I am Nick Parker and once again I am joined by The Historic Browning’s Liesl Hays. LIESL: Each week, we'll take a few minutes to give you the news, happenings, and events around Lee's Summit. NICK: Visitors are invited to explore the new Downtown Sculpture Walk. The new outdoor public art exhibit will be on display through March 2021 and features artists from across the country. The project, led by the Lee’s Summit Arts Council, City of Lee’s Summit Cultural Arts Department and Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street is planning for a rotation of sculptures each spring. The six sculptures currently on display were selected from a national call for artists and juried by members of the Arts Council and Downtown Main Street. LIESL: A section of Southwest Murray Road south of Southwest Third Street is set to close tomorrow, June 30, and will remain closed for approximately 12 weeks for water line and road construction. NICK: In a shift from last week’s announcement about virtual graduations, the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District announced Tuesday afternoon it had reached an agreement with Sporting Kansas City and Children’s Mercy Park in Wyandotte County, Kan. to hold live in-person commencement ceremonies on July 26. Programs include: Architectural and Mechanical 3D CADD for young adults age 15 to 18+. Black Rocket Computer Science Online Programs for ages 8 to 14 including video game design and animation, inventing, programming, coding and YouTube content creation. Lee’s Summit metal artist Dave Eames has created ‘Infinite Harvest,’ a colorful, 11-foot-tall representation of a large bushel basket as a gateway piece to the Summit Orchards development located at Chipman and Ward roads near the Missouri Innovation Campus. NICK: Following guidance from the Jackson County Health Department, the Lee’s Summit R7 School District announced last week its post-poned graduation ceremony for the class of 2020 will be held virtually on July 25. The video commencement will be held for Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit North, Lee’s Summit West and Summit Ridge Academy graduates. Ceremony times will be announced at a later date. LIESL: As with so many other events, Special Olympics Missouri pivoted its Summer games to a virtual format this year. Eight students from the LSR7 School District earned honors at the games. NICK: Five principals and assistant principals from the LSR7 School District have filed discrimination lawsuits in the Circuit Court of Jackson County. Filing the suits are Heather Kenney, Jodi Mallette, Brooke Morehead, Stacy Orf and Beth Ratty. LIESL: Public art projects continue to pop up around the community. In addition to sculptures in downtown and at some of the City’s parks, a new photo project has been unveiled outside the Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street offices in the south alley off Third Street. Inspired by a project in Joplin, Mo, the We Are Lee’s Summit projects features hundreds of photos of Local residents using their own words to describe their place in our community. NICK: The Greater Lee’s Summit Healthcare Foundation has launched a limited, matching-donation fundraiser to support local nonprofits in the fight against COVID-19. The foundation will donate matching funds for the first $5,000 raised from online contributions this sumer. All funds raised will be applied toward the COVID-related needs of local nonprofits. Most of us know about the community’s downtown district and maybe even a little bit about Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, inc., the local not-for-profit working to promote, support and grow the area. But do you really know about the hundreds and hundreds of people, who during the past 30 years have led the grass roots effort to form this organization and turn this small footprint into vital piece of our community’s landscape? DLSMS events coordinator Julie Cook sat down with host Nick Parker to talk about the organization, the people who make it work and how easy it is for others to donate their time, ideas and even money to the cause.
