In 1999, MTV's Chris Connelly interviewed Drew Barrymore and made an insightful observation about her career. He noted that many of the characters she has portrayed derive their strength from not having parents. Interestingly, Drew can also relate to this theme on a personal level. In this episode, we explore Drew's connection to being an orphan, as well as the list of her characters who fit this description. From Casey Brodsky in Irreconcilable Differences to Dylan in Charlie's Angels, Drew has played a diverse array of characters defined by their lack of parental figures. Join our Patreon! Sometimes you're scrolling on social media and you happen upon a post that halts your mindless scrolling. Something someone writes just tugs on your heartstrings and you can't help but reach out. Sometimes that person is someone you haven't seen or talked to in years but when they post about grief, loss, and the hardships of being a parentless parent, you reach out and ask them about their story - their strength. That is what happened to our host, @katia.lindor, as she spotted Allie's post on Instagram on Mother's Day. Please welcome our amazing guest, Allison White, as she shares part of her life story with us. At a young age, Allie has suffered through more losses than most experience in a lifetime, and as a new mom, she finds herself uncovering new facets of that grief. She uses her time with us on this episode to not only share her story, but also to offer some sage advice to other parentless parents or motherless mothers out there. Because, as Allie says, sometimes all you need is to hear someone else's story to know that you're not alone, that your grief will ebb and flow, and that sometimes you can even see your mother in your daughter's eyes.We hope you enjoy the show! Everyone faces circumstances that leave them feeling helpless and defeated. You may even believe you won't ever reach your goals. But what if you changed your perspective and started asking, "Why not me?" I had the opportunity to speak with Sun Yong Kim-Manzolini about how she maintains an attitude of gratitude even through the most trying situations. Growing up in an orphanage isn't ideal; some even compare it to what POWs experience. Parentless and unable to walk, Sun Yong dreamed of being adopted and making it to America. And she never gave up hope. Here's how this "Little Nurse" overcame her fears and embraced every opportunity—one step at a time. In this episode, Sun Yong explores how these pieces of the Do The Thing formula guide her journey: Educating yourself Mindset Overcoming fear Risk assessment Changing your perspective Inspired by Sun Yong's story? 71, Widows Aren't Invited Out on Saturday NightsSusan Kendal comes to us from Canada. She has experienced many deaths in her own family in a short amount of time. Susan's father suffered from heart disease for over 10 years. In her own words, "I've lost my husband, my father, my brothers." Susan explores being a widow, fatherless, and navigating life as it is now. Susan is now a grief advocate. She wants to help others learn about death, grief, and everything in between. Susan has helped host Death Cafes online, and has started Evolve Beyond Grief to help shatter death taboo. Speaking isn't the only way Susan is giving back to the community. She is an author and has several pieces available, linked below. Her most recent collaborative work is found in the 3rd link, a book called Gathering at the Doorway: An Anthology of Signs, Visits, and Messages from the Afterlife. 69, I Did the Best I Could As an only child who was born on her dad's 40th birthday, Dani spent 9 years with her best friend. Dani fondly recalls her dad, Bob, pulling her out of Kindergarten to watch track practice for the Indianapolis 500. Now, the race is a family staple and Dani looks forward to gathering with her uncles each May to watch. After Bob passed, Dani had 3 more years with her mom, Linda. They spent most of those years battling Linda's cancer while grieving. Dani was by her mothers side when she left this Earth. She was then forced to navigate life as a Parentless twelve year old. As a byproduct of being Parentless, Dani went to live with her Uncle Dick and Aunt Lila. As if losing one set of parents isn't enough, Dani would eventually experience the loss of her aunt and uncle by the time she was 27. Dani discusses her family, kissing the bricks, divorce, heavy lifting, her job as a health coach, not having an emergency contact, and so much more. Dani's Advice to her younger self: "Sit in the sadness. It's not going to last forever, but it will feel a lot longer if you don't do it now." David's not afraid to share his tips as both a griever and a grief counselor. 61, Homicide Loss - LVM ADVNTGE Don't let the LOSS take over your MIND, use it to your ADVNTGE. Rebecca Benny was 17 and in high school the day she had to gather her friends and tell them her mom had been killed. She was closer to her father than her mother at the time, and she has been left with the task of figuring out her complicated relationship with her mother now as a motherless daughter. Besides gathering her friends that day to tell them the news, it wasn't typical of Rebecca to speak about her mother, Luz V Minda. Today she's 24 and has started a podcast in order to voice her own story and to be a voice for others experiencing homicide grief. Join Rebecca in her very first episodes and travel with her on her literal journey from the dark to the light. Rebecca began sharing her story from a couch in a dark room. 13 episodes later, she has started to show her face and has just released her first True Survivor Series sharing other homicide loss survivor's stories. Cara's mother was her person. Cara said she knew in her heart that her mom was going to die when she heard that she was going to have a daughter. Unfortunately, her parents never got to meet her children, so Cara has been navigating life as a parentless parent. Cara is the woman she is today and she is able to be the mom she is today because of her mom. 52, Dad, How Do I? Rob Kenney, founder of the Dad, How Do I? YouTube channel shares his life journey. Rob is the second youngest of 8 children. His mother suffered from mental illness and alcoholism, and his dad chose to leave his family when Rob was 14. This was a crucial time for Rob as a teenager, and his family structure deeply impacted his life and what he is doing today. On his channel and in his new book, Dad, How Do I?: Practical "Dadvice" for Everyday Tasks and Successful Living, Rob shares tips and tricks he has learned over the years. Rob proudly says, "I have 80 year old kids!" What Rob has to offer applies to all ages, and anyone that may need that extra "Dadvice". Rob eventually re-connected with his father, but was never able to have a deep, meaningful conversation with him. Today, as a father, he makes sure that he and his son are having meaningful conversations. Rob learned the art of forgiveness through his life, and during a fishing trip with his father when he was 50, he was able to tell his dad that he had forgiven him. Rob's dad died when he was 87, and his mother passed away as well. Rob did not have a close relationship with his mother, who died when she was 58. Rob now advocates for mental health help for everyone and his goal is to remove the stigma that often comes with mental illness. 44, Thank You, My Boi Son. Brother. Grandson. Motivational Speaker. Weight loss and elliptical aficionado. The list could go on and on. Scott Greenhut was the last living person in his immediate family at 33. He lost his mom, Harriet, when he was 12, his dad when he was 31 and his sister when he was 33. Once Scott's dad passed away, he was able to start the journey to better his own health, something his dad had been on him about for most of his life. Since changing his life, Scott has created #PleaseJustStart. He wants others to get out of their comfort zone, try something new, and to really live NOW while we can. In Scott's own words: Since December 2017, I have lost 110 pounds and kept it off. I went from 268 to 158, as a result of this I have dramatically reversed the effects of my sleep apnea. I made a goal for myself to do my Elliptical 365 days in a row - I ended up doing 370. I want to inspire the world that you don't have to be defined by your circumstances, and to start something you've always wanted to do... #PleaseJustStart Scott's advice: Don't wait for something negative to happen in your life for you to make the positive change you always think about. 41, Follow Your Shot Tom Biddulph, creator of Good Grievings, discusses the many losses in his life, but mainly speaks of those closest to him. Tom will be 40 shortly, and he has lost his sister and both his parents. Tom's mom Cathy passed away when he was 18, essentially leaving Tom to fulfill the mother role in his home for his younger sister. He ensured the bills were paid and there was food in the house. Grief was not talked about when Tom's mom and sister passed away, both in his family and just in general. Tom has since found the grief community and now just does what feels right, when it comes to his blog and his grief work. Gene, Tom's dad, is now more fatherly in the spirit world. Tom mentions that Gene was a huge influence on his work with Good Grievings, as Gene didn't seem to show or deal with his grief, and his body ended up paying the tole. Tom shares about the raw pain he felt all over again three months after his father's death, when his family was finally allowed to come together due to COVID-19 restrictions. Tom is married and the dad of two girls. He uses each day as a chance to be the dad he didn't quite have in the living world. Tom's advice: Acknowledge it, accept it, and feel it. 39, I'm Still Here Miki is a grief long-hauler. She lost her mother Amy when she was 13. Her mom was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer when Miki was 11, and they spent the next several years fighting and going through treatments. Even though Miki's mom was sick, no one in the family discussed or thought about the fact that her mom might not survive. So in a way, Miki's loss was very sudden, and definitely flipped her teenage world upside down. Miki took some time before coming to terms with this thing called grief. Now that she is married and a bit older, she has really been doing some work on herself, and because of this, she is able to bring many things to the grief community. Miki is a grief musician, author, and hosts her own weekly show, The Healing Half. We discussed the release of Miki's newest song at the time, Light a Candle For Me, and now that some time has passed since we spoke, she has just released another new song, A Cold Dark Room. Be sure to check out her music, and the great things available on her website! Miki's advice: All loss is hard. Don't do yourself the disservice of comparing your grief to anyone else's. 36, No Room for Grace "Ya know, pal...." Tylor Montgomery's grandpa spoke these words often to Tylor, in a voice and with a manner that Tylor can duplicate well, by his own admission. Tylor's grandma and grandpa, Lois and Bruce, raised him for a significant amount of his life, and he considered them his parents. His mother and father were not in the picture. During this time, Tylor was the perfect Baptist, attending services, going to Bible College, you name it, Tylor was there. He got quite the imprint of Christianity from his grandparents. Once, a medium told Tylor that if he finds pennies in his apartment, that was his grandfather showing up, in part due to Bruce's love of the song "Pennies in Heaven". Tylor gives us his perspective on the ever after, and remembers the lessons he learned from his grandparents during their lives. Tylor talks about so many things in our interview - there wasn't room to fit it all in here! If you'd like to hear the rest, you can head over to the Patreon link listed below to get the juicy bits for free! Tylor's take away: Try to find some kind of ritual that helps you with remembering them in a positive way, but won't turn into an unhealthy obsession. 35, Danny Boy "Keep doin' your thing." This was just one of the pieces of advice that Mingo Aranda's mom, Chris, told him in their last serious talk. She was referring to Mingo's black horse, and his love for the family horse racing empire. She had several other requests for him, which pushed Mingo to be the tough one for his family, and that attitude of grit and resilience shows here as Mingo shares his story with us. Mingo Rey Aranda speaks with host Derek, and the episode originally aired on The Elkhart Tapes, a podcast about those from Elkhart, Kansas. The Aranda family lost several family members in a relatively small amount of time. We join Mingo and Derek as they discuss how the Aranda cousins banded together for each other during a time a great loss for all.
