us; Jesus and the Holy Spirit intercede for us; Jesus loves us. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. There is no condemnation, obligation, frustration or separation.

Everyone loves to win. Some competitors take it to the extreme. Others are so paralyzed by fear of failure and losing that they never even compete. In Romans 8, the Apostle Paul wraps up the greatest chapter of the Bible by looking at the victory believers have in Christ. It is a victory that is assured and never in doubt.

Romans 8:31-39 is Paul’s conclusion, not just to the first thirty verses of chapter 8, but to the train of thought he’s been developing since chapter 5. He’s thoroughly explained the status and blessings that belong to those who are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus, apart from the Law, and he concludes now with words of hope and encouragement regarding the love of God.
