The 36-hour delay before any real search began. The sidescan sonar contract that was lined up and then cancelled by Durham Police without explanation. The "unsinkable" boat that was never found. L'opération AJAX désigne un coup d'État clandestin organisé en 1953 contre le gouvernement iranien de Mohammad Mossadegh, avec l'appui conjoint de la Central Intelligence Agency américaine et du MI6 britannique. Elle est aujourd'hui considérée comme l'une des premières grandes interventions secrètes de la Guerre froide visant directement à protéger des intérêts énergétiques occidentaux.Au début des années 1950, l'Iran traverse une période de profonde effervescence politique. Mossadegh, élu démocratiquement Premier ministre, incarne un nationalisme modernisateur. En 1951, il fait adopter une décision historique : la nationalisation de l'industrie pétrolière iranienne, jusque-là dominée par une compagnie britannique. Pour une grande partie de la population iranienne, cette mesure représente un acte de souveraineté et de justice économique. Pour Londres, en revanche, c'est un choc majeur, synonyme de pertes financières colossales et de remise en cause d'un pilier de son influence au Moyen-Orient.Incapable d'obtenir l'annulation de la nationalisation par la voie diplomatique, le Royaume-Uni se tourne vers Washington. Dans le contexte de la Guerre froide, les États-Unis redoutent que l'instabilité iranienne ne favorise une montée en puissance des communistes et, à terme, un basculement du pays dans l'orbite soviétique. Cette crainte, mêlée aux enjeux pétroliers, ouvre la voie à une action secrète.L'opération AJAX repose sur une stratégie de déstabilisation. Les services secrets financent des campagnes de propagande contre Mossadegh, encouragent des manifestations, soudoyent des responsables politiques, des journalistes et des officiers, et alimentent un climat de chaos. L'objectif est de donner l'impression d'un pays au bord de l'effondrement, afin de justifier l'éviction du Premier ministre.Après plusieurs tentatives hésitantes, le coup d'État finit par aboutir en août 1953. Mossadegh est arrêté, puis condamné à une peine de prison avant d'être placé en résidence surveillée jusqu'à sa mort. Le pouvoir est consolidé entre les mains du Chah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, qui devient un allié central des États-Unis dans la région.Dans la foulée, un nouveau consortium pétrolier est mis en place, garantissant aux compagnies occidentales un large accès au pétrole iranien. Officiellement, l'Iran conserve une part de contrôle, mais l'équilibre des forces reste largement favorable aux puissances étrangères.À court terme, l'opération AJAX est perçue à Washington et Londres comme un succès stratégique. À long terme, elle laisse une trace profonde dans la mémoire collective iranienne. Beaucoup y voient l'exemple fondateur d'une ingérence occidentale ayant brisé une expérience démocratique.
