Liverpool have been on the wrong side of two big VAR decisions this week. A soft penalty was given for Napoli in Tuesday's Champions League opener when Andy Robertson was judged to have fouled Jose Callejon, despite replays appearing to show minimal contact, while Joel Matip can feel unlucky not to have been awarded a spot-kick against Newcastle United at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday when he was grappled to the floor during a corner. Liverpool.com's Joel Rabinowitz and Dan Austin look at back those decisions and VAR in a wider context to discuss the pros and cons, whether it's working, and how it could be done differently. This week we discuss the 4th La Liga game of the season against Valencia. The continued use of young players by Valverde is paying off, as 16 year old Ansu Fati had a goal and assist in the first 10 minues! De Jong also joined with his first official barca goal, with Pique and Suarez (twice) adding in for the 5-2 victory. Our defense still looks a bit shaky, but the signs are positive heading into Tuesday's Champions League game against Dortmund. Hopefully Messi will be back!
With Joe Rimmer on a day off and our Liverpool FC correspondent James Pearce on a scouting mission in Germany, the pack has been reshuffled for the latest Blood Red podcast with Connor Dunn and Theo Squires joining host Ian Doyle and Paul Gorst. The Reds are without a match this weekend, so the focus is firmly on Tuesday's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich at Anfield.Jurgen Klopp is set to be down to one fit and available centre-back for the last-16 first-leg showdown and Gorsty wonders whether the Liverpool manager was wrong to let a certain defender - who's not Nathaniel Clyne - leave. The panel are fairly sure who will start in the middle of the backline versus Munich but are split over the ability of one of the players in question. Taking that into account, then, which of Klopp's squad has to step up the most?Talk then turns to the Reds' Marbella training camp, the return of two attackers from long-term injury, and why the time in Spain could be crucial in getting a good result on Tuesday. The massive Premier League trip to Old Trafford follows the Bayern encounter. On paper, it looks one of Liverpool's toughest assignments left. But has Manchester United's chastening Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain altered perceptions? And while United used to be the club that most rival fans did not want to see win the league, has that changed to Liverpool? And if so, why?Our second Blood Red Live event and two red-hot young strikers are then debated before the podcast finishes with the panel failing to hide their disinterest in the FA Cup. Rob Walker (@rwalk03) is a staff writer for Into the Calderón and the guest on this edition of Colchonero Chat. He returns to the program to discuss and debate another deflating result from Atlético Madrid’s early season schedule: their 1-1 draw at home to Eibar on Saturday afternoon. The result was undesirable, but the performance was admirable. Rob and Into the Calderón site manager Jeremy Beren (@JBBeren) work their way through an entertaining 90 minutes, which saw Rodri stand out in midfield, in-form Marko Dmitrovic make huge saves for Eibar, signs of life from Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann, another Diego Godín mistake and a memorable debut for teenage striker Borja Garcés. The podders then turn to Tuesday's Champions League group stage opener against AS Monaco. The Ligue 1 side have more new faces, but will old friend Radamel Falcao take part in the fixture at Stade Louis II? Colchonero Chat is off and running again, as Jeremy and Martin get together to discuss Atletico Madrid's 4-2 win vs. Malaga and Tuesday's Champions League fixture vs. Rostov. A recounting of the sensational goals from Atletico-Malaga gets us going, and we debate just how good the Yannick Carrasco-Kevin Gameiro-Antoine Griezmann trio is (after all, only Lionel Messi-Luis Suarez-Neymar have been responsible for more goals in LaLiga this season). Also, Angel Correa is a different player off the bench than as a starter; we talk about why that could be. After that, we preview Atletico's game at the Vicente Calderon against Rostov, where a win would put Atleti through to the Round of 16. We ponder if Diego Simeone has a rotation scheme plotted with Gameiro set to miss the game and offer scoreline predictions. Follow the podders @JBBeren and @_MC1905_, and as ever, enjoy
