Today With Deb Barrett: Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit. Appropriate fabric selection is vital when designing custom window treatments, so understanding textiles isn't just advantageous—it's essential. With an extensive knowledge of textiles and techniques, industry icon Deb Barrett breaks down how to elevate your level of service by educating yourself on textiles so that you can select the most suitable materials and proper installation on every project. Deb is a consultant, speaker, author, and founder of the couture soft furnishings firm Window Dressings. She is here to help us understand why textiles matter. Pick It Apart [5:14] Deb notes that it is the window covering professional's duty to educate their clients on appropriate fabric selections, discussing how having standards in place make it easier to communicate with clients, contractors, and your workroom.  [14:50] Deb explains how keeping master cuts on hand can improve your presentation and help clients understand how certain fabrics will look and act in their homes. [17:24] Deb breaks down how she organizes her sample bags. [27:27] LuAnn and Deb discuss why photos clients see in magazines or online are not always representative of what they are able to offer. [35:10] Deb talks about how specializing in textiles can set you apart and add to your revenue. LuAnn Nigara and Deb Barrett's Ah-Ha Moments “As a window covering professional, it's your responsibility to select the appropriate fabric for the intended application.” - Deb Barrett “The client doesn't know what the client doesn't know.” - Deb Barrett “We have to know what the standards—and what the above standards are. Because we bring them to the conversation.” - LuAnn Nigara “[It's important to know] what's happening in weaves and fabrication and fiber contents out in the marketplace, because that's what's going to be sampled in your books in six months or eight months.” - Deb Barrett More About Deb Barrett: Deb Barrett is a prolific and highly regarded industry presence for more than 30 years. Today I talk to JT Thiessen with Budget Blinds. A very well established brand that is absolutely crushing it with happy successful franchisees   JT said something that stopped me in my tracks: "The 10th franchisee is different than the 210th franchisee"   It's true!   ✔️ Their mindset is different ✔️ Their experience is different ✔️ They're a different buyer   It's important to understand this! When you're buying a franchise, you're obviously going to have a different experience depending on what kind of brand you buy, but you're also going to have a different experience whether you buy an emerging brand or an established brand.   As a brand grows, they inevitably start to delegate parts of the business so they can scale. For this reason, you may have a different experience than a franchisee who purchased the same brand with it was emerging.   You may:   -have less direct access to the founder -have an onboarding process that looks different than what early franchisees experienced -have access to vendors right away that early franchisees didn't have until later -and more!   These are things to keep in mind when you're validating with Franchisees.   Let's dive in!   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Looking to dive deeper into the world of franchising? In 1992, five young friends and entrepreneurs with a passion for building a unique niche in the home furnishings industry founded Budget Blinds. Brent Hallock, his twin brother Chad, Tony Forbes, Todd Jackson, and David Lewis banded together to dedicate themselves to the lifestyle they'd dreamed of. In the early years, they ran Budget Blinds out of a small apartment. By combining their industry experience and people skills, they pounded the pavement the old-fashioned way to grow the company into what it is today—America's #1 window coverings franchise with over 1,000 consultants throughout the U.S. and Canada. When they finally decided to sell the company, it sold for $500 million. With extensive knowledge and experience in the home improvement industry, each of the founders brought their individual strengths to the table and remained involved in the day-to-day operations. Brent dives into the story of the company's inception, the equal split attitude all the co-founders adopted, how the day to day work was handled, and so much more. He has remained humble, kind, and caring throughout this journey; money has not changed him. His gratitude is apparent, and his smiley demeanor is contagious, and he is one heck of a success story.  Click here to watch the episode of Undercover Boss which features Budget Blinds, here is a Forbes article which highlights Brent and his friends who founded the company, and most fun of all, he has an IMDb page.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
