And maybe we're going to talk about this a little bit more, but I'm interested in what Joshua can tell me about his view and his research about it. If you haven't heard of Joshua, don't worry because in today's episode, I'm going to ask him all the questions that you might interested in as well. Let's see where this takes us today. What does it mean when you dream of a deceased loved one? Grief dreams evolve in many ways to help you deal with your grief and loss. Grief dreams can provide you with comfort, hope, and even answers to questions you may have. Grief dreams are unique and don't end when you have stopped grieving. [11:30] Why do some of us have grief dreams, and others don't have them when grieving? [13:21] Dr. Joshua's findings on factors that predict dreaming with the deceased [15:03] How to increase your dream recall rate if you are interested [18:29] Why do we have positive or negative grief dreams, and what do they represent in your waking life? [22:50] How do dreams help in the grieving process and showcase the blocks we are going through? [30:07] The power of being honest and where dreams fit in our emotions and grief. "Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live". (Norman Cousins) Not allowing joy to die within you when you suffer a major loss of a loved one is vital for an optimistic, positive life view. Yet finding joy again can be hard, seemingly impossible. We increasingly experience the death of friends and family as we age. The better we can decrease the stress of these losses, the less impact this will have on our aging trajectory says today's guest. Joshua Black, PhD, is one of the world's leading academic experts in grief dreams. He is a grief researcher, speaker, consultant, and host of the Grief Dreams Podcast. His work focuses on dreams and continuing bonds after loss. Previous guests have discussed ways of healing after loss or traumas, becoming resilient, and accepting the importance of self-care as you care for others. What does it mean to us when we dream about a person in our life who has died? Sometimes we are working to understand the loss or move forward from it. Sometimes we are plagued by the need to know that they are ok. Sometimes we hope for just one more moment, one more time to feel as if they are with us. Whether our dreams are positive or negative, they are significant. Joshua Black had a dream after his father died that changed his grief. His dream was comforting and led him to feel more at peace with his loss. This led to a deep desire to understand grief dreams. He changed directions, getting a PhD based on research and writing into grief dreams. He originated a podcast, Grief Dreams, to explore with others they dreams. His own experience led him to a passion for the subject and has made him a world recognized expert in the field.

Turning Season: News & Conversations on Our Adventure Toward a Life-Sustaining Society
Have you dreamt of a loved one, after they passed away? Has that dream stuck with you ever since? Dr. Joshua Black has had that kind of dream -- and heard thousands of those dreams from others. He's devoted his academic research to these "grief dreams" and to continuing bonds after many types of loss (including prenatal loss and pet loss). I thought it might be heavy or tearful, talking for an hour about dreams of deceased loved ones, but instead I found this conversation to be full of life. I appreciate Joshua's combination of the methodical, discerning mind of a researcher with compassionate curiosity and willingness to sit in the mysterious space of dreams.Click Play to hear me and Joshua talk about:How dreams began to matter to him because of one powerful dream, after a childhood of rejecting dreamsHis own grief dream of his father, which brought the color back into his life after a period of depressionOne of the most common questions he hears: why am I NOT dreaming of my deceased loved one?Across cultures and belief systems, what does and doesn't vary about grief dreamsHow common these dreams are; and how common it is for them to involve the presence of love and continuing bonds"Negative dreams" where the deceased is dying or ill, or chasing or wanting to harm the dreamerHow important it is to understand the culture and viewpoint of the person who's had the dream in order to provide a safe space Why it's best to be very cautious about labeling dreams as "visitations," or naming criteria for a dream to be considered a visitationAnd more! This episode is my conversation with Dr. Joshua Black who is arguably the world's leading expert on the topic of GRIEF DREAMS. It was so eye opening for me. We all dream but dreams are so complicated… and no surprise, especially grief dreams! This episode is riveting to the end!Find all ways to CONNECT with Dr. Joshua Black HERE on his websiteJoshua spent his young life believing he was destined to become a school teacher - great pay and pensions were the reasoning he had been conditioned to that choice. After his father passed very suddenly he had a life changing dream and found him self dream research but he was having trouble finding a university to do this type of study at. For him that changed when ironically it was a professor of psychological trauma specialist who agreed to supervise him through his doctorate studies. Now his work is a marriage of both - studying grief dreams! He discusses the different types of dreams & their purposes. Listen as he talks about how grief after the sudden loss of his father caused the “color to leave his world” and how a vivid dream 3 months in to his grief is what suddenly brought it back. He explains that he didn't know what had happened but he knew it was extremely profound…Sending him down a path towards his life's work. He talks about negative dreams after trauma and dream re-scripting which just fascinated me so very much!! He shares specific dreams of loved ones after the loss of their loved one by suicide. [SENSITIVE CONTENT WARNING]Do you dream of your loved one & are you glad that you do or burdened by it? OR ...are you part of the 10% of people who don't recall any dreams? Do you keep a grief journal? I would love to know! Can our dreams help us heal OR keep us stuck?? Dreams are SO relevant to our mental state/emotional health in the roles they play contributing to mental health issues, indicating them and also in helping heal them YET so many therapies do NOT even address our dreams!!
