Hello again fellow Racing Ears, I took a courage pill and spent 110 quidd for a ticket to the 2023 Velocity Invitational. Mr Producer and I had a ball seeing and hearing very famous and historic racing cars that were all staged in the one and only paddock area that is at Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point. As I described in this podcast episode, there was a flavor for every possible historic sports car racing enthusiast's appetite. 50's GT racers, Historic F1 racers, Really Historic / Modern F1 racers, Historic Group C and GTP racers, WRC Rally racers, Can Am Racers, Trans Am Racers, Historic Indy Car racers, IMSA GTX GTO GTU racers, ALMS / 24 Hours of Le Mans racers, and an Enduro that went from day into night both Saturday and Sunday that featured Mini's and Mustangs. I wish I could've seen the sprint car racing that was happening at the south turn 11 hairpin in the evening. I wasn't able to chat with as many people as I would've liked but I still chatted with a few folks and was also able to capture on track action from Turn 2 at Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point. I also currently have a few videos up at The Racing Ear on YouTube with a few more on the way up there. Thank you for listening to The Racing Ear PodcastGOD BLESS YOU!! This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Justin Thatil and Mike Dionne to discuss the topic of Agile assessments. Let's assume it: No one likes to be assessed since it tends to feel deeply uncomfortable. In this episode, these three colleagues discuss the meaning of an assessment, its purpose (that changes according to different environments), and how to conduct assessments following the Agile methodology. Key Takeaways First: What are you trying to assess? Remember that data can be changed and looked at in many different ways (what could be a problem). The Assessments at the Scrum Master level are meant to evaluate the current state of a Team. Start with a series of questions for a health check: Do you feel you are listened to by a Team? Do you feel you have a voice? Do you feel the Team acknowledges you? Do you feel safe in that environment? If the answer is “Yes” to all four questions on a 1-5 scale, give it a 5. If the answer is affirmative to only a couple of the questions, give it a 3 or 4; if the answer is ‘Yes” to only one, put a 0 or 1. This process must be repeated, and you will realize that people answer with varying honesty over time. Over the journey, you will notice how the Team dynamics start to pick up. As a result of the assessment, the Scrum Master becomes better informed in his or her role. How is the Team performing? Velocity isn't everything! Other parts of the overall assessment can also give a good perspective regarding a Team's performance. Scrum enables problems to surface faster so that they can be addressed quicker. Velocity is only suitable for predicting how long it can take to finish a group of backlog items. Start with the Team's identity and move to the things that improve the Team's performance to reach the goal you had set. After that, find what you want to improve next. Repeat this process once a quarter. We can control the process, not necessarily the outcome. The whole organization needs to pull in the same direction. The Team needs to be willing to participate in the assessment. If the Team feels the measurement is unnecessary or useless, the assessment won't be used as a tool for improvement, and this metric won't have the value that it was expected to have. Assessments also exist for organizations. How long does it take to develop an idea? Does the organization have the ability to improve? Yes, it's the "S-word." Shoegaze...of all the media fabricated sub-genres that we talk about on O3L, this is one of the most polarizing. The term was coined with some derision about the crop of artists that came up in the late '80s/early '90s who spent much of their stage time looking down at their effects pedals. Even many of the bands who are most closely associated with the term rebuke the label. On the other hand, the word conjures up a glorious, beloved sound that continues to resonate with musicians and fans to this day: walls of woozy, beautifully sculpted guitar noise, drowned out but ethereal vocals, dreamy, insistent beats, all bathed in swathes of reverb and echo. The Extended Play (EP) was a format that was well suited for this music, so that's our focus on this episode. While we may associate the heyday of shoegaze with the amazing groups that burst onto the UK scene, its influence spread across the pond. Case in point is our Third Lad this week, guitarist Archie Moore, who spent the first part of the '90s simultaneously in THREE seminal Washington, D.C. area bands who took cues from fizzy UK indie - Black Tambourine, Lilys, and Velocity Girl. If that wasn't enough, Archie and his friends also co-founded one of the legendary American indie labels, Slumberland Records. Velocity Girl was the stuff that '90s indie pop dreams are made of: Named after one of the coolest songs, fronted by the impossibly cool Sarah Shannon, recording for one of the coolest labels (Sub Pop), staples of alternative radio and MTV's 120 Minutes with hits like "My Forgotten Favorite" (also prominently featured on the Clueless soundtrack), "Crazy Town," "Sorry Again," and "I Can't Stop Smiling." We caught up with Archie the day after Velocity Girl's first gig in 21 years at the anniversary bash for legendary D.C. club The Black Cat. They also will be playing the Bowery Ballroom in New York on September 30th before returning to The Black Cat on December 1st. Catch them if you can! Chris Walker hosts weekly Private Coaching Events for Vault Subscribers, which opens with covering important and timely industry observations. First, he explains that pipeline velocity is a key metric that combines four growth levers: the number of qualified opportunities generated, win rate, average deal size, and sales cycle length. Chris emphasizes that companies should not solely focus on generating more pipeline, but rather optimize the existing pipeline to drive accelerated growth. Chris suggests several ways to analyze pipeline velocity. At a top-level, companies can look at the overall business performance and trends. They can also break down pipeline sources and compare the sales velocity of each source to identify the most effective ways to capture and convert demand into revenue. By analyzing the underlying drivers of pipeline velocity, companies can identify root causes and develop strategies to improve performance. Chris also shares his thoughts on the common debate of whether declining win rates or pipeline quality is the root cause of growth issues. He believes that in most cases, it is a marketing issue related to pipeline quality rather than a sales team's performance. However, he acknowledges that external factors such as market conditions and competition can also impact growth. Lastly, Chris provides insights on how marketers should report their progress on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. He suggests focusing on high ROI activities and avoiding frequent strategy changes based on weekly data. Monthly reporting should focus on progress towards quarterly goals, while quarterly reporting should involve a holistic analysis of the entire revenue team's performance. Chris recommends hiring an external consultant for objective analysis and conducting primary customer research to inform decision-making. Thanks to our friends at Hatch for producing this episode. In strength training, you're training skills. You're entering into a practice with asymmetries, past injuries, weak points and more. Whether you were an athlete or have never played a sport in your life, very people have perfectly balanced muscular and joint function. To be clear, that is not the end goal of training. And you're not failing if your body is not yet in perfect balance. BUT - a massive use and benefit of strength training can be to improve weaknesses. And that, as a byproduct, also improves our strengths. Aka why strength training is the GOAT in my opinion for longevity in a physically functional life. So how do you go about improving movement patterns and gaining strength in areas we have weakness? Just keep going? Add more weight? More reps? That's what we answer today. I share my process below - what to focus on if you're a trainee or a trainer. Find the leaks Both of these are most easily identified through simply videoing lifts. And typically they'll become more prominent as load increases. We lose efficiency and it shows through the movement, in one way or another. Energy leaks where you break position This happens when you see an area of the body "give" during a movement. Think knees caving in (valgus) coming out of the hole in the squat. Or elbows flaring out during bench press. There is a weak part of the mechanics within the movement. The point here is to identify the weak point - where is it happening? And what is actually happening during the energy leak? Sticking points where your velocity slows You'll be able to see this in video. Velocity slowing as volume increases is normal. That should happen through the WHOLE concentric phase. A sticking point typically manifests when the load increases and velocity slows through a specific portion of the concentric phase - think half way up from the squat, or at the start of a pull up for many people. This differs from an energy leak as form doesn't break. The movement simply SLOWS and then picks back up. Break the skill down into parts & train the parts Once you've identified the actual weakness, you'll need to TRAIN in that specific position and portion of the movement where either the energy leak or the sticking point happens. We can gain strength in 15 degrees in either direction of an isometric contraction at a given joint angle. Ie: You have a sticking point half way up in the pull up. So, you add in isometric holds at or just before that 90 degree position. And then reap the gains in 15 degrees above and below that point. In general you're going to ADD capacity before load. That comes through adding time under tension holding the proper position (energy leak) and then "powering out" of said position if working past a sticking point. Train the actual skill under less load, with more control The goal here being to NOT break position or to keep speed consistent depending on what form of weakness you're training. Train weak points often Like any other area of the body, if you want to make gains, we need to CHALLENGE the movement and the tension placed on said movement from a muscular standpoint. I say these drills or adaptions (adding 1 and 1/4 squats, or isometric holds in pull ups) take the place of your normal prescription. You can then add in extra work (say clamshells or abduction work for knee valgus) in the warm up or as burn out after the lift. But train these OFTEN and be consistent. It will take WORK to build up weaknesses. ;) Side to side discrepancies If you're addressing side to side strength imbalances (ie your right shoulder is stronger in single arm vertical pressing or your left leg fatigues slower in step ups), then follow these progressions: Start on weak side Match strong to weak side load and reps Add extra set to weak side (AMRAP) Retest strength or capacity on each limb (choose weight to perform right and left. Rest between sides.
