“We have this mantra inside our company, which is ‘We're 1% there'”, says Shawn Ram. “And because our vision continues to expand, we never get 2% there. It breeds a different level of commitment, diligence and vigour.”Coalition's Head of Insurance shares his journey to joining the founding team of the San Francisco-based cyber insurtech and the company's continued drive towards expansion around the globe. He discusses Coalition's approach to data collection and assessing policyholders' vulnerabilities. “We track how often there's vulnerabilities in software, what technology isn't patched appropriately, any lookalike domains or any compromise. It's the same view generally that an adversary would have.”Shawn gives an insight in to Coalition's ‘remote-first' culture, maintaining values as company scales and the opportunities for high-performing talent. “We desire to remain humble, we sweep the floors, we're authentic”, says Shawn. “When you build a new operation where the individuals that are being hired in country have no background, no experience with the Coalition culture, it's critical that you get that right.”He concludes by emphasizing the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people. “Evaluate the mission, evaluate the vision, evaluate the people. And be honest with yourself.”Connect with Shawn on LinkedIn or find out more about opportunities at Coalition. This episode of the Insurance Coffee House Podcast was first published on 27 September 2022Podcast hosted by Nick Hoadley, CEO, Insurance Search, the Executive Search Consultancy for growing Insurance and Insurtech businesses across the globe. To discuss identifying & attracting the very best talent to your team or being a podcast guest, reach out to Nick via nick.hoadley@insurance-search.com or connect on LinkedInCopyright Insurance Search 2023 – All Rights Reserved.

“The world is changing. Technology is driving economic proliferation around the world. With that increase in technology at scale comes tremendous risk”, says Shawn. Head of Insurance Shawn Ram, shares his transition from Aon to joining the founding team of rapidly expanding Coalition, the San Francisco-based cyber insurtech. “What really drives our value is the fact that our insurance is active. Alongside our cyber product, we provide active risk assessment”, explains Shawn. Having recently raised $250m in a Series F funding round, led by Allianz and supported by Kinetic Partners, Shawn shares the Coalition's approach to data collection and assessing policyholders' vulnerabilities.    “We track how often there's vulnerabilities in software, what technology isn't patched appropriately, any lookalike domains or any compromise. It's the same view generally that an adversary would have.” With Coalition currently establishing a UK presence and with further expansion in to APAC planned for 2023,  Shawn outlines how the business is aiming to double its headcount over the next 12 months as well maintain its culture amidst scaling. “We desire to remain humble, we sweep the floors, we're authentic”, says Shawn.  “When you build a new operation where the individuals that are being hired in country have no background, no experience with the coalition culture, it's critical that you get that right.” Shawn gives an insight in to Coalition's ‘remote-first' culture, the opportunities for high-performing talent and his experience of transitioning from large corporate to tech start-up. “There's something that happens in a start-up environment. There's no alternative, it's like success or failure. There's no middle ground. As a company or as an individual, it breeds a different level of commitment, diligence and vigour.” Shawn concludes with offering advice to anyone seeking to join a tech-enabled business. “Evaluate the mission, evaluate the vision, evaluate the people. The people you surround yourself with are critical. And be honest with yourself.  Do you have the attributes needed to grind in a start-up environment? Are you comfortable with the pace and speed in which it operates?" As I prepare for an annual photography gig I have in the next few weeks I am reminded of just how similar putting the pieces back together after losing someone is just like putting together a photo shoot. The event I'm photographing is an annual event I've done for 4 or 5 years now and even though it's different each year, there are certain elements that stay the same. The program is the same, put the speakers as well as the attendees are different. In grief there is sadness whenever someone dies, but the hurt is different because the relationship with each person who passes is different. Even if I try to mirror the same environment for photo sessions that I'd like to be the same, there are still subtle differences based on weather, location and other factors. Regardless of the situation, however, I'm constantly making adjustments to get the best pictures possible. In life as you try to get back to some sense of putting the pieces back together, how do you adjust to situations that have you spiraling out of control? Last week I had the honor of being interviewed on Dr. Joshua Black, Phd and Shawn Ram’s Grief Dreams podcast.  Dr. Black and Shawn really seam to be living out their passion helping so many heal from their grieving through providing a platform to discuss the dreams people have of loved one’s and beloved pet’s that have died. These two young Canadians and many of the guests that they have on their podcast, through their grief journey have stumbled upon the secret of living out one’s passion, of living out one’s vocation — divine calling — in allowing their grief journey to transform their lives by helping others in their journey. On their podcast, I had a chance discuss my own grief journey and grief dreams, a little bit about relics and their veneration in the catholic tradition, this podcast Spei Lumina and a little bit about Henry Corbin’s work regarding the Imaginal Mundi and how it has influenced my own attempts in this podcast of providing a praxis for laying out the basics of imaginal prayer putting it to work in helping me and others transform our lives by reflecting Divine light and hope throughout the cosmos. It always encourages me when I learn about and experience first hand young people like Dr. Black and Shawn Ram whose souls are on fire and burning with that zeal that comes when you are actively pursuing and living out your passion, your vocation, your Divine calling.  Vocation comes from the Latin word vocare or “to call” and it refers to God’s call for each and every one of us, not just for those called to ministry or religious life, but for all of creation. Dr. Black’s research on grief dreams and his work with Shawn on the podcast and the lives they touch are indeed a great reflection of that wondrous process that occurs in the imaginal realm where, as Henri Corbin describes, “the Active Imagination is Creative Imagination and exploration of the subtle realm requires participation between the human and divine and is at once discovery and creation.” Henri Corbin, in his work Alone with the Alone: Creative Imagination in the Sufism of Ibn ‘Arabi,  describes prayer as “the highest form, the supreme act of the Creative Imagination.  For prayer is not a request for something; it is the expression of a mode of being, a means of existing and causing to exist… The organ of Prayer is the heart, the psychospiritual organ, with it’s concentration of energy, it’s himma.  Prayer is a “creator” of vision.” Inspired by Dr. Black and Shawn Ram and so many others who are not merely living by the ways and means society programs us, manipulates us to live, in pursuit of material gain only, in a reactionary or rote fashion, but who live out their passion and meaning in life and in so doing reflect a greater spark of the Divine, of hope in the world, I thought an imaginal prayer exercise using quotes from Hebrew and Christian scripture and from the Sufi mystic Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, regarding wisdom, the soul, and passion would inflame passion and purpose and hope and meaning in each of us growing in our practice of imaginal prayer.

Last year I did a special episode with Joshua Black and Shawn Ram of the Grief Dreams podcast (griefdreams.ca) and it turned out so nice that I wanted to do it again. Joshua is researching grief dreams as a PhD. student at Brock University in Ontario, Canada his co-host Shawn walks us through the deaths of our fathers and how we've handled, or plan to handle our losses in the future. It was nice to chat and get a different perspective on how people deal with their grief journey and maybe store some of their techniques in coping with grief away just in case you need to try something new along your grief journey. A lot has happened this week! I have been interviewed by the team of Grief Dreams Podcast (https://griefdreamspodcast.podbean.com/e/episode-18-grief-dreams-podcast/). I had a great time discussing my grief recovery process with Joshua Black and Shawn Ram. After delaying my announcement about new things coming to the podcast, I decided to tell the world that I'm interviewing people on this show... next week I'll share my interview / conversation with Joshua Black. We'll be talking about this grief journey, and how dreams inspired his research about grief related dreams. You don't want to miss it. This week, I reflect on how I might con keep people alive (through memories) even though the physical person I used to me able to see, touch and interact with are no longer here... memories are very powerful things! If you have been inspired to go great things because of or in spite of your grief (i.e. become a bereavement councilor, created a non-profit organization, written a book, etc.)  I want to talk to you about your grief recovery process.
