How is urban art developed in cooperation with planners, developers, and architects? Public art is designed to be viewed and enjoyed from many angles. Riccardo embraces this 360-degree perspective in this episode by examining a component of major programmes that is not often explored: the development of the impressive art installations on display in many public buildings. He speaks with Corail Bourrelier Fabiani, a former host of the podcast and the passionate programme manager behind London's Shard and Paddington Square sculptures.Corail outlines the intricate relationship between public art and major urban developments in the city, from why it's so important to inspire ongoing wonder in our concrete jungles to the challenges of getting involved late in the development process. Her experiences highlight the importance of stakeholder collaboration and the many moving parts that must be navigated to create something beautiful, lasting, and welcoming for tourists and residents alike—something that helps define the fabric of the city around us.Takeaways:The humanizing impact of interacting with public art.The complex process of stakeholder management and artistic team selection. The benefits of enthusiastic architect and engineer buy-in on an art installation. The technical, structural, and visual challenges inherent in making public art decisions at the end of development.Quote: “There are a lot of sculptures around us that we, after a while, we don't even see. And I would say, like, it's true. It's true with a lot of the urban fabric that when you get used to something, you just stop like looking at it. If you take the tube in Paris, for example, like the very old entrances to the tube with like the lights and the way they're shaped, etc. This kind of Art Deco, like, beautiful entrance. Most people don't even see them anymore, you know. Or if you walk along alongside the Thames and you go closer to the Tate, you would see these lampposts that have big fish at the bottom of them that are, you know, around the lamppost. And a lot of people, because we're so. There are so many images, etc, or we're too much into our own world, like thinking about our issues, our, like our next meeting, et cetera, we just walk past them without even noticing what's around us. And I think art, the magic of art is that sometimes it grabs your attention, you don't know why, and it makes you stop for a second and realize that your surroundings, or be completely amazed that you notice that element.” - Corail Bourrelier FabianiThe conversation doesn't stop here—connect and converse with our community via LinkedIn:Follow Navigating Major ProgrammesFollow Riccardo CosentinoRead Riccardo's latest at www.riccardocosentino.comFollow Corail Bourrelier Fabiani Music: "A New Tomorrow" by Chordial Music. Over the past decade, public art projects have brightened up big cities and small towns alike. Send us a textIn this episode of Art and Processes, host Emeka Okereke sits down with renowned Cuban contemporary artist Alexandre Arrechea. Born in Trinidad de Cuba—a UNESCO World Heritage Site steeped in colonial history—Arrechea's work explores themes of power, surveillance, architecture, and public engagement. From his early days painting trucks for his uncle to co-founding the influential collective Los Carpinteros, and later forging a distinguished solo career, Arrechea's journey is a testament to the transformative power of art.The conversation spans his upbringing in Cuba, the robust educational system that shaped his worldview, and how his multidisciplinary practice—encompassing sculpture, installation, video, painting, and performance—continually challenges conventional notions of form and function. Arrechea also shares insights into collaborations with institutions such as the Birmingham Royal Ballet, and discusses monumental public works like No Limits on Park Avenue, New York, and the Hexagon Garden created for Balmain. He further reflects on earlier works such as White Corner (2006) and The Garden of Mistrust (2006), unpacking how they exemplify his approach to context-specific art-making.Employing the emotive lure of anecdotes, Arrechea takes us down memory lane, weaving an intertwining arc of a life of creative explorations that began as early as the age of 11 and continues to this day—a life that has come to mean, for him, a learning curve that never stops, driven by an ever-burning urge to expand language and correlate contexts across places and people. In one of his most striking interventions, he asked: “How can we turn straight lines into curved lines?” This question signals the subtle yet consistent quality of malleability that undergirds much of his artistic proposals. It is his way of bringing sensitivity, play, and humanness into the often heavy-handed world of sharp edges, fixed forms, and solid surfaces—hallmarks of structural integrity. Thus, listeners are invited into the nuanced thinking behind his practice—how it bridges personal and collective narratives, navigates sociopolitical tension, and partakes in the synthesis of the “I” and the “we,” the subjective and the collective—while positioning art as a tool for healing, dialogue, connection, and meaning-making. Key Topics Discussed:Early Influences: Growing up in Trinidad de Cuba, the impact of colonial architecture, and the familial environment that nurtured his artistic curiosity.Artistic Education: The rigorous Cuban art school system, mentorship under René Francisco, and the formative years of his collective, Los Carpinteros.Public Art & Architecture: The philosophies underpinning works like No Limits (Park Avenue) and Orange Functional (a basketball hoop tree), which invite public interaction and subvert structural hegemony.Collaborations: Designing sets for Black Sabbath: The Ballet and fusing rock culture with classical dance.Decolonizing Practice: How Arrechea's work reconciles contradiction, integrates the “I” and the “we,” and fosters cross-cultural dialogue.Art as Healing: The role of art in restorinSupport the showHi, amazing listeners! How can being kind to ourselves help ourselves others and the planet, in very practical as well as energetic ways. If you're interested in understanding how we can regenerate our landscape listen to my guest Marian Boswall, a Landscape architect, horticulturalist, agroecology coach, land energy healer and author of The Kindest Garden which is about creating beautiful places where whole ecosystems can thrive; it's about moving beyond an extractive system by putting back, nurturing ourselves and regenerating our surroundings. For the past several weeks a 45-foot tall wire sculpture of a nude woman has loomed over San Francisco's Embarcadero Plaza. “R-Evolution,” which first appeared at Burning Man in 2015, has gotten a very mixed reception, sparking controversy in the city over who public art is for and who gets a say. We'll talk about how public art gets selected, how it illuminates the different relationships people have with shared urban spaces, and why private funding is complicating it all. World-renowned artist Leo Villareal, creator of San Francisco's famous Bay Lights, has designed a mesmerizing installation featuring over 3,000 feet of programmable LED lights woven throughout the museum's glass exterior. Unlike typical light displays, Evanescent Field creates sequences that never repeat, responding specifically to the Mississippi River, the community, and the building itself."We wanted to give something back to the community that's supported us for 100 years," explains Mohr. The installation fulfills architect David Chipperfield's original vision for the building as a beacon of creativity and accessibility. Johnson describes how Villareal transforms LEDs from commercial tools into what he calls a "digital campfire" – a gathering place where art transcends traditional boundaries. Visible to everyone passing by, whether commuting to work or traveling through the region, Evanescent Field removes barriers to experiencing art.The public unveiling happens May 17th at "Glow Up" – a community celebration featuring live music, family activities and food trucks, culminating when Villareal himself activates the installation as darkness falls. Even after the celebration ends, the lights will continue illuminating the Quad Cities nightly, becoming a postcard-worthy image representing the region's creative spirit.Discover the technical marvels, artistic vision, and hopeful future this landmark installation represents. As the Figge looks toward its next hundred years, Evanescent Field symbolizes its commitment to weaving art more deeply into the fabric of the community – creating a museum that truly belongs to everyone. Don't miss your chance to witness this stunning merger of architecture, technology and artistic expression that will forever change how we see the Quad Cities after dark.QC, That's Where is a podcast powered by Visit Quad Cities. Ceri interviews Sherry Dobbin, a cultural strategist whose work spans continents and iconic spaces. From starting in theatre to transforming Times Square, Sherry shares how she crafts meaningful cultural experiences that change how we engage with public spaces. She reveals the secrets behind successful public art, innovative funding models and her approach to helping people engage and not feel intimidated by public art. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sherry's journey began in theatre, where she learned to embody multiple perspectives through mask work, establishing her passion for crafting environments where people can explore and connect. Successful public art needs three levels of engagement: aesthetic appeal that draws in the casual observer, deeper resonance for those knowledgeable about art and dialogue with important contemporary issues. Creating clear frames or visual cues in public spaces helps people understand how to engage with art, allowing them to feel confident rather than confused or intimidated. Sherry advocates for meeting people where they are by providing simple instructions about what to do rather than what not to do, giving audiences the confidence to engage with even the most challenging art. Developing cultural spaces in commercial developments can work when both parties understand value beyond direct financial transactions, arts organisations bring people, energy and identity to developments. Cultural organisations should rethink funding models by considering their total operational needs rather than focusing on rigid categories, opening up to partnerships where both parties maintain integrity while addressing shared interests. When developing cultural spaces, look to the youngest creators to understand future trends, focus on how artists create rather than what they create to anticipate evolving needs. Embracing ‘healthy naivete’ allows for innovation, asking questions and trying approaches that go against expectations can lead to breakthroughs when done with respect and genuine curiosity. BEST MOMENTS "That early understanding of occupying different spaces and identities has shaped her lifelong passion for crafting environments where people can explore, question and connect." "I was much better at taking really great directors and artists and helping them to push themselves, to think further, or how to support the work, or how to come up with solutions for them." "Being able to find alternative realities is how we can help to see solutions to problems." "It's this delicate balance between something being finite enough and clear enough you can focus on it, but it still allows this infinite number of ways in which it can be interpreted." "A lot of it is about giving instructions about what you want people to do. Don't put up don'ts. Everything can turn into an invitation." "Don't assume old sponsorship models anymore, people are really looking towards this matchmaking idea." "Cultural organisations are not the only entities that get free rent in commercial properties. So stop apologising for it and start understanding how you bring something to them." 288. How Art Creates Community and Connection with Jennifer Brener Seay In this episode of Creative Chats, Mike Brennan speaks with Jennifer Seay, an art consultant who shares her journey into the art world, the importance of building relationships within the art community, and the impact of art on public spaces. They discuss the criteria for working with artists, understanding client needs, and the significance of marketing and promoting art. Jennifer also shares success stories from her work and offers valuable advice for aspiring artists looking to make their mark in the industry. 3 Key Takeaways:
Ceri speaks with Chantelle Purcell, a curator, producer, and visual artist who co-founded Hive Curates and Other Landz. Chantelle shares her experiences, from grassroots creative spaces to large public art projects, discussing how she manages the balance between community engagement, inclusive spaces and the art. With a passion for creating inclusive spaces and championing culturally diverse artists, Chantelle discusses her approach to curating with care at its centre. Ceri and Chantelle also discuss securing funding, building meaningful collaborations and creating a lasting legacy in public spaces. KEY TAKEAWAYS Creating inclusive environments in the arts means challenging traditional models, through initiatives like Other Landz and Hive Curates, Chantelle builds platforms that specifically support culturally diverse artists and those who haven't had opportunities to create work in public spaces. The power of 'meanwhile spaces' lies in their flexibility and community impact, Chantelle's BroadWorks project transformed a disused building in Liverpool Street into a vibrant cultural hub, supporting over 300 creatives and attracting more than 10,000 visitors in 18 months. The etymology of curate is rooted in care, which should extend to artist development, community engagement and creating accessible spaces that honour local contexts and heritage. Chantelle's work with Enfield Winter Lights and Light Up Kilburn shows how Light festivals can create community engagement. These types of events can change perceptions of public spaces and create platforms for showcasing underrepresented artists. Building relationships with local authorities and developers requires understanding their priorities. You should research cultural policies, understand community demographics and begin engagement 6-9 months before events to build meaningful connections. The role of curator includes both curation and production. Beyond selecting artworks, curators must understand fabrication, planning permissions, community engagement and the entire ecosystem of networks that support public art projects. Chantelle shares that project management fees typically run about 20-25% of total budgets, with artist fees guided by industry standards, ensuring resources flow back into local communities. Chantelle began with a passion project that evolved into a sustainable business, demonstrating how creatives can test concepts, iterate, and develop their unique approach over time and create their own opportunities. BEST MOMENTS "I was always passionate about creativity from a really early age. I was lucky that I had the support of my mum, I was raised by a single parent, but she always encouraged fine art and creativity." "Often we don't think of curation as being about care, if you think about the etymology of the words and the idea of care, I think we often forget this." "For me, curation has evolved. It's changed. When I was working in a commercial context, it was more about curating a body of works for an exhibition. Now it's really about creating legacy and working with local communities." "We realised that the physical interaction or encounter could happen in the public realm and so that's when we started to pivot." "My idea of curation is challenged by the context in which I'm working in." "It's being able to work with an artist, to give them all of the funding, perhaps the tools that they need to fabricate something that they have never fabricated before, to be part of that process EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.chantellempurcell.com/about PODCAST HOST BIO With over 30 years in the art world, Ceri has worked closely with leading artists and arts professionals, managed public and private galleries and charities, and curated more than 250 exhibitions and events. I have the good fortune of living in a place that values public art -- art that anyone can see at any time of night or day-- and that, with its very presence, invites just a little curiosity in a way that you might imagine would appeal to me. So I was delighted when Tomora Wright Swann, Public Art Projects Manager of Arlington County (Va.) reached out -- and propelled me to connect with contributing artist Aurora Robson. When I visit other cities, one of the things I look for is iconic walking tours – the cisterns of Istanbul, the passages couverts of Paris, the murals of Philadelphia, New Orleans' Garden District. What a pleasure to talk with two people behind Arlington County's own art walking tours! The bipartisan Arts and Culture Caucus in the Oregon legislatures has a slate of bills it’s pushing for this session. One proposal would merge two major arts funding organizations: The Oregon Arts Commission and the Oregon Cultural Trust. Democratic Representative Rob Nosse co-chairs the caucus, created in 2023. He joins us to share the progress the caucus has made since it began and what he sees as the biggest challenges and opportunities for the arts in Oregon in the current political moment.

20 years ago, the late Christo and Jeanne-Claude transformed Central Park with The Gates, a temporary public art installation featuring 7,503 saffron-colored gates adorned with free-flowing fabric. After being elected as Mayor of New York City, Mike Bloomberg worked with the artists to bring their vision to life. The results? Over its 16 days on display, the public art piece drew more than four million visitors to Central Park in the middle of winter and brought an estimated $254 million in economic activity to the city.Christo and Jeanne-Claude were known for their site-specific, large-scale public artworks, which often reimagined landmarks or landscapes into surreal spaces with objects, fabrics, textures, and colors. From surrounding 11 islands in Miami's Biscayne Bay with bright pink fabric, to wrapping Paris's Pont Neuf bridge with silky, golden fabric, the pair created bold and brilliant outdoor projects that spanned the globe and garnered international acclaim for their expansiveness and originality. The point of their installations? It was simple; no deeper meaning was contained within the works, but they provided visitors with joy, beauty, and new perspectives on familiar spaces. For a limited time, the public can experience a portion of The Gates through an augmented reality experience in Central Park powered by the Bloomberg Connects app and learn more about Christo and Jeanne-Claude's NYC projects at Christo and Jeanne-Claude: The Gates and Unrealized Projects for New York City, the latest exhibition at The Shed.On this episode of Follow the Data, Megan Sheekey sits down with Patti Harris, CEO of Bloomberg Philanthropies, and Vladimir Yavachev, Director of Projects at the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Foundation, to dive deeper into the 20th anniversary of The Gates, the prolific life and works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and the critical role public art plays in cities around the world.
